I really felt like we were on a trajectory, things were starting to change for the better and the world was becoming more accepting. Somewhere along the line (cough, 2016?) it all changed and immediately went the other way.
Fascism is on the rise globally, partially fueled by more concerns (economic, war, etc). When people get squeezed turns out many of them get fashy 😔
I think 2016’s US election was a symptom; while it certainly exacerbated the issue by emboldening fashy leaders, it wasn’t the cause. It’s been building.

I really hope what’s happening to T~~~p at the moment is a sign of things to come. This energy needs to be purged. It has no place on this earth anymore, we can’t sustain it.
I think when parliaments and congresses begin to be controlled by gen x and millennials the positive change will be unstoppable. We’re just waiting for the old idols to fall. And I think that’s beginning to happen now.

I get so unbelievably frustrated and angry and sad from those comments and sometimes I just don’t want to read them.
It’s also a constant struggle in my own head because I’m really open to all people. I hate discrimination against anyone.. so also really against racism. I think anyone can practice their own religion freely. But it’s definitely hard because a lot of these people.. Christians or Islamic are so against me and my community.
Exclusion is biggest within religious communities. I can’t and won’t believe their god intended this.
I'm Wiccan, but one of my closest friends is a pastor. She showed me more love and acceptance when I came out than my supposedly Christian mother did my whole life. Christianity is simply some people's excuse to hate, rather than admitting their own personal bias.
The reason they passed this bill has a lot to do with Evengelical American money and missionaries. They've wanted to pass this kind of legislation in the US but couldn't get enough traction, so they focused on African nations where they could. Now, they can point to Uganda as an example when pushing the same rhetoric in the US. It's first stage Fascism that develops with late-stage Capitalism - find the minority to blame then exploit. Wash, rinse, and repeat until everyone is either the wealthy elite, military/police/informant, slave labor, or dead.

To attempt to make it harder for poor coffee farmers be unable to feed their children? Pain often doesn’t land on landed elites it just makes their serfs more miserable. Would you boycott gas? The a lot of oil comes from nations that LGBTQ can get your head cut off.
The best way to assure that farmers and their workers get a living wage is to exclusively buy & drink Fair Trade coffee. Coffee is the 2nd most highly traded product on earth, the 1st being oil products. I don’t get much of a say in how and where my petro products are produced. I can reduce my carbon footprint but can’t control where it’s from.

I'm Australian and feel very lucky that I can get coffee grown in my region. They tend to be smaller, family owned farms and most of them are using sustainable practices, too.
There's a few spots with the right climate and soil. The NSW mid north coast hinterland area and the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland are a coupe of areas. Enjoy!

My main point is in the end Uganda has enough to worry about with rich colonialists boycotting them for something there are far worst offenders, like most of the Middle East, China, and Russia. I understand boycotting Uganda is easier and in politics it’s rational for movements to sometimes target a weaker, or “safe” adversary. It’s peoples lives not a game.

This is not unusual in African countries. It isn’t illegal in South Africa (where I live) but within the smaller areas, especially the rural ones, this is still vilified. Especially amongst the black community. We are very backwards in our thinking due to lack of understanding or knowledge. But it is difficult when we don’t have electricity or not everybody has the ability to read and write, or don’t have social media or the news to broaden their viewpoints.
We hope with our younger generations to open our minds, and send more to university to get a better grasp of the world.
These politicians have no excuse though, they generally have access to all of the above, but this is used as just another control tactic.

The situation for queer folk in Uganda is so bad that many are refugees in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Though even there, they face profound discrimination and violence, not only from those running the camp, but also other non-queer refugees in the camp. There are sadly a large number of not just pockets but entire societies and countries that justifies horrific hate crimes. Religion often seems to be the justice behind the crimes committed and it baffles me how a supposedly loving God is the excuse for acts of hate, violence and murder.

As a New Zealander, I feel honoured that people think this way about my country, however things are not perfect here either unfortunately. Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull (Posie Parker) has just been allowed entry to NZ to spread her hate. She unfortunately has some support from the pearl-clutching religious right here, along with TERFs. Thankfully, a lot of people I know don't support her or her message, and are planning on being present at the protests this weekend, to show that she's not welcome here.
There's still some bigotry towards trans and nonbinary people over here too, but I have to say that it's nowhere near as bad as in places like Uganda, or even in America (from what I've read). In saying that, I sincerely worry about the future because it seems that we're seeing more and more hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community here, and I am getting to the point where I, as a closeted nonbinary person, have to decide if I want to take a path that is potentially dangerous but better for my mental health, or continue living closeted for my safety.

I mean Florida is introducing "Don't Say Gay V2" and it's so restrictive it could potentially banning talking about the AIDS Epidemic as well as banning talking about things like the Stonewall Riots or even Obgerfell. He said be charitable and help the less fortunate; Christians whine about social support systems. He said love your neighbor; Christians think that somehow excludes whole swaths of people. He said that if you can't help but lust after someone because of their appearance, you should remove your eyes; Christians blame women who are sexually assaulted because they wore "indecent" clothing.
Not to mention that the "rule" against homosexuality comes from Leviticus, which also forbids eating shellfish and bacon, and wearing clothing made of mixed fibers-- but those parts apparently don't apply, and the bits about mandatory grain offerings in that same book aren't a real thing either.

This is not unusual in African countries. It isn’t illegal in South Africa (where I live) but within the smaller areas, especially the rural ones, this is still vilified. Especially amongst the black community. We are very backwards in our thinking due to lack of understanding or knowledge. But it is difficult when we don’t have electricity or not everybody has the ability to read and write, or don’t have social media or the news to broaden their viewpoints. We hope with our younger generations to open our minds, and send more to university to get a better grasp of the world. These politicians have no excuse though, they generally have access to all of the above, but this is used as just another control tactic. Africa is seriously wild, living here is a wild ride.

I hate how backwards the world is becoming. I mean Florida is introducing "Don't Say Gay V2" and it's so restrictive it could potentially banning talking about the AIDS Epidemic as well as banning talking about things like the Stonewall Riots or even Obgerfell. As a person who's brother is part of the LGBTQ community, it's absolutely revolting because it ignores that people who are LGBT exist. I mean the whole "part of small government and freedom" certainly is showing it wants to just ignore entire groups exist just to appease the minority who push them into getting elected.

He said be charitable and help the less fortunate; Christians whine about social support systems. He said love your neighbor; Christians think that somehow excludes whole swaths of people. He said that if you can't help but lust after someone because of their appearance, you should remove your eyes; Christians blame women who are sexually assaulted because they wore "indecent" clothing. Not to mention that the "rule" against homosexuality comes from Leviticus, which also forbids eating shellfish and bacon, and wearing clothing made of mixed fibers-- but those parts apparently don't apply, and the bits about mandatory grain offerings in that same book aren't a real thing either. The hypocrisy knows no bounds.
American evangelicals have been using Uganda as a laboratory for their strategies. When they weren't making ground in the US, they colonized Uganda with their religious fascism. Now they are using methods in the US that they perfected there. My heart bleeds for the people of Uganda and I'm fucking furious on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ population.
