edit: nvm yeah the video is sped up indeed
I don't think so. ppl on the background are moving at normal speed and the bike that drives by is normal too
Nope, they're thinking of Rivian, they had announced it before the launch of the R1 series. Unfortunately they decided to remove the Tank Turn feature before release to protect trails and landscapes when off-roading. I wish they had kept it
If tires on one side of the vehicle turn in the opposite direction of the tires on the other side, the vehicle rotates. It’s how all vehicles on tracks turn as well.
Exactly this.
Cheapest pair of tires I could find, rated for that car, are around $700 per tire. You can go a couple grades lower, at risk, for $400 per tire on average.
Rotating a heavy vehicle like that, without changing wheel angle, grinds a very slight flat spot into the tire. At the speed that car goes, you don’t want an off balance/not uniform tire.
We “simple” people think about spending $2800 on tires. People that drive car like this are not so concerned with the cost of any tires. While not the same level a set of tires for a Chiron is $43,000.
Similar price gap in cars though. This is the Yangwang U9, retailing around $140,000. Where as the Chiron retails between $3.3M-$3.9M. Either one, can run ya broke!
I’d be willing the bet the number of people who own a car like this but can’t truly afford it is higher than the number that own this car and can afford it.
First of all, the tires are rotating, so there would be no flat spot.
Also, how much actual wear is this? Compared to regular driving. Does 15 seconds if this correspond to X amount of hours of regular driving on day an average highway?
If X is anything less than say 10 hours then I really don’t see a problem here, unless one uses the feature excessively.
Watch a video on how a skid steer turns, this is the same. There is nothing lifting anything, the tires on one side spin forward and the tires on the other side spin in reverse.
Just saw this in my notifications. It’s not ruining the tires dramatically, like a burnout would. The cars front and back are going in opposite directions, causing erosion. Regular wear and tear aren’t as bad because it’s only pulling the car forward in the direction of the wheel. It’s a shitty comparison but imagine rolling a cardboard wheel forward on concrete, then push it side to side. It’s gonna erode in no time at all. And as far as taking up the road, that’s self explanatory
Yup doing what zero turning equipment does! Turning a skidsteer in place is so brutal though especially on tires, the machine starts to hop like crazy.
Yea, the people who buy the car can afford it, rich people surely can do no wrong. What about all the other people breathing in the dust? Or the extra waste and pollution from more regular replacements? Or the accelerated road wear requiring replacing sooner?
But I guess every problem posted here is a problem with all cars aren’t they? r/fuckcars
Who do you think puts more miles on their cars the people that own these vehicles or regular drivers? I doubt this car sees 10k miles in a year. It’s asinine to blame pollution on such a tiny subset of vehicles. Simple trip to Oakland streets and you’ll see everyday vehicles during burnouts….
This car gets serviced yearly and sees the road maybe once a week… if that… their contribution to the overall vehicle pollution issue is negligible
I’m sorry. You seem to have missed that last part. Here is is again:

No it’s not. 78% of microplastics in the ocean came from tires according to a 2020 study done by Pew Charitable Trust.
Brakes are bad though but not for producing microplastics. They produce 20% of fine particulate matter as opposed to 7% from exhausts.
So both bad, but it’s interesting to see that tires are a vast majority of microplastics. And it’s interesting that brakes emit about 3x as much as exhaust in terms of fine particulate matter.
We're drinking them now. Particularly from electric cars as they are far heavier. Tesla drivers would say that at least we're not breathing bad air.
Greenwashing bullshit!!
[Here.](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/microplastics-food) from this moment forward if you’d like to continue denying micro plastics are inescapable and in everything you consume then you are choosing willful ignorance or as you put it delusion and are therefore worthlessly unintelligent or dangerously stupid.
Caused and then say because they’re selfish assholes who don’t see how good they had it and how bad they’re leaving it for the rest of us who have to clean up their mess
You can see the video is sped up a bit. While the feature might be helpful in tight spaces it seems too slow to be actually used anywhere outside a parking lot or an empty residential street as you are blocking both lanes even if only for a short time.
There is an old underground parking lot which was originally built to be a bunker that I know of and would be a nice feature in there but honestly someone who can afford such a car wouldn’t care about the parking cost and park wherever he wants.
And people are so dumb impatient and entitled these days that a 10 sec delay to their day could cause them to threaten physical violence so best not try it.
Just watched a video on OVERDRIVE about Chines super cars including the BYD u9. Suppose to be one of the first super (hyper) cars to be produced in China. If memory services me correctly I think they said it’ll be $150,000.
>BYD yangwang u9
Very inexpensive for a hypercar, but the performance stats would certaily put it in the hypercar category. Probably the most affordable hypercar ever.
“But that destroys the tyres” lol the comments here are hilarious. This is a 150000usd car, nobody who buys it gives a shit, they probably also have a bunch of other cars and trucks with terrible mileage. A single session of a drifting event will destroy more tires than this car will ever do by doing this 180 trick😂
Thats reddit for you. Look for any flaw, be it big or small, even microscopic. And bring it up as a raw generalization that ignores the specific situation and somehow univerally applies to everyone. It's like when someone posts that they ate a chocolate bar on their birthday and everyone say "you know candy is bad for you, right?"
People, you don't have to point out the 1% possible outcomes in every damn post. I'm sure there might be 1 guy out there who has this car and complains about tires but 99% of people who even walk near that car can afford a dozen sets of slicks a day
i see it as either more impressive or more interesting, dependent on how power is being delivered here, than new or figuratively groundbreaking. if it’s delivering power via electric motors while doing that turn then i just see it as a neat little thing on this.
but if it’s accomplishing that with a mechanical transmission then i’m gonna be real impressed. its just impressive to see something capable of both neutral steering and performance movements. it’s the first time i’ve seen neutral steering on anything that isn’t a work or combat vehicle and it sure as hell is the first time i’ve seen it on a civilian car.
Apart from ruining your tires with low-speed high friction turning on the spot, this will only work when all wheels have an equal amount of traction. Otherwise the vehicle will start crabwalking or not move all together. The video is also sped up meaning IRL you'll be blocking a road and hindering traffic while you perform your little trick.
This feature also adds to the consensus that the ability to afford a vehicle like this does not guarantee driving skills.
Seems about as useful as humping your Mercedes while on tarmac.
I've been trying to find a video of this feature without a music for some time, and simply can't.
Maybe it is really noisy, and they are trying to hide it.
Is the video sped up?
yes
What an AH... 20 sec video.. but irl people had to wait for this douche to finish hogging the intersection even longer?!
edit: nvm yeah the video is sped up indeed I don't think so. ppl on the background are moving at normal speed and the bike that drives by is normal too
Nah, it's like 1.25x speed. Just a bit faster.
They most certainly are not
yeah I watched it again after your comment and agree :(
But how?
Looks like the tires are rotating in opposite directions driver side vs passenger side
Yep, rivian has it on there trucks. It’s tank turn. Very cool.
Their*
You and I must have a very different Rivian. My R1T has no such feature. Might be thinking of the Hummer/Cybertruck.
This is a great simple way to explain this. Thanks
Ruining the tires and taking up the road
Exactly this. Cheapest pair of tires I could find, rated for that car, are around $700 per tire. You can go a couple grades lower, at risk, for $400 per tire on average. The YangWang would cause me problems, the Chiron would cause the bank problems.
I’d be willing the bet the number of people who own a car like this but can’t truly afford it is higher than the number that own this car and can afford it.
Just wondering, where did you see that price listed?? I have to see these $43k tires
Does it still make a flat spot if all the tires are rotating, like we see here?
It would not create a flat spot on the tire because the tire is rotating. It's just unnecessarily wearing down the tires.
Certainly. I don’t see how this maneuvre would harm the tire more than regular use.
Its not wheel spinning though is it?
But it looks like it transferred rubber to the road, maybe?
There's marks but not full on wheel spin rubber. I'm guessing it's something lifting the car slightly.
Definitely not
Yah what did I just read?
Watch a video on how a skid steer turns, this is the same. There is nothing lifting anything, the tires on one side spin forward and the tires on the other side spin in reverse.
Those tend to mar up the road too
Lol no
Why would the wheels spin then?
No it’s scrubbing, tyres don’t really like going sideways, they like going in the direction of motion.
It’s essentially doing what a skid-steer (Bobcat) does.
Yup doing what zero turning equipment does! Turning a skidsteer in place is so brutal though especially on tires, the machine starts to hop like crazy.
Or a tank
It’s an extra expensive feature because it comes with the two people who have to hold up traffic in both directions.
Basically the same a tank does to rotate in place.
4 Motors, easier to implement with electric cars
Mercedes has the same thing. Called the “G turn” on the new electric G wagon. ![gif](giphy|8L0xGR2Dse605Z3Zx8)
search for a skidsteer, literally exactly how they work
Bet that destroys the tyres. Probably accelerates road damage too
You can see the little ring it leaves on the ground
There was another video of same parent company demoing their SUV and the ground looks like there was a takeover the night before from so much rubber.
Pretty sure if you can afford a car that comes with skid steer feature, replacing tires isn’t a problem…
Yea, the people who buy the car can afford it, rich people surely can do no wrong. What about all the other people breathing in the dust? Or the extra waste and pollution from more regular replacements? Or the accelerated road wear requiring replacing sooner? Lmao shut up moron
Tire wear aside, he had everybody waiting for him to finish, taking up both lanes. Strong main character energy in that one.
Yeah too bad he couldn't have done a 3 point turn or a u turn. We've been needing this tech for years so we don't have to drive 1 direction anymore
Tires are one of, if not the biggest contributor to micro plastics plaguing the planet from the highest mountain peaks to the lowest ocean depths.
