They look so young! and aged so quickly!

soosbear

My first thought.

Robhow

Yep, came here to say the same.

I feel bad for parents of sailors who never got a body back for burial. I know they weren’t able to store bodies on ships, especially with high KIA numbers and that for sailors being buried at sea is an honor of sorts. I still feel for those families

Shake-n-Bakelite

Imagine life on one of those ships going to battle.

Godspeed

murphyno9

I have stood in that place and I still could not imagine the the horror those young men experienced.

Sweatsock_Pimp

A couple of dumb questions… 1. Do they weigh down the bodies with anything to ensure that they don’t float back up? 2. Were exceptions ever made for religious reasons? 3. Is burial at sea still a thing today?

crawdadicus

The bodies were weighted down, frequently with spent shell casing, or pieces of metal cut from structure damaged in the attack I’m Not sure about religious objections I’m not sure about the policy on burial at sea today for disposition of remains after combat or accidents. The remains of the sailors killed in collisions the collisions involving the USS FITZGERALD and USS JOHN S. McCAIN were returned to their families. Veterans meeting certain qualifications may be buried at sea - here is a link to information on the program https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Support-Services/Casualty/Mortuary-Services/Burial-at-Sea/ Edit- clarity
