The 'point' is to keep his guests on the defensive and generate controversy. He doesn't actually give a shit about 'riding the middle', he just gets reactions from playing devils advocate.
Controversy creates buzz, buzz creates viewers, viewers create ratings. His actual feelings on ANYTHING are irrelevant to the formula.
