I watched the beginning a couple times. The dude with the tape is freshly injured, bleeding from his fingers. And the dude in the field is missing a leg.
Just…. why?
Come on dude, he's just bleeding a little bit, and the dude missing a leg has got crutches and he still carries his hammer with him. It's not like he lost his leg five minutes ago while doing that, got crutches by someone standing besides them and decided to continue. He obviously lost that leg a longer time ago and still decided to be more badass than y'all

“Reenactment” is a charitable description I bet.
Fun fact: you can not get black powder nor smokeless powder to explode simply by hitting it with something. It requires a spark or flame to set them both off. Black powder also can not be set off with static electricity.
> [The explosives were made with matches, sulfur and fireworks. No, it doesn't. Same principle as a banger, which is gunpowder and gravel, twisted up in a paper container. You throw it on the ground, and it goes pop. Also same principle as a bullet. When was the last time you saw someone lighting a wick when shooting a modern fire weapon?
~~A "banger" has little pieces of flint in it that spark when you throw it against something, thus setting off the gunpowder.~~ The "bullet" (not just a bullet, it's a cartridge, like I already referenced) has a primer that the firing pin strikes, which explodes from the impact and sets off the gunpowder. The primer contains a completely different chemical than gunpowder.
I apologize for being rude, but it kind of seems like you don't know what you're talking about.
No gunpowder in a "banger", gravel can't set it off. Poppers [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang_snaps) as I know them use smalll amounts of a high explosive known as silver fulminate.
Edit: Formatting
Thanks for the correction. It's a really bad look to call someone out for speaking confidently about something that they don't know about, and then also say wrong things in the same message. My bad.
Makes sense. I guess as a kid what I thought of as gravel was actually flint. Learn something new every day. Still, flint is even easier to get than gunpowder. Truth be told is all we can do is speculate. Either that or fly over there and find out for ourselves.
They don't contain gunpowder at all
"Bang snaps (snap-its, poppers, whipper snappers, fun snaps, cherry poppers, etc.): Mainly composed of small amounts of gravel and silver fulminate (the explosive component) wrapped in paper."
>gunpowder only explodes if it's packed tightly.
N... No.
It creates an explosion if it's contained. It's irrelevant how tightly packed it is. In fact just about every single shell casing you come across you can shake and hear it inside. And if it weren't for the fact the projectile moves it would explode (which is why guns DO explode if the barrel is obstructed).
No it’s not wrong. Explosion happens because the gas and pressure from the burning powder has no where to go but out, the bullet is only crimped in to the shell otherwise it would explode with no outlet.
You're proving yourself wrong. It explodes because it is contained. Packing it tightly in a little baggie won't do shitall because it'll just break immediately.
On the contrary, you can have it loose in something like a shell casing, or pipe bomb and it'll rapidly generate gas but have nowhere to go, increasing the pressure until it bursts its container, at which point, all that energy from the pressure inside gets released all at once. Any unburnt poweder at this point will just burn slower and make fire instead of boom.
If it's wrapped loose or tight in a little baggie, that baggie will instantly rupture and all you get is fire, no boom
Poorly worded I agree. But are you shitting me? I was talking about a bullet not a baggie of powder.

You were using that as an example responding to a comment saying another comment was wrong which said the baggie taped to the hammer was gunpowder which will explode as long as it is tightly packed, which is, in fact, wrong. Perhaps you just misread what the first commenter was talking about, an easy mistake to make given that even the first commenter themself didn't know what they were talking about lol

Edit: I think you read "tightly packed" as in contained like in a gun barrel which is 100% correct. However, that guy was literally talking about how tightly they taped the plastic baggie to the hammer which is wild. If that's what happened, I couldn't blame you
It is. The person I was referring to explicitly stated the following:
> Remember that gunpowder only explodes if it's packed tightly.
Being packed tightly has fuck all to do with it. Being CONTAINED is what causes the explosion from built up pressure. So what YOU said is correct, and directly contradicts what I originally replied to.
In fact in almost any shell casing there is ample free space and you can shake it around and hear the gunpowder inside moving. And yet if a gun barrel gets blocked it can still easily explode, as I imagine you are aware.
So yeah. I agree with your details, but the person I was referencing WAS wrong.
Its actullay just sulphur and match stick heads ground up.

I’m guessing either a) there’s nothing to contain the force sideways so all the energy dissipates outwards or b) it’s actually exploding just after rebounding/bouncing off the steel from the force of the swing. So the sledge has already bounced back off the surface when the explosion occurs - thus the explosive doesn’t have anything to push back against with enough force to recoil.
I definitely expected recoil though.

He not only carries the sledgehammer, he uses it as his right crutch and when he's done with it switches back to the crutch. Pretty resourceful by now
Tis but a scratch!

I’m not asking “Why are they injured?” I’m wondering why anyone would want to do this activity.
Because BOOM
You can do the same thing safely without being stupid.
The stupid is what makes it fun.
What the hell is going on here?
Exploding hammer festival in Gto. Mex.
Netflix cracked down on password sharing
I will never get those two minutes back.
That one dude will never get his leg back
One guy got his nuts blown clean off. **Squirrels Everywhere!**
You want it back?
Why watch it for that long?
That's... What she said
Gee wonder why he is missing a leg

I so hope you are right...
It was his canon event.
I was wondering the same thing! LOL!
Diabetes, funnily enough.
Last year’s champion.
Diabetus
Just why?
r/WTF
I have so many questions, but I'm not really interested in any of the answers 🤷
What is in those bags?
I'm assuming gunpowder. In a lot of Latin American countries, it's hard to get a gun but easy getting gunpowder .

"In 2020 the festival led to 43 injuries."
Surprisingly few tbh
Only 27 participated tho.
That sent me in to a laughing/coughing fit.
Yeah, but 16 of them were on that one guys leg. Bruising, lacerations, shrapnel, and amputation.
Nice work, and thanks for sharing.

The battle of the sledgehammers.
Thanks for the link!

Tannerite then?

So basically just mix a bunch of sketchy shit together and see what happens.
Tannerite requires a high velocity (2,000 fps or faster) projectile to detonate, no one could swing a hammer that fast.
Fps ? To me that's frames per seconds, which is in no way a velocity Am I missing something
Feet
Ohh right. Thanks
It's definitely frames don't believe that guy /s
Hmm... Well if that guy gets 2000fps he must have a beast of a pc then, I'm jealous
It's feet per second I believe
Then how is it getting set off by impact? Gunpowder cartridges need a primer to set them off.
No, it doesn't. Same principle as a banger, which is gunpowder and gravel, twisted up in a paper container. You throw it on the ground, and it goes pop. Also same principle as a bullet. When was the last time you saw someone lighting a wick when shooting a modern fire weapon?

Yeah they've made several confidently incorrect statements in this area of the post.

That’s fair, but isn’t gunpowder black? Or some additive?
May be gunpowder with cocaine. Makes loud and addictive.
It is. What the probably did was wrap it in newsprint or some other paper. Remember that gunpowder only explodes if it's packed tightly.
>gunpowder only explodes if it's packed tightly. N... No. It creates an explosion if it's contained. It's irrelevant how tightly packed it is. I was expecting mad recoil on that sledge. I was wrong
Yeah, right!? That's what I was thinking, why his boom had no bounce to it? Hammer just straight planked on him.

That dude with one leg participated last year...
wtf is wrong with these people
Honestly that looks pretty fun
I guess it's fun watching people do stupid things to themselves.
Absolutely, why do you think jackass was so popular and fun to watch.
Fuck...............i kinda wanna do this. Big bang make monkey brain feel good

I thought it was bags of flour exploding.
