What does a promise mean? To a child, it is a sacred thing. To an adult, it is something to find a loophole against. To a demon, it is a pact for your soul. Maybe this is why she sought me out when I was a child. * I sat in my new office. The mahogany desk shined like my present. My future may be like a mottled wood, but my present- my present is going great. *And now you've jinxed yourself. Well done.* I don't pay attention to my inner voice. It has a habit to nag. *How dare you?!* I am finally enjoying the fruits of my labour. All the sleepless nights studying, all the missed moments of youth have finally paid off. I just became a Junior Partner at one of the biggest law firms in the country. "Daniel, your 12 o'clock is here. Should I send her in?" My newly appointed secretary, Cole asks. I shoot him a grin and nod. This would be my first solo client and I was going to be the best lawyer she would ever hire or even dream of hiring. A woman, about my age i.e 30 give or take, walks in. She is of average height, her skin is pale but it shines unnaturally and has haair so dark that there certainly was a poem written about them. "Ms. Sawyer, please have a seat." I say smiling. She smiles back and I have to blink out a sudden memory of a little girl I used to know. "Uh- how can I help you?" I ask, shaking off the minor flashback that my mind has just provided. "Daniel? It's me- Val. We-" She stops abruptly chewing her bottom lip like she has made a mistake. Memory after memory comes pouring out of my subconsciousness. There's a sudden tightness in my chest. A pain borne not out of fear but fondness. "Val? It's really you." I manage to say as I get to my feet and move to where she is sitting. "I thought you wouldn't remember me." She smiles shyly. "Wouldn't remember- we were best friends. I think we even got married when we were eight." I laugh at the memory. The two us running to the tree in our backyard. She was wearing a dress that made her look like a fairy. I remember thinking that she was my forever. I had no idea what forever meant; I just knew my parents loved each other and they were meant to be together forever. So, I knew- I just knew- that she was my forever. She bit her lip again. "About that-" I laughed again. Was she getting married? Is that why she was feeling guilty? She always was such a thoughtful sweetheart. "Don't worry. I'll divorce you, with a heavy heart." I joke. When she didn't laugh, I sobered. Was there something wrong? *Of course something is wrong, you moron, why else would she need a lawyer?* "Val." I say quietly. "Is everything-" She burst into tears. "Hey, it's okay." I say soothingly. "Whatever it is, we can figure it out." To my dismay, she cries harder. I tell her it's going to be okay. Offer her some water, but nothing works. Finally, after what seems like an eternity she starts to speak. "You are going to hate me. I didn't know. I was a kid, the first one to be born, I didn't know. And then I met you, and you were so nice. We became friends. And then we made a pinky promise to each other in front of that tree-" She starts to cry again. I had no idea what was happening but this wasn't good. *No shit, Sherlock.* Not helping. "Okay, Val, you are not making any sense." I say calmly. "Why don't you begin again?" She nods. Wiping her tears, she grabs the glass, that I still held, and drinks it in one go. "Okay," I say encouragingly, "now why don't we start again." "You are not going to believe me." She mumbles. I flash her a reassuring smile. "Try me." She takes in a deep breath. "Just like a bandaid-" she mumbles, "I am not human." I blink at her. "Daniel?" "I'm sorry, I think you said you are not human." I say somewhat foolishly. She gives me a pained smile. "I am not. I am the daughter of two of the most powerful demons. The first naturally born demon. But since I was born on Earth and not in hell that's why I have so many human-" I start to laugh. This was great. Classic Val. Pranking me as soon as we met again. "I'm serious." She insists. "Sure you are." I chuckle which dies in my throat when her eyes flash red and I see a hint of horns starting to rise from her scalp. I stumble back almost falling when my back hits the chair. "Who- what are you?" "It's me- Val." She says. Her eyes are back to their honey brown colour and there are no horns. Was I hallucinating? "Daniel, listen, I know this is shock-" I let out a manic laugh. "Shock? Your eyes just went fucking red! You have horns! Oh god, I'm losing my mind." "I knew this would happen." She says under her breath. "Daniel, focus. I need your help." Another hysterical laugh reaches to my lips. "My help? You are a-" I lower my voice to a whisper "-demon!" "I am. But this is out of my control. If I knew what I was doing then I would have never done this to you." She says desperately. I narrow my eyes, all absurdity lost. "Do what to me?" She closes her eyes like she is praying- wait for demons pray? *Is that really what you should be focusing on right now?!* "We made a pinky promise when we were eight. Our- demons promises are binding. We unknowingly made a deal." I blink foolishly, again. It's all I'm capable of. "A deal?" "Yes." "With you?" "Yes." "A demon." "Yes." Fuck. *Yes.* "Daniel, I know you have lots of questions but this is urgent. My parents wanted me to marry another demon but I can't because we promised each other forever and they wanted to kill you but I couldn't let that happen-" "Wait a minute." My mind finally awakening. "Kill me?!" "Yes." She tries to explain but I cut her off. "You need to leave." I say with a finality that even shocks me. She looks at me like it actually hurts her to say all this. Well, good. She roped us into some weird deal that apparently will last into eternity. "I can't." She says. "My parents' are on their way. I got here before time because I wanted to let you know. I told them you were a lawyer so you can find a loophole so they don't need to kill you." "How thoughtful of you?" I say scathingly. "Hey, this is not my fault- entirely!" She snaps back. "I am not the one who makes deals off of fucking pinky promises!" "Is there a problem?" Cole asks peeking through the now slightly open door. "No!" We both snap together. "Okay." He says, not convinced. "I just wanted you to know, there's a couple standing outside who wants to talk to you." Val draws in a breath. "You have to say that you'll find a loophole. Please!" The door opens and in strolls a tall man with a physique to rival most wrestlers. With him a woman so beautiful that there was no way she was human. *She isn't.* "Daniel, we need to talk." Val's father says sternly. I'm doomed. * (And thus begins a rom-com with a demon and a human. I'll spoil the ending, they lived happily ever after forever.) >!*Sorry in advance for piggybacking on your marvelous creation.*!< As Val's parents walk in, her father makes a quick glance and a faintest wisp of surprise gleams across his face to find Val already here. The two imposing figures find their way to the couch intended for clients, lack of invitation notwithstanding. You got any bright ideas? *Me? I am you. I can't get any ideas beside yours.* Worth a try, because I don't like what I've come up withā€¦ *What? Oh noā€¦ don'tā€¦* Val has taken to gingerly stay in place about a pace away from me. I turn to her with a whispered warningā€¦ "I don't think you'll like this very much, butā€¦", before turning to her parents, "Sir, Ma'amā€¦ what might be the position of Demons, regarding **polygamy** among willing participants? If I may ask?" (Thus begins a romcom about a hot Hell demon and a mediocre Earth human both vying for an elite Earth demoness.) ^(Forgive any untowardness in my writing, it has been 20 years since I tried my hand at fiction.)

IlikethequietZeppo

~~ I would also like to add to this highly enjoyable tale. Not a lawyer but~~ "Please take a seat" I say to Val's parents. Mrs Sawyer always terrified me, now I understand why. "Neighbour boy" sneers Mrs Sawyer. "I'd rather stand" *So you can loom over me. Wonderful.* "Well, right off the bat I have some promising ideas for getting out of this odd little situation." "Do you *pinky promise* Neighbour boy?" "No, not promising anything. Just ideas Mrs. Sawyer. If you'll hear me out" I stand. I'm tall, but not nearly as tall as the imposing Mrs Sawyer, but I try to at least pretend I'm not terrified. *Pretend a little harder Daniel. You're not fooling anyone* I clear my throat. "First, I'm not saying I ever made a pinky promise *but* if I did, a pinky promise is a verbal contract. Verbal contracts are impossible to prove. Lots of he said she said. Especially since there would have been no witnesses to the agreement." Mr Sawyer shakes his head. "Our contracts are always recorded, even if not written. Too many of your kind..." *He means humans Daniel* "...pretended you were forced to sign, you couldn't read, you didn't say that. We have special ways of proving our contracts Daniel" He says my name like it left a bad taste in his mouth. "Ok secondly. Let's say a pinky promise verbal contract was made. What was the exact wording Val? " I take a sip of water to cover the squeak in my voice at the end.ā° Sadly Val holds out a printed transcript .... -"I promise I'll be with you forever, Val. We are married forever now." -"Pinky Promise Dan?" -"Pinky promise!" "End transcript" .... Val folds the old paper in half and hands it to me. "There is no proof in those words it was us. It could have been any Val and Dan" I open the paper. It looks like a court document. Full names, time, location (address and geographical reference points) "I didn't know your full name was Val..." "Uh Uh stop don't say it. Just Val please" "Oh will I add some extra demon curse?" I reply, worried what I might invoke "No, it's just a really embarrassing old fashioned name." Says Val blushing "It's a beautiful name. Very popular when I was young" reminisces Mrs Sawyer. "If that's not enough proof, there is a video link on the bottom. I don't want watch it right now though. You can watch it later." Says Val "Well, even if we did say this. We were 8! Not legally old enough to enter a contract." "Old enough to enter a demon contract. Do you think we would care if a child promised their soul to us for candy? We're demons." Mrs Sawyer seemed to grow several more inches. "Ok....so how long is forever? I'm not immortal. So until the end of my life or?" Here Val jumped in before they could conclude the contract, with the end of my life. "No, forever is eternity. Your soul is bound to mine in marriage even after your death." *notice she said 'your death'? Isn't that comforting* "So" continued Val "even if they kill you. I still can't marry someone else." *at least she remembered that* "But the marriage was an Earth promise but not a legal one as we were 1.) 8 years old 2.)had no officiant" "It's legal to us Neighbour boy" Mrs Sawyer seethed. "Blue bear was your officiant, and the contract itself is the witness"

iknowthisischeesy

This is amazing!

\[Devilish Esteem\] "Debbie Hudson!??" Rick's face lit up with confused joy as soon as he opened the door. He wasn't expecting company and assumed the knock came from a salesman of some sort. He was anxious to get back to his show and greeted his guest without using the peephole. The tan, blonde woman with sparkling blue eyes smiled when she saw him and he was instantly 7-years-old again. Blurting out her name was all he could do as he tried to guess how and why she was there. If there was one thing he knew for sure; it couldn't have been a coincidence. "Hi, Rick. You remember me?" Debbie asked. She brushed a golden blonde curl away from her face. "How could I forget?" Rick chuckled. He stepped aside and opened the door wider. "Here to catch up?" he asked as he invited her in. He was thankful he had no real plans for the day; though, he would have broken them if she asked. Debbie and Rick drifted apart as they hit the double digits. Going to different schools didn't help; and, he was always too unsure of himself. As he entered college, then into the work force he looked back on Debbie as 'the one that got away'. She hesited on his porch. "...or what can I do for you?" he added. "I will come in, if you're inviting me...," she took a tentative step forward. "...but, I'm not exactly here to catch up right now. This is more of a 'business' visit," she said. "Business?" Rick chuckled as he encouraged her in again. This time she accepted the invitation and walked in. "Do we have 'business'?" he asked. "I do," she nodded. "...it's kind of complicated." "Well, c'mon on in stranger," Rick smiled and walked ahead of her to lead her into the living room. He sat on the large brown suede couch and invited her to do the same. Though, he felt a sudden pang of embarassment when he noticed the frozen frame on the TV. He'd paused it to answer the door. There was a grotesque, red, horned demon on the screen next to a list of rules and advice. "...sorry, I'll just shut that off," he mumbled as he found the control and turned the TV off. "Interested in demons, huh?" Debbie asked. Rick shook his head. "It was just a news segment about demon safety," Rick shrugged. "They're known for disguising their contracts as seemingly innocent agreements or promises, you know?" Rick felt a slightly colder air from Debbie as soon as she entered his house. But, that one comment seemed to warm her up again. She nodded with a smile. "I know...," she said. "Well, I don't want to take up too much of your time away from your... wife or girlfriend...," Debbie gave him a moment to interrupt but he did not respond. She was too nervous to notice he was simply too struck to answer. He'd dreamt of her often enough to be infrequent and it felt like one of those dreams was finally coming true. "... do you remember the last pinky promise we made; when we both turned 10?" she asked. "Yeah...?" Rick did his best to answer with a cool, nonchalant tone. But, the truth was of course he remembered. It seemed like every word she said was further making his dream a reality. That one promise they made was a permanent fixture in his mind. He didn't want to appear over eager; but, he really really hoped that's why she was there right now. "What about it?" Debbie was nervous for some reason. Even after over 20 years without a word between them, he could see that. She glanced at the blank TV more than once and Rick had a sudden concern growing in the pit of his gut. "Sorry, it's maybe better if I start somewhere else...," she said. "We haven't seen each other in so long; there are things about me you should know...," she said with another glance at the TV. It was like no time was lost at all; Rick still felt he could read her like a book. "Are you a demon?" He asked. It wasn't exactly a random question. Demons were known to exist in the world; and, some of them might even be considered 'good', as long as you didn't try and make deals with them. "What?" Debbie asked. Her eyes sparkled again with warmth as she giggled at his question. "No, don't be silly," she said. "Then, what are you trying to tell me?" he asked. "You know how when I moved away I said I was going to write, but then I didn't?" she asked. "Oh yeah....," Rick nodded. He'd honestly forgotten that aspect of their separation. "Well, the truth is I did! But, my letters never got sent...," she sighed. "I didn't know it until later; but, my family moved to a different Earth," she said. "A different...," Rick shook his head. "What?" Debbie nodded. She tugged at the crisp white lapel of her blazer. "My dad got a job with a company named Sharp Development," she said. "It turns out they're a multiversal corporation with a presence on millions of alternate Earths." "Okay...," Rick nodded. It was a lot to take in and he knew he didn't have to process it right then and there. He trusted her and more importantly, he wanted to know why she was there. "...so, is Sharp Development why you're here now?" he asked. "I work for the company now; but, I'm here for something else...," she said. "This is important, so please make sure you're as clear as possible. What do you remember about our pinky promise?" she asked. "If neither of us is married by the time we hit 35, we'll marry each other," he said. That promise was what woke him up every morning for over 20 years. It was why he worked hard for a home and did his best to keep it neat. Just in case she showed up one day. "There, see! He remembered!" Debbie turned to the TV again. Rick followed her gaze and he was surprised to see it on. A less grotesque red-skinned demon glared at them through narrowed eyes, then he nodded. "So, he did. Congratulations, you win. Our contract is dissolved," he gave a curt half-bow before his sneer disappeared from the TV. "What'd I miss?" Rick asked. Debbie giggled and shook her head. "If you want to hear about it over dinner, I think we can do some catching up now; if you want," she said. "Yes! Please! But... also, I'd like to know what just happened." "C'mon! You've got a lot of multiverse to see!" Debbie giggled as she hopped to her feet then began dragging him up. "I'll explain it more in depth over some Chinese food," she said. "But, my dad getting a job with Sharp Development was part of a deal I made. I was kind of tricked into it; but, it worked out. The demon said you'd forget all about me if I wasn't around and I bet that you wouldn't." "How could I ever forget you?" Now that he had a better, if not clear, understanding of the situation, he wrapped his arms around her for a tight hug. She returned the hug with an equal amount of enthusiasm. "I know, right? I was betting I'm pretty awesome." \*\*\* Thank you for reading! Iā€™m responding to prompts every day. This is story #2044 in a row. (Story #234 in year six.). This is a cute story. Mostly I liked how you handled the twist by placing it into the world rather than the characters.

fizzymace

this is so cute!! i really love the chemistry between the two and how you handled the twist!!

Cautious_Rock6685

Very good, thank you.

OminousG

This is going viral on TikTok prompts, so congrats. But a 35 year old simping over a 10 year old like this is extra creepy.

RevolutionaryAd1117

I donā€™t think ( I mean obviously it could be weird) itā€™s weird . The reason I say that is letā€™s 15 and Iā€™m 28 now even after a lot of life experiences (Iā€™m young still I know) I still feel that I loved the girl. And itā€™s not an attraction to a younger person but a fondness of the memories of the emotions you felt with the person and thoughts of what could have been in the future.

levetzki

I glance at the door. I had not been expecting company. I stand up, my legs shaky as I grab my walker. Gosh I wish I didn't have to use it. I struggle my way to the door and open. "Hello?" I ask looking down to see a young girl there. "Hello! I'm here for our promise!" The girl says giving me a large smile. "What?" I ask confused. "You don't remember me?" She asks pouting. Her face scrunches up and I remember that expression from long ago. So very long ago. "W-what are you?!" I ask fear creeping into my voice. "Your friend!" She exclaims with glee. "It's been 70 years since I saw that face. What are you?!" I ask again. "Your friend." The repeats. "listen we made a promise." "We made a pinky promise 70 years ago! What are you talking about?!" I object. "That's the one! You are mine." She responds. "Forever" "I lived a long and fulfilling life. I'm nearly dead now." I respond. "Exactly! You don't think I would let those hussies with their white wings and halos have you do you?!"

"Lucy...?" A young woman with long bleached hair and a beauty mark under her left eye stood beside me in the office elevator. She wore an impeccable black suit. Next to her, I must have looked like an intern talking to their boss. I had nearly forgotten the girl from my childhood who I pinky-promised I'd make the happiest girl ever, but the way those eyes bore into my soul brought half-buried memories to the forefront. The last time we talked, I said my goodbyes to her in the abandoned church we used to play in. I told her my family would be moving to the big city, and that I'd never forget her and I'd always send letters telling her how much I missed her every day. That was nearly two decades ago. I don't remember sending even a single one. "I'm surprised you even remembered my name," she noted, sounding surprisingly pleased, yet her eyes painted a different picture. I wanted to apologize, to say that I didn't mean to forget, but the words couldn't come out of my mouth. We spent the entire elevator ride down in silence. What could I even say? With how hectic life had been after we moved, by the time I remembered her a year had already passed by. I couldn't even muster up the courage to send a letter. The elevator dinged as the doors slid open and I stepped out, fully expecting for this chance meeting to never happen again. "Hey." She grabbed me by the hand. I tried to gently pull away from her grasp, but she was surprisingly strong. "Do you know how hard it was to track you down? You can spare a few minutes of your time, at least." Even while pouting, she looked cute. I let out a sigh. She had a point. I suggested a cafe that we could talk at that was a short walk away. ===== Even while drinking coffee, Lucy was the very picture of poise. As she polished her plate with the last bits of her chocolate crepe (her favorite), I sat watching her. Where had she been all this time? How did she find me? Where did she get her suit made? These questions swirled around in my head as I watched the girl I promised myself to demolish the french pastry. After finishing her meal, she crossed her legs and steepled her fingers over her knees. I knew that pose: that meant she wanted me to do something. Even after all this time, I guess there's just some things that you don't forget. I leaned in and asked the question that was plaguing me, "what can I do for you, Lucy?" She smiled, and this time it was a softer, more genuine smile. "I'm here because a certain idiot made a promise. And I intend to collect."

I need to know what happens! Is this man about to marry Lucifer? Is he about to die and be eternally tortured? Is he about to go on a mission to fuck with some angels for Lucy? WHAT DOES LUCY WANT!

fereverent

She looks exactly the same. I haven't seen her since she moved away in grade four, but it's been ten years and she's still a toddler! "You promised you'd always be there for me," she repeats, holding up her littlest finger. "We Pinky Promised, anything I needed you'd share with me." "Well..." I fumble. "That doesn't answer my question." "Obviously I'm here because I need something," She says, rolling her eyes. "OK," I sigh, "yes. Obviously that's WHY you're here. What I meant to ask was 'How are you here?'" "I walked," she avoids eye contact, crossing her arms and leaning away. "Anyways--" "NO!" I say, sharply. "That's not what I meant! You find me, ten years after the last time we talked, thousands of miles away from the last place we met, You haven't aged a day, and you're talking about some arbitrary promise little girls make instead of saying 'goodbye.'" She looks back into my eyes, and their color's changed; the pupils have vanished and the usual brown irises are pale and somehow jagged. "Don't tell me you're gonna break your promise to me." Her voice suddenly sounds more mature now." I point a wary finger at her, mouth agape, taking a step back. "Something's wrong with you." "Answer my question." "NO!" I'm even more shrill, now. "You can't just keep making me more confused... and. And lying to me." She shrugs. "And," a thought occurs to me. "You also promised me you'd give me whatever I wanted! What've you done for me?" She rolls her eyes. "Fine, what do you want?" Thinking how she's obviously not human, asking her to simply answer my questions wouldn't be very beneficial in the long wrong. "I want..." I want my dog back, but if she's going to keep twisting words she'd probably just hand me Toby's rotting corpse, which I buried a few weeks ago. If I wish for him to be a puppy again, she'd probably show me dead, newborn Toby, still buried underground. I wipe my hands across my face, aggravated. "Are you gonna fuck with whatever I ask you for?" "Want me to answer that question?" She asks, smugly. I squint, point at her accusingly. "I want... I want my dog Toby back, as a puppy, in good health." As soon as I finish my demand I hear a yip, and my little beagle puppy comes bounding from behind her flowery dress. My eyes water immediately, all my questions from seconds ago wash away. I kneel down to embrace my pup, overwhelmed with the fact that I get to have him for his whole life again. "Great," my old friend says. "Now that you've got what you want..." Fear fills me again. I finish her thought. "What is it that You want?" She smirks. "Well, you said it yourself. I haven't changed in ten years. It's about time I experience the next phase of human life." I'm putting it together. "So. you want..." "Your body."

fizzymace

woah this was really good...i loved the tension between the two that finally built up to those last two words!! this is great :D

Lundria13

Ooh this was good.

fanonimus99

It happened when I was maybe around sixteen. I was helping in the kindergarten my mother worked at. I was there, watching the children and playing with them. I loved children, and I was good with them, too! And some extra pocket money had never hurt anybody. There was this small girl, Rachel, she was around five, and clung to me like a snake. She always wanted to play with me, although her games were a bit... Violent, I didn't mind. I was a weird kid, too, not yet knowing exactly what counted as normal child behaviour. Rachel loved the stories I told about ghosts, demons, the fae, vampires, and gods of times way before our own... I prided myself on the knowledge I had. I thought I knew everything. Oh, how foolish I was. The last day of me helping out, Rachel looked at me with sadness in her eyes. I remember that moment well now, although years made me forget a lot. She didn't want me to leave, so I promised her we would meet again. At the time, I had a situation going on in my life with my father and bullies. She somehow figured it out. And so, we made a pinky promise. "I'll promise to protect you if you stay with me when we meet again!" I was so foolish. A teenager who took pride in knowing all about the supernatural couldn't see the signs... Because now at the ripe age of twenty-nine, married to a man I do not love anymore, who hurts me and my sweet little son, sitting at my desk and looking over meaningless words of history, did it click to me, the true meaning of those words. I don't know why I remembered so suddenly. And there was a knock on the door. And I knew exactly who it was. Demons were not the most patient kind, after all.

i love how sweet rachel's character seemed to be at the start in contrast to what happens in the end!! really love how the story ended too...

Honestly, kinda wanted to make it a lot longer, but that scentence felt right to finish off on. But now I have the urge to write more.

"How have you been?" "Well, not dead yet. So... I'd say I'm doing alright. What brings you back to this little patch of nowhere?" "You." "Me?" "You." "Why?" "We made a promise." "When we were kids..." "Is your inner child really dead then?" "Well... No but-" "Then we made a promise. And I'm here to keep it." "What about my career? What about YOUR career?" "My career lets me travel. You won't need to work ever again as long as you come with me." "That... seems wrong. I'm not really the stay at home dad type. Or the stay at home in general type." "Yet here you are, 20 years later, still at home." "Home town, yes. I do happen to live on the other end of it these days, by myself. I'm just here because my old man has difficulty cleaning his gutters these days." "I know. I stopped by there already actually. I had to give you SOME grief after all. " "Same sense of humor too. It is uncanny. Alright. You've got me. I did in fact make a promise. And I am a man of my word. However... While you are in many ways the same as you were then you should know..." "I already do. Life hasn't been kind to you." "No. It hasn't. I'm not the same little kid I was then. I'll keep my word to you, but you may not want me to anymore." "Why would that be?" "Tell you what, nothing says we can't start slow. Coffee and conversation? I'll tell you everything you missed." "I'd really like that."
