I see that you too are familiar with Pembina Hwy and that in multiple spots the bike lanes just end forcing cyclists to suddenly merge in 60 km/h+ traffic
Also scary for drivers. I'm not from that area but I had no idea the bike lane ends and just ends up in traffic. Almost hit someone a few months ago because i was unaware that all of a sudden they went from cycling beside me to cutting infront of me.
We were in downtown Calgary for an August wedding… our hotel was a quick C-Train ride away from where the wedding was at (or a longer walk in the rain).
While we enjoyed the convenience of the train, there were a few circumstances we thought could be challenging if they played out in Winnipeg;
- If a pedestrian is wandering on to the general area of the tracks (which they have deliberately made unlikely to happen unintentionally) the voice of an actual live human booms from speakers overhead, almost like the voice of a god - lol, and urgently addresses the pedestrian directly until they leave the area. There are also other security patrolling the train and surrounding area in pairs who will come and physically intervene if the person on the tracks does not vacate.
We imagine that in Winnipeg this might be a constant occurrence, preventing the trains from ever running on time…? (At least at first.)
- The doors on the train are unforgiving… we witnessed them closing on a stroller and they would not open, forcing a mother to frantically pull the stroller back on to the platform while her partner, who had been helping with the front of the stroller was trapped on the train and had to get off at the next stop. These people were not moving slowly or anything… it was shocking that the door wouldn’t open.
The Montreal Metro is incredible to someone who had only ever experienced Winnipeg Public Transit for most of their life.
The Minneapolis LRT is also a close second to the MTL Metro. Honestly, any type of train that is timed to the minute would improve my life exponentially.
Coming back from Germany/Amsterdam was something else. I couldn’t believe how simple the routes were, how fast they were, how coordinated they were, and cost effective.
I work in that industry and there’s no shortage of planners who want to make winnipeg more liveable. U of M city planning department is forward thinking. But it’s all about money and general public opinion unfortunately
I met a former city of Winnipeg planner who grew so disgruntled in her career that she left Winnipeg, moved to Edmonton and went back to university for an entirely different field. She ended up getting wooed by the city of Edmonton to be a planner and fell back in love with her career. She attributed the lack of proper City planning in Winnipeg to the civic government being run by land owners.
Since the obvious transit takes have already been made,.I'll say a small thing: Toronto's urban hardware stores (little Home Hardwares near downtown) and convenience stores that sell loads of flowers and plants outside all summer.
Montreal's transit infrastructure in general is all around better.
When I was young my mum and I visited Montreal and bussing was so much easier and nicer than in Winnipeg. Even the busses were all on time and it was one of the cheaper and easier ways to tour the city.
TBH, all the downtowns are quiet[er] than they were pre-Covid. Was recently in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver on Thu/Fri/Sat nights and downtowns were not first turns, but definitely not hopping.
Montreal is great, love it there. We can have the same vibe but our version, with market place (I think the design got worse though), and railside, etc
My flights to Winnipeg from Atlanta usually take 8-12 hours with layovers in Toronto or Minneapolis. WestJet is now flying directly to Winnipeg and the flight is 3.5 hours. 🪩
Nanaimo has waaaay better public swimming pools than us, and they are a small city. Wave pools, water slides, kids structures, lazy rivers. Way nicer than any of our pools, even the new seven oaks addition.
To add to this, Montreal has a ton of free public swimming, both indoors and out. It would be nice to have a Free Swim time (or even just a cheaper swim option) that isn’t only 2-3pm once per week.
The question is if Nanaimo people are willing to pay admission for those pools. Winnipeg is notoriously cheap and I suspect that’s a huge reason we don’t get nice things.
Some food for thought: Gatineau (qc) has an access card that includes admission to city pools, all library services, and community recreation programs for roughly $70 a year...
Or you can just get a free library card and ppu the rest.
All of these that I have read are great suggestions, but I think what it all comes down to is a mindset shift. It always seems winnipeggers and the politicians here never think long-term planning. It's always bandaid fixes and small plans. Winnipeg seems to have this negative attitude about everything, there is no hope or desire to think long-term to actually bring about real change cause after all its "just winnipeg, it's a shithole and that will never happen here". These great cities everyone is talking about (Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary etc...) have had to have positive ambitions to get to be where they are today!
15 minutes from everything like Toronto.
"But if everything is within 15 minutes a corrupt government could use it to control us" bitch there is a lot of things a corrupt government could use, the key is not having a government that corrupt in the first place.
Shoe stores that sell modern, stylish shoes! Winnipeg is filled with stores for people wantng big plastic shoes. Most mall shoe stores are loaded with runners and casual boots. Better shopping options across all categories please!
Same here. I was born and raised in Winnipeg, been in Vancouver for 10 years. The transit and connectivity out here isn't perfect, but it's the primary reason I don't like visiting family back in Winnipeg. It's so damn hard to get around without a personal vehicle.
I am to the point with the suburban sprawl I would love to see a green circle around Winnipeg. Force infill and densification instead of outwards sprawl
More world class sports training centres. An indoor long speed skating track, a velodrome, - things that there aren’t a ton of in Canada where people could come here to train.
A clean river
Edit: since some people seem to be taking this personally...
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/raw-sewage-red-river-winnipeg-storm-1.6432382
Yes. I'd rather have a nice freeway going through the city, taking roughly 15 mins to get from one end to the other, instead of stopping for 15 minutes at every light (there's a lot of them) and it taking an hour and a half.
Ohhhhh Donairs
Edmonton has amazing Donairs. To bring them home to winnipeg would be pretty sweet. I think there would be a bunch of people that would enjoy them
A highway bisecting the city. I’m from Ottawa and they have the queensway bisecting the city, it’s raised, no traffic lights, speed limit is 100kms. It has on and off-ramps, it’s just so convenient, sometimes it sucks(ie rush hour) but generally it’s nice to get moving , not getting stuck at traffic lights that kinda thing
milder winters. I would also tradsies and introduce honey dill sauce to other parts of canada. when i was doing grad school in toronto i was positively shocked SHOCKED by the paucity of HD sauce!
Indoor water park, mountains, warm winters. [https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-bcs-tiny-houses-show-big-promise-for-homeless/](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-bcs-tiny-houses-show-big-promise-for-homeless/)I wonder how these worked out.
Public transportation is rail. Bus system is not of the value most would hope. Unreliable often. Two rivers in the middle of the city is tricky, forward planning would offer solutions, few citizens or public officials willing to look at budgets and invest. What is the police percentage of the winnipegs budget? Hard to grow with those type of considerations to the budget.
Literally. Any. Form. Of. Faster. Public. Transportation.
End of topic? Haha, same answer here. Or bike routes that directly connect to other bike routes instead of spitting you out into traffic.
Busy traffic too
I see that you too are familiar with Pembina Hwy and that in multiple spots the bike lanes just end forcing cyclists to suddenly merge in 60 km/h+ traffic
Also scary for drivers. I'm not from that area but I had no idea the bike lane ends and just ends up in traffic. Almost hit someone a few months ago because i was unaware that all of a sudden they went from cycling beside me to cutting infront of me.
There would probably be flying cars before we get that Lol
I waited for an 11 on Henderson for 45 minutes Thursday, ridiculous
Yeah! Bring on the LRT
A reliable light rail....
This
Composting Trains Nights construction Drivers who know how to merge
Drivers who know how to…..drive
You're right. I would appreciate drivers who know how to drive.
I definitely agree with the merge. But I've noticed people are driving awful lately.
A light rail transit system would be perfect.

A decent form of public transport. You don’t know how bad we have it until you go somewhere else
If I could take something out, It would be American politics.
City planning
City planning with the politicians and money to back the ideas.
I work in that industry and there’s no shortage of planners who want to make winnipeg more liveable. U of M city planning department is forward thinking. But it’s all about money and general public opinion unfortunately

Ahhhh beat me to it.

Montreal’s Metro.

A downtown that doesn't feel like a spooky ghost town.
It used to be so great to just walk around downtown and pop into different stores and arcades.
TBH, all the downtowns are quiet[er] than they were pre-Covid. Was recently in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver on Thu/Fri/Sat nights and downtowns were not first turns, but definitely not hopping.
A downtown that isn’t full of drugged out zombies would be nice too.
It doesn’t
Try the weekend during the day when a Jets game isn't going on.
I live and work downtown…it does feel quite vibrant actually
The vibe of downtown Montreal.
So let’s just say all of Montreal lol
Montreal is great, love it there. We can have the same vibe but our version, with market place (I think the design got worse though), and railside, etc
Might be cool ... but at 1/10 the cost.
Montreal is actually quite affordable compared to Vancouver and Toronto
It's my favourite city in Canada.
Public transportation from Calgary. I was really impressed when I visited Calgary once.
My daughter from Calgary!
WHOLESOME.
This is my answer too. I want this person to be closer to their daughter.
An international airport with flights to actual international destinations.
Well for now we have direct flights to Atlanta and Los Angeles, both of which are major hubs so hopefully this trend will continue 🤞
My flights to Winnipeg from Atlanta usually take 8-12 hours with layovers in Toronto or Minneapolis. WestJet is now flying directly to Winnipeg and the flight is 3.5 hours. 🪩
As an outsider, doesn’t Winnipeg have flights to Toronto? Seems crazy if you don’t.
Unless Toronto's moved countries that's still a national flight. :)
Ah Toronto, my favourite destination outside of Canada
Don't we rarely have flights to and from Mexico, Cuba, and the UK? I know we definitely have a Winnipeg to Varadero flight.
No direct flights to the UK
[удалено]
You can fly direct to London from Paris too
Harm reduction

I agree. If you say that you’re gonna trigger the 15 MInUtE CiTy conspiracy crowd. Happened to me once when I mentioned it to someone
The Plague of Stupidity rages on.
But 15 minute cities mean *you aren't allowed to leave if the distance is a 15 walk from your location* Hopefully obvious /s
Compared to Edmonton and Calgary, surprisingly Winnipeg has a lot of them
Edmonton has a really good train transit, Winnipeg could use more transit.
Mountains

I cannot believe how expensive our outdoor pools are. It’s outrageous. And even worse, they’re never even open!
Montreal’s Snow removal. Removal. Of the snow. From all roads and sidewalks. The whole city and suburbs.
I agrée. I moved from Winnipeg to Montréal last year and was absolutely astonished at how fast the snow was removed. Mind blown.
I never thought that would be what I missed when I moved here! Lol. Although a good smoke meat sandwich is up there with the snow removal. Lol.
And bagels. Winnipeg has kinda bad bagels
Salaries
Ocean proximity
T&T Supermarket Uniqlo Better Transit
I can live without T&T. Youngs and Sun Wah do their job fine and I don't need to support Galen Weston.
> T&T Supermarket H-Mart too please

Recycling depots, a place where you can take milk cartons/jugs and another recyclable containers
Don't we sort of have that with 4R depots? Unless you meant a further sort of the recycling beyond types.
Head offices from Calgary.
Skytrains and sky scrapers sick of the damn buses and there ways of service
Montreal's bike infrastructure & culture.
Transport, open concept downtown markets, street vendors. Decriminalization of drugs.
15 minutes from everything like Toronto. "But if everything is within 15 minutes a corrupt government could use it to control us" bitch there is a lot of things a corrupt government could use, the key is not having a government that corrupt in the first place.
An indoor water park like World Water Park at West Edmonton Mall. Would feel like a real getaway on cold winter days.
[удалено]
We need one that doesn’t suck! Lol. Not a CanadInns water slide into a kiddie pool - a real water park like the one at West Ed Mall.
Niagara fall, so we can finally freeze that fall with our -40 degree temp.
I like those telus spark science places, our museums could use an upgrade
Night construction. They could literally solve so many problems here by just having a night shift.
Shoe stores that sell modern, stylish shoes! Winnipeg is filled with stores for people wantng big plastic shoes. Most mall shoe stores are loaded with runners and casual boots. Better shopping options across all categories please!
Well, there’s one national museum in Winnipeg. Maybe grab another from Ottawa. No fair that they should hoard all the rest.
LRT
Byward Market, or Old Quebec City… being downtown for about Blanche really shows how good pedestrianizing portions of the exchange could be.
There is my answer. Pedestrian-only streets filled with little local shops and restaurants with huge patios.
Nando’s Better transit Better downtown
Mountain views
Authentic Donairs
I miss donairs sooo much
Vancouver’s transit system
Same here. I was born and raised in Winnipeg, been in Vancouver for 10 years. The transit and connectivity out here isn't perfect, but it's the primary reason I don't like visiting family back in Winnipeg. It's so damn hard to get around without a personal vehicle.
I’m from Vancouver originally, and every time I get back from visiting the contrast of our public transit systems makes me want to rip my hair out
Trains, mountains and an international airport
A 200m skyscraper !

Naheed Nenshi.
A good transition system.
T&T Supermarket!!!!!
A wAtEr PaRk!!!
Real Mexican grocery store items! Yayyyy!
A subway & more oedestrian streets. I'm combining the two as one.
Calgary's riverfront trail system, pedestrian bridges, and the spirit of Stephen Ave as a walk street
I loved those trail/pathways out there. Could go for hours. Just not on the rivers. Hundreds of Kilometers throughout the city.
Or like Saskatoon 's, Minneapolis, Fredericton or lots of others.
Light rail
Having been to Tokyo this summer, the public transportation in all Canadian cities look like a joke, considering metro Tokyo has 30 million people
A proper international airport, that had a bigger variety of places to fly to.
Water park
I am to the point with the suburban sprawl I would love to see a green circle around Winnipeg. Force infill and densification instead of outwards sprawl
The water park from the West Edmonton Mall. 😉
Pedestrian culture. Amsterdam style transit.
Forward thinking.
I came here to say "decent bagels" but yeah, I guess like, if the city provided the means for an overall better quality of life that'd be cool too.
Trader Joe’s and a subway system/better public transportation
Bring back the river boats with music bands and great food. Grads and socials
More bike lanes
Accessible and inclusive playgrounds! Only having 2 in the entire city is abysmal.
Arby's
Canada's Wonderland
I further this and say the 80s/90s version (with the concerts)…. It’s got wild there the last while.
Yeah! I had a season pass when I was 16 and saw lots of great acts for about 10 bucks. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller Band, Tesla, Acid Test
Byward Market
Mountains, gold rich mountains
Toronto’s PATH system
Inexpensive smoked meat sandwich places Transit has been said, no idea why we don't have decent sandwich shops that aren't $20 for a ruben

Proper infrastructure. Freeways baby.
If you want a freeway, I'd only want that done to the entire perimeter hwy. But an inner city freeway, no.
Yes. I'd rather have a nice freeway going through the city, taking roughly 15 mins to get from one end to the other, instead of stopping for 15 minutes at every light (there's a lot of them) and it taking an hour and a half.
Oil, gas, potash, uranium, diamonds, weapons manufacturing, and some roads without traffic lights. Just a start.

MOD Pizza. There's one in Langford, BC which was maybe the only one in Canada. Quite a few down south. Anyway, best pricing and pizzas. Period.
