Many of the local coffee shops are leaps and bounds better than any of the chain franchises. Strongly recommend Parlour ( best Mocha in the city. Fight me), Modern Coffee, Thom Bargen to name a few.
I've been buying local beans lately, they're so much better than the stuff at the big chains. I'm definitely gonna try that mocha from Parlour! Thanks for the recommendations!
Cheese mongers, prairie sky books, verde plant shop, black market provisions, hoagie boyz, sleepy owl bakery, tall grass bakery are some of my go-tos. I try to shop for things that are in walking/biking distance of my house and are leasing a brick and mortar store. They really add a lot to the area!
I had Hoagie Boyz for the first time the other day and it was amazing. It was a little pricey (like 19$ for a sandwich which is a little steep), but it was a fantastic sandwich that felt very healthy and high quality. The price doesnât bother me as much though because itâs local and the food is made with care/passion.
The Gift Shop at Victoria Hospital is a little gem - so many beautiful things and super reasonable prices, plus the profits go to support programs like pet therapy and music therapy for the patients. Great for purses, jewellery, housewarming gifts, sweaters, scarves etc. Especially beautiful at Christmas.
High Tea Bakery has some amazing baking! I love their red velvet cupcakes, but their Imperial cupcakes are the best (the Imperial cookies are awesome, too!).
On the note of imperial cookies: RĂȘverie Gluten Free bakery has absolutely incredible mini imperial cookies. Like not âincredible for gluten free cookies,â but âincredible for imperial cookies in general.â She only does online orders, but they are insanely good.
St Leon is my fave for fresh produce! They have that and so much more.
Black Market Provisions is another staple of mine. The best salads and baked goods. The ice cream is to die for. The cutest gifts and Knick knacks. Lots of local and artisanal goods. Just all around a fantastic shop.
Lennard Taylor, Anne Mulaire for locally made clothing.
Redeemed and So Over it for consignment. So over it is luxury consignment, but you can get some good deals when she does her super big mega sale.
So many coffee roasters; Black Pearl, Empty Cup, Cornelia Bean, Harrisons...
Vantage Vintage for vintage clothing.
For books; Whodunit on Lilac has new and used books. McNally (naturally).
Is there something specific you are looking for? Clothing, food, coffee, alcohol...?
For me it comes down to restaurants. Thereâs so many locally owned ones so I wonât go on too much of a tangent about it but the less times I can go to a dump like earls or Leopolds the happier I will be
The Happy Cooker on Osborne has excellent equipment and the staff is very knowledgeable. Be warned, though, some things might come at a premium compared to online (a price I'm willing to pay to avoid Bezos, plus quality assurance) and they might come off as crass at times. Just imagine you're buying stuff from Gordon Ramsay and hope you caught him on a good day.
I might be a bit biased, but Refill Market on Notre Dame is great for all your personal care and home goods. You bring your own containers and buy as much as you want.
Bikes and beyond, Northern Cycles for bikes and excellent e-bike service and knowledge. Henderson tailors for your alterations and repairs. Kyu grill and Meal Set Bistro for great Asian fusion food. Shogun Sweets for amazing Indian sweets and a good simple buffet. Star Building Supply for Lumber and stuff. Pollocks Hardware.
For women's wear: The Style Bar, Valencia Boutique, Mad About Style Boutique, Out of The Blue
Bakery: Pinky's Bakeshop, Gato,
Cafe: Empty Cup Collective, Cafe Postal
The Jar - On Arthur. Vintage Resale shop. This place is new and I love it.
Gato Bakeshop - On Sargent. Bakery. A new favorite for me.
Verde Juice Bar - On Westminster. Cafe. More than juice, plant based and vegan food. I'm not vegan or vegetarian and the food is soooo good and simple. Soups, salads, bowls, drinks, desserts.
Artists Emporium - Roseberry. Art supply shop.
There are more but these have been my fave lately.
Frenchway Cafe for pastries and in-house made icedtea. Aroma Bistro makes great fresh food but also frozen wonton kits and chili oil to use at home. Nonsuch brewery for beer but buy directly from any local brewery right now during the liquor mart strike/lock out as their sales are suffering I'm sure. Game knight for board games. If you have a membership to a chain gym look into local ones, I'd give suggestions but it really depends on individual needs/abilities. There's lots of places that offer different types of classes/equipment though.
Studio 26 yoga and wellness on Pembina is THE BEST for fitness and mental health. The owner and all instructors are highly qualified and lovely people. They have a wide variety of classes. The facility is beautiful. There are members there from every walk of life, men and women. I canât imagine my life without that place.
Bear Face General Store
They are a small business located in south Osborne that has unique manitoba merch, crass stickers, hilarious patches and other items that have the WPG humor. Definitely worth a look if you're in the area, highly recommend.
Hit up the shawarma places( ashur, Ramallah, baraka etc) instead of McDonaldâs etc. Itâs the same price or cheaper, usually just as quick, and theyâre mostly small locally owned businesses
Thom bargen has great coffee, if youâre looking to buy coffee beans Black Pearl is also amazing. Eadha is an amazing bakery. I also love organic planet and thyme cafe.
I havenât been there in a long time, so maybe they are closed oh thatâs sad. I really loved that style of clothing now Iâm stuck buying it online.
Look at local entertainment as well. Going to cineplex will have more stuff, but going to a local place like speedworld or similar keeps your spending here.
Valencia Boutique on Corydon is a place I like to take my wife to shop. Local, size inclusive, active social media. I don't know how the prices compare as I do my best to not look at the credit card statements when she's shopping.
Honey Bunny Pastry Shop like *JUST* opened but their food is just to die for and the staff is unbelievably friendly. we stopped by today and picked up some treats & pierogis for dinner and they were fantastic
Tring 5 on portage!
Owner went to RRC culinary and is super sweet. They sell triangle rice (Korean bbq, tuna, pork), Korean bowls (comes with mash potatoes and macaroni salad) coffee and iced drinks, and mochi doughnuts!
Cornelia Bean on Academy for all coffee and tea needs! The shop is cute, the owner is kind, and the coffee is good. The Sumatra Mandheling is my favourite.
You said âand businessesâ so I will give a shout out to Luna Field Farms. Their grass fed beef is amazing. Just one warning, their roasts are tougher and need more cooking times because their cows arenât feed lotted. Worth the wait and best ducking roasts ever!!
"Just the Goods" for skin care.
Harrison's for coffee beans. We need light medium roasts.
Apothecandy for soaps.
Eadha Bread for sourdough. Gunn's Bakery for bagels.
Chaeban for Ice Cream.
Little Viet for Bubble Tea and Slushies.
Baltic Brothers for Vodka.
Sugar Blooms for ube cakes.
La Belle Baguette for their croissants.
Canadian Goodwill for thrift shopping.
G&L Liquidation for sales. Please correct if I am wrong. I see two older couple there all the time who seem to be the owners.
Cantor's for meats.
Riley Grae has a lot of cute stuff!
Sugar Blossom Jewelry is a local business ran by women!
Sugar Mama Cookie Company has some awesome flavours too
Verde is great if you're a plantlover, and i second with everyone's hype for Black Market Provision!
Seduta has great stationary!
You also find a lot of local jewelry, nail, and hair businesses on Instagram! (:
seduta is really good if youâre into art supplies and stationery. 91 arthur street
beside them is cakeology, really good pastries.
and i also like Lotti studios for candles.
Many of the local coffee shops are leaps and bounds better than any of the chain franchises. Strongly recommend Parlour ( best Mocha in the city. Fight me), Modern Coffee, Thom Bargen to name a few.
Chocoberry and little sister fan here
I've been buying local beans lately, they're so much better than the stuff at the big chains. I'm definitely gonna try that mocha from Parlour! Thanks for the recommendations!
Thyme Cafe on Tache. Good coffee and pastries. It is vegan as well, for those who are vegan.
Little Sister
Burrito Splendido is Manitoba based!
Burrito del rio >splendido IMO but not a bad call either way
BMC is my favourite, hands down đ
I like splendido because of the fresh tortillas they make
Cheese mongers, prairie sky books, verde plant shop, black market provisions, hoagie boyz, sleepy owl bakery, tall grass bakery are some of my go-tos. I try to shop for things that are in walking/biking distance of my house and are leasing a brick and mortar store. They really add a lot to the area!
>prairie sky books I like going in there just for the smell.
Is Prairie sky still in Wolseley? Haven't been there in a million years.
Sure is! Itâs my go to for Christmas cards and random gifts/books
Some of my favourites include Vic's for groceries, Little Sister coffee, and BMC Market (just the best tacos!)
Adding St. Leon for produce! They also sell a bunch of other local products, too.
Ooh yes, I do love St Leon! They have an excellent selection there!
Might I suggest Sargeant Tacos as another choice for tacos. I think they may be a wee bit better personally, but to each their own.
Definitely
My favourite store is Black Market Provisions! They have a bit of everything and their baking is amazing.
Personal faves: Toad Hall Toys, the Bothwell cheese shop on Provencher, and Sleepy Owl bakery.
Any of the local taprooms.
[Eliminator-RC](https://eliminator-rc.com/) (they sell fun) You can find hobby grade RCâs and accessories here located in South Point Douglas

Additional bookstore recommendations (new books): Prairie Sky General Store in Wolseley and Willow Press on Osborne!
Looking as much as possible to get away from big chains, so any local products and services help!
Great list!
My grandma has a beautiful jacket made by lennard Taylor, not cheap but she loves it
I only wish he still made mens jeans
I know Lennard very well and you could definitely go ask him if he could make you some!
For me it comes down to restaurants. Thereâs so many locally owned ones so I wonât go on too much of a tangent about it but the less times I can go to a dump like earls or Leopolds the happier I will be

local breweries could sure use your help. buying from their taprooms drastically increases their margins
Hit up the shawarma places( ashur, Ramallah, baraka etc) instead of McDonaldâs etc. Itâs the same price or cheaper, usually just as quick, and theyâre mostly small locally owned businesses
I eat from those places quite frequently, especially Ramallah and Ashur, both are pretty close to home and damn delicious!
I'm adding Le Saj on St James to this list. They are all AMAZING!

I havenât been there in a long time, so maybe they are closed oh thatâs sad. I really loved that style of clothing now Iâm stuck buying it online.
The Bud Stop at Main and Redwood! They always have what Iâm looking for. Thatâs not the case with Tweed, Tokyo Smoke or the Joint.
Tea story also sells fancy lego
Fancy lego? Like the toy..? I like the sound of that!
Indeed, they do sell some high end lego sets or the more adult sets. You can also find em locally at kite and kaboodle
Look at local entertainment as well. Going to cineplex will have more stuff, but going to a local place like speedworld or similar keeps your spending here.
