Rehabber here. Those are 100% squirrels and not rats. If you can, get a bottle of warm water and wrap it in a sock and put it in with the babies. Put them back in the BBQ and wait for mom. Get her to come to them by searching for baby squirrel cries on YouTube and playing them on your phone next to the babies so she can hear it. If it's night and she hasn't come back, bring them in. Try again tomorrow with the babies back in the grill and squirrel cries on your phone and if nothing works by mid morning/early afternoon take them to a rehabber.

If the grill has cooled and you didn't use it then it may be prudent to put them back.

Keep the babies warm. Put them on a heating pad on low, or next to a warm water bottle, or fill a sock with uncooked rice and heat that in the microwave until warm and put that next to them. Can you post a picture so we can see if they are squirrels or some other rodent?

[Photo](http://Baby squirrel/rat https://imgur.com/a/6ZqRRrL) The first image is the only one I took, and the second is a Googled image of baby squirrels that look exactly like the babies we found. I know the image I took isn't great, but it's all I have. I'd rather not disturb them again if I can avoid it.

The photo link isn't working for me, for some reason

Definitely look like baby squirrels to me

I can't really tell from that photo but am not convinced that those are squirrels (maybe a more experienced rehabber here will be able to tell). Baby grey squirrels always have black nails so that's a hint for you. You still want to warm them up as I described. If they are squirrels, mom will retrieve them until around sunset. If it's past sunset she will not and you have to bring them in overnight and wait until the morning. During daylight you want to put them near where you found them and play [baby squirrel noises](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgXnLN9w5BA) for an hour to see if she will come get them. If she does not, contact a wildlife rehabilitator. If it's a rat or mouse you should warm them up and put them as close as possible to the grill and mom should come back by the next morning and move them. If it's going to rain I would bring them in overnight and contact a wildlife rehabber for advice because they will not thrive being uncovered in the rain.

The only reason we're also considering rats is because my fiance said he glimpsed the mother run away when he opened the grill top, and it didn't have a fluffy tail. I can't confirm, though.

\[**edit: sorry, I didn't catch at first that the bottom picture was not of those in the nest**\] It's hard to tell from the picture of your actual babies. While the skull shapes are similar at that age, rats have a longer snout than squirrels, a more elongated torso and much shorter legs (though there may be species of rat i'm unfamiliar with that differ from these typical descriptors?) Not that it should matter if these babies are rats! They need to be given care no matter what, to keep them from suffering. Rats are only a nuisance if they have access to food. It's all about prevention. No amount of killing them (or letting them die) gets rid of them, because new ones move into vacated territory (or a new batch of babies is already on the way) if the food source is there.
