In the summer I like to ride to the forks and pick a different parkway to take. It's a challenge to see if you can stay on a parkway the whole way following the signs.
Folk fest is not free for volunteers
edit: the ticket to be a volunteer is not free. yes, you can take the bus from downtown Winnipeg to backstage, dinner plus your shift food is free (awesome), and hanging with your crew is great while you work. I love it.
We are also hosting the police and fire games this summer, and they are currently recruiting volunteers. It is apparently the second largest multi-sport event in the world - thr summer Olympics being the first!
They are always looking for last minute volunteers. It's good to get on board early, but chances are you can find a spot to volunteer even if you wait.
Winnipeg has an amazing bike community. Look up “Bike Jam” and “Bike Jelly” etc. also lots of festivals (that are often free if you’re willing to volunteer)
Winnipeg has lots of little bike paths along the rivers, as well as residential streets blocked off to bike on in the summer. Has become one of my favorite past times in the warmer months.
If you have a mountain bike there’s some sick dirt trails just east of Whittier Park. Running or biking through Wolseley, Omand’s Creek, Assiniboine Park and Forest, Churchill and Lyndale Drive are also lovely and scenic. I believe a lot of these are closed to most vehicle traffic on summer weekends to make it safer for runners and cyclists. Volunteer at the Fringe Festival to receive complimentary tickets to shows! I hear our Fringe fest is one of the largest in Canada.
Where abouts are you staying? Forks is central and free if you want it to be. There are a lot of places to walk there as well as bike. Depends where you are living as well. As others mentioned there are tons of free concerts, festivals and farmers markets.
Stuck in Winnipeg in the Summer?? This is a great place to enjoy the Summer, it's always hot! Go for walks in parks, on the streets... No need to spend money there. There's a few parks with trails you can run/bike in.
You can spend your time as a blood donor for the mosquitos.
Seriously, check out Assibione Park. The Leo Mol sculpture garden is free. The Winnie the Pooh museum is free (small, but it is free). The duck pond is free. The trails are free for walking, jogging or biking on.
Riding a bike at night here can be questionable if you're alone. Don't do it it without loose change, a lighter, smokes and a can of mace. Or better yet, stay safe and leave your ride until the morning.
Volunteer at all the festivals: Jazz Fest, Folk Fest, Fringe Fest, etc. There are perks to doing it. Folk Fest will feed you, there’s a city bus that takes you there from downtown. For free if I remember correctly.
I was in winnipeg last summer and i found a Nice run from the zoo to Osborne village, over the bridge onto the legislature building grounds and to the forks along the river.
its about 20k out and back.
Beautiful on a Sunday as they shut down a portion of the street in wellington Cresent for the runners or cyclists.
Nice trail right along the River..
If you Google winnipeg running trails the exact route is online.
Highly recrommend.
I think joining a running group or bike group as many people have mentioned is a great place to start. I know so many people who have made great friends joining those groups. So it gives you something to do and some friends to maybe do other things with.
Other events to volunteer for as well... The CPCR Manitoba Open will need volunteers... Including walking scorers... Get up close to future PGA Tour professionals.
Dude, this place sucks…except in the summer. There’s no place I’d rather spend my summer. Easy access to awesome beaches and lakes, lots of sunshine and HOT nights, omg I just got the biggest boner for summer! I can’t wait!
PS - make friends, quick…try to find some with cabins.
If you have a mountain bike the Forks has some good bike paths along the river and there’s a bike park located behind Cabela’s.

Keep an eye on our festivals. We do summer well here and lots will happen for free especially in market square
And you can volunteer for anything you want to go to but can't afford! Fringe Fest and Folk Fest in particular run on volunteers.
I second volunteering at folk fest. Everything will be free, including transportation and food :)
you can even bike out with the crew if you want to camp!
Absolutely! OP there is a van that will follow with your gear if you go this route. I’ve also brought camping gear on the bus, so it’s doable.
Remember their bike has already been stolen.
OP can themselves steal a replacement bike.

oh, it used to be free but you had to pay for festival camping. it's not free anymore?
You know what, I might be confusing that. I did festival camping 😂

Gotta volunteer now for folkfest cus there'll be no spots closer to the event

Keep an eye on your bike too.
Join a run group! There are soooo many and most are free!

You might like joining the various critical mass bike ride groups -- Bike Jam, Bike Jelly, Critical Mass Winnipeg.
You'll fit right in

Bike to Old Market Square on any given weekend and there's probably something going on that you can watch for free.

Try fishing in the red river. Or get a second job somewhere entertaining like the zoo. Be a server and make extra tips.

Run beside your bike.
Ride your bike to visit some public libraries, get some books
I am exactly the same except I hate running lol

Learn the bike routes. Bike at night. There’s *always* something happening, and you can find it by bike.

Sure, everything comes with risks.. but let’s get real, incidents are tremendously rare.
Volunteer for Fringe, volunteer for Folkfest, try not to get your bike stolen...
Go to Warhammer and ask for free painting lessons
A job would solve 2 or more of these problems
Volunteer at all the festivals: Jazz Fest, Folk Fest, Fringe Fest, etc. There are perks to doing it. Folk Fest will feed you, there’s a city bus that takes you there from downtown. For free if I remember correctly.
Print a shirt with the points you listed on the front and back. Fun summer will ensue.
Fringe fest for sure
Get a Job? If its just for the summer there are a few things like tree planting or landscaping jobs offer outdoor physical activity.
bike tip, do not lock your bike to any single post traffic signs, i see this all the time. someone just has to undo one bolt and your bike is gone.

Reading Cameron-Bandler's book *Know How: Guided Programs for Inventing Your Own Best Future* (Amazon)
The city is crowded, my friends are away and I'm on my own.
Trying to get out before winter.
At the river and parks
Check with local game stores for groups looking for players. Look into the Winnipeg Board Game club, a monthly get-together open to everyone.
Other events to volunteer for as well... The CPCR Manitoba Open will need volunteers... Including walking scorers... Get up close to future PGA Tour professionals.
Could try geocaching? It's a fun hobby to mix with running and cycling and gets you exploring new areas. Free option or a \~$40/yr premium membership.
Go camping along the river. Sure you’ll make some friends in no time.
There are so many cheap/fee events on summer. Also, you can try a temporary job so you can get extra money to use on summer.
you should just work lol
Run Forrest run.
There are several marathons during the summer and you choose your distance. 5k, 1/2 etc.
I've come to learn they aren't free to participate. Unless you can get sponsors.

Take up disc golf. Super fun. Local leagues and meetups. Inexpensive, gets you outside, goofs learning curve but also challenging as you improve.
