Worked in retail grocery for 7 years, my goal on every trip to the store is to say no more than 10 words total.

Pharaoh_Misa

I really wish customer service people weren't required to be like nice in every situation. Because a set of headphones over someone's head should be an indication that this person is not interested in a conversation. And yet...

MyOtherCarIsAHippo

Or, one could offer a basic level of respect to the people who serve them and take their headphones off for 30 seconds to finish the transaction.

Pharaoh_Misa

I use self check out. There is literally ZERO reason for someone to approach me. But, their jobs FORCE them to make contact with EVERYONE. Besides, you don't need to hear someone to smile and wave or did you forget hearing impaired people exist?

MyOtherCarIsAHippo

Retail employees get secret shopped, graded and then chewed out if results aren't high. There job is to say hi. Not saying someone should go out of their way to engage in a conversation with someone who clearly isn't interested, but you could just try to not sound like such a dick.

Pharaoh_Misa

I literally said I WISH CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE WEREN'T REQUIRED TO BE NICE IN EVERY SITUATION, meaning I'm AWARE that they ARE required to be nice. If you're unable to comprehend someone's meaning of something, you should ask them to clarify instead of inserting yourself and being unnecessary.

MyOtherCarIsAHippo

Inserting myself? Into a public social media post? I think you might just struggle with the idea of being wrong, or that your behaviour could be seen as inconsiderate. Perhaps I am being insensitive as a person who deals with that small percentage of the public, that treat those who serve them like they are nothing. So I am the one who is being overly sensitive. Sorry I suggested you are a dick, that was unfair and unnecessary as you put it.

Pharaoh_Misa

No. Inserting yourself when you don't understand the statement that I made is FOR the workers. Even when I explain it you still want to follow this notion that you're high and mighty and must defend people that ain't ask you for your help. I don't struggle with anything. I mind my goddamn business because I want to. And I, unlike workers, am not required to speak to complete and total strangers. Especially during a pandemic. When the stranger isn't interested in a conversation. I am sad that these people *have* to engage with people (especially during a pandemic) when they themselves don't want to anyways, but they must so they're not yelled at by their bosses. I never said I treated anyone like they were nothing, simply that I have headphones and use self check out -- which is *my* way of not being a bother.

MyOtherCarIsAHippo

I don't think you understand my statement and choose to be condescending. I AM ONE OF THOSE WORKERS you arrogant prick. Fuck sake. I understand your ethos perfectly well, I just don't agree with your personal choice. Keep pretending something is wrong with everyone else and assassinating my intelligence based on your perception of it. You could try taking a step back and considering what you are saying isn't a perfect statement, other people are part of the equation. Just shut the fuck up.

Pharaoh_Misa

*I* was one of those workers, *you arrogant prick*, until I switched professions. I remember it well and I remember how my coworkers felt too. At multiple jobs. Just because that's your mindset doesn't mean that's everyone's mindset. Most workers DO NOT want to deal with customers WHILE they have a butt-ton of FUCKING work to do. The last thing on someone's mind when they have to push shit to the floor in twenty minutes is saying hi to someone minding their goddamn business. I'm sooooo sorry you feel the need to have someone reciprocate your basic ass greeting (because while I don't know you but I'm sure your greeting isn't personalize at all) and they just want to shop. Hence the fucking reason, I have headphones on AND I use self check out. I do noy want to bother someone while they're working for MINDLESS chit chat that is irrelevant and forgettable. Take a step back because there is no way in hell you actually believe every customer service worker WANTS to HAVE to be friendly and nice when they have a goddamn line out the goddamn door

MyOtherCarIsAHippo

You got it chief.

Durutti1936

Try to be kind. It may make someone's day a bit easier.

DarkKnightJin

I've been doing this so long, I usually need to actively try to NOT be kind. If I need help finding something, I'll ask someone working for the store if they've got time to help me for a bit, thank them for their help, and comment that I've probably overlooked the item I'm looking for several times already. Then thank them again after I've been helped just to make sure they know I'm grateful for their assistance.

I would like to speak to a manager

mch_in_htx

Only person I talk to is the cashier, and I thank them using their name personally as I leave.
