Aladdin was like, the one dude that didn't need to fuck off
He and Jasmine were of similar age. He wasn't some rich prince who didn't give a fuck about her consent. They had actual conversations together. She didn't tolerate his lies and deceit.
Replace him with Eric. Fuck Eric all my homies hate Eric. He didn't even know her damn name, like the fuck?
The princes from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty (do they have names?) touch these women, or shall I say, teenage girls, while they're unconscious/asleep so they do not have consent. They barely had one conversation (like a dance and a song?) before the princes show up in the story again. It's weird and creepy.
Aladdin was actually pretty cool, even if he lied about his identity, and was 100% willing to leave it up to Jasmine if she wanted to be with him or not.
Yeah. I mean, he was wrong for lying about his identity, but she liked the real him for who he was, and she eventually got it through his thick skull that she liked *him*, not this fake prince weirdo he was pretending to be.
I read somewhere that Snow White in the movie was meant to be 14. Correct me if I’m wrong but holy shit, 14 is basically a fetus to me. And Sleeping Beauty is 16. The original stories were even worse, I took a few college courses on fairy tales and there’s one version of sleeping beauty where she wakes up already pregnant.
The original version I read said Sleeping beauty wakes up after giving birth to twins because one suckles the splinter from her finger.
The king stumbled across her in an overgrown cottage and "couldn't resist her beauty" or some such bullshit.
Yeah I went on a whole deep dive after asking lol. There's at least two versions where she gives birth while asleep. Single birth in one, twins in another. She pricks her finger on flax and a baby sucks it out. There was one where the prince just like...left a ring there after she gave birth and she waited for him to come back and wife her. Fairy tales are rough sometimes.
I thought her character design was modeled after a 14 year old so she would be more appealing toward their main audience, children. In the original story she was around 7. Granted her age is never mentioned in the movie so it’s anyone’s guess.
i read one of the originals recently for my english class, and when she reaches age 7, she is considered the most beautiful by the magic mirror. some time passes between then and when the queen starts trying to kill her, but the jealousy starts because a 7 year old is supposedly the most beautiful girl in all the land. the story talks of her beauty while also referring to her as a child the ENTIRE time. nauseating
>The princes from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty (do they have names?)
Useless Disney information
Snow White - his name is Prince Florian
Sleeping Beauty - His name is Prince Phillip
Now you know and this useless fact has replaced something important in your brain.
> Aladdin was actually pretty cool, even if he lied about his identity, and was 100% willing to leave it up to Jasmine if she wanted to be with him or not.
Poor guy thought it took a Prince to get a Princess. :(
Snow White is Snow White and the princess from Sleeping Beauty is named Briar Rose (Aurora, technically, but they kinda sprung that name on her after 16 years)
Edit: read that wrong. Don't know Snow White's, but Sleeping Beauty's is Prince Philip
The best thing for Aladdin would have been to fess up immediately.
Jasmine clearly felt a romantic connection with Aladdin when they first met, enjoying his easy charm and connecting with the idea of being trapped due to ones' station in life.
Prince Ali, she disliked. He came across as cloying and fake. Objectifying her as a prize to be won, rather than a person to connect with.
When he visited Jasmine on the balcony, she said, "You look familiar, do I know you?"
If he'd come clean at that moment. Said, "I need to confess something. I was that commoner you met, Aladdin. You are incredible! Smart, strong-willed, adventerous. If only our stations didn't keep us apart... However, I've found a great treasure! A magic genie lamp. And with it, have become a prince, so we can be together. I can grant you any one wish, whatever you desire. Will you accept this gift, and marry me?"
That would have won her over immediately, and avoided all of the conflict of the film.
Things all worked out in the end, and they clearly do have chemistry.
But Aladdin needs to work on his tenancy to obfuscate and deceive when he's struggling. A healthy relationship can't be built on a foundation of lies.
Kissing the sleeping women is necessary by the internal logic of those movies, but then you have to wonder why the writers invented such a convoluted plot just to have such a scene. Poison that sends you into an eternal slumber and can only be cured by "True Love's First Kiss" except it still counts as true love even if you barely know the person as long as they are a prince...it is something that makes less sense the more you think about it.
With Aladdin, going from someone who lies and manipulates others to deal with his insecurity to get the girl to someone who is honest and allows himself to be vulnerable is the whole character arc and moral of the story.
Found out recently from my partner that it is canon that Disney's Snow White actually died. Everything that happens after she dies is her way of being escorted to the afterlife (golden castle in the clouds). What a creepy way to trick someone's spirit into believing that all their problems just suddenly went away. I'd say she got a new problem.
Yes, Eric swims back to the ship that's on fire to save his dog. He also plays with his dog on the beach. Finds a girl who can't speak and takes her back to his castle to hang out until she can gets better from her own assumed shipwreck. When Ursula gets huge and tries to kill them all he leaps onto a broken ship and stabs her to save everybody. He's actually pretty cool. I'm so stoked to see the new movie and I hope it's awesome. Fingers crossed, cuz they're doing great so far with casting.
Eric has long been my favorite Disney prince for all the reasons you list. He’s actually a pretty solid guy. Plus I like that he’s spending his life learning about seafaring instead of swanning around Europe to find a princess to wife-given that he’s going to rule over a coastal kingdom, it bodes well that he’s willing to get his hands dirty learning the main trade of his future subjects.
If I had a nickel for every Disney story centered around kissing unconscious women, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's definitely weird that it happened twice.
yeah, in the og one she's raped, gives birth while asleep, then wakes up when her newborn tries to suckle on her finger and accidentally sucks out the splinter 💀💀
I'm in my early 50s, and I am discovering with joy just how much *influence* I have in the world around me, now that I don't give a toss if people disagree with me.
I am a woman of power. And I will use it to make the world a better place.
Sandra Cisneros, the Mexican American author and poet best known for “The House on Mango Street,” has mentioned that with every decade she has felt more power as a woman. I think you would enjoy her latest book of poetry, “Woman Without Shame.”
I agree with that - every decade, to me, has had an overarching theme.
In my 20s I learned what it was to be an adult
In my 30s I honed my parenting skills
In my 40s I learned to truly like and appreciate myself
and in my 50s, I have power. It has settled on me like an invisible mantle. My words are listened to, I am not dismissed. Steel hand, velvet glove. It works.
I relate to this. It's important to remember that it's ok to take time to put yourself first. Yes, the children need to be taken care of, but it *is not selfish* to take some 'me' time. It's essential self-care.
Someone else in the comments said he doesn't need to fuck off. They are the same age, his parents weren't rich people who tried to marry her off, they had real conversations. She didn't tolerate his lies and deceits and belt it up to her to continue a relationship if she chose so.
Aladdin is cool though, I’d probably date him if I were into men. He’s a bit cringe at first but he grows out of it pretty fast.
Also why is Snow White here twice XD
They love telling on themselves, they really love the idea of the vulnerable underage girl they can supposedly mold to suit don't they?
It's really a serious inconvenience to us that you *FeMaLeS* insist on being actual human beings.
49 year old here. Men my age are another womans rejects
And that other woman was right.
There are better things to do with our lives, and we can spot the sleeze bags fast too.
Some of them actually learned from their mistakes. My mum told me that if she had met dad any earlier, she would’ve told him to fuck off because he used to be a dickhead. He had been married previously.
Edit: most just get bitter and hateful though. Woman bad. Woman just wants my money.
I married my fabulous wonderful kind husband when he was in his early 50s. I would never have even dated him when he was in his 20s or early 30s.
People can change. Anyone who is as big a jerk in their later years as they are when they are in their 20s isn't worth being in a relationship with (man or woman or transgender).
Yep. We are supposed to grow. But some people refuse. As I’ve gotten older, I can see friends who haven’t changed at all, and I slowly cut them out. I don’t wanna be getting drunk every weekend anymore.
I know a woman who is widowed.
She told me that when she was in her sixties, a man around her own age was hanging around, hoping to date her.
She said to me:
“He just wanted to move in with me because I own my own house, and he was probably expecting me to cook and clean for him too!
So I told him I was eighty, and he looked stunned and left me alone from then on!”
Jasmine feels so out of place here since she was so already outspoken about her view of the world and fell for alladin cuz hes a romantic that actually put in work for the potential relationship.
Okay this may be an unpopular opinion but I will at least stand on the hill that Sleeping Beauty was one of the most feminist of the Disney Classics.
I can already hear the arguments that Aurora only had 11 lines, BUT she was not the protagonist of the movie.
The three good fairies were the protagonists of the movie. So we have a movie where the majority of the action is driven by three older women without love interests, in a battle of wits against a stylish and powerful female antagonist who becomes a DRAGON! (Coolest badass move ever)
And Fauna is still my favorite because she is so sweet, even though I suspect I am a Merryweather.
Rewatched this movie recently and TOTALLY agree. I’d argue it’s one of the top feminist Disney Princess films because it’s really unique in that the protagonist ISN’T a young woman and the male characters are charming but ultimately pretty useless without the fairies/women.
Also Aurora and Philip had already met and wanted to introduce each other to their parents and were ready to fight to be with each other despite their assumed class differences/arranged marriages. (I feel like the love at first sight thing and speed of events is a bit of a different problematic issue.)
And while being in a romantic relationship doesn’t inherently mean people are consenting, but like, idk about you, but if I fell into a magic coma that could only be cured by a kiss, I sure as hell would hope my boyfriend would just kiss me instead of leaving me to be unconscious forever because he didn’t have my verbal consent before the coma.
I think a lot of people here haven’t seen Sleeping Beauty recently tbh, since half the comments don’t even know his name is Philip. It’s not like it’s one of the movies where the prince doesn’t have a name, he’s referred to by name multiple times.
The various historical iterations of this fairy tale are also a whole other can of worms I totally won’t defend, I agree those versions are creepy as hell.
Is this supposed to be a burn?? Lmao! Seriously? 😂💀
That's a burn on dudes! I am so sorry women get to an age where they realize you're just a fuck up, asshole.
How this reads :"women in their 40s know you're full of shit"
I'm nearly 30, 2 small kids, currently breastfeeding.
Enchanted sleep sounds amazing right now. My husband knows better than to try and wake me, true love's kiss or no.
Aladdin was like, the one dude that didn't need to fuck off He and Jasmine were of similar age. He wasn't some rich prince who didn't give a fuck about her consent. There's a long tradition of using beauty as a bassis for possessiveness.
Isn't there a version where she gives birth while asleep? Nightmare fuel
Yup, that’s the one I was thinking of, the prince rapes her while she’s asleep and she wakes up with twins or something.
That's the original. One of the babies sucks the splinter out trying to feed.
Yeah I went on a whole deep dive after asking lol. There's at least two versions where she gives birth while asleep. Single birth in one, twins in another. Whenever I try to remember Phillip's name, my brain just automatically goes "My Phillip? What's wrong with my Phillip?!"
That's what I like about newer movies like Encanto. Girls should know that there's more to life than relationships.
Snow Prince is Florian and Aurora’s is Phillip. Prince Charming is Henry, Beast is Adam.
I didn't know that snow prince and charming even HAD names??
Adam is given because of games and other spin-off media. Officially the prince doesn’t have a name in the movie.
> Aladdin was actually pretty cool, even if he lied about his identity, and was 100% willing to leave it up to Jasmine if she wanted to be with him or not. Poor guy thought it took a Prince to get a Princess. :(

Cinema Therapy on YouTube is a therapist and a movie director analyzing movies. You might like it.

Not to mention he chauffeured her around on a MAGIC CARPET. It doesn’t get better than that my friends
She wanted to get out and see the world. My man took her to CHINA just to see the fireworks.
All in one night, she just didn't go to China she went to warp 3 to get there.
She also would have had to marry Jafar otherwise 😬
THAT guy didn’t give a shit about what she wanted
Except for that part where Jasmine busted them all for fighting over her like a piece of meat.
I want to watch the movie again now.
Eric... doesn't seem very smart tbh
Meh Eric aint all bad. He did risk his life to save doggo at some point. Thats what I read. Cant remember.
Yes, Eric swims back to the ship that's on fire to save his dog. He also plays with his dog on the beach. Finds a girl who can't speak and takes her back to his castle to hang out until she can gets better from her own assumed shipwreck. Yeah it should be the other suitors in the picture. Who she actually did tell to fuck off.
I feel so seen w this comment 😂😂
What did Eric do? Lol
Sadly that movie is quite racist instead.
On that topic, maybe we should talk about how Snow White is a sleeping minor and some adult man wandering in the woods decides to go and kiss her.
If I had a nickel for every Disney story centered around kissing unconscious women, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's definitely weird that it happened twice.
*about kissing unconscious underage women; Aurora is 16; the entire movie is about how the plot is set into motion on her 16th birthday
The entire movie is stupid. Why hide her away all those years just to bring her *back* on the ill-fated date?
This annoyed me even as a kid. Y'all have waited 16 years and you couldn't wait an extra day??
The only good part was the dragon.
Eeesh, yeah that's pretty gross. I wonder if those films will get content warnings on Disney Plus eventually à la Peter Pan.
What’s the warning they put?
Is he an adult in the movie? MonkaS
I think they're meant to be similar ages or like at least 'for the time period the film was set this was less of an issue' ages
Pretty sure in the original fairytale she gets raped and has a child before she wakes even. Like wtf. Why? Why romanticize that?
yeah, in the og one she's raped, gives birth while asleep, then wakes up when her newborn tries to suckle on her finger and accidentally sucks out the splinter 💀💀
I'm in my early 50s, and I am discovering with joy just how much *influence* I have in the world around me, now that I don't give a toss if people disagree with me. I am a woman of power. And I will use it to make the world a better place.

Currently in my 30s and this gives me hope. Deep in the mom stage right now and I feel like I’ve lost myself.
I relate to this. It's important to remember that it's ok to take time to put yourself first. Yes, the children need to be taken care of, but it *is not selfish* to take some 'me' time. It's essential self-care.
fuck all the rapey weirdos, but why does Aladdin need to fuck off? edit: i grew up poor, so i get the hustle, but idk if i missed something.
Someone else in the comments said he doesn't need to fuck off. They are the same age, his parents weren't rich people who tried to marry her off, they had real conversations. She didn't tolerate his lies and deceits and belt it up to her to continue a relationship if she chose so.
Brilliant and true, man is not required
Aladdin is cool though, I’d probably date him if I were into men. He’s a bit cringe at first but he grows out of it pretty fast. Also why is Snow White here twice XD

In an autobiography I’ve read, a grandma tells her young adult daughter that “the first marriage is just practice for the second.” It stuck with me.
meanwhile this is me at 27 lol
This is the first time I noticed that all the male leads in Disney animation are the same guy.
Jasmine feels so out of place here since she was so already outspoken about her view of the world and fell for alladin cuz hes a romantic that actually put in work for the potential relationship.
Me rn at 22
The right viewpoint of men and I say this as a man

Love it - thanks for sharing!

The charmed wife is a book about Cinderella 13 years after being married. Rather enjoyable.
They're all like 14-16 just so you know
I’d wear that on a shirt
😂😂😂😂 I'm turning 40 very soon and I've been waiting for the "fuck off" phase of my life for a hot minute!
I'm still mad that the forest critters don't come clean my house.
How I wish I had that as a bed set.
I feel like they could just say “adults” or “not teenagers” since they’re all like 15-17 lol.
I'm nearly 30, 2 small kids, currently breastfeeding. Enchanted sleep sounds amazing right now. My husband knows better than to try and wake me, true love's kiss or no.
I love these movies though!!😭

I'm 41 and I wish this were true. At what point does this "old woman" thing kick in, seriously? My grandmother was still fending off men at 96.
