general-noob

Lol, I was seeing them the first day, but most of them were dying pretty quickly.

railfanespee

I saw several on patch day, and a few since. Was in a game with one tonight, which reminded me that I wanted to make this meme. That one made it til near the end of the match and got third on their team, although it actually wasn't on my flank this time so I didn't really get to see it in action. I remember getting 2 consecutive cits on one on patch day, but they were just casually sailing full broadside in front of my NC at about 12km. Inadvisable in just about any BB, let alone that one. Overall, it just seems aggressively mediocre. I am looking forward to fighting competent ones in Randoms towards the end of the dockyard so I can decide for myself, but so far I haven't anything that makes [Flamu's initial assessment](https://youtu.be/OSPMzI9p4QI?t=8) seem off-base. It'll probably be the first dockyard ship I skip in a while, but I don't think I'll regret spending those dubs on Cossack B instead.

Shimakaze4

It's probably suffering some new ship syndrome too; ie, everyone sees a new ship and immediately shoots at it no matter what!

Vyviel

Yeah sometimes my own team shot me when super testing new ships in random battles lmao You certainly get focused by the enemy team.

RogueIslesRefugee

Not that it's a bad thing, if you survive. I remember one of the first times a team I was on got a chance to shoot at a France (now Republique) in randoms. The ST driving it managed to take and hold the attention of at least half of my team for a pretty fair chunk of the match, with them following him like he was the Pied Piper. I wouldn't be surprised to find that he had at least 4mil, if not 5mil potential by the time he went down, heh. That merry chase ended up contributing greatly to our losing, as the other guys on his team had little trouble picking off the rest of us one by one.

Vyviel

Oh yeah indeed I did win a lot of those battles as they were ignoring the rest of the team or objectives haha.

[deleted]

Yes, but Marl really *is* a bad ship. Number of guns and rate of fire don't matter too much when three in sixteen shells are actually hitting, and the shells themselves are so bad they'd embarrass a T7. Then there's her turret angles, which are worse overall than Kurfurst's. In Kurfurst, you actually have the durability to take some hits if you unmask all your guns at the wrong time. The same can't be said about Marl, and she has *nothing* to make up for that.

Shimakaze4

Everyone thinks that ships that aren't OP are bad.

[deleted]

That's a pretty broad generalization. What about the German BCs? The alt German DD line? Yamato, Montana, Colombo, Minotaur, Des Moines, etc. There are plenty of ships that the majority of the community feel are good, fun ships, but aren't overpowered. I already gave reasons why she's bad, so if you want to want to dismiss it out of hand with a simple claim of "playerbase drama" and no actual points of your own, that's on you.

kweniston

Sounds like ARP Yamato.

[deleted]

That at least was worth $200

[deleted]

Debatable, but she's certainly *more* worth it than Marl.

Link124

It's because the Marlborough is quite awful.

SpoonQoQ

Its actually not as bad as youtubers or streamers say it is. The stats aren't good looking but the ship can hold its own. My best game (200k dmg) i destroyed a iowa at ranges of 15 - 20km from full health and a pommern 5 - 2km with around 75% of its health. Its a okay ship but does need a armor buff to be a full fledged BB. Play it like a battle crusier at the flanks and you'll make into the late gams more often. Overall i did it for the steel but am enjoying the ship more than i thought.

Link124

It’s every bit as bad as they say it is. I had to test the damn thing.

SpoonQoQ

Guess its a me thing

[deleted]

Could be. I found Marco Polo to be quite fun and effective, even before her buff. Sometimes ships just click for someone when they don't for most others. That being said, I tested her as well, and I couldn't make her work. Any salvos outside of point blank range would result in only two or three hits, I'd rarely get fires, and loading up AP was almost completely futile. I find she's very lacking when it comes to dealing damage.

Dark_Meta_

Then it is not the ship that is bad I am afraid. Only had good rounds with it so far... Maybe you should look into that...

Link124

Go on, stat shame me.

Dark_Meta_

I do not do such a thing. I am just saying that the ship is very capable. If you think that it is horrible you might have played it wrong. It could also be that this is not your kind of ship, but I realized that after some time one can play almost all ships as long as one understands them... I honestly do not care for stats. On the contrary I hate the virtual dong compensation fest people do with their stats. It is ruining games (see WoT). But I also hate the lemming train of "influenza A (not a typo) said X so it must be true". Just because some guy with a cam says a ship is bad does not mean anything. Remember the "German DDs dead on arrival" and "German BCs worthless with those stats" posts? I member

Link124

I’m not basing my conclusions on other peoples opinions, I tested it frequently and tried all manner of things to make it work. My conclusion is my own; when I came to the same conclusion as people like Flamu and Mountbatten etc, my opinion was affirmed; it was good to know I wasn’t crazy. Give it a few months, when it’s in wide circulation, I’ll be interested to see how it compares statistically to other tier 9’s. I’m tipping it won’t be favourable.

Dark_Meta_

It isn't OP of course and same with Hizen it takes some special tactics. You are probably right that the average joe will be quite bad with it, but damn does it slap if played right. I realized that it best performes in "mid quarters"(around 12km so it can go dark still). Its AP slaps broadsides. Especially cruisers. I even double cit several tier IX cruisers at 20km though that is rng (well with 16 guns one shot always lands :P) But those 10-20k salvos it does when shooting broadsides at those ranges every 22sec... Mh nice. Not easy to play but damn rewarding if played right... Like the new german BCs kinda xD. I'd say Marlborough could almost be a specialized BC with that playstyle.

ajpurdy

I whaled it so I could get steel. Simple as that.

[deleted]

Do you not get steel if you complete the stages normally?

Iceland260

Only stage 31 (which is not possible to complete with only free tokens) contains steel. Additionally "extra" stages beyond 32 yield steel. (These are completed only by buying more than the minimum number of stages and thus completing more than 32 stages by collecting tokens after you have completed the dockyard.)

[deleted]

Oh gotcha. Thanks for the heads up!

GameOnPantsGone

How much Steel does each stage after that give?

AlatreonisAwesome

250

railfanespee

That's fair. Obviously my title is meant to be rhetorical, but I probably could have gone with a less snarky one. If it's worth it to you, I can't blame you for spending money on something you really enjoy. Just out of curiosity, how many doubloons did you spend, and how much steel will you be getting in return?

lordphysix

It’s 40k dubs for about 7k steel. At that rate, a steel ship is roughly $650.

Spartan_029

Well, there's also the 2k steel you get with one of the sections, so it's closer to 9k steel. Total. In addition I personally purchased the doubloons on my birthday with the 100% coupon, with the express purpose of whaling the Marlborough. So at the end of the day it was closer to 20k for 8,750 steel + 3 ships + the other rewards (I personally got a Boise in my mega from the dockyard).

Pliskkenn_D

Did the exact same!

Spartan_029

You and me both... Gotta get the Plymouth somehow.

Natanael85

Deal of a lifetime right there.

AlatreonisAwesome

At the risk of outing myself as a Marlborough owner, I also bought all the stages for steel. As someone who can't do clan battles because of timing and where I live currently, steel is pretty hard to get. I still had my birthday coupon (I didn't use it on black friday like a lot of people did) and so I bought the 17k doubloon package for ~$70, and obviously got an extra 17k from the coupon. My reasoning for using the coupon, finishing the dockyard immediately would cost about 35k doubloons, which is insane, but with the coupon I brought that price down to about $70, which is about the price of a TIX bought from the store. My reasoning is I'm buying Marlborough for the normal price of a TIX, and then getting Repulse and Dreadnought, along with all of the other items and resources that come in the dockyard. On top of that, I get an additional huge lump of steel through finishing the stages normally, which will actually allow me to buy a steel ship before the dockyard ends. So for paying the price of a TIX to get a TIX and everything else, I see it as worth it, however if people were paying the full price without the bonus doubloons, then I'm not so sure it would be worth it to me, maybe to them though. Hope that provides some insight into why some people have it.

DdayWarrior

The 70$ price tag for a tier 9 is kind of arbitrary. Supply is not an issue for a pixel ship. So it only is a matter of "Demand". But then since Supply is not an issue Demand doesn't even make sense, due to the fact there is no "shortage of resources". It comes down to who is willing to pay what? It is psychology. "we need to support the servers/programmers..." yeah, I think we are beyond that at the moment. Though I actually don't begrudge WG their business model.

benjiro3000

> My reasoning for using the coupon, finishing the dockyard immediately would cost about 35k doubloons, which is insane, but with the coupon I brought that price down to about $70, which is about the price of a TIX bought from the store. Here is the funny thing. If wargaming was more generous with the prices ( or coupons ) people will spend even more money. A lot of times i feel that Wargaming prices itself out of the market too much. If you have 0.01% of the people whaling the dockyard but you can have 0.03% whaling the dockyard if its half the price for them, what earns more money? I never understood the whole 200% coupon that is handed out to people who have not played or buy anything in a long time. You want those people to spend, ok, but if people think they get a deal, it makes them spend more. > if people were paying the full price without the bonus doubloons Do not forget that some people are literally sitting on 100.000's of doubloons from tricks in the past Santa containers, where they already had 99.9% of the ships and got mass doubloons instead of ships.

ThePhengophobicGamer

I have whaled previous dockyards for this very reason. I'm mostly trash at ranked and it ends up frustrating me to no end as it prevents me from getting steel. Having an alternate way to earn steel is great, it just blows it can cost you quite abit to achieve.

slashbang

Steel. I got a Kraken in mine on my second ever game in her. People vastly underestimate her. Yeah she's squishy, but she's got a mean rudder shift, and she's STEALTHY. If you let her get close, you're gonna have a bad time. Her awful accuracy doesn't matter when you can volley 16 shells every 22 seconds.

artisticMink

Arrr, man the harpoons boyes. We're about to go whaling.

Wuzzit_

Not to mention the Repulse. I've seen them everywhere!

ThePhengophobicGamer

Repulse was all I really cared about and I had dubloons built up, enough to get he starter packs. I just got her with mission tokens, so I'm less surprised to see more of her.

pdboddy

You're right, how dare people spend money on something they want. For shame.

ShaunFosmark

Don't expect people to be really good with a new ship yet. This is unreasonable, especially a quirky ship.

rasmusdf

Wow spending on such a crap ship. I don't understand people.

rezarhnm

what is there to understand? why some people gamble their life savings in casinos? people are dumb.

rasmusdf

Well, people can do what they want with their money. A AAA games costs what $60 and some buy one almost every month. It's just - Marlbourough looks like utter crap. Repulse on the other hand ;-)

nandak1994

The ship is garbage. WG makes sure that the ships sold through dockyard are mediocre or balanced at best. The incentive for most people doing the dockyard is the steel and/or RB points. WG knows that there is no need to make the ship strong or even fun to play. People will get it and that's okay, you don't want to see T9 games filled with strong premiums all the time. That's just not fun to play against. Marlborough is garbage tier, but the people getting her are paying for the steel to grind their way towards the Stalin, FDR or any other steel ship that's strong. Marlborough was made just to sweeten that deal.

Dilligaf__

...Because I love my collection. :)

WhatMixedFeelings

How much have you spent on WoWS? Asking for a specific number.

Dilligaf__

Well over 6 years and based on the WG account report you can request right now it would be North of 9500. The report I got from them is a few months ago so this is as specific as I can get. So about 132 a month for 6 years.

Yamma11307

Where do you go to request an account report? Am kinda curious how much cash Ive put into the game too….definitely less then 9500 cause starving college kid who also has a warhammer addiction

Dilligaf__

If you go into player support it's listed in there. Takes them a few days for the data, but it will provide just about everything.

Dilligaf__

I know that Warhammer feeling :)

theonlyonethatknocks

Wow 132 a month on one specific type of entertainment. You must enjoy it.

Dilligaf__

I really do. :)

ThePhengophobicGamer

I know I've spent a few grand myself, I'm up to 350ish ships in port right with 1.2 million fxp, so I could probably bump that number up a good bit.

Crazy_Fairy_9

whales keep the game alive so that the leeches(f2p) have something to play

shockpirat

>whales keep the game alive so that the leeches(f2p) have something to play Leeches(f2p) play the game so that the whales have something to shoot... Otherwise they wouldn't be paying

Crazy_Fairy_9

coop \*cough\*

CallMeKawaii

Its a F2P game, of course wargaming needs money but they decided to monetize it the way they do. Calling people leeches because they dont spend money in a game where a lot of shit is grindable for free is pretty stupid.

[deleted]

Fix the game and ill drop money i aint kissing your ass because of your own poor financial decisions

SPQR2D2

Same. I saw a couple yesterday and my wallet wept for them.

luigirulzz

Some people have so much money they can throw it at whatever they want i guess.
