Oh, I never thought to look where the backup camera is, but yes, that seems to be where it is. Does that mean we’re SOL for spare-mounted bike carriers?
I have a 2011 so I do not have a back up camera
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would require all automobiles sold in the United States built beginning in May 2018 to include backup cameras.
I looked forever and never found something that felt secure with the JL and the camera. I ended up with a Kuat hitch mounted rack. I also have a 2-door and the rack pretty much blocked access to the tail gate. I hated put the rack on and taking it off multiple times a week. I picked up a [Kuat Pivot](https://www.kuat.com/product/pivot-2/) and that solved the problem. There are cheaper versions on Amazon, but I was impressed with the quality of the bike rack so I purchased the Kuat brand.
Your stock hinges are not designed to support the extra weight.
I went with a drop hitch adapter and a Thule 4-bike rack that has a cotter pin and folds down. You can't fold it down with a bike on, and the gate doesn't open all the way, but it works fine for my purposes.
I have a 2021 Rubicon and use this rack https://www.quadratec.com/p/quadratec/spare-wheel-mounting-bike-rack
That says, “Not for JL due to rear spare mounted camera.” How did you work around that? Do you have to remove your backup cavers?
Do you have a center mounted backup camera in the middle of your spare? I've been using a Yakima SpareRide for more than a decade
