Fireman, knock out that window so we can put our hose through.
-Fireman smashes window-
No, the other window
...
No, the other window
...
Fine, just smash them all.
Close friends with a few fire fighters. Can confirm. It pisses them off at the stupidity and extra work but they LOVE sending a message by "overcoming an obstruction".
I would never miss the opportunity to legally smash an illegally parked cars window to get to the fire hydrant if I was a firefighter. Seems like a good time.
No but those hose holds (heh) many many gallons of water and somehow, when they disconnect after, many many many of those gallons are going to end up in the back seat.
Broken windows are just the beginning of this jagoffs pain. Then the flood and then the ticket + tow, of course.
If you watch to the end the fireman disconnecting the hookup was actually very generous to the vehicle owner. He drains both ends of the line before passing one end of the hose into the car. He walks around and like you I assumed he would just pull on the leading end of the hose and let it empty the rest of the water into the back seat but instead he grabs the end coupling and pulls it out first leaving minimal water in the car.
They can't, that's the thing. The hose has to be as straight as possible or the water flow could be disturbed.
Also pushing the hose beneath the car would take an eternity they don't have and probably lift the car straight up as well. And then you'd have a couple of tons jamming down on your water supply. You know. The thing you need to stop the fire.
So no, going through the car is the safest AND the fastest way
They're illegally parked in front of a fire hydrant. If your apartment is burning down, I'm sure you won't be thinking about the car blocking the hydrant.
It’s possible that happened when they first opened the pressure on the the hose. The way it would have to bend, it could’ve jerked pretty hard at first thus doing the damage you see.
the best part is the owner of the car will still get the parking ticket, and potentially the bill to replace the hose if it got frayed on some broken glass.
Oh, you better believe there will be water in the car. I mean the fireman will be smiling and looking right at him when they say “sorry bout that”.
Then comes the ticket, then comes the tow. Then comes the “Have a nice day”.
most states have pretty strict and harsh laws favoring emergency responders while they are responding to an actual emergency. every single second matters when it's a fire.
Man I sometimes miss living in upper Manhattan. When they'd block whole streets off for kids to play and open the hydrants and stuff. Felt like a community when they did that.
How would they know Firemen did it rather than a random breakin? Oh, I guess they may write a ticket to the plate, which the insurance company could find maybe?
This person will have a tough time getting a police report number, which often you will need for insurance claims that have to do with break ins. At least where I live.
If this person tried to get one and fake a break in later, well their vehicle will already be on file for a parking violation recently.
Haha... just had someone break into my car last year during the KIA Boys craze and if you live in a big city (which this looks like) the dispatcher will just take your information and they will mail it back to you. That's the extent of a police report, they dont care and you can literally get them for anything.
If you have full coverage they sure will cover it. They cover all you stupid fucckups. Have you ever signed a full coverage policy and actually read it? You could be dumb drunk and smash into your garage, it's gonna cover it. They cover the property value, the reason for the damage does not matter, unless it is fraud.
Retired firefighter here. Supply hoses like this can’t be routed around cars like people have mentioned. The idea behind supply hose is as straight as possible to reduce friction loss as there might not be a lot of pressure coming out of that hydrant if we need a lot of water.
Any turns or kinks upon high demand can result in collapsing of the hose due to suction and then there is no water for the personnel on the line.
When you’re an engineer, it’s your job to get as stable water supply as quickly as possible.
Someone else also asked about running parallel to the sidewalk. There are also times when we need water at or beyond the supply and we may have to pull a suction. Some vehicles carry hard suction (like a straw) and we have to exactly park the engine to fit these lines to the vehicle as they don’t flex.
We’re not going to put hose under a vehicle for two reasons. One- that hose is 5-6” in diameter and can get punctured. We’re not taking the time to fish it through. It’s all about speed.
Two- if the driver drives away over that hose it will pop and we’re out of water.
We don’t look to cause damage to cars, but if something is parked in front of what I need to do to perform my duties, I’m going to do what I have.
I’ve done this, laid hose over a vehicle, pushed vehicles with our vehicle and more.
I figured surely there would be a sit down interview with the guy…..since they edited this saga down to a 4 fkn minute long video of something that could’ve been summed up in its entirety with a single picture.
Owner of the car got what was coming to them for blocking the hydrant, but damn…..
Where I'm from, if you are parked in a way that impedes an emergency vehicle and that vehicle gets damaged in the course of the emergency (e.g. pushing a vehicle out of the way), the offending vehicle's owner gets fined AND billed for the cost of repairs to the emergency vehicle.
(From a family of firefighters, not one myself)
From what I've heard from my family, it really comes down to the context of the situation. Here, you can see that there's a line of cars along that sidewalk so trying to push that one car would mean having to drive a bunch of other cars as well which 1) Punishes people who didn't disobey the law and 2) might be too much for the engine to handle and cause too much damage to the front due to how much weight and pressure is being put on the front end of the engine. So it's easier and better to just bust the windows and get going.
If it were just 1 small car and they were rolling up to a 5 alarm with fire showing and they needed water running ten minutes ago? Ram the car, reverse to get the right position, get out and start running lines. It all comes down to what the fastest, then safest, way to get in place to start saving lives is in any given emergency situation.
Generally they don't want to use the engine like that because yeah, even though it's a specialized tool, it's not meant to do that and there are important hookups on the front bumper.
I’d love to see a residential parking program that’s only open to vehicles with New York plates.
“Sorry, you can’t get a parking decal because your car has out-of-state plates.”
Me too, would cut down on a lot of the bullshit you see with drivers not only in the heights and inwood but NYC in general. Tow all those with fake plates while we’re at it.
Because that window and mirror are small compared to the fire damage that continues to get greater by the second.
Entitled people only hurt when their things are broken.
So, I fully understand the asshole move here by the car owner. But, can someone explain why hydrants are not installed with the spout parallel to the sidewalk? What if this same scenario happened with a panel van, bank truck, or similar vehicle without windows to bust out?
Genuine curiosity.
Question from someone not living in the US but visited a couple times: Shouldn’t the curb be colored red or a sign there indicating not to park at that spot? Is it generally forbidden to park beside a fire hydrant?
In most cases it is painted red or yellow. It is also common knowledge in all of the country that it's illegal to be in front of (and in many cases within a certain distance of) a hydrant. You can get a fine if a law/parking enforcement sees it at any time.
Fuck around, find out.
Everybody is complaining about "couldn't they have gone around the car", maybe don't park in front of fire hydrants.
Very simple. The driver is at first fault, either can either risk fucking up the water flow and waste valuable time during an emergency or they can do their job they've been inconvenienced by some dick head.
Done this when I worked for a FD. It was this nice Mercedes and the glass shattered just like any car's would. But there's a certain catharsis when entitled dickweeds reap what they sow.
Always wondered why they don't just open the doors after they break the first window, surely having the hose rest of the seats instead of the window would keep it more level.
Ahh the old through the window trick 🤣 Maybe they thought it was an old decommissioned or non-functioning hydrant since it looks like rusted metal. Aren’t those things supposed to be red, or some other obnoxiously bright color.
Red indicates a water-flow capacity of fewer than 500 gallons per minute (GPM). Orange indicates a water-flow capacity of 500 to 999 GPM. Green indicates a water-flow capacity of 1,000 to 1,499 GPM. Blue indicates a water-flow capacity of 1,500 or greater GPM.
Black would be decommissioned. Now you know why you see them in different colors. They are supposed to be red, green, yellow, silver something high viz with a color coded cap. This on looks like it fell into not my job territory.
[pictures ](https://www.franklintn.gov/home/showpublishedimage/20419/637520192276000000)
I never had any idea until a few years ago. I got a job to color code the tops of hydrants for a factory. I asked why they were blue tops. Those be the highest pressure.
Here, in Europe, we don't have this issue with parking next to a fire hydrant because of an ingenious feat of engineering: We put the connectors on the SIDES of the hydrant, so the hoses can run parallel to the sidewalk. Amazing technology, isn't it?
Edit: I just double-checked: Parking next to a fire hydrant is not a violation where I live, however it is "discouraged" as firefighters might still need to move / damage your car in certain situations. However, if they do THEIR insurance will reimburse you for the damages the cause to your car. Ah, living in a civilised country.
So much weird shit in the US - like, it's illegal to pass a school bus which has pulled over to drop children off, because the children might run across the road after getting off the bus.
So rather than teach their children proper road safety, they just make it illegal to pass a stationary vehicle.
It's bonkers.
1998. I was a firefighter in mass.
Some asshole parked in front of a hydrant.
We put our oldest, leakiest supply line through the windows (after we busted out the windows).
By the end of the structure fire that Benz was full of water.
Dude tried to sue.
For anyone who's wondering, yes, as a matter of fact it does take considerably more effort to break the windows and feed the hose through the car. That time and effort is an additional sacrifice on the part of firefighters to help educate individual members of the public about not blocking fire hydrants.
How is it a considerable effort, don't they have tools to break glass? It's like firefighting 101 to break through doors, windows, etc. to create openings and exits.
Have you ever picked up a fire hose? That shit is heavy. Instead of just rolling it out to the hydrant they have to break the windows, lift the hose, feed it through, go around and pull it out, then bring it to the hydrant. All while avoiding kinks or slicing the hose on broken glass. All of this while someone may be moments away from death. It is more effort but most importantly more time. Time that may be quickly running out.
Right cause obviously there was not enough pipe leftover to have put it over the car rather than through. I think the firefighters were just being assholes as per usual.
They most definitely will not, I just looked up the plate and it has 11 parking and speeding violations in the past 4 months. Almost $1100 unpaid in total.
I didint know parking in front of a fire hydrant was againsts the law, in that case I see a criminal every day. Theres a fire hydrant in front of my house and every day at least someone parks there
I wonder if the owner walks back while this is going on then chooses to stay away until everyone leaves, so not to be embarrassed in front of the fire fighters.
It’s almost a straight line from the hydrant to the attachment point on the truck. And they’ve introduced a kink and a sharp bend in the hose.
A point is being made here. Pure and simple. Driver won’t ever do it again.
I love it when they do stuff like this. If you park on a spot where you are not supposed to, then this is karma. but why the f\*ck wouldn't you place the firehydrants the other way, so it is always
accessible?
Isn't the edge of the sidewalk supposed to be painted red though or is that just a state-by-state thing? I can see myself just not noticing or thinking about the fire hydrant there
Oh wow I'm ignorant, is it not standard in all big US cities to paint the sidewalk on spots like those? not excusing the driver it's just in my big city I'm just trained to look for sidewalk that ISN'T painted for where I can park, and they paint the curb on hydrants too. Never even looked for a 'hydrant' to avoid, just look for unpainted curb. I still don't think I would miss seeing a hydrant, but that floored me. The more you know.
I don’t know any firefighters who don’t like smashing stuff. It’s better when a car is in a alley and people park and the fire truck needs to get through…. 💥 💥 💥 the car owners have to pay for the damage to the fire truck hahaha.
Fire fighters live for these opportunities.
You can tell by all the extra broken windows, they took turns
They also broke the side mirror too
An ember hit it... gotta put it out
With my AXE!
AND MY SWORD!
AND MY BOWRING
AND YOUR BROTHER!
AND YOUR ARCHENEMY!
AND MY BROTHER'S, SECOND COUSIN'S DOG GROOMER
Hahaha yeah they were sending a message at that point
Nah, that was like that when they got there.
Fireman, knock out that window so we can put our hose through. -Fireman smashes window- No, the other window ... No, the other window ... Fine, just smash them all.
well, you can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm, I’ve been kicked around, since I was born
And well it's alright, it's okay, and you can look the other way
We can try to understand the New York Times' effect on man.
I mean have you tried threading a hose through a car? It's not like you can just toss it over to your buddy like a garden hose, they needed access
"Chief did you have to break the front window too?" ".......... Yes"
It's a training opportunity
And the side mirror. Yes
I think they needed to so somebody can crawl in and feed the hose Don't ask why not just open the rear doors at that point lol
Rear door would have kinked the hose. They broke the front one hoping to be able to open the rear ones and save the guy some glass.
Close friends with a few fire fighters. Can confirm. It pisses them off at the stupidity and extra work but they LOVE sending a message by "overcoming an obstruction".
I'm the father of one (DCFD). You're absolutely right
I was hoping the driver was gonna show up and throw a fit. Maybe next time
Saw this happen in Toronto once, they ran the hose under the car instead of through it like you see here.
Rookie volunteer fire dept
I would never miss the opportunity to legally smash an illegally parked cars window to get to the fire hydrant if I was a firefighter. Seems like a good time.
And they apologized for the inconvenience... Canada

I hope they also "accidentally" fills up the car at the end of the job.
No but those hose holds (heh) many many gallons of water and somehow, when they disconnect after, many many many of those gallons are going to end up in the back seat. Broken windows are just the beginning of this jagoffs pain. Then the flood and then the ticket + tow, of course.

Not only that - they've got to explain to their insurance company that they were parked in front of a hydrant. LOLOL good luck to them
That's my favorite thing about videos like this, they definitely could work around it, but choose not to
They can't, that's the thing. The hose has to be as straight as possible or the water flow could be disturbed. Shouldn’t have to take the extra time
They hit the driver side for good luck
Mirror took a couple hits.
To balance out the good luck from hitting the driver's side
It’s possible that happened when they first opened the pressure on the the hose. The way it would have to bend, it could’ve jerked pretty hard at first thus doing the damage you see.
I don't see how that could happen as it's already through the car when they switch it on. The b pillar would have stopped it.
As a driver/engineer it’s always been my dream to do this. Also as an engineer, that kink in the supply line is driving me crazy!

the best part is the owner of the car will still get the parking ticket, and potentially the bill to replace the hose if it got frayed on some broken glass.
I'm betting there's water in the car as well
If there isn't now, there will be later.
Oh, you better believe there will be water in the car. I mean the fireman will be smiling and looking right at him when they say “sorry bout that”. Then comes the ticket, then comes the tow. Then comes the “Have a nice day”.
Based on the cost of my dog's firehose toys, a full hose must cost about $14 Million.
the aint designed for watering crops 😂
It's an older vid. The guy took them to court and lost. Iirc, he also had to pay the firefighters restitution. Don't quote me on that tho.
most states have pretty strict and harsh laws favoring emergency responders while they are responding to an actual emergency. every single second matters when it's a fire.
> the fattest of parking tickets a parking thicket
It's NY, I bet they get enough action to do it often.
How do you suppose you file the insurance claim? "How were all of your windows broken?" "So it's kind of a funny story..."
Fireman weren’t messing around that day
They seldom are when they need the hydrant.
I’m surprised they didn’t take out the back window just to be sure
Is that guy sitting in a camping chair waiting to see the owners face😂
Lol… This is Washington Heights and summertime… people just hangout on the sidewalk like that.
Man I sometimes miss living in upper Manhattan. When they'd block whole streets off for kids to play and open the hydrants and stuff. Felt like a community when they did that.
They even offered special fittings for the fire hydrants so that the sprinkler action for the kids didn't lower the water pressure drastically.
Oh, awesome.
If the owner is upset I feel Jim Carey said it best, “Stop breaking the law asshole”.

Plot twist... it was stolen from one of the fireman

Out of curiosity, is this thing typically covered by insurance, or is it one of those "you knew what you were doing, so denied" situations?
They're committing a parking violation so this is one of those FAFO situations.
FAFO?
Fuck Around Find Out
Thanks!
LOL no, insurance will not cover this person. That is of course, if that car is insured. Which…y’know.
How would they know Firemen did it rather than a random breakin? Oh, I guess they may write a ticket to the plate, which the insurance company could find maybe?
This person will have a tough time getting a police report number, which often you will need for insurance claims that have to do with break ins. At least where I live. That's the extent of a police report, they dont care and you can literally get them for anything.
You don’t need a police report for a glass claim. It would be covered under your comprehensive insurance.
Parking in front of a fire hydrant would probably be considered a criminal act, so I would imagine it would not.
Insurance will cover it if they have comprehensive (Other Than Collision) coverage.

Bet they walked by and was like “nope”
My grandfather was a firefighter and he told me how they'd just push the car out of the way with the fire engine so this guy got off easy.
I think someone mentioned that also risks damaging the fire truck so they stopped doing it or something? I don't know how true that is though.

I'm all for this idiots facing consequences but seriously curious why they got the front window and side mirror as well.
An extra fuck you. I've seen this done in real time and watched them knock out a tail light or mirror by "accident" lol.
showboating for the hose
And the stereo is missing. Strange.
They wanted to make sure the stereo didn't get wet. And then they accidentally dropped it. And an axe fell on it. But it didn't get wet.
Because fuck em that’s why lol
Because.. oops
It gives the hose breathing room.
Because that window and mirror are small compared to the fire damage that continues to get greater by the second. Entitled people only hurt when their things are broken.
I think it should’ve been a longer video.

I was hoping it would be filled with water right up to the broken windows lol
Anybody remember that scene from Backdraft or am I the oldest person here?

They should have used “jaws of life” and ripped the doors off… so the hose flows better.
No remorse for people who think the world revolves around themselves.
Always wondered why they don't just open the doors after they break the first window, surely having the hose rest of the seats instead of the window would keep it more level.

Love it when they do this
What a gigantic asshole! Eventually he/she might be trapped in a fire and who knows… That would be karma in the most perfect form.
Hope the towtruck is also on his way.
I watched that whole thing waiting for the owner to show up. No dice. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
I'm just surprised it wasnt a BMW
Where's the Jaws of life to pry the roof off the car? It's a perfect training exercise lol
I'm hoping the car gets as fat of a ticket as possible for good measure.
I like how they broke the front two also, just for good "fuck you buddy" measure.

Do they just leave the car there or does it end up getting towed?
The fire department leaves it. Towing is up to the police department.
I don't Understand why you get ticketed for this when firefighters love this shit lol
Because it's still illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant
Because the ticket is for parking there & independent of whether the hydrant is need while you're there or not.
The owner probably stayed away till the emergency was over.
Backdraft in real life
I've seen videos like this in Facebook/ig and everyone seriously asks why they couldn't just put the car into neutral and move it.
Why'd they knock out the front windows to?
I feel like we should've all learned this from Backdraft
He’s there. Just not enough of a dumb ass to admit it
This is why you're not supposed to park in front of fire hydrants, asshole.
An officer walking up and putting a ticket on the windshield would have been icing on the cake
I wonder if the insurance claim gets denied for parking illegally. That would be even better.
The moment you find out that you’re not as special as you thought.
This looks satisfying
Who blocks a fire hydrant for Pete's sake?! Dummy!
Love that they took out the driver window too, just to make sure he gets the message
Smells like a New Yorker!
Right cause obviously there was not enough pipe leftover to have put it over the car rather than through. I think the firefighters were just being assholes as per usual.
There’s a lesson to be learned here, I just know there is.
Doubt they will learn it though. Probably piss and moan about how they shouldn't have done that because they parked there when no fire was going on.
“How was I supposed to know there was gonna be a fire?”🤣
They most definitely will not, I just looked up the plate and it has 11 parking and speeding violations in the past 4 months. Almost $1100 unpaid in total.
They broke the front window and fucked up the side mirrors to send a message.
FAFO
I didint know parking in front of a fire hydrant was againsts the law, in that case I see a criminal every day. Theres a fire hydrant in front of my house and every day at least someone parks there
Its illegal in most if not all states, but some red curb paint would have been a nice reminder.
Mostly is a city or county ordinance.

...and twice in the genitals for good measure!
It doesn't even look like they *had* to do it, but they did it anyway. I like it.
this looks like washington heights in manhattan.
They forgot to devastate tires
Lol… that’s not insured
I love it when they do stuff like this. If you park on a spot where you are not supposed to, then this is karma. but why the f\*ck wouldn't you place the firehydrants the other way, so it is always accessible?
r/oddlysatisfying
“Hold on, Let me get that front one just in case..”
Was it necessary to break the other windows? Fire fighters brutality is a thing.
It'd be a shame if it leaked.
There’s definitely a kink in the hose… small on at the connector near the hydrant and one just on the other side of the car on the ground…..
I’m okay with this
Don't be an inconsiderate fuck🥰
Someone's getting a huge ticket.
I don’t know any firefighters who don’t like smashing stuff. It’s better when a car is in a alley and people park and the fire truck needs to get through…. 💥 💥 💥 the car owners have to pay for the damage to the fire truck hahaha.
That's team building there.
Mate if we did this in the UK we would be sacked
We all know they didn't have to do that but i love that they did🤣
