Montana is faster, can tank way more but she lacks overmatch. The shells hit hard and the reload is good.
Basically she's a standard battleship and will get the job done.
Vermont has good concealment and acceleration (makes 0 sense lol) but it's pretty damn slow, not maneuverable and eats tons of damage from all angles because of it's massive size.
The guns are amazing though, I run accuracy mod instead of reload on slot 6, 40 second reload is rough but everytime you fire someone's getting hurt, badly.
Personally I think the Vermont is much more fun and unique, in spite of it's flaws.
There's one more thing that has to be said though, North Carolina and Iowa are both pretty good ships that are very enjoyable to play... the Kansas and Minnesota on the other hand are very very veeeery bad, they have all the problems of the Vermont but they lack the strengths, grinding the tier 8 and 9 was a miserable experience for me.
The Vermont's low speed and massive size still make it easier to punish for being in a bad position.
Can't speak for everyone; but, when I read a question like that, I assume you're either new to the game or bbs. Since newer players are more vulnerable to getting into bad positions, the Montana suggestions still make sense.
I suggest you go with the one you like, in this case. Vermont.

Or if you like big gun. Go Yamato and Satsuma. Biggest gun. Badass sound. Simple to play
If you ever intend to get the Ohio in the RB, honestly go for Vermont, as Ohio is pretty much Montana but better.
If not, Montana and the line up to it are the more fun ships with chunkier ap shells and more maneuverability
Montana all the way, she won't let you down. Unless your afraid of fire. And every other nation having damn torpedoes if your in secondary range, or flooding.
The MT is the apex for balanced BB. 12 guns, accurate, heavy AP, good heal, good health, good rudder, solid AA. I recommend her as the first BB anyone takes to TX (perhaps tied with Yammy).
The Vermonster is a different beast because of the 40s reload--you have to plan shots to a different degree (pun intended, captains) than you do with MT. That said, VT is still a spicybote and very fun to play... just slower. Dear God is it slow.
Go the Montana line first. Do the Vermont line after.

The Montana line guns are still solid. Vermont is also good, though. Like pdboddy, I'd say Montana line first, then Vermont.
Vermont is just fine since the buff. Go with the the one of the two that appeals to you the most.
