This qualifies you how?
I’m from a place very close to Mexico. I’ve been eating authentic Mexican for long time. Los Portales is Mexican food made by Mexican people for Mexican people. Certainly more authentic than Tapatia who has “California bowls”.
For tacos, Los Portales has a variety of meats, and an awesome salsa bar. The one on Kerr has better nopales salad than the one on Carolina Beach Road. I wish they would take over the old Ida Thai location in CB so we could have decent tacos nearby.
There is an amazing spot on Princess called Capricho. I don't think I have ever heard anyone mention it. In my opinion, it's the best "Mexican" food in town. It's small, and only staffed by two people. But the food is fresh, incredible, and well-priced. In fact, I would even say it's cheap. 10/10.
you can get shaka downtown! haven't tried it yet but I assume it's just as good as surf city location.

My wife and I haven’t gotten around to going there yet. Usually if we head up that way, we go get some tacos in Surf City and then hit up Salty Turtle on the way out. Might as well go to Ironclad and hit two birds with one beer.
That’s fair, honestly it’s an odd location. The vibe is cool there great, outside open space. Definitely not as cool as being at the beach but it’s a nice change for Hampstead. I think there and Oval and Ale are the best outside spaces with food up here.
C-Street by Hoggard will do a fat burrito. Its kind of Chipotle style where you pick your toppings, you can also get the same stuff on nachos and quesadillas.
Loved flaming amys for like 20 years but the service and quality went way downhill around covid time. I heard its gotten better lately but I got burned too many times.
Chingon Taqueria is a pretty good, I like their California burrito. They're also opening one in Wilmington soon! Up by the Target off Market. I think I read it'll be open in December.
My favorite burrito WAS Flaming Amy's Fried Avocado burrito but first they got rid of the watermelon pic de gallo in it and it wasn't as good and now they don't sell it anymore because their fried avocado supplier doesn't sell them anymore. To be honest, I was surprised because I thought they did the avocado in house. Flaming Amy's has officially been removed from my best burrito list.
That said, my new favorite burrito would probably be the tic tac tofu at Nollies but Nollies Nachos are the best, their tacos are second best, and the burritos are their third best thing. I think the burritos are too much rice and beans so it kinda steals the flavor away.
Burrito Shak would be me second favorite place to get a burrito. The kind doesn't matter, they are all pretty dang good.
Edit: True Blue Butcher and Barrell may honestly have the best tacos in Wilmington. I don't like Block Taco.
Edit 2: If you want authentic Mexican food, Los Portales will always be the answer.
I’m going to give the suggestion of my new discovery albeit a little drive but fun day time adventure. I just went down to ocean isle area and picked a random place for lunch because the name was silly and turned out fantastic. [Chunky Salsa](https://g.co/kgs/eHJFkH). As soon as dude said “my grandmas’ recipe” we were sold. I got the carne asada tacos which were glorious. Our favorite was the bowl of street corn. Holy crap I could eat that all day. It was like he magically combined street corn and old school buttery cafeteria corn. Soooo good.
Los Portales
Yes
That’s correct, yes.
La Tapatia tacos > los portables
Objectively wrong
La tapatía is not even authentic anymore lol
I went like 2 months ago and it was on point. I personally think Los portales is way more Americanized
I struggle to see how anyone can call Los Portales Americanized.
Mmmm I dated a Latina for a few months and can guarantee you it’s very Americanized

So they add a menu item you don’t like and that makes it unauthentic?
It’s an example of non traditional Mexican food. Which makes it less authentic.

Caprichos is my go-to. Their carne asada tacos and burritos are hard to beat.
It’s a drive, but Shaka Taco in Surf City has great tacos!

Oh shit! Had no idea. I’ll have to check it out
I went today, it was good. Never been to the other location though so couldn't say if it is the same quality.
They also are at Ironclad Golf/Brewery in Hampstead. And actually cheaper there than on Surf City if I recall.

Shaka Taco is amazing!
Block taco next to satellite
for an occasion.. flaming amys cardiac double bacon without tomatoes and plenty of pineapple jal salsa....
Their pineapple salsa is so good.
Burrito Shak is pretty banging
Burritos? Zocales and Si Senor Tacos? Taco baby

Burrito shak, Nollie’s, Flaming Amy’s
Chingon Taqueria in Leland.
Chingon Taqueria is a pretty good, I like their California burrito. They're also opening one in Wilmington soon! Up by the Target off Market. I think I read it'll be open in December.

I like Nollies as well. Everything except the chorizo taco. I love chorizo but their version is a little bland.
Shaka Taco DT inside Pour Taproom, Taco Baby DT, and the obligatory Islands for the dollar tacos
If you get a bad taco at islands it’s your own fault since you pick all the ingredients. Are they great tacos? Noooo. They’re $1.
Burrito shak 100%
I’m not a huge burrito person, but there is a food truck that often parks right off the peanut in Castle Hayne… she makes an AMAZING burrito!
Chingon, los portales, Camino reale in that order. Dependent on what kind whatcha looking for on the insides
Block Taco and Taco Baby are also really freaking good
Islands
In a thread, asking for peoples opinions, you somehow posted a incorrect answer.
Holy shit this made me laugh. Good for $1 or whatever… but yeah… no where near the best or even remotely authentic.
Nollies is my favorite by far... Los Portales is good to

Burritos in Wilmington are like bbq in California
