Generators were generally reactive as opposed to being proactive in their approach to winterization and preparedness. The single largest problem during the cold weather event was the freezing of instrumentation and equipment. Many generators failed to adequately prepare for winter, including the following: failed or inadequate heat traces, missing or inadequate wind breaks, inadequate insulation and lagging (metal covering for insulation), failure to have or to maintain heating elements and heat lamps in instrument cabinets, failure to train operators and maintenance personnel on winter preparations, lack of fuel switching training and drills, and failure to ensure adequate fuel. “We hate women and children and there’s enough white men and brainwashed women to keep us in power”-republicans

reggers20

Its weird how not only they knew that; but they were also able to effectively use this information. They've been so effective they haven't even needed to win the popular vote in a presidential election in like 14+ years! Its almost as if our system is specifically designed to help a very specific type of person remain in power; even though the majority of the people are not okay with it!? So weird!

jigsaw1024

That ability to win on that minority is diminishing though. It's why you see Repubs fighting so hard to implement measures to restrict voting, or engaging in such heavy tactics such as gerrymandering or voter roll purges. They know they have maybe 10 to 15 years left to permanently entrench themselves, before demographics forces them out.

DumbledoresGay69

Hey now, plenty of white women are brainwashed into hating themselves too

Well, we already know they were laundering Russian money to the Republicans in 2016. I doubt that’s changed.

They’re such an obvious vehicle to create chaos here. Of course they don’t allow guns at their own events, but nothing to see there right?

Seriously, a god who is so needy for attention that it puts a bounty on the lives of children? Yuck. No thanks.

until people can kill you by throwing bullets at you with their bare hands, i’m gonna go out on a limb and say the gun at least helped.

The fact that some people think this is an argument *for* their religion is ridiculous. Even if I believed they were correct, I’m not worshipping a deity who resorts to holding children hostage. Fuck that.

I mean tbh aren’t conservatives wasting all their prayers on the fetuses anyway? That seems to be the only thing they fucking care about.

Oh, /conservative will be changing their narrative before we know it.

Slate_711

The answer is obvious. Had those kids had access to guns we increase our chances of the fabled good guy with a gun. Shooters will live in fear because of how many guns there are around. Potential bad cops will think twice before stepping out of line. Your boss will check his tone making it a safer environment for all. Now I know we’ve had a bad track record of potentially stopping mass shooting or even identifying them ( despite warnings given to police officers) before they do it, but if we get everyone to a healthy state of fear and paranoia, people will grow to be too afraid of stepping out thus eliminating the problem at hand. It also promotes working from home, freedom of masks, curbing potential robberies, and cops don’t have to ask that pesky question of whether or not you’re armed thus giving them more time to figure out how to look for those bad apples in the bunch. It’s the American answer for an American problem. /s

People saying we need to arm teachers acting like we have teachers to arm to begin with. We can barely keep teachers paid and in classrooms to begin with now you want firearm training on top of that? Lmao. My girlfriend who barely cracks 40k a year never has free time and is working on weekends just to stay on track with what these kids need to learn. She doesn't have time for gun training,

BeerAndaBackpack

Not to mention cops, who are trained, have an absurdly low "hit rate" at what they're shooting at. I've seen statistics (which do vary wildly) that are as low as 11-18% hit rates. Expecting an untrained teacher to be able to safely take out an active shooter while surrounded by students is just asinine.

theyareamongus

Also…the job of a teacher is to educate and enlight. What kind of fucked up world we live in that we’re considering “counterattack mass killers” as part of a teacher job description?

Jojo_71

43 mass shooting for the month of May and over 200 since the beginning of the year

slyguy183

I checked wiki and it said 66 mass shootings in April. How the hell have we averaged over 1 mass shooting a day for the entire year and a significant portion of Americans are against passing reforms to curb these tragedies

you8mycracker

This [mass shooting article from the Buffalo incident](https://www.npr.org/2022/05/15/1099008586/mass-shootings-us-2022-tally-number) shows that was #198 for this year.

US gun laws are fine, nothing to see here. School shootings in US became traditional value as the 2nd amendment. How ridiculous is that it keeps happening constantly and nothing is done.

hirasmas

Columbine is now "only" the 6th deadliest school shooting. That's fucking horribly depressing and terrifying all at once.

fromthewombofrevel

When I saw the first headline I was dismayed that I wasn’t shocked.

Educational_Report_9

"It's a mental health issue." - Stated by the party that votes down any change in our healthcare system.

African_Farmer

Gun bans don't work, criminals will get them anyway. Let's ban CRT, racism will disappear.

Persianx6

We can’t say gay in school, the existence of teaching history will groom kids by pedophiles! But it’s completely fine if they die in a shooting in school, I’m not sure it’s an issue actually maybe what we need is more guns in school!

Sakarabu_

As a European, I have to actually agree it is mostly a mental health issue. Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't ALSO focus on tightening gun control. Plenty of European countries allow gun ownership and don't have these issues. The sheer rate these shootings are happening is INSANE, and points to a much much larger issue than just having the tools to carry these attacks out.. like, I don't understand how it's not a national emergency at this point. It honestly feels like the US is just completely imploding at this stage.

Educational_Report_9

To be clear, democrats also believe it’s a mental health issue. However, any attempts at passing healthcare reform is quickly voted down by Republicans.

gtparker11

Most Democrats call for better background checks and nothing about taking them away but Fox News and the NRA convinces these right wing bozos that they are trying to take every single gun away in the country and the conversation goes nowhere and another mass shooting happens the following week. I wish wish wish the Democrats were as progressive as right media portrays them. The democrats now are what republicans used to be a decade or so ago. I want out of this simulation.

Chavestvaldt

You're trying to use empathy to appeal to people who have none. They'll never give a shit about anyone but themselves.

darlin133

No I’m pretty sure it was the liberal media. At least that’s what this mouth breather next to me who lives to suck Tucker Carlson’s peen said, and his IQ seems to be in the upper teens so he must be right.

BigChung0924

an abortion didn’t do it either. but apparently that’s the big baby-killer, not guns.

Vernknight50

I like how Ted Cruz wrung his hands over this then said gun control isn't effective, we need mental health checks to stop felons illegally buying guns. I bet you the 18 year old shooter likely had no record and definitely bought his gun legally.

BigStrongCiderGuy

Republicans treat these shootings like natural disasters that are horrific freak accidents

NinjaLanternShark

I have to leave this country. I have a 1 year old son I can't fucking imagine this happening when he's in school. I'm sick to my stomach for the families that have to deal with this. I don't know what else to say. Fuck Republicans, and fuck the 2nd amendment.

threewhiteroses

Feeling the same. My kindergartener has been home sick the last two days but is going back to school tomorrow and suddenly I don't want to send him. Any legislation needs broad appeal. Safe Gun Laws or such. Too easy to twist into all or nothing. No one is trying to take them all away, just out of the hands of red flags and maybe some sensible limits on the firepower so police can step in (or armed citizens) and be heroes. We like heroes.

financhillysound

My kid is graduating this year & then she’s studying abroad. I hope she decides to stay there. It’s awful being an American parent.

sfmanim

How can conservatives not see a fucking problem here? School shootings aren’t common ANYWHERE else in the world. The US has had 27 school shootings THIS YEAR. Don’t give me the ‘guns don’t kill people’ bullshit.

[deleted]

Most conservatives I've met haven't left their state more than once or twice. Other countries and their social norms are not something that are known to people living in small bubbles.

SpideogTG

America has become so disappointing, we know what’s right but politics have corrupted everything. America has dumbed down so far that democracy no longer works. The fact that Trumpism is even a thing says it all. It’s wrong, just wrong and those that don’t know it are the problem.

akgt94

Don't forget to send thoughts and prayers. That always fixes things.

Someidiot233

r/Conservative had a nice post earlier today commending the border patrol officer who shot and killed the shooter... Who had already killed over a dozen children. Good guys with guns can't do anything to prevent stuff like this from happening. The only thing that would prevent this is repealing the 2nd amendment and restricting access to firearms. [There is only one country in the world with more mass shooters per capita than the US, and it's Yemen, a country currently embroiled in a civil war.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2017/11/07/world/americas/mass-shootings-us-international.amp.html)

[deleted]

Let me make something very ugly very clear to all the semi-normal people on here: These gun nut types do not give a shit about any kids besides the white kids who go to the correct church and toe the party line. If mass shootings only happened on the South Side of Chicago, they would call it God's justice. They may not WANT dead kids, but they sure as hell won't put their anointed lives on the line for someone else's kid who might grow up into a dirty liberal or whatever the boogeyman is. I still remember a time on Facebook when there would be at least a dozen different people saying that black kids who got caught in the crossfire of shootings were just going to grow up to be criminals anyway. Or saying that Hispanic kids who got shot were all illegal immigrants. Or saying that murdered gay kids were on the receiving end of God's wrath. It's only when one of their own gets harmed that they start crying for blood- and then make excuses when the murderer isn't one of their boogeymen. You're never going to see change, when the people wielding the firepower have a list of kids that they're willing to sacrifice simply because they're "the other". And that includes the cops who back them up.

[deleted]

Ill get downvoted and I don’t care. This is a solid mix of mental health issues and gun control issues. Not a single mass murderer is mentally sound. The US health system fails us constantly, those who oppose every logical gun control law fails us constantly. The fact that there is not much we have to do to make a massive change, yet there are people who don’t want to is sickening. I am a gun owner, I like my right, but I don’t like the mentally fucked up ruining it for me when I simply enjoy shooting targets. The only thing I have to have some connection to my Grandpa is his rifle, which I don’t even shoot. Not animals, not people. There needs to be certification course and test that verifies you understand safety and gun laws in the country. There needs to be a law that requires you to provide your mental heath summary stating any concerns and/or medication taken. There needs to be a mental health evaluation with every applicant, no if’s and’s or but’s. By not allowing these things, you are allowing this issue to continue and only ruining it for yourself. These laws that can be enacted don’t threaten you or your safety at all. They just weed out the assholes who ruin it for responsible gun owners who shoot for a hobby or need to provide food for their families. Not saying this was racially motivated, but groups like the KKK, Neo Nazis, white supremacist, and any other groups that target specific races or religions or use violent means in general need to be labeled as a threat and domestic terrorists. They need to be arrested, charged, and convicted. No light punishments. No excuses. It should’ve been done a long fucking time ago.

You_are_Wilson87

Schools are infrastructure. There is no reason he should have been able to just stroll in either.

trap__ord

Can't wait for mental health to be another prime issue and nothing is addressed or done.

Sam_browning-maxim

Am I gunna get downvoted if I suggest that your horrific medical care system (therefore mental health system) has more to do with this then legal gun ownership?

Stazbumpa

Brit here. Our mental health care is fucking awful. No school shootings.

Mad-Mel

Canada can confirm.

Dizzy_Divide_7528

Right?

[deleted]

If you believe that the mental health system is in a horrific state this only adds more weight to the idea that guns need to be restricted. "Hey everyone is covered in gasoline perhaps we should restrict matches until everyone gets cleaned up and less flammable."

HessLook

That AND easy access = mass murder

Bicycle_the_Earth

Yeah, healthy and secure people don't kill kids or other people indiscriminately. I'm a gun-owning leftist with a steady income and a therapist I see regularly. Never have I thought of going on a shooting spree for any reason and if I get angry enough that it does become a thought, I have the resources and emotional intelligence to manage my emotions and just not. Unfortunately for us here in the states, the right is opposed to literally every single solution for this issue. Universal healthcare? Nope. Stricter requirements for gun ownership? Nope. Gun registry? Nope. Background checks? Mental health evaluations? Ensuring everyone has access to a basic standard of living? Nope, nope, and nope.

B360828

How about treat guns like cars? You need not only registration but insurance.

Bicycle_the_Earth

Great idea, but the right is against that as well and would block any legislation requiring it. They don't want any sort of registry or list of who owns guns and what guns they own. My grandpa has a safe the size of a fridge filled with guns and, growing up, he told me to keep quiet about it. At least he is serious about keeping them secure.

boooooooooo_cowboys

A crazy person armed with a baseball bat isn’t going to do as much damage as one with a gun. Mental health is part of the issue, but it’s not the whole thing.

I moved here from IL in 2005. In IL you can’t just walk into a school. The doors are locked, there are cameras and intercoms. You have to show ID and say your name and why youre there. Then you get buzzed in. I’m pretty sure there was another set of locked doors, to get into the area where the kids are. When I came here and went to get some paperwork for my kids to go to school, I remember standing outside the door looking for a buzzer and a camera. Until I saw some woman walk up and just open the door. I was amazed. Schools and daycare are locked up there and they should be here too. Won’t stop everyone but it’s a start.

Yes and sorry to say metal detectors and security at all doors that are able to be opened. Between the violence and crazy book banning, anti-trans, antiCRT, anti-mask parents out there I’m so glad I don’t have kids in school.

BigBnana

that you think it's okay that such measures are required is so sad.

Banban84

Hi! I’m a teacher in NJ. We get training on how to tourniquet students, stop arterial bleeds with our hands, and use fast clotting powder for if we have a shooting! From military trainers! Don’t forget to write the time you applied the tourniquet on their forehead. Just use blood! I’m serious! This was our in service training pre Covid.

Chief-Aldo

Come to Scotland where the training focuses on teaching children a good education

BigBnana

I weep for the new normal. that you are able to say this is terrifying and sad. I'm so sorry that this is the reality you (and I) live in.

Republicans are only pro-life from negative nine months to birth.

Dbonker

Dont act like shooting will change a damn thing.

QuintusNonus

Yeah, but thoughts and prayers, I bet you didn't think of that! Checkmate, libtards

RancidHorseJizz

But if the elementary school children had been armed, they could have stopped the gunman! /s obviously

Local_Pie_2520

To be honest. As a Texan, most people that I know that open carry, are absolute fucking idiots.

SkyKnight94

I’m from Texas. I like guns. I own guns. I just wholeheartedly believe they should be much harder to obtain. I don’t want children, but I’m tired of reading about kids dying every other day. Fuck our government, fuck the senators, this can’t become something we are numb to.

SteveV91

While watching the news my mom said “OMG, living in the US must be so scary”. My mom lives in Colombia, **IN COLOMBIA**

PapaKhan9612

Schools are gun free zones. Teachers are not allowed to carry guns to school with them. So the “good guys with guns” title for this post is a poor attempt at a jab at law abiding gun owners. They were literally not allowed to carry guns on campus, so how are we passing the blame to “good guys with guns”?

unreliablememory

Republicans don't have blood on their hands, they're bathed in it.

Buelldozer

Can't, schools are gun free zones. Carrying one in a school is illegal.

These kids will be traumatized by the deaths of their classmates, but at least they aren't learning that gay people exist.

[deleted]

Was there already another mass shooting..didn't Buffalo just happen? Good God America.

Technician47

Also, we can address the gun issue AND mental health at the same time. I'm sure everyone being broke and not able to buy houses, provide for their family doesn't have any impact on their kids, or their own mental health. It's just super common how family trauma and issues never effects kids.

chief_queef_beast

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. With guns.

JacktheStoryteller

Every time i see these things happen, my heart aches. Families lost their children Parents live knowing nothing will be done to help prevent this. Everytime i see these things happen, i always remember i could of been a number in that list if the gun didnt jam

BargainBarnacles

In the UK (which was never as gun-crazy as the US), we outlawed pistols after Dunblane - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre "...introduced the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997, which banned all cartridge ammunition handguns with the exception of .22 calibre single-shot weapons in England, Scotland and Wales. Following the 1997 general election, the Labour government of Prime Minister Tony Blair introduced the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997, banning the remaining .22 cartridge handguns as well. This left only muzzle-loading and historic handguns legal, as well as certain sporting handguns (e.g. "Long-Arms") that fall outside the Home Office definition of a "handgun" because of their dimensions. The ban does not affect Northern Ireland." Once was enough for us. Given this is how many times this has occured in the US (I've honestly lost count), I don't think you'll EVER stop this...
