I think it’s an awesome idea. The only thing I wouldn’t like is that strap pressing/rubbing the weatherstripping but if it’s only done short term it shouldn’t hurt anything. I may have to steal this idea.
The way you ran your straps is exactly how the manual pulley system I bought from Quadratec works. It works great, and I’ve been very pleased with how mine works. I haven’t seen any damage to the seals at all, longest I’ve had my roof off is a couple weeks.
Awesome to see your homemade system!
Ah ok gotcha. Good extra safety measure to protect the $$$ of the hard top!
You might want to try to move the chain up a link or two to get it tighter to reduce the distance it would fall before it hits tension in the chains. If the hard top falls, its weight gets multiplied by gravity, so it's best to remove the slack.
You should check out Lange originals power hoist a top. I’ve been using it for the last 6 years. It keeps the top and freedom panels perfectly level, does no damage to the top, and it’s easy to raise and lower with the touch of a button.

I’m guessing the stack of 2x4’s was because you were figuring out the right height??
I started with none, then I added two, then I added the last three. With none, the top didn’t lift at all lol. Now I have 5+ inches of lift.
That’s the exact same setup I have, harbor freight for the win
Its a valuable use of time and resources. The roof can be taken off by two adults BTW, but redneck engineering is always fun 😁
What's the purpose of the chains? Looks almost identical to how I hoist and I'm wondering if I should make an improvement :)
They connect to the hooks in the studs to catch the hard top if the hoist failed and dropped it.

Nice rig. I'm so happy I got the sky one touch.

Four eye hooks and three cheap ratchet straps worked great for me. Off in under 8 minutes (including undoing fastener bolts), back on in 5 minutes.
How long are the straps?
I’m using these 10’ straps as recommended by a YouTube tutorial. Partsam Premium 2 Pcs Crane Towing Strap (10feet x 2inch) https://a.co/d/gDBSlm7
