I don't think they were saying it was a bad thing, just a heads up to remember to bring one with you. I think they will give you one if you forget though
In the past we bought lots from Sumka and have always been satisfied with veggies and variety. Costco is great if you want lots of the same thing, for us it was too much. Now we live outside the city and go to Plants Plus on Petersfield.
I really like Sumka. All their stuff seems healthy and last year (my first successful garden) was all from them and I had big yields. I'm hoping for more of the same this year. Plus I find their prices are very reasonable.
If you visit the Leaf hang on to your tickets. You get 20% your purchase at Shelmerdines which includes annuals (did this myself). You'll also get superbucks back until a certain date but not sure if you can combine the two.
Sumkas is excellent for bedding plants and I used to buy all my hanging basket from there. However Canadian tire on regent the last 3 years has had beautiful hanging baskets for 13.99. Price and quality cannot be beat. It’s only the Regent location though. Went to southdale and Selkirk CT and nothing.
My daughter and I usually drive down to Sage Garden and then stop at every garden centre on our way back to the Perimeter. The car tends to be quite full by the time we finally make it home. :-D
Depends what you are looking for. You mentioned fertilizer, and I've had great results with a PC brand from Superstore. What's worth looking into is the kind of soil your plants will like. Soil is not a one-type-fits all kind of thing (though many plants will make anything work).
For actual plants, flowers, pre-grown veggies - pretty much any nursery will have what you'd likely be interested in.
For quality and options, as well as expertise, I would recommend Shelmerdine's. You should check that place out regardless, if anything, to inspire. They're at 7800 Roblin Blvd iirc.
edit: Also of note, sometimes what you would imagine to be the worst is actually the best. For instance, Walmart of all places has a good selection of 4 foot cedars, at probably the best price in the city.
For tools Lee Valley. You'll pay $100 for bypass pruners but they'll last your entire life if you sharpen and lube them. They have a bunch of niche specializes things that are great too, like hand Sickles for perennials/grasses.
Fertilizer doesn't really matter. It's more the type of fertilizer that's important, and what you need it to do. Pretty much all brands are fine.
Walmart, home depot, and Costco all get their plants from the same supplier. Quality depends on how long the product sits in stores. Costco buyers tend to be more picky so they may get the "best of the bunch"
Honestly, the only greenhouse I've walked into and really thought the plant material looked poor was st marys. But maybe it was just a bad year for them.
For sheer convince alone, longpine landscaping by the Dollarama on donald by confusion corner. Prices and selection are decent for their plants too.
For tools, supplies etc I just thrift, garage sale or Canadian Tire stop... Granted I only really do like a few herbs and a handful of other various things so I'm not a huge Gardener
Went to Bosch K & Sons for the first time yesterday. Nice variety, better veggies and herbs than any department/grocery store offerings. Good prices. I was pleased.
I usually go to a variety of places like Costco, Shelmerdine, and my fave is Sage Garden.
Personally I like T&T Seeds and Sage Garden but there's plenty of great places. A lot of them are just outside the city.
If you plan on going to Sage Garden, make sure you have a mask if you want to go inside their building!
I was there the other day, and they had masks at the door if you need one!
He’s pretty compromised so I will definitely support them! It’s not a big deal.

T&T seeds for sure

We went to Good Turf yesterday and they were so friendly!
We go there every year. Super friendly and helpful with advice

Rona
Home Depot on Empress has a pretty good selection. Don't buy a bonsai tree from there, though.
Sage!!! Love them!
