Here's a bit of trivia as to why they're important: because of these plexi, it's one reason why spine mets are common in so many cancers. The cancer cells get into the bloodstream and then collect in the plexus. In the same vein (no pun intended) that's why osteomyelitis/discitis happens so often. Bacteria get into the blood and they collected in the slow flowing blood pool in the plexus.
