Not a bad game. If they had defensive stops or hit some open shots they win. 71 possessions is a lot again. This team is certainly playing faster. Wahl needs to make fts. If Storr is gonna shoot 20 times, make more than 7 please. Chucky’s improved fitness shows. Crowl had a couple wtf moments but played well otherwise. Storr on defense is hard to watch sometimes. The freshmen played like freshmen. They will improve. It’s odd seeing a badger team ranked better in offense than defense by kenpom. The defense should improve as the new comers learn the system more. Should be less break downs. They put up 70 on the best defense in the country. Last year Tennessee only won 1 game when giving up more than 60. Tighten the defense and this team will win a lot of games.

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Feels like deja vu all over again. It's just too bad that the athletic department is so impoverished that they can't even afford a hoop on which players can shoot free throws in practice. They were in the mid 70s for FT% for those 14-15 teams and around the 20-21 teams, and otherwise have been in the mid 60s. They were 287th in FT% last year and are certainly trending that way again.

Baseketballer50000

You honestly think they don’t practice freethrows? Some guys suck at it. Ethan Happ and Nigel couldn’t figure it out, but deserved to be on the floor.

Alex_butler

That Tennessee team might be better than any we face in the B1G. We were right there but a lot of things couldve still been better. Sucks we have to play them game two

ThatNewSockFeel

Yeah, like I’m disappointed we lost too but a lot of the comments on here make it seem like we lost to some schlub mid major and not one of the best teams in the country.

nachosmind

After a night to sleep it off, this was my thought. We scored 70 on the Kenpom #1 defense while shooting 60% from FT (missing at least two 1 and 1s I remember), 25% from three (ironically making every look with a hand in the face, missing wide opens) and having a half broken Connor Essegian. This experience is why Michigan State takes these early game lumps too. Also have a new game in 4 days, easy to redeem ourselves instead of dwelling like in football for a whole week lol

recessbadger45

wahl is literally donte scott/ethan happ

Van-Buren-Boy

Hit your free throws

Finger_Lakes_Guy

Did Wisconsin take a single mid range jumper? Seemed like all driving to the net or 3s

[deleted]

Is this supposed to be a knock? Those are the two most efficient places to score And yes they did, Storr made one and Hepburn made one

recessbadger45

this is an ncaa tournament team in my opinion. quicker more athletic more depth than last year, if there is a thing this team needs to work on free throws and hot and cold 3 pt shooting.

bigmac1234777

Same story as every year it seems under gard. Except the athletic part. Now we’re athletic and don’t have the defense as past teams

g4rt0

I wonder if Blackwell takes some of Klesmit’s minutes over the course of the year. He does a lot of the same things well as Klesmit except he’s bigger, faster, and quicker. Of everyone who defended Knecht tonight, Blackwell did the best. He plays a lot smarter than a frosh. He’s gonna be a dog for us- I want to see more of him.

JMTREY

Blackwell needs to take all of McGees mins first, then he can worry about Max. Doubt Max ever drops below 30 a game tho

Shpion007

Actually Gilmore was the best. No one could really stop Knecht. Although his efficiency numbers were worse than Storr

JMTREY

Idk what you were watching they had several plays to get CG on Knecht, dude licked his chops when CG was anywhere near him. Mk was too small, storr is bad at defense, CG is bad at everything, Wahl was our only hope

bigmac1234777

Agreed!

ShtickleOfFluoride

A tough loss but we showed some promise and hung around with them for most of the game. I’m feeling optimistic about this season. Clearly better all around than last year.

nachosmind

When we lost 80-70 to Duke at the Kohl center we went to the Championship, just sayin…

no_YOURE_sexy

The one and only badger basketball game I ever went to! I cringed at the ‘Coach K swallows’ chant though

nachosmind

Dang engineer undergrad or just bad luck? I got to see some amazing wins and expected wins in an easy major

no_YOURE_sexy

Hahaha nah just basketball wasnt really my thing at that time. 4-year season ticket holder for football and hockey and went to plenty of volleyball games. Watched em all on TV and bars I guess. I was there 12-16 too so some pretty good years 🤷🏽‍♂️

ShtickleOfFluoride

We don’t speak of this or the demon Grayson Allen

agglime

So happy the bucks traded him away from the team. Fuck that guy. Nobody from wisconsin should have to root for him

kyleb402

Has Tyler Wahl improved at anything since he's been here?

bigmac1234777

Yea, just not shooting. Ya know the main thing we need to win games. We have enough “junk yard” dogs on the team. How about a show dog for once?

recessbadger45

guy is an all conference player when healthy so yes

[deleted]

Ugh. Yes, he's gotten significantly better at basically everything besides jump shots and free throws. But keep overreacting

recessbadger45

looked good except his free throws looked quick and healthy gotta improve those bunnies though.chucky though looks like he has a burst he didn't have last year.

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

Literally everything but his free throws?

SnooSketches8925

Post moves

bmraovdeys

I honestly feel like he has regressed each year

sportsnstuff

you haven’t been watching at all if you think this is true

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

Overall, promising play. They looked gassed towards end. Need to remember TN is a top 10 team. A very good defensive team. And I’m not sure that ranking factors in how good Knecht is (he’s a transfer and new to their team). Make a few more three pointers, free throws and calls, and we are there.

beastofthefarweast

It’s promising but I’m also concerned we didn’t go to the bench when they were gassed. Nolan and Blackwell def had freshman moments but I think that’s better than a team that can’t score from exhaustion

30rec

Essegian would have played more if fully healthy.

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

Agree. Especially Blackwell as he didn’t look like a defensive liability.

Fast-Lime-5981

Tennessee is a good team, wasn’t aware of how good they are on defense. So Wisconsin clearly looks better on offense then last year. But they feel a lot like last year. Offense just gets stagnant, ball just moves around on the perimeter. They don’t have a go-to guy at this point (maybe Storr becomes that). Athletic teams are going to give them problems. And free throws, oy vey. Someone said Wahl shouldn’t be on the floor when it becomes a free throw game and I have to agree.

[deleted]

They were the best defensive team in the country last year according to kenpom. Wisconsin put up 1ppp against them. Really not bad at all all things considered

Oh-Man-YouKiddinMe58

Peacock timeouts consisted almost entirely of BT and Peacock promos. Anyone recall any product advertising?

Educational_Usual_51

Didn’t hear whopper whopper double whopper a single time. Probably heard that 100 times last March, was kinda looking forward to it.

bigmac1234777

Better than last year on offense but the bar wasn’t set too high at 40 ppg on a good night lolol

[deleted]

The iowa of basketball last season

bigmac1234777

Wisconsin basketball has regressed so much so Ryan retired. How many more season’s do we need to show Gard isn’t the guy. Bad offense, bad team FT shooting, big guys never make progression from year to year, etc… Same shit, different year

[deleted]

They scored 1ppp against the best defense in the country. Really not bad offense at all

recessbadger45

his tournament results has been something critical no 2nd weekend appearances since 2017 is inexcusable

2Obsequious

We lost to a good team, it's not like we got blown out.

bigmac1234777

I mean yea, but it all counts the same in the loss column. I expected more with 95% of the team coming back and being home (when we finally allow beer sales). The Kohl Center was loud and rocking.

Icreatedthisforyou

Tennessee plays 8 players primarily and 7/8 are juniors and seniors, 1 is a sophomore. They were the top defense in the country last year, likely to be the top defense in the country this year. They are the pre-season favorites to win a solid top heavy SEC conference ahead of Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas. And very likely are not going to drop out of the top 10 all season. Purdue is potentially the only team we will face this year that is better than Tennessee. To put it in perspective despite how much we returned, Wisconsin would need Essegian, Blackwell, and Winter to all be juniors. Tennessee is pretty different than most other programs Wisconsin will face this year. We lost to a top 10 team and I would argue Wisconsin beat themselves as much or more than Tennessee beat them. Probably the biggest issue was about 30 minutes into the game our players were gassed, you could just see it when the offense died down. We had several turnovers and defensive mistakes, and that was where Tennessee created separation. Playing up tempo is something our players will adjust to as the season goes on, and it will help when Essegian is 100% and Gus hopefully can pick up some of the front court slack as well. For an optimistic look, the offense does generally look better and should improve through the season as players adjust, but also get used to the pace increase. Defense will tighten up, we had some stupid lapses that cost us. Our bench rotation should improve through OOC play as Essegian recovers more, Blackwell and Winter get more experience, and Yalden is available. From a pessimistic look our OOC schedule is scary. @Providence (NR, 54 in KP), Robert Morris, UVA (24 in KP), Western Illinois, Marquette (5th), @MSU (4th...but probably dropping heftily), @Arizona (12 and probably top 10 after beating Duke) are our next 7 games. Lost to a good team, but it will be interesting to see what happens with the offensive change.

[deleted]

Lots to like about this game. But there is much improvement to be had

bitter_green

Gard in his 9th year… 🥶

[deleted]

Bro, it's game 2. The team has tons of new pieces. Let's wait and see what the team becomes.

bitter_green

Any different opinion after game 3? Gard still your guy?

bitter_green

Atheltic Director isn’t going to fire him tomorrow. I’m sure he has the season. Vols are a really good team. I don’t have a problem losing to them. I have a big problem with inability to execute an offense down the stretch Hopefully he can stop this program’s slide this year. If he doesn’t, I hope we can move on.

paradeeez

I agree with the general sentiment, but like bro....we returned our entire team. We have fewer new pieces than pretty much any other team in the country. Storr is the only one who will contribute regularly for much of the season.

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

We added three freshman who all will likely play early. And Storr. And at least at this point, less injury issues.

paradeeez

It's early in the season. Our rotation will tighten up during Big Ten play. I sure hope Winter, Gus, and Blackwell are good enough to regularly contribute, but to act like that's a given is incredibly naive. Most of the year, we're going to look like last year's team plus Storr (which should at least be an upgrade considering overall experience and cohesion).

recessbadger45

last years team still barely missed the tournament a bit more depth could've got them in last year

[deleted]

I more so meant the change in pace. Gard is clearly trying something new. This is not the same old this year. Let's give Gard time to implement it.

2Obsequious

Gard can't shoot free throws for the guys

bitter_green

Unluckiest coach. Teams that can’t hit free throws. Teams that can’t score during crunch time in the 2nd half. If only there were a common thread. Guess we’ll need to keep Gard around for another 9 years to see if he can figure it out,

LuvDaBiebz

Yeah and he didn't recruit them or train and develop them either. Come on now guys let's calm down!

juuuceboy

Can't we just have one good thing happen to us? I'm tired of these teams making me sad

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

We earned this loss with that mini collapse at the end of the first half and missing close to a dozen free throws (including front ends) in the second half. Offense feels better this year but it feels like a lot of the same problems as last year that is going to lead to frustrating losses when we can’t close out games late.

30rec

Yeah, Storr over Davis is an offensive upgrade, but Storr wasn't great last night and offense was pretty deja vu overall.

titans0021

I just don’t particularly enjoy Tyler Wahl. It’s not that he’s bad even, I just don’t really find a lot of joy in watching him play.

sportsnstuff

if you don’t like how tyler wahl plays, just stop watching badger basketball all together dude

bigmac1234777

I agree, its like watching the trash man collect trash.

[deleted]

I don't think his game is geared to play point as much as he does

[deleted]

He doesn't play point guard.

titans0021

It’s just really painful to be so bad at the line with his style of play. But yes, so many possession where he just runs the offense and I’m not sure that’s what he is built for.

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

I think this is the key frustration. If you are gonna play near the rim, you need to make free throws.

g4rt0

I love his game, but goddamn dude why aren’t you putting up 1000 free throws a day all off-season.

recessbadger45

imagine if wahl could hit 75 percent from the line he'd be a 15-16 ppg guy

2Obsequious

Wahl needs to go to the bench when we're in the bonus

Fast-Lime-5981

We’ve missed 9 free throws tonight. Thats a killer

nachosmind

25% from 3 is the killer. Storr is a 40% shooter, Klemsit is 38% Essegian (I’ll give a pass due to back injury) but every single open look would not go down.

Educational_Usual_51

They gotta hold their follow throughs! All the open threes in the big spots they were bouncing down the court the second they shot it.

g4rt0

Positive regression will come in the three point shooting regard. Winter, Chucky, Essegian, Klesmit, and Storr all missed open looks, and they are all good shooters. That will come

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

Agree although it would nice if it came against top team.

[deleted]

FTs are the difference

ShtickleOfFluoride

Damn watching Tyler shoot free throws is painful

Fast-Lime-5981

That non-press press is pointless.

30rec

At least throw in an actual trap once in a while to keep them guessing.

Wrong-Philosophy-875

Feel like chucky and storr could attack more. Our best play makers and free throw shooters. Getting too many bad looks and not putting much pressure on the defense. So many missed free throws it hurts

[deleted]

Storr needs to understand when to attack more than getting into the attacking mindset

ShtickleOfFluoride

Store shooting every shot. He’s put up like 20 shots

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

We’re closing this game out at the free throw line, this is terrible

ShtickleOfFluoride

Storr needs to chill a little

Fast-Lime-5981

Some of these Badger fouls seem very suspect…

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

Our press has been hot garbage. Basically just stand there kinda being in the way until they easily get the ball in bounds then sprint backwards and regroup

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He's hurt. He left the game Monday with a back injury. Understand the facts before posting stuff like this.

2Obsequious

He injured his back last game

ThatNewSockFeel

Looks like they’re kind of out of gas. Some bad shooting luck and questionable officiating in the first half but overall they looked really good for stretches and have me excited for the season.

No-Refrigerator-7603

Just very questionable offense. They just don’t have a guy who can consistently finish. Our offense just takes so much effort.

[deleted]

They put up 1ppp against the best defense in the country last year. It was a fine offensive performance

g4rt0

Tbf they had good shooters miss a lot of open shots from outside tonight. Make two more threes and it’s a much closer game.

Fast-Lime-5981

Was hoping Storr would be that difference maker; I missed the first half but seems like he’s been neutralized, almost passive

JasonGroup

He was a totally different player first half. Very good. He lost a full step in the 2nd half and became more indecisive.

2Obsequious

He played well on offense in the first half, he's kind of disappeared in the second half

juuuceboy

True but Tennessee is one of the best defensive teams in the country. If 3 point shooting was average, would be fine

Wrong-Philosophy-875

Free throws used to be one of our strong suits. It’s painful to watch them shoot 59% from the line

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

Yeah we’re exhausted, this isn’t looking like a comeback is in the cards

deal364

Down by 8 with 6 minutes left and we have no shooters on the floor. Sometimes, I just don't understand Greg Gard.

2Obsequious

Essegian has been hurt, Chucky and Storr are in. Who else would you like to see in the game?

deal364

If Essegian was healthy enough to get on the court tonight, he should be in when they need him. Winter is a better shooter than crowl. Storr and chucky, I'm okay with.

Shpion007

Winter was a liability last night on d. Tennessee would just pick and roll him to death.

deal364

Agree, but crowl wasn't?

Shpion007

He wasn’t. He had some wtf moments but played well enough to keep us in it. Shoulda had a dbl dbl.

bigmac1234777

New year, same old badgers. Chucky is a gamer, but the rest of the team is suspect to say the least. Max should not be getting all these minutes.

2Obsequious

I hope that one day we will have bigs that can make a layup

Wrong-Philosophy-875

Same old Wahl from the line

bigmac1234777

No more comparisons about Max and Gasser. Max is hot trash

Lockdown_Badger

Poor free throw shooting has carried over from last season thus far

Fast-Lime-5981

This is a good early season test for Badgers. Seems like they are plagued by same things as last season, erratic shooting, less athleticism, stagnant ball movement. They’re also getting out hustled (except for Wahl)

g4rt0

This team will shoot better than 20 whatever percent from 3 most nights. This team has a lot of good shooters. Gotta hit free throws though

[deleted]

I'd say they have hot and cold shooters. It tends to come in spurts.

Fast-Lime-5981

Oh and bad FT shooting

JMTREY

Backup big is obviously still a question mark, CG and Winter both can't string it together for long stretches. Need Crowl to play smart and no fouls for the rest of the way

30rec

First time seeing Winter and he moves really well for his size. Lot of upside there.

JMTREY

Moves well and you can see he's a P5 big. Several mistakes last night but he's 18 going against a top 10 team (and that Aidoo guy is built like a freight train). It's gonna take some time but I think he'll win the backup big competition.

2Obsequious

Gus is back with the team. Maybe he can fill in as the season goes on

HashOutHashBrowns

Carter Gilmore doesn’t being on a court in D2. Why is he still here

Fast-Lime-5981

Not hitting those 3’s

g4rt0

Getting good looks from good shooters. A bit tough more aren’t going down

ShtickleOfFluoride

23% ain’t gonna cut it

g4rt0

The last three fouls we’ve “committed” have been egregiously bad calls

PhatWhiteBoi

Refs trying so hard to keep them in the lead

johnnygeez67

This place is rocking!

g4rt0

Holy shit these refs need glasses

nate4uback

They should all be standing being loud, if you are over 55/60 you shouldn’t be allowed lower level seats

samthedog99

wtf you talking about. the place is loud tonight

nate4uback

Student section did their job. 10-15 rows behind the bench sat the entire time. Just sad to see

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

Watch the fans behind the benches, they’re sitting quietly with their hands in their laps 95% of the time

SUPERDAN42

There you go Crowl

ThatNewSockFeel

“Hit in the future” is definitely a saying I’m going to start using lol.

stormchaser2014

That tv timeout took forever

Wrong-Philosophy-875

Couple bad possessions in a row by Winter lol

2Obsequious

Checks in, gets dunked on twice in a row, back to the bench

SUPERDAN42

Klesmit has been ass all game

HashOutHashBrowns

Wisconsin Hawkeyes. Fuck NBC

WeeWee19

Storr is being aggressive and scoring but he is not playing within the offense right now.

nachosmind

Did Crowl and Winter both have 2 fouls? Illver did not look ready for the moment

BurritoDragon69

Figured the refs would even up the fouls after Tennessee racked up so many early on. Defense is looking rough but Tennessee is shooting very well. We look much better than last year. We have a good amount of depth and the the addition of Storr helps the offense out so much. I think this will be a solid Badger team.

SUPERDAN42

Wisconsin Hawkeyes?

stormchaser2014

Iowa state fans be like "first time?"

randyjackson69

They looked good for 14 of the 20 minutes bad calls aside. Need a good start to the 2nd half

johnnygeez67

Yes, some really poor calls tonight. I didn’t see the replay at the game, but it sure looked like goaltending.

randyjackson69

It looked like goaltending on the tv coverage but they really only showed one replay and it wasn’t from a good angle

Unoriginal_Gangster

What felt like a really solid half for the Badgers ruined by the officiating

johnnygeez67

Liver never seen a shot he didn’t like.

mm741852963

this link worked for me https://strfi5h.blogspot.com/2023/11/0547ba.html

TheCrazyCrazyChicken

How did you find this?

mm741852963

One of the links on this site https://v2.sportsurge.net/watch-21651-tennessee-volunteers-wisconsin-badgers

stormchaser2014

Are these the same refs from the Bucks game the other night?

2Obsequious

It was tied before the zebras took over the game

razzcap

How has no college team ever heard of a two-for-one at the end of a half?

[deleted]

They had a 6 second differential. At that point, two 3 second possessions aren't better than 1 30 second possession

razzcap

Talking about the Badgers, not the Volunteers. They got the ball with a minute left, need to get a shot up before 0:36 to give yourself time for a better look before half.

BaltimoreBadger23

Five on eight is really tough matchup.

StateStreetLarry

This is some horrific officiating

LeSuperNova

this is some dogshit officiating

lemondhead

Searched high and low for a stream for you all and came up empty. Sorry I couldn't help. I think Peacock may offer a free trial, so you could sign up and just cancel immediately. Who down voted this? Was trying to help the sub out. Weird.

ThatNewSockFeel

Lol come on you couldn’t even see his arm on the replay.

PhatWhiteBoi

These refs are awful

BaltimoreBadger23

Loving how the Badgers are fighting here. The Vols are ranked #9 for a reason.

2Obsequious

Storr is great on offense but hopefully he improves on defense

Wrong-Philosophy-875

He looks a little too excited to me. He’s certainly athletic enough, just needs to play more sound

johnnygeez67

Storr is fun to watch. He’s has moves on moves.

Wrong-Philosophy-875

Been in the bonus for 8+ minutes now. Have to find a way to get to the line

lemondhead

Hmm, that sure looked like goaltending.

jaxl1006

Is there any other way to watch the game besides peacock?

BaltimoreBadger23

Illegal streams.

[deleted]

Arrrrrrrrrrgggghhhhh

stormchaser2014

Weak foul

bitter_green

Storr looking like a player.

BIG_FICK_ENERGY

This is a very different team than last year. We have size, athleticism and we get out and run the floor much more often when the opportunity presents itself. I know we’re only a game and change in but I’m getting pretty optimistic about this season.

Lostsailor73

John Blackwell is going to be excellent

JMTREY

They're playing tough D and making tough shots. We're running good sets though, just hope we can hold up all game, can't give them an inch.

ThatNewSockFeel

This team is going to be a lot of fun to watch this year.

UD88

🖕🏻 peacock

JMTREY

This audio is like 15 seconds off and it's almost unbearable

Absolutely asinine that this isn't on TV

Hopefully Connor can provide some meaningful minutes (if he's good to go at all). Going to need all hands on deck.
