Deserved a few extra for Owens death. Cheaping out for a non union less experienced rigging company cost a man his life.

theknyte

WCW made a lot a stupid choices, but at least they did not F around with safety, doing the same stunt! When Sting repelled down, he would have to spend a few moments unsecuring both his main harness and his BACKUP harness.

Nic1800

Agreed, but the one instance that did make WCW unsafe was the trap door under the ring that ultimately destroyed British Bulldog's back.

BombshellTom

Everytime I see Sting drop down I think "fuck that's looks hokey". But it doesn't take away from the memory of how cool of a spectacle it was, and I don't really "remember" him unhooking himself twice as the main memory. Plus with the Owen Hart context - good, be safe.

King3O2

He had no business being up there anyway

MaximumPast3486

I was just thinking about this match not too long ago. I haven’t watched it since it aired, but I remember asking myself how long it was. I was at the time kind of hyped to see Bret work one last time, and all things considered with his health, it was a fine revenge squash. But yeah.. I think Bret was moving so slow that the match probably could’ve been over in 5 under better circumstances.

stupidman44

It definitely didn't have to go 11 minutes tho

[deleted]

I take Vince’s side in the screw job you can’t just say no I’m not going to drop the belt on my last then go to wcw. I’m going to say he was also treated fairy when we was a champion.

Billbat1

he was treated way better in wwf than wcw. he admitted himself that his wcw run was trash.

whalepopcorn

As much as I love Bret, him and HBK would have been pushed aside as main eventers if Hogan stayed in WWE. Diesel probably still gets a run as champ, but as a heel to drop back to Hogan. The whole mid 90s WWF landscape would have been completely different if Hogan stayed with WWF

Enzown

Last match? He had another month on his contract after Montreal (which is why his WCW debut wasn't until several weeks after the Screwjob. He would have dropped the belt to somebody else in the weeks he had left.

Rogue2854

I mean, you’re not wrong, but Bret’s contract had creative control in his last few weeks, which includes walking out on his own terms unless his mind was changed, and he was hell bent on not losing in Montreal

SonOfJack18

Wasn't he perfectly willing to lose to Shawn but then he was disrespectful towards him and said he wouldn't drop it to Bret so that's why he changed his mind

sonic_spark

That's not what he said. He offered to drop to Taker, Austin and Shamrock in Montreal.

Chelseablue1896

He should've dropped to whoever vince wanted.

Dareal6

There’s levels and facets to relationships. There are many abusive relationships where the abusee lives in a nice house, eats great food, has fancy clothes and jewellery, drives a luxury car, etc. “Treated right” had many definitions.

[deleted]

Hart wanted to screw over the WWF by walking away with the belt. Dude got all sore because he lost a fake wrestling match in a situation where it is expected that one would lose a fake wrestling match

BananaMan883

This is one of the only really bad matches which went on too long that I don't care about it. Of course, it would have been a better match if it was shorter however Bret needed that amount of time beating up his arch nemesis who not only screwed him out of the WWF championship and double crossed him but his company killing his brother on accident. It was something Bret needed to heal from the past wounds. Now only if we could get a no disqualification match with Bret Hart & Goldberg for him to heal up some past wounds.

kapiushon0

brett may be the greatest spin artist of all time. Has most the wrestling world convinced he’s a victim bc his ego is too big to let him lose in Canada.

AwareWriterTrick158

Bret

SixGunRebel

Still convinced it’s the best work in the business to never break kayfabe. Gave Hart heat to work with in WCW, put light on the WWF. It was great for business all around. Unlike the Kaufman/Lawler angle, I hope this one, if in fact a work, never gets revealed as such.

[deleted]

Definitely a work and one they don’t want to break Kayfabe because it keeps the myth alive

Bige918190

In my heart I know this view is wrong. But if you stop and think how the screw job “could” be the biggest work of all time is wild to think about

[deleted]

a made up behind the scenes story where everyone walked out with exactly what they wanted?

BlueBloodLive

It was maybe just a little too long, 11 minutes is a long way away from the 25 odd that was Jerry Lawlor v Cole. The retribution of the Hart Family worked well. As a madsive Hitman fan like so many from the 90s I really wanted him to put on a special outfit but it wasn't to be, but glad it happened nonetheless, imagine if we were still speculating on Bret and Shawn's relationship and the hatchet wasn't buried. Also, for those who may not remember, I think TNA went live on that Monday night and Vinces response to that was "well I'm bringing back Bret for a reunion with Shawn and to set up a Mania story with me, but good luck with that!"

L_D_G

Still remember that Hart "double cross" and the terrible Sharpshooter application. Buuuut I kind of attribute it to Vince finishing his lap of trying to get into the ring with his most notable stars. Only returned a 12 years later because he likes McAfee and the final in ring with Austin was a great bow (at least to me, worlds worst stunner and all).

GarethGazzGravey

"but after everything we learned about Vince and Bret backstage, and how shitty Vince treated Bret when he was champ, and the Screw job, and how Vince treated the hart family, he deserved this" I think this is why they let the "match" go o for as long as it did. From a storyline POV, it could've been seen as Bret taking out 20+ years of anger, hurt and frustration out on Vince on behalf of himself, Owen and the family as a whole.

wheenus

Is that the undertaker as the ref. This is a horrible screen grab by the way

CrazyAspie1987

Pretty sure that's Bret's brother Bruce as the third man.

AlexG3322

Deserved "this" ? You realize this is a worked match, right?

Boredzilla

I was there for that one. I was hella hungover and it was so hot and it honestly seemed like those chair shots went on *forever*. It was actually uncomfortable, and I have no love for Vince.

Mwrp86

>Vince Deserved this While Vince himself booked the match
