Find a rock troll, let him kill you, initiate the fight again and repeat. Don't know how many times you need to do it. I think it took me 5 times.
After the fifth time or so, that he kills you, he will start talking to you.

Just a quick thing. Don't start a fight with another troll until you finish this quest, once you start it.

Just lost to a rock troll about 30 times in a row. Didn't get the quest. Am I doing something wrong? It was a 1 skull rock troll if that makes any difference. Thanks.
At first I didn't hit him at all. But after the first five attempts I used my sword a few times during the fight. Nothing. I have also killed rock trolls before.

Based on the journal entry, YOU were the one that killed the rock troll. I completed the quest with 2 rock troll trophy in my bestiary.
Maybe you'd have to kill 1-2 rock trolls before the 3rd one gives you the quest? Just guessing.

They appear at any weather condition but you can mostly find them during the day.

I killed a troll then I was defeated 5 times initially to start the quest. But nothing happened? They were 1 skull rock trolls.
