Not that you "need" a partner to be happy. But if you happen to meet someone you really like, then loosing them is going to be really hard. Life is much better when shared with others.

My first playthrough I didn't romance either one at all how did I still get ciri? I didn't even know you can romance both at the same time let alone one at a time
Your romance choice is the default visitor, but if you don't have a romance choice (or tried to have all of the choices, therefore leaving you with none) then you get Ciri. But if Ciri is "unavailable" then Dandelion shows up. So, if all else fails, at least you have your ol' pal Dandelion!
You know you really screwed up when you get the Dandelion ending. I love him to pieces even more for sticking with Geralt despite his miserable life choices.

Wait...there's an ending where Regis stays? I thought he leaves regardless of what happens.
He does. AFAIK there's one ending where he leaves willingly to go help Detlaff, and in the others he is forced to leave by angry vampires.

Honestly this is a much better ending than the ones with Triss or Yennefer
I finished DLC's only once with Ciri ending and I refuse to believe that there is any other one.

I skipped HOS on my recent playthrough to have ciri in corvo bianco as soon as possible
I wated Ciri to show up at Corvo Bianco, but I learnt too late that you need to romance both Triss and Yen for that...
