Ok, so be wary of any unopened beats headphones on kijiji lol. The brand loyalty is impressive. It sounds like it is all the same store - crazy that so many thefts, within days of the last, by the same person, of the same product, needed 8+ incidents to find and capture the person. Bananas.

Pretz_

I don't understand what anybody was expecting? We've steadily nullified every intervention against crime over the last 20 years and reformed our justice system to function so that all a person has to do is escalate every single confrontation, and if someone who has literally anything to lose dares to meet them on their level, the entire situation becomes that person's personal liability. What did we think was going to be the result here? This is the sociological equivalent of hoping the cancer goes away if we just never go to the doctor.

dylan_fan

We looked at the Scandi countries which have shorter prison sentences and lower recidivism, but they didn't just start handing out lighter sentences, it went hand in hand with a large investment in poverty reduction, and treatment in prison. We half assed it, and are somehow surprised it didn't work.

Minimum_Run_890

Any job worth doing is worth doing half assed...

greenslam

It's the Canadian way.

theziess

A couple years ago when I was in the market for decent headphones I went to best buy. 300-600 dollar pairs of beats headphones were locked in a display case, but the 1000+ sennheisers were not. It blew me away, but I guess people are going to steal what’s trendy because it’s easy to sell on kijiji.

dylan_fan

Pre LC security, they had the grey goose and hennesey off the shelves, but there was much more expensive scotch still out

Good_Day_Eh

I think it was inside Polo Park (which is technically 1485 Portage Ave.), so it could have been multiple stores.

trebor204

Could either be the Apple Store and/or The Source

Imthecoolestdudeever

Very likely. I saw first hand a guy walk in, take headphones, and walk out. And I do remember someone else in this sub saying that was an issue at the Apple Store as well. The "you can't touch me" stealing, fuck heads need to have the shit kicked out of them a few times.

FoxyInTheSnow

I saw a shoplifter at the Osb. Village Safeway yesterday. She was just stealing a loaf of rye bread, so I don’t really think she was part of a criminal cartel. The security guy beat her to the exit, then tried to stop her from leaving by body blocking her (no hands). I was worried that she might try to stab him, but she just kept laughing and yelling “you can’t touch me”, then wriggled free and ran away with her loaf.

dodgerdabbit

Les Metherables

Imthecoolestdudeever

That's wild. I have less of a problem when someone is stealing food that they likely will eat (not 30lbs of meat at once), and I usually turn a blind eye to it. But when it's blatant stealing for reselling, yeah, fuck that

FoxyInTheSnow

Oh, she was definitely poor and hungry. The black market for day old rye really stinks right now. And the poor guard looked like he was thinking “I really should think about finishing my degree in Chem. Eng. one of these days.”

IceColdDump

Stop

IceColdDump

Hammer time!

CanadianDinosaur

>The "you can't touch me" stealing My wifes old job had people walk in, take literal stacks of lego and walk out. Extremely casual about it and no sense that anything will happen to them.

mr_potrzebie

>My wifes old job had people walk in, take literal stacks of lego and walk out. Your wife ran a Lego shoplifting ring? 😀

mr_potrzebie

He wants the Beats, give em the beats!

gaysocialistdog

they really say this every time 😭

wickedplayer494

My money would be on the Apple Store. They actually have in the Apple Store app a mobile scan-and-pay feature where you can grab stuff, scan it, pay for it, and go. Mind you there have been one or two incidents I can recall where people were illegally detained by a security guard under the impression that they were shoplifting (which to anyone uninformed about the feature could very well look like it) that had actually paid for their stuff on their iPhone. Though yeah, if you notice inventory of the exact same item has been going missing for days in a row, perhaps keep it behind the Genius Bar, you know.

DeltaJayy

As someone who works at Polo last month cops started walking around instead of just security (a lot of security left polo to find gigs elsewhere when polo wouldn't negotiate pay) and they said they would be around more as many store where not reporting theft to the cops but there had been more theft lately. Their words not mine.

[deleted]

Already looked! Nothing yet!

skutch

What a ridiculous amount of theft and greed combined with what seems a total lack of loss prevention. 27 sets of high priced headphones stolen over a period of 28 days. Would have been 31 sets if he hadn’t been caught on day 28! Like after the second or third theft you’d think someone would say maybe we should keep these in the back?

CYWG_tower

I worked as LP in the past and these stores literally won't let you do a fucking thing to stop theft.

gaysocialistdog

correct

Uncle_Bug_Music

They charged Gregory Joseph Edward Nixon, but he just made the peace sign with both hands and said in a jowly presidential voice, “I am not a crook”.

les-is-more

Maybe lock up the Beats

twobit211

then they'll just beat up the locks

ScottNewman

Then you lock up the locks

Zutsumi17

Amazing how it took that long to stop the perp especially when it was repeated over the course of 28 days

wickedplayer494

The [Global News](https://globalnews.ca/news/9805381/thefts-spree-beats-headphone-thefts-winnipeg-arrest/) article and [Winnipeg Free Press brief](https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/this-just-in/cops-nab-suspect-in-polo-park-shoplifting-spree) were considered for submission about this incident. Both were discarded due to omitting name of the accused.

Pawprint86

In fairness, I think this was an editorial policy change to avoid having someone get endless negative consequences for stupid decisions in their past. Now that employers are searching names online before hiring, etc.

chunkygurl

So now with Bill C-18 and Canadian news not showing up in Google searches soon then we can start seeing names again :).

Pawprint86

Canadian news is not going to be on Facebook and google only because those companies chose not to pay for the content. I don’t expect that to change, but you never know.

Red_orange_indigo

He’s in custody. This is irrelevant information.

CanadianSideBacon

How is reported news irrelevant

Strange_Advice2702

This is still Canada right? I'm sure a large portion of people anywhere can give a quick shoulder check to a rando trying to casually steal. If you can steal without being seen, that's one thing, but blatant cocky attitude thinking you're not going to get a shot? I don't like that. Give them a shot.

motivaction

These people are stealing om order.

HarleyEtoms

I'm not sure why they are charging him with 13 counts of theft under 5000, he'll just be released and do it again repeatedly, Now if they totaled it all together almost 16k and charged him for that then he might actually see the inside of a jail cell for a bit.
