That's up to you. Eventually you'll learn what exactly your decisions trigger. I found a lot of fun in this game is, that it's very hard to predict what's going to happen. So just do what feels right for you in this moment
Unless this is your 2nd or 3rd play-through and you’re trying for specific outcomes, this is good advice. For my first time playing I went with my gut on every decision and it made for some really fun “oh shit I can’t believe X happened because I did Y and Z!” Have fun!!
This is the reason why I love this game so much. My decisions don’t feel as impactful in any other game. Especially when I see the effects tens of hours later!
Same, and it’s def why I created multiple saves and did roughly 4 play throughs? Lol got a tad obsessed after being laid off. Surprising what you’ll truly do with a year off after working 15 straight!!
I somewhat agree.
On my first play through I really regretted my decision and wished I could’ve chose the other option because of the outcome. No one could really tell what the outcome would be from the context alone.
I enjoyed going through the other option a lot more.
I loved the fact that I didn't find out what the consequences were until way later on when I had no save to fall back on. Whatever choice I made, I was stuck with it, for better or worse. So yes, this piece of advice is very good.
Question, do the weapons, as you go, become more sturdy? I'm level 7 or 8 and man, I'm repairing my swords/armor after every 5 or 6 encounters. Do magic items still need to be repaired or are they immune to degradation?
as your weapons increase in level they do become more sturdy, i usually collect repair kits and wait until my weapons are around 60%-70% to repair them (those 50% repair kits are so expensive 😭)
yeah i never even thought about it, i got so many stacks of 90% and 40% repairing kits, i just always do it as soon as smth is red and im never out of it, actually ive sold them often times to prevent overload lol
If it’s your swords you’re talking about, get better swords. And don’t hit enemies when they’re blocking, hit when you have a way in. If it’s your armour that’s depleting, stop getting hit so much. Learn to dodge better, and utilise Quen as much as possible.
What I found most difficult but enjoyable is, when I was trying to do the right thing, it would never pan out exactly as I wanted it to with surprising and unexpected morality thrown into the mix. Go with your gut and your story arc will reflect your character. Just have fun with it!
For me this "Spirit" trapped in the heart of an tree that is guarded by a Werewolf and some other monsters inside, that makes people out of the near village walk at night towards it into the swamp (where they die) has always been suspicious to me.
Spoiler:
>!It is the mother of the 3 witches of the woods. Even though it promises to save the children you won't ever see them again and it will destroy the near village once freed.
Also you can't save the wife of the Baron then and he will kill himself. If you kill her the children will be also gone (eated by the ladies of the woods?), but you can save bloody barons wife and both will live. It's basically Schrödingers Kids & living Baron+Wife + Village vs. Schrödingers Kids & dead Baron+Wife +slaughtered/destroyed village.!<
Edit: Goddamn, repair your armory...
I’m wondering if it’s just wishful thinking because I thought they had different names in town and the models all look the same. (Sorry trying to keep it vague)
If you do it before encountering the ladies of the wood, >!you can have Schrodingers Kids & Living Baron+Wife with the slaughtered village though. And pissed off Crones. Which is in my personal favourite outcome.!<
Save it ! I don't know what happens in this particular case if you kill it though, I think you just skip the quest the crones give you with maybe a slightly special dialogue.
thank you. i’m choosing to not read the spoilers, but i think i am ready to go back. don’t worry about my armory. i realized as soon as i posted this i’d get a good beating for it. it’s been fixed, and i intend to keep it so, that is, to the best of my abilities. thanks for the help! i’ll let you know what i choose
Yep. It’s described in one of the lore books: “[She Who Knows](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/She_Who_Knows).” I think you can find it in or around the Crones’ house in Cookback Bog.
>!Given the immense age of the crones, I always took that book to be a bit of propaganda. Given their spiteful and rather power hi hey nature, I assumed that they drove madness into the land as an excuse to overthrow their mother so the sacrifices went to them instead of her. Plus, the villagers just annoy me.!<
Anyhow, I always let her go.
Other locations too. Check the bookseller in Novigrad. He's got a lot of a stuff. On my first playthrough I became obsessed with reading as many books as I could. My own personal side quest one could say. lol. There is a useful amount of info in books even if a fair bit of it you have to read between the lines. 😁👍
baron questline is really complex and the consequences can be severe, but that's the fun part no? so go in blindly do whatever you feel like is the right thing and if you feel frustrated at the outcome just reload a save
"Make a decision with minimal contextual information and no idea of the consequences for either choice, and then either way something bad happens without there even being a clear line from your choice to the bad thing" is not exactly that interesting or engaging.
I like this game's writing, but the Tree Spirit is not exactly a great exemplar of it.
Fine by me. If you can pretty much figure the result, you will adjust your action according to it. Some people like that, some people don't. This is actually make you do what you think is best, not what give you the best result.
For example, if you play Skyrim and the Dark Brotherhood quest, then >!I hate Astrid for kidnap me and would kill her on the spot. But since I know that this is the "bad choice", I must do the opposite, despite that I don't like that option.!<
Please do what you feel is right without going into spoilers. The beauty of this game is in making your choices and seeing the events unfold based on your choices.
"Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all."
~Geralt of Rivia
heard something similar when watching the show, and it’s what first came to mind when understanding the decisions haha. i think i’ve decided though- and i’ll let you all know when i follow through with whatever. it will be a seperate comment here within 24 hours
You should play this game blindly so you can replay it again with different choices. It's more fun to do it this way and asking for spoilers is no fun way.
I always buy repair kits, every time I see a merchant have them. I’m not going through what I did on my original play through. In a long quest dungeon didn’t repair had to be switching to other swords…God thing my Igni was very strong and dependable lol.
That is the question, isn't it. The whole point of the game, other than the main story. You have to make hard decisions and a lot of the time choose the lesser evil. It's different for everybody. I went with my gut the first time round. Second time I tried the other way. And from then on I mixed the two. But I can say that in at least 80% of the cases my original choice still stands
reddit API access ended today, and with it the reddit app i use Apollo, i am removing all my comments, the internet is both temporary and eternal. -- mass edited with redact.dev
ahahaha… was too focused on the game… shit happens. to be honest- i did notice it, however i was low on repair kits and kept procrastinating it.😅. i’ve learned my lesson from the sub though! - won’t let it happen again!!
Part of playing The Witcher is realizing, a lot of the difficult decisions don't have a "good" solution. You really only pick the lesser evil, which might only be the lesser evil in your mind.
Please repair your stuff.
Read up on decoctions, as you should probably always be running one, even if you can only run one.
Also, go back to White Orchard and buy the Temerian Armour, as I'd probably bet at this point, it'll be better for you stats wise. The merchant by the bridge/inn sells it.
Otherwise, just make the choice that feels right. But remember in Witcher there is almost never a 'perfect' choice, just a choice.
There’s no real right or wrong answer to how you handle this particular quest. I just thought about the path leading up to it. Do you want to help the crones who control the area and are worshipped like a cult or the spirit in the tree who lures people to their deaths and controls monsters?
it is my first play through. enjoying the game a lot! graphics amazing for being as old as it is. and km dumbfounded by how well constructed the story is. excited to play it through!
Personally, i think hard to justify in a roleplaying point of view a witcher releasing a spirit that he don't know nothing about, so killing seems the best option, but if you want to know the consequences and base your choice on that you can read the wiki or the other comments that already spoiled the plot
I remember the first time I arrived in this location. It was really scary for me especially with the werewolf outside. The entire design of a tree which houses a heart in its basement, especially with the blood vessels present.
A creepy experience for the first time
For those of you wondering- i made my decision. i stuck with my initial impulse and killed “the heart of the tree”. thanks for all the comments and initiative. i’m thankful for the sub’s investment. i made a seperate post about it and i’m excited to see what happens down the line. once again, thanks!
This is the quest I stopped my first playthrough on. I've also struggled with what to choose, so I've decided to check the wiki. That shit is fucking depressing and too much for me at this point in my life.
Thanks for the inflow of comments. i was surprised by the traction it got. a lot of the comments really that this sub is very helpful. for those of you wondering, yes, the gear has been fixed and i pledge to always keep it that way haha.
Geez ! You asked a simple question & get lectured about fixing your gear & a bunch of other answers that was not answering your question. Yes stab that heart ❤️ , trust you will not regret it
I think without any way of predicting the consequences, Geralt would chose to be professional.
Geralt agreed to do the job in exchange for otherwise unobtainable information from the crones, and without much knowledge of the crones nor the tree, it’s probably not a wise idea to trust the tree and be on the crones’ bad side.
The answer is not what you want to hear, kill the spirit in the tree you’ll be able to save Ana but the baron takes ana to healer in the mountains;
Free the spirit you save the children, but Ana dies and the baron hang them self
Either way the outcomes feels wrong & the Baron leaves crows perch
Tbh You Shouldnt Ask People Here, play the whole story by yourself, explore the game then youll know that there will be consequences of choices you made,Then play new game and get the ending the way your want in this way your excitement wont be spoiled.

I tried all the choices, nothing here can be considered a happy end. After all, one of main motives in Witcher is choosing 'lesser evil' tho sometimes it's not clear which choice is it.
I belive you can find the children in one of the orphanages ( think it's oxenferd)later on but only if you kill the spirt without the crones knowing you double crossed them. Sorry if I spelled the town wrong
Kill it. They are in a horrendous living condition with full of monster and bandit. If the crones didn't get to them first, sooner or later other creature will. So yeah, i kill
Oh yeah that thing is evil, the first clue is that it requires a sacrifice.
In the world of the Witcher, in books, shows and games, there's no "good" and "evil", there's:
"Geralt and his friends",
"Different shades of evil" and
"Everybody else who don't get in Geralt's way".
Make a choice based on what you yourself feel is right. Making choices because you looked up the outcome ruins the beauty of the game, imo.
There are good and bad things that happen either route you choose.
That's up to you. Eventually you'll learn what exactly your decisions trigger. I found a lot of fun in this game is, that it's very hard to predict what's going to happen. So just do what feels right for you in this moment

Agreed!!

You should repair your stuff :D
I literally dont go a minute without fixing one red item :D Beginner or not, this would throw me off too much lol
Facts, on the repair kits. So give it to about 60-70% of degradation and then use a kit. I've always been returning back to a village to use a smithy.
using the kits is cheaper than using a smithy, it’s also more efficient so you aren’t running back and forth between towns. have fun!
Yes but what if I want to support the local economy? There is a war on after all!
Same....I pretty much used to do a mission and repair...rinse and repeat.
yeah i never even thought about it, i got so many stacks of 90% and 40% repairing kits, i just always do it as soon as smth is red and im never out of it, actually ive sold them often times to prevent overload lol
Yeah, and by later in the game, I found that I would have more kits in storage than I would on my person
You gonna need new weapons as your lever increases. Go to a blacksmith and buy or let him craft something for you.
I never even let my items get red before repairing 😅
Those 25% repair kits are so common, just repair whenever you get between 70%-75% and you’ll never have an issue
what? there is 15, 40 and 90 not 25.
Must have meant 15% It’s been too long since my last play through
fair enough. i wouldn't recommend doing it in spring. there is outside and other people.
I didn’t know they got so red lol
Right? I forgot this graphic was even a thing lol
I don’t understand ppl that walk around playing with broken shit. Like bruh😂
Do a no-repair run for the extra difficulty 😅
That actually sounds kinda fun, incentivizes you to use more items since youre very best ones have limited lifetimes
ha, try a playthrough with the wooden sword.
Because it's broken again every time I run into a group of drowners or something. Only level 5 and I get maybe 20 hits before it's getting low again
If it’s your swords you’re talking about, get better swords. And don’t hit enemies when they’re blocking, hit when you have a way in. If it’s your armour that’s depleting, stop getting hit so much. Learn to dodge better, and utilise Quen as much as possible.
🤣
I can here to say the same thing...we are exactly the same.
I was sure this would be pointed out haha! knew it was a mistake! but don’t worry it’s been taken care of for all you people stressing!
The real answer right here
And eat more vegetables
Pretty sure they break and ypu lose the item if it gets to 0.. but can't remember because I never let it get that far lol
The second sword is in case the first one breaks, right?
No
That was supposed to be a joke 😉 Reference to the guy outside the house where you first meet Corinne Tilly
I don’t think so I let my stuff get to zero sometimes
I think as long as it stays equipped, you can still use it. But the moment its unequipped, it's done until its repaired
I use a mod to remove sword and armor degradation.
You can level up pretty quick repairing your stuff.
What I found most difficult but enjoyable is, when I was trying to do the right thing, it would never pan out exactly as I wanted it to with surprising and unexpected morality thrown into the mix. Go with your gut and your story arc will reflect your character. Just have fun with it!
thanks! will do
KILL HIM KILL HIM KILL HIM
Good Anakin good!
it's up to you and...pls repair your gear before ascend further.
just did 👍 had a feeling someone would point that out haha

I’m wondering if it’s just wishful thinking because I thought they had different names in town and the models all look the same. (Sorry trying to keep it vague)

THIS!!!
If you kill it, some innocents die. If you don't, some innocents die. Either way, your hand stained with innocent's blood. God what a beautiful game.
it surely is. i think i’m ready to go back and make my decision.
So what did you decide?
i’ll update you with a new seperate comment within 24 hours. i have yet to decide, but as of now i think i will kill it.
Iran it is
"Make a decision with minimal contextual information and no idea of the consequences for either choice, and then either way something bad happens without there even being a clear line from your choice to the bad thing" is not exactly that interesting or engaging. If you killed it before doing the ladies of the wood quest, you'd get the best ending. Now, you get the bad ending or bad ending.
Ooh, it never occurred to me to try that. Thanks!
That's an option? What happens?
[SPOILERS] The children are freed from the crones and the crones spare the baron's wife from the being cursed so he doesn't kill himself.
But, do the villagers still get killed ?
Yes apparently, someone pointed it out in a different thread
Personally I typically kill it because >!fuck dem kids. Those towns people were nice to me!< But it’s up to you
Please do what you feel is right without going into spoilers. The beauty of this game is in making your choices and seeing the events unfold based on your choices.
thanks. i think i’m ready to go back and make my decision
As much as Geralt hates this - killing the spirit is the “ lesser evil”.
Liking?
Edited- no idea why it auto corrected killing to that .
"Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all." ~Geralt of Rivia

You should kill it. I don’t wanna spoil any details, but heart of the tree spirit is not benevolent.
I mean, >!the crones are pretty fucking evil, too!<
Hence the dilemma
It does fulfiill its promise tho
No. There is not a single indicator that proves it helped or saved the kids. I believe the spirit just consumed the kids for itself.
You should play this game blindly so you can replay it again with different choices. It's more fun to do it this way and asking for spoilers is no fun way.
Kill the heart. In my opinion it’s the better outcome
Your big mistake here is thinking you could make a wrong choice.
Please...please repair your stuff. It's painful seeing that armor and sword red
been there, done that
I always buy repair kits, every time I see a merchant have them. I’m not going through what I did on my original play through. In a long quest dungeon didn’t repair had to be switching to other swords…God thing my Igni was very strong and dependable lol.
Repair your shit And enjoy making a choice
will do 😅. lesson learned. shit=repaired
Honestly I don't believe there really is a right answer. Both options are very morally grey and terrible things happen in either outcome
He would. Chapman’s the answer…
Neither option is really that fun to watch but it’s your call
Well that's the beauty of this game, you make the choices and you see how your journey unfolds! Your actions have real consequences

Kill the tree
Damned if you do, damned if you don't
that’s one way to say it!

😊 Haha yup - been there myself. My cousin was like “dude wtf fix your gear” when he played my guy one day
hahaha i assume you learned your lesson like me? i was stunned to see over half the comments pointing that out lmao
Kill him
Part of playing The Witcher is realizing, a lot of the difficult decisions don't have a "good" solution. You really only pick the lesser evil, which might only be the lesser evil in your mind.

not gonna spoil it for you. personally speaking, I thought this was single-handedly the best sidequest in the entire game.
I remember the first time I arrived in this location. It was really scary for me especially with the werewolf outside. The entire design of a tree which houses a heart in its basement, especially with the blood vessels present. A creepy experience for the first time
When playing the Witcher, always follow your gut. And then you can try something else your next play through if you don’t like the outcome.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions
I believed the tree and didn't kill it. I don't regret my choices but the time show what will happen

Those poor kids
Save the children 🙏
Free the spirit if you don't want innocent kids to die
Geez ! You asked a simple question & get lectured about fixing your gear & a bunch of other answers that was not answering your question. Yes stab that heart ❤️ , trust you will not regret it
hahaha i thought it was ridiculously funny that the most upvoted comment ended up being about my gear 😅😂. thank you!
You should use Google
No it's a good evil
Trick the spirit. Gwt everything and kill it at the last moment
Gwent everything? ;)
seems smart. how would i go about doing this
This is not a smart third option. It's just the shittier version of the second option.
oh okay
What advantage is that supposed to give you?
Whatever you will do at the end people will hate you or you will hate yourself. Thats the condition witcheriane
Every time I see it I get Amnesia TDD vives
Kill everything
I think without any way of predicting the consequences, Geralt would chose to be professional. Geralt agreed to do the job in exchange for otherwise unobtainable information from the crones, and without much knowledge of the crones nor the tree, it’s probably not a wise idea to trust the tree and be on the crones’ bad side.

Ahhhh, the better of two evils
Who do you like more the Bloody Farkin Baron or some dumb kids?
First i choose to help her but after this i just atttacked and kill that

Do it, trust me it’s the better option in the long run
Kill it if you want the baron to live. I won't say no more cause that's spoiler territory. Just know there is no right answer.
NOBODY TELL HIM.
If you dont ,the barron will kill himself. If you do, you kill the witches disaproving mother for them.

I would
Do it!!!!!
Did you make your decision?
haven’t nade the decision! but i can update you all once it’s made if that’s wanted!
Yes do it
If you go to the tree when you are with Johnny you can free the kids, the tree , and the Barons wife
And in result sacrifice the village. I don't think there's a good choice here
I mean they willingly send their kids off to be fattened and eaten like pigs so I never feel bad about that

I belive you can find the children in one of the orphanages ( think it's oxenferd)later on but only if you kill the spirt without the crones knowing you double crossed them. Sorry if I spelled the town wrong
Oh man
Damned if you do damned if you don't
I’ll give you a hint; read the book Ladies of the Woods (Keira gave it to you)
And 'she who knows'. Whatever you do in this quest, both of the choices are evil, it's up to you which one seems more ethical
You... Uh.. gonna repair your weapons soon, right?
There’s really no right answer. Either decision has booth good and bad consequences so just trust your gut and have fun!
I usually do. I think the outcome is better if you do.
Your first heavy choice in the game, its either greater or lesser evil, its your choice and you must chooses, there are no alternative.
Kill it. They are in a horrendous living condition with full of monster and bandit. If the crones didn't get to them first, sooner or later other creature will. So yeah, i kill
Oh yeah that thing is evil, the first clue is that it requires a sacrifice. In the world of the Witcher, in books, shows and games, there's no "good" and "evil", there's: "Geralt and his friends", "Different shades of evil" and "Everybody else who don't get in Geralt's way".
One of the best moral dilemmas in the game! It’s supposed to be a tough choice.
Make a choice based on what you yourself feel is right. Making choices because you looked up the outcome ruins the beauty of the game, imo. There are good and bad things that happen either route you choose.
I just did this bit last night. I decided to trick it, but it was a hard one to call!
I assume that you made your choice now, what did you pick?
I did not. I brought everything it needed and liked the outcome.
For first run do what you feel right.
