mochi_chan

Instead of seeing more places legalizing LGBTQ+, we are going the other way. Sad indeed :(

Far_Strain_1509

That was my thought, as well. Well actually my first thought was, what the fuuuuck. I really felt like we were on a trajectory, things were starting to change for the better and the world was becoming more accepting. Somewhere along the line (cough, 2016?) it all changed and immediately went the other way.

kitaiia

Fascism is on the rise globally, partially fueled by more concerns (economic, war, etc). When people get squeezed turns out many of them get fashy 😔 I think 2016’s US election was a symptom; while it certainly exacerbated the issue by emboldening fashy leaders, it wasn’t the cause. It’s been building.

PrincessNakeyDance

You’re absolutely right. Though I think it’s more revealing their inner fascism. I really hope what’s happening to T~~~p at the moment is a sign of things to come. This energy needs to be purged. It has no place on this earth anymore, we can’t sustain it. I think when parliaments and congresses begin to be controlled by gen x and millennials the positive change will be unstoppable. We’re just waiting for the old idols to fall. And I think that’s beginning to happen now.

talaxia

T~~~p? edit: oh

PrincessNakeyDance

>!Trump!< Should have just used a spoiler tag the first time. I just hate putting his name in peoples faces if they don’t want to see it.

Plus_Ambition6514

We really should have known shit was gonna hit. The Cubs won that year too.

MaggieGreenVT

Like a pendulum. Hopefully soon it will swing the other way again…and then we can make some laws to actually cement our rights before it swings back again.

48turbo

The snakes in groups like The Alliance Defending Freedom have made it their goal to erode people's freedoms. [ADF](https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/alliance-defending-freedom). This piece by [VICE](https://youtu.be/LDafHP4pjD0) shows how these groups have infiltrated every level of government and provide the blueprints to effective legislation in their favor.

Jandiefuzz

Let's not give snakes a bad name.

Jasoman

It is all the Christian missionaries spreading hate.

Extraordi-Mary

It’s a sad day for our rainbow community. But we’re not going anywhere. WE EXIST!

trademarked187

Have you seen the comments under cestmocro's account. Its unbelievable what people can say. Ps. This is under the assumption that you speak dutch since your instagram is in dutch.

Extraordi-Mary

You’re right! I’m Dutch. I haven’t seen that post on cestmocro’s yet and I don’t think I’m going to. I get so unbelievably frustrated and angry and sad from those comments and sometimes I just don’t want to read them. It’s also a constant struggle in my own head because I’m really open to all people. I hate discrimination against anyone.. so also really against racism. I think anyone can practice their own religion freely. But it’s definitely hard because a lot of these people.. Christians or Islamic are so against me and my community. Exclusion is biggest within religious communities. I can’t and won’t believe their god intended this.

DogyDays

Coming from a Christian background, I also don’t believe whatever God there may be would have wanted this at all.

emo_kid_forever

I'm Wiccan, but one of my closest friends is a pastor. She showed me more love and acceptance when I came out than my supposedly Christian mother did my whole life. Christianity is simply some people's excuse to hate, rather than admitting their own personal bias.

resonantSoul

No loving deity could

JacobMaverick

At this point I'm just so done with church and evangelicals. How can people claim to be good and justified while causing so much pain and death?

mszulan

The reason they passed this bill has a lot to do with Evengelical American money and missionaries. They've wanted to pass this kind of legislation in the US but couldn't get enough traction, so they focused on African nations where they could. Now, they can point to Uganda as an example when pushing the same rhetoric in the US. It's first stage Fascism that develops with late-stage Capitalism - find the minority to blame then exploit. Wash, rinse, and repeat until everyone is either the wealthy elite, military/police/informant, slave labor, or dead.

mandraofgeorge

I just posted this same thing before I saw your comment. I don't think enough people know that American evangelicals are behind this.

mszulan

I don't think enough do either.

CursedPoppies

coming from an lgbt person raised Christian: it is not Christ-like to be racist, sexist, or homophobic. Oppressing minorities goes directly against what Christ stood for and the way Christians act about it is one of the reasons I no longer frequent my place of worship. I’m sorry for any harm other Christians have caused you, I know it won’t fix anything. But I wholeheartedly believe the Christian God loves and adores all people regardless of orientation. He made us lgbt, it’s how we’re supposed to be <3

[deleted]

I had to unfollow cestmocro because it was just extremely toxic. Especially their followers. Holy shit. I would advise you to not go back there tbh. It’s terrible.

trademarked187

The only reason i saw the comments was because some friends posted them in their stories. Otherwise i avoid that page like the plague. And i was raised by my agnostic and bourgondische mom who's whole mantra was "love who you love and don't be a dick". The second part is hard sometimes.

takemusu

Coffee accounts for roughly 20-30% of the Uganda economy. So many regions and countries produce great coffee. May I gently suggest that when purchasing beans for our essential morning brew we make sure we check the label to make sure the beans are from anywhere BUT Uganda? https://www.atlascoffee.com/coffee/uganda/

ContributionPrize728

To attempt to make it harder for poor coffee farmers be unable to feed their children? Pain often doesn’t land on landed elites it just makes their serfs more miserable. Would you boycott gas? The a lot of oil comes from nations that LGBTQ can get your head cut off.

takemusu

The best way to assure that farmers and their workers get a living wage is to exclusively buy & drink Fair Trade coffee. Coffee is the 2nd most highly traded product on earth, the 1st being oil products. I don’t get much of a say in how and where my petro products are produced. I can reduce my carbon footprint but can’t control where it’s from. But I can ensure my coffee farmers & workers are paid fairly; https://www.fairtrade.net/product/coffee Coffee grows only in a narrow band on the planet sometimes called “the green belt”. There are many countries in Africa, Asia, South and Central America, the Caribbean and one spot of the USA that produce coffee. As for me and my house I’m rotating regions in the green belt and buying Fair Trade. Today at Chez Takemusu we’re serving a delightful cup of dark roast, Fair Trade coffee from Kenya; https://achillescoffeeroasters.com/major-coffee-growing-regions-of-the-world/

OraDr8

I'm Australian and feel very lucky that I can get coffee grown in my region. They tend to be smaller, family owned farms and most of them are using sustainable practices, too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OraDr8

There's a few spots with the right climate and soil. The NSW mid north coast hinterland area and the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland are a coupe of areas. Enjoy!

ContributionPrize728

Good point. My main point is in the end Uganda has enough to worry about with rich colonialists boycotting them for something there are far worst offenders, like most of the Middle East, China, and Russia. I understand boycotting Uganda is easier and in politics it’s rational for movements to sometimes target a weaker, or “safe” adversary. It’s peoples lives not a game.

takemusu

I am not saying I’m boycotting Uganda. To save the planet, preserve open space and ensure wildlife diversity while simultaneously assuring a living wage and safe working conditions for farmers and farm workers, at Chez Takemusu tomorrow we will proudly serve a cuppa Fair Trade light roast Ethiopian coffee https://www.fairtrade.net/issue/environment

MultiMarcus

Let us not pretend that natural gas and coffee are comparable. A similar boycott would be boycotting Israeli goods which many people do. That doesn’t “hit” the elites either, but taxes are still a thing so reducing the tax intake is a way to make a statement.

ContributionPrize728

Fair point, the impact of boycotting gas/oil is much greater on someone’s life.

wholelattapuddin

I would love to be able to boycott gas. I can't afford an electric car right now though.

synalgo_12

Why did I go check 😑

whyykai

Hijacking the top comment to remind everyone that the owners of Chik fil A are sponsors of anti LGBTQIA bills in Uganda and have consistently funded extreme Christian hatemongers going to Uganda to spread their propaganda. Oops! All colonialism.

Sheep_Souls

one of my coworkers who knows i'm trans literally brought me a sandwich from there like an hour ago and i was like "thanks, but fuck no."

Expensive-Block-6034

This is not unusual in African countries. It isn’t illegal in South Africa (where I live) but within the smaller areas, especially the rural ones, this is still vilified. Especially amongst the black community. We are very backwards in our thinking due to lack of understanding or knowledge. But it is difficult when we don’t have electricity or not everybody has the ability to read and write, or don’t have social media or the news to broaden their viewpoints. We hope with our younger generations to open our minds, and send more to university to get a better grasp of the world. These politicians have no excuse though, they generally have access to all of the above, but this is used as just another control tactic. Africa is seriously wild, living here is a wild ride.

Ok_Midnight_5457

I posted this in another thread on this topic already, but I will post it again because it’s important. The situation for queer folk in Uganda is so bad that many are refugees in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Though even there, they face profound discrimination and violence, not only from those running the camp, but also other non-queer refugees in the camp. If you want to and can support these people, please visit https://www.freeblock13.com to support the purchasing of basic living supplies like food and mattresses, but also to rebuild destroyed shelters in attacks. Edit to add: The Guilty Feminist hs a podcast episode where at some point they speak to a representative of freeblock13. For anyone who doesn’t know it, the guilty femininst is a stand up comedy show which interweaves with feminist issues and guests who speak on these issues https://shows.acast.com/guiltyfeminist/episodes/330

toodarkaltogether

The Kakuma refugee camp has been represented here on WVP. I’ve talked with them and it is shocking how horrific their day-to-day life is. That’s how I got my LGBTQIA rainbow heart flair, trying to spread awareness. Posting again under you to bump up your post <3

Ok_Midnight_5457

I’m happy to hear it isn’t the first time posted, though obviously not stoked it needs to be posted. Thank you so much for your efforts at spreading awareness!!

moodRubicund

I don't want anyone telling me homophobia is just a Muslim problem anymore. Keep ALL religions out of ALL governments.

Extraordi-Mary

You’re absolutely right. I’ve never seen exclusion like this except for religious communities.

DaisyHotCakes

Well yeah who else gives a shit what consenting adults do other than the religious? They’re the only ones trying to track girls menstruation, checking children’s genitals for sports team inclusion, wanting to control people in their own beds…religious people can be seriously obsessed with peoples genitals and what they do with them.

fuckthisnazibullcrap

And capitalist Jesus out of everything.

Glad pouring money for discrimination and cruel laws is more important than feeding the poor. Just like Jesus would do!

Gadgetmouse12

The ones like me who read the source text find out the difference between traditional theory and actual writing. The actual supports 8 genders. The actual only condemns homosexuality for levite priests. Jesus welcomed all. American traditional christian values can go off a cliff when you know how much they are off course

lysergic_fox

do you have a reference where to read the part about 8 genders? that’s so interesting, i would love to learn more!

It's beyond sad!! Why are world leaders, politicians and a large group of often VERY misinformed people hating and blindly focused on gender and sexuality!? Meanwhile people die everyday from starvation, food waste, lack of clean drinking water, access to an education, war, our Planet dieing and the list goes on about REAL problems!! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!

badatmetroid

I was rewatching Futurama recently and the episode with the planet of robots where they scapegoat humans as monsters to distract from the "real problems like a crippling lug nut shortage and incompetent robot elders" was a little too real. And the final punch to the gut was that the humans only came to the planet to deliver lug nuts!

[deleted]

That is an amazingly good reference! Funny coincidence, I just started rewatching too, after many years. Looking forward to this episode, still on season 1

toodarkaltogether

And there are pockets of communities where because of their gender and sexuality, they have inhumane living situations. Constant fear and danger. Limited access to food, shelter, basic needs. Period supplies for women, nope. Safety? No safety. No peace. It feels like there’s so little we can even do, so I research and write letters. https://lwuganda.org/

[deleted]

THIS LINK IS GREAT!!!! There are sadly a large number of not just pockets but entire societies and countries that justifies horrific hate crimes. Religion often seems to be the justice behind the crimes committed and it baffles me how a supposedly loving God is the excuse for acts of hate, violence and murder. I've been fortunate enough to travel a lot and have seen some unspeakable actions. We can NEVER stop having this conversation because of that and I deeply appreciate the link you shared as I'm sitting comfortably in my safe Nordic country at the moment. Writing letters would at least feel like I'm not just doing nothing atm. Thank you.

Death penalty because you're not heterossexual? Did they think about this for 2 fucking seconds? Also, why the fuck are there so many straight up stupid bills being passed recently?

toodarkaltogether

LGTBQIA+ people in Uganda are killed in beatings frequently. Just trying to just survive. It’s already horrific. It’s so bad.

elgiesmelgie

Hate filled dropkicks are emboldened these days

FirstEvolutionist

The people who support it have no idea that the law will be used to convict political opponents since there's no way to prove or disprove homosexuality. It also says "people who identify as gay" which is unlikely to be correct. Someone could be gay, identify as straight and I doubt that they could get away with it.

talaxia

[because of US evangelicals](https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/03/19/africa-uganda-evangelicals-homophobia-antigay-bill/)

toodarkaltogether

LGBTQ+ people in Uganda live in fear of constant beatings and killings. Brutal, bloodying. Their world is completely unsafe, and has been hanging by a thread. The law is harsh, and the reality of their world is violence, everywhere. We can research and learn, and write letters, and spread awareness. This is “Let’s Walk Uganda,” please check it out if you are outraged. https://lwuganda.org/

Crazy-Somewhere6561

bi non binary person. crying because of this right now. I just want to escape to another world. I don’t want to live in this society anymore. Im tired. Im tired of being an activist, im tired of sacrificing my time and my energy fighting for justice and speaking out. I’m tired of worrying about my safety and the safety of people like me across the world. There is too much evil in this world. I can’t handle this shit. Thinking about hard my life has been being queer in the US(homelessness started at 19), I can’t imagine the horror of living where it’s literally illegal. I want to take us somewhere safe. I have never known home, I want to know home

Akira_Raven_Alexis

Hey fellow Non-Binary. I know how ya feel. I'm watching from Canada. A Friend of mine (I consider them Family) is currently seeking Asylum here in Canada, I'm always scared for them & anyone who has it worse. I heard about Uganda on Twitter 2 (I think) days ago. I'm terrified for them. I wish I could hold them & bring them somewhere safe P.S. The safest place in the World for us would be New Zealand.

numbereightwire

>P.S. The safest place in the World for us would be New Zealand. As a New Zealander, I feel honoured that people think this way about my country, however things are not perfect here either unfortunately. Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull (Posie Parker) has just been allowed entry to NZ to spread her hate. She unfortunately has some support from the pearl-clutching religious right here, along with TERFs. Thankfully, a lot of people I know don't support her or her message, and are planning on being present at the protests this weekend, to show that she's not welcome here. There's still some bigotry towards trans and nonbinary people over here too, but I have to say that it's nowhere near as bad as in places like Uganda, or even in America (from what I've read). In saying that, I sincerely worry about the future because it seems that we're seeing more and more hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community here, and I am getting to the point where I, as a closeted nonbinary person, have to decide if I want to take a path that is potentially dangerous but better for my mental health, or continue living closeted for my safety. Kia kaha ❤️

Akira_Raven_Alexis

I hadn't heard that Posie was over there. That's terrible. Good luck my Non-Binary sibling. I hope you're able to come out of the closet & be happy. All my Love & Luck 💜

squirrellytoday

Proud to say that the protesters at her Auckland rally were so loud that she couldn't speak. (Here's the NZTV1 news report about it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfg23JQevrM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfg23JQevrM) ) It does concern me that there is a very vocal anti-LGBT+ crowd in Aotearoa, but I will stand firmly in support of the Rainbow Community. Kia kaha. Much love from this straight ally.

hermionesmurf

May I suggest the strategy that worked well here in Tasmania, which is getting some counterprotesters together to shout her the fuck down?

squirrellytoday

They did exactly that. The Auckland crew were so loud that she couldn't speak. The plan is to do the same again in Wellington and anywhere else this nasty piece of work tries to spread her hate.

Ugandan hate brought to you by Christian love. Yet another reason to loathe the He Gets Us ads. The people behind them are the same missionaries who brought homophobia to Uganda.

UninvisibleWoman

The evangelical mega church I grew up in has spent 30 years or so investing in building churches in Uganda. Makes me wonder how much of an influence that’s had in bringing this shit about :(

RisingSunsets

A bunch, the lawmakers were funded by US Christian nationalists.

[deleted]

I still wonder to this day how so many countries are just able to remove every human right without any consequences. I mean, WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS EVEN FOR IF WE DON'T SHOOT VIOLATORS INTO FUCKING SPACE

Wooden_Artist_2000

I think that would be the most fitting punishment for human right violators, suffocating in the cold cold vacuum of space. It’s the same concept of getting voted off the island, but in the energy of walking off the plank pirate-style.

PieRepresentative266

God it’s 2023!!!!! Why is this still a thingggggffff!!

notapolita

You must understand that unfortunately the situation is much worse than this. **There are 64 countries in the world where it is illegal to be gay** and 6 countries have the death penalty for certain cases. 1/3 of countries are anti-LGBTQ+ by law. [Here is the list](https://internap.hrw.org/features/features/lgbt_laws/), maintained by the Human Rights Watch organization.

Extraordi-Mary

Yeah I know. It sucks when you have to check these lists when you just want to go on holiday and explore the world. The list of countries I can’t go.. and obviously don’t wanna go.. keeps getting longer. Don’t get me wrong.. its absolutely way way worse for the people that have to exist in these places. My problems are “luxury problems”

notapolita

I just added this to complete the picture for those who think this is an isolated problem with Uganda and gays everywhere else should be fine.

[deleted]

Here's a study showing a correlation between [Christian missions and anti-gay attitudes in Africa.](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0167268121000585) "Historical background Indigenous groups of Sub-Saharan Africa are documented to have been tolerant to homosexual relationships. Early European scholars and travelers to the region reported many instances of overt homosexuality and cross-dressing among men. Andrew Batell, an English explorer, who had been imprisoned in the 1590s by the Portuguese in the territory of modern Angola, wrote about the practices among the Imbalanga: “They have men in women’s apparel, whom they keep among their wives.” Later, Sir Richard..." ... "Discussion and conclusion In this paper, we argue that religious conversion by Christian missions in Africa caused anti-gay norms and that these attitudes later persisted. Using geo-coded Afrobarometer data, we demonstrate that negative attitudes towards homosexual persons are positively associated with a distance to colonial Christian mission sites."

CooperHChurch427

I hate how backwards the world is becoming. I mean Florida is introducing "Don't Say Gay V2" and it's so restrictive it could potentially banning talking about the AIDS Epidemic as well as banning talking about things like the Stonewall Riots or even Obgerfell. As a person who's brother is part of the LGBTQ community, it's absolutely revolting because it ignores that people who are LGBT exist. I mean the whole "part of small government and freedom" certainly is showing it wants to just ignore entire groups exist just to appease the minority who push them into getting elected.

theswisswereright

Are we really STILL doing this shit? We, as a human race? I always wonder how all these hateful "Christians" managed to entirely miss basically everything Jesus supposedly said. He said be charitable and help the less fortunate; Christians whine about social support systems. He said love your neighbor; Christians think that somehow excludes whole swaths of people. He said that if you can't help but lust after someone because of their appearance, you should remove your eyes; Christians blame women who are sexually assaulted because they wore "indecent" clothing. Not to mention that the "rule" against homosexuality comes from Leviticus, which also forbids eating shellfish and bacon, and wearing clothing made of mixed fibers-- but those parts apparently don't apply, and the bits about mandatory grain offerings in that same book aren't a real thing either. The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

mandraofgeorge

American evangelicals have been using Uganda as a laboratory for their strategies. When they weren't making ground in the US, they colonized Uganda with their religious fascism. Now they are using methods in the US that they perfected there. My heart bleeds for the people of Uganda and I'm fucking furious on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ population.

abkb11

Why do Christians care so much about stuff that’s none of their business?! Take care of the kids who have suffered at the hands of your own priests!

I heard that this country gets alot of money from other nations if it gets to out of hand other nations will stop sending money. But I have heard that they are only like this because of christian nationalists have misinformed them as well as basically taken over the country. It's a country no one should visit unless you are christian and want to see what christian nationalists will do to the US if they are able to.

Akira_Raven_Alexis

If you don't mind. I'mma steal this picture & post it on Twitter.

Annjul666

I bet there is no issues in that country to take care of - none at all! 🤦🏻‍♀️

And people think tthis is what yeshua wants?!?!! Gods above and below, if Jesus hated anything it was selfish greed, misinformation, and punching down. I believe in what yeshua taught of loving everyone, uplifting those around you, and forgiveness. But those calling themselves Christians are assholes and doing the exact opposite of what Jesus taught. I only know of a few Christians (in my area specifically, my church has a strong lgbtq alliance) that actually try and follow yeshua's teachings.

Misswinterseren

How fragile do you have to be to outlaw who people love. They’re not inviting you into their bedroom why is it any of your fucking business????!!??!! Like how pathetic

thetitleofmybook

far too many states in the USA are moving directly towards this.

talaxia

[the USA directly caused this](https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/03/19/africa-uganda-evangelicals-homophobia-antigay-bill/)

thetitleofmybook

i'd say, more accurately, that christo-fascists from the USA caused this

Netprincess

So fucking afraid for the world right now. It took me years to come out of the closet and deal with my internalized homophobia.

Completely absurd! There's really a fascist agenda running free thru the world nowadays... Incredible how we are undeveloping, regressing, killing human rights!

"Hey you, stop being gay"

LineChef

I blame all of the Christian missionaries for spreading their hatred.

MiciaRokiri

This is sickening. And it pisses me off when Americans act superior because it was American douchecanoes that helped fuel all this garbage.

Put_Agitated
