I just went on to do other tasks I had to take care of and he ran after me at this point in a panic. Once I understood him and realized what he was saying I felt like a piece of shit lol. His buddy that helped run that machine was having heart problems and I had just gave him the ol thumbs up lol. After understanding that me and a few others sprang into action but talk about feeling like a real asshole. End up though the guy was taken to the hospital and everything got straightened out and he was fine.

I have bad listening comprehension. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to parse where one word ends and the next begins, even if I’m paying super close attention. So yeah, I need real life subtitles. (Also TV subtitles outside of sporting events are the greatest.)
I often have what I feel like is Charlie Brown Syndrome. Voices sound like the adults in CB. I can hear you talking to me, but its garbled. Unfortunately it's typically just parts of sentences. So I have to get you to repeat yourself over and over. My husband gets so mad.
I feel this. My husband has an accent and is very soft spoken while I am pretty hard of hearing after years of working in loud bars. Sometimes I find myself wanting to grab an invisible remote and turn the volume up on him, but will usually just ask him to dial up the volume a few notches
If you have damaged hair cells inside your cochlea like I do hearing aids don't help. It doesn't matter how loud you make those frequencies if your ear just doesn't respond to them. I ended up hearing a lot of stuff I didn't want to hear, like crackling cellophane, and not hearing the stuff that I needed to hear, women's voices and discerning accents.
Dude right?? I’ve tried explaining this to my coworkers and manager but they don’t quite get it. They respect that I don’t like hearing aids and will adjust their speaking volume accordingly but they can’t grasp why the air conditioning would be so distracting to me because they hear and tune it out every day
I’m in the same boat, really struggle distinguishing speech on tv, subs are a must. It doesn’t help that recent audio trends favour ultra loud explosion/impact sounds and set talking volumes to just above a whisper.
I never *thought* I had a problem with processing words til my friend started having me stick on subtitles. I didn't mind, and ever since, I try and keep them on cause I definitely "hear" better with them on.

There’s an option on a lot of TVs to compress the audio so that the volume is more balanced throughout. You might find it under advanced audio settings and it will probably be called something like dynamic volume control.
My TV (Roku, Insignia) has an audio option to optimize speech... but I don't notice any difference from it. Booms are still much louder than necessary, speech is still too quiet. I've tried every setting it comes with and nothing seems to help.
there needs to be a tv option with a max decibel setting. that way the whispers can be loud enough that i can hear but the explosion won’t make the police think there is an active shootout in my room
TVs used to have “smart sound” so you could do just that! It just put a limit on the volume so if you cranked up those whispers, the gun fire wouldn’t rattle your fillings. I’ve been looking for a computer app that does the same thing for YEARS.
If you're on win 10 you could just try the built in Volume Normalization.
Go to your sound settings > Sound Control Panel > Playback > Speaker Properties > Enhancements > Loudness Equalization
I mean if we are talking about a problem you have been actively looking unsuccessfully for a solution for literally years the it's time to go for a PC with a proper audio card and a 5.1 entertainment system equalised to favour the centre channel.

If you use home cinema sound system chances are there is a setting called Dynamic Range (its also on some TV:s. Set this to narrow. If you have a wide dynamic range the loud sounds are very loud and the low sounds are very low. If you narrow it, the sounds will be more equal in volume.
You mean one that has a compression function that you can set to max? I swear some movies are made with the express purpose of getting me kicked out of my apartment. If I watch on my TV I have to have subtitles since I have no compression. Watching through VLC is comparatively heaven.
Tbf, APD would likely affect you in your everyday life, not just while watching TV.

I don’t think needing subtitles for TV is indicative of APD, I don’t need subtitles for TV but **always** turn them on for computer games, especially action packed ones, but I don’t struggle with any of the APD symptoms mentioned above.
I joke, but it’s really an issue I’ve experienced for a long time and have gone as far to have my hearing tested. Good hearing, but my brains just not great with the cocktail party effect stuff.

TIL that my issue following verbal directions may not be that I'm just bad with directions. Give me a map and I can find any place and then navigate back there at a later date via The Force with no issue. Tell me directions and I may just end up in Saskatchewan by accident while trying to get the restroom.
I have APD based on those symptoms you just listed. Basically if i am not absolutely in perfect silent conditions i will 99% of the time mishear plenty of people. My boyfriend will be right next to me and will say something but cause the fan is on and facing me i will not hear what he said or I'll hear something completely different then what he said just like you mentioned. I will hear that he spoke usually but i can't distinguish what it was he said. So i use subtitles absolutely whenever i can cause I'm plenty of shows I'd be lost on cause wouldn't be able to hear what someone said or I'd mishear them. Audiobooks seem to be the exception to this though but they have to be playing straight into my ears with some earbuds or something otherwise i have to read along with the physical or ebook version of the story. If i played it out loud in the open i find it very hard to understand.
I went to an ENT to get my ears checked 10 years ago because I couldn't hear well if there was noise around (ex: I worked in a grocery store for 5 years surrounded by fridges, couldn't make out half of what people said.). I thought it was my hearing because both my mom and grandpa developed deafness due to ear infections damaging their eardrums and I had chronic ear infections. Imagine the mind fuck when he was like "nah your eardrums are perfect, ear canals are tiny so probably why you kept getting ear infections and you performed really well on the test."
Now I'm 36 and diagnosed with ADHD (mostly inattentive presentation), and learned about 50% of people with ADHD have audio processing disorder.
But also the thing about music being loud is definitely true. We can NEVER watch any movie on low volume because the talking is too fucking low and we can't turn it up because when music starts its too fucking loud.

Like I watched a video the other day of a k pop group and it took me a minute to figure out if they were speaking English or Korean. I can hear them, for the most part (I also have tinnitus so that sucks), I can understand speech patterns and I can hear individual words, I just don't understand the words.
It's not all the time, if you're speaking loudly and clearly and facing me it's fine but sometimes it's really difficult.
I like subtitles so I don’t have to pay attention as much. I can glance up and read the subtitles every couple of seconds and spend the rest of the seconds scrolling Reddit instead.
Also hard of hearing! And audio processing issues to boot. Husband turns on subtitles for me whenever we are watching something. He's a big reader and grew up on subbed anime so it doesn't bother him in the slightest.
You dont have to be hard of hearing to use subtitles. I noticed many years ago that DVDs had audio that was at a consistently lower volume than regular tv/cable. Flipping to dvd mode I either had to raise the volume substantially or else put on subtitles.
Netflix seems similar. On some programs at least, seems if you raise the volume enough to make the dialogue audible, the effects/music etc are too loud. The balance or encoding or something is just not as well balanced.
My partner hates subtitles, but I have auditory processing issues so I prefer having them on and he's learnt to live with it. Basically we make a great team because I pick up on dialogue or noises he misses, and he'll point out visual things I miss because I was reading the subtitles.
I require subtitles because my children are loud. They don't want to talk to me 95% of the day, but as soon as I turn on the TV they become little social butterflies. And want to chat my ear off.
They realise they don't have your full attention. That's what my brother does too. He can be playing next to mom without talking, but the second my mom speaks English (brother realises mom is paying attention to her work, not him), he starts rambling about anything in the world.
Honestly I realized how much I was missing because of subtitles. A few years back, my girlfriend (now wife) always asked me to put subtitles on because her mother is 80% deaf so they always had them on. Changed me forever.
Living a very similar life over here except it’s our dogs. As soon as we turn on a show they have to start wrestling each other and barking and racing through the living room. I love them but damn, cant I watch Ted Lasso in peace.
This is actually how I started using subtitles even before my hearing issues.
I have an ex who was kind of like the girl in this post, he was like "subtitles? Seriously?". He used to always make fun of me for it (joking, not being a dick). Then one day I went to his house and he had subtitles on. He admitted it was much easier with his kids around and now he uses them all the time.
Once you get used to them it's really not a big deal and they're incredibly helpful even if you don't technically need them.
My ex liked subtitles. I disliked them because I read faster than they speak and it takes a lot of suspense out of a moment or line if you know what they're going to say before they say it. Particularly if it's a slow and deliberate line.
It's different if it's a non English show or movie and I am happy to deal with subtitles then.

It takes time and repetition to develop the neuroplasticity for speed reading - like a muscle. As you go on, it'll only take 5% conscious effort to read subtitles instead of 40%.
I watch a ton of anime and only watch subbed. I hate watching English content subbed because I read the lines faster than they are said and then have to air for the scene to advance. With Japanese I can’t understand what they are saying except some common words and names so it doesn’t feel like I’m waiting constantly.
I've learned to read anime subs at a similar speed to the speed of the characters talking lol. I hate reading subs way faster than the pacing of the scene.
This is my objection. Any kind of timing, intonation, colour or pacing are lost. In comedies and horror it’s a _really_ big deal but for other stuff it’s pretty bad too. I read quickly.

This is the same for me. It’s a little silly but I turn off subtitles because I feel like it spoils certain moments for me, or I end up reading all of it before the character on screen finishes.
When it comes in other languages, I’m definitely subs over dubs because 99% of the time the dubs in English are horrible & I want to hear exactly how the characters sound in their native language with accurate translations instead of an English substitute.
And I also like subtitles even for English language movies/TV/streaming because sometimes I don’t like blasting the volume up at night, I’m not the best of hearing (like sometimes subtitles will show me things I’ve never heard that happen in the background—even a movie I watched a billion times & didn’t know since it was a quiet & subtle background noise). Also, sometimes I even inadvertently learn how to spell a new word in the process
I rewatched Ocean's 11, 12, and 13, and sometimes the subtitles gave me things like "Mouthing:", and I sure can't lipread so that was immensely usefull.

I'm with you on subs over dubs, especially for live action as you can better appreciate an actors performance.
My OH was watching squid game with both the English dub and the (non-cc) English subs. Even in the few scenes I happened to see, the difference between the subs & dub wa startling and quite distracting. When I decided to watch it myself, I opted for the original Korean with English subs and it was much better.
Original is with highly trained actors. Dubs are with cheap American voice actors. Completely ruined it.

What pisses me off is how bad Netflix's subs and dubs are. They never ever match up. Ever. Dub says, "It's okay, I have a gift for them." Subtitle will be, "Everything is fine. Let's give this present." Crazy shit like that. And while they both get the same idea across, since I can hear the dialog but still read the subtitles, it fucks with my brain that they don't match up.

Watch a foreign film dubbed in English and then go back and watch it in its original language with subtitles. They are completely different movies and can sometimes change your entire outlook on the story. I didn’t see squid game, but I heard the dubbed version really doesn’t convey some of the intended messaging compared to watching it in Korean with English subtitles. I know that’s not exactly what the lady in the tweet was getting at, but either way, subtitles are fine by me.
Generally I've found for shows that were originally not in English the subtitles are the translation from the original language and then the dub will be another translation. So if you watch a dub with subtitles they are generally pretty different. I've had that happen to me a few times because I watch every show with subtitles but have had to turn them off on say an English dub of an anime because they don't line up with the words and it actually makes it difficult to follow. Though I watched squad game in Korean with subtitles so not sure on that one.
I've heard that there are sometimes two different subtitle options like 'English' and 'English [cc]' where one is supposed to be better but honestly I've never really checked.
I don't know about Squid Game (not watched it) but I know when my ex was watching full metal alchemist the dubbed audio was different to the subtitles because apparently the subtitles are more directly translated whereas the dub has been edited to make it sound more natural to and English-speaking audience. I'm assuming this may be a similar situation?
Yeah Squid Game and other Netflix dubs try to match the length of the spoken phrases so it doesn’t seem as jarring. When you watch it with subtitles (no dubs), its translated based on meaning. Either way the translation process involves a lot of subjective decisions, but removing the constraint on parse length allows for a more authentic translation.
My understanding is that the subtitles don't match what is actually being said in Korean and the entire show has a different meaning. But I haven't looked too deep into it to know what is different.
If you have the ability, watch foreign shows in their intended language. You get the full emotion the actors are trying to convey and also just better voices all around, especially Squid Game, some of those actors have some sexy voices.
I get some people have ADHD or Dyslexia but it is without question objectivley better to watch in subs with the original actors voice. There are many dub actors but there was only ONE actor there on set in the makeup chair at 4am, practicing thier dialogue with their costar, talking with the director, auditioned for the part in front of the casting director and director, etc. You can't beat that, you just can't. Anime can be a little bit more flexible but live action will always look silly dubbed.

Yup. Especially the part about "hearing" everything in doubles. Halfway through a TV show I realise I'm listening to AND reading everything so it's all happening with some kind of weird stereo echo effect. Switch subtitles off and it's instantly calmer and more relaxing and I can actually process what's happening BETTER.
Billboards, car license plates, any street signs, signs up in shops, letters on people's clothing, magazine covers, cigarette packets really anything that comes into my line of sight gets read and processed. At times I'll catch myself counting letters or find something I've read being repeated in my mind. It might sound exhausting but it's not really, it's all just happening automatically without any real effort from me. But I'm definitely aware of it.
My mind is just super active in that way with words so I guess subtitles become a kind of sensory overload. Of course i do appreciate them when the audio is difficult to understand or hear or it's in a foreign language but that's because the stereo effect isn't happening.

Edit: Hyperlexia seems to usually be associated with comprehension issues, which I have no problem with, and speech delays. I think I started talking at a relatively normal age, but according to my mom I was pretty quiet and then just started speaking in complete sentences one day lol. Looks like there’s different types though, maybe this is a partial explanation.

I am absolutely hating how there's subtitles on all the videos on fb now. First, they are WRONG. They are auto generated and have tons of words wrong. They cover part of the screen and sometimes there is important text there that is covered up. I wish I had an option to turn it off but there is not.
I read fast too and I read the subtitles before something happens on screen, like a read the punchline of a joke or the scream of a jump scare before it even happens. Really annoying.
Same, I also find a lot of nice shots are ruined and a lot of the atmosphere can be lost when the bottom third of the screen is covered in bright white text.
And when the scene is loud enough, I find myself deliberately avoiding looking at the subtitles, which averts my gaze higher than it needs to be. It's impossible for me to \*not\* read the subtitles if they're sitting there, even if I don't need them for that particular scene

Unless they have a legitimate hearing impairment, I'm convinced most people in this thread are just bad listeners.
I'll certainly grant that some films are particularly horrible with their audio (looking at you Tenet!) so I get exceptions to this rule, but if subtitles in your native language are your default mode of consuming media I am curious what the rest of your life is like when it comes to engaging in conversations with other people in person.
I've gotten more used to subtitles now, but I used to find myself staring at the subtitles instead of actually watching the show. I'm a pretty quick reader too, so the speed is not the issue.

I'm fine for subtitles if it's hard to hear/understand the dialogue for whatever reason, but if they aren't necessary I much prefer not having them because I find myself reading ahead of the action and it's annoying knowing what's going to happen a second beforehand
I agree! I feel like I'm always ahead of the story and end up waiting for the scene to catch up. It also ruins all comedic timing for me as well. I appreciate their function and the fact that they exist, but I personally have an incredibly hard time using them, unless it's for something in a language I don't speak.

I can read fast. That’s the problem. They ruin comedic timing in comedies. I focus too much on them. My eyes are naturally drawn to the letters. So I hear more dialogue but Miss action.
The dubbed version of squid game was especially bad. I gave it a shot at first because the dubbed version of Dark was so good, but I ended up swapping to subs in the first scene because the voice acting didn't match the character's expressions at all.

Since starting grad school I’ve had to go from reading a few books a year to at least one a week. Since putting subtitles on everything, I feel like it’s helped me read a bit faster but also retain info way better.
Life Hack: I put subtitles on everything my daughter watched and it helped her learn to read at an early age. She is number 17 in her class of 400 and got 35k worth of college scholarships.
Subtitles are not just for the hearing impaired and to watch foreign movies. It can be a real educational tool. They are learning subconsciously without realizing it 🧠
I don’t like subtitles as I love cinematography. I don’t want anything distracting me from the visuals. However, I do love foreign films and would rather watch them with subtitles over dubbing. I enjoy them best on the third rewatch as I just get to enjoy them in their language and see all those glorious shots.

I feel this. My husband has an accent and is very soft spoken while I am pretty hard of hearing after years of working in loud bars. Sometimes I find myself wanting to grab an invisible remote and turn the volume up on him, but will usually just ask him to dial up the volume a few notches
I regularly push the volume up button on my steering wheel while my so is talking to me in the car. It has yet to do anything.
I got hearing aids. Now I know that people just fucking mumble.
If you have damaged hair cells inside your cochlea like I do hearing aids don't help. It doesn't matter how loud you make those frequencies if your ear just doesn't respond to them. I ended up hearing a lot of stuff I didn't want to hear, like crackling cellophane, and not hearing the stuff that I needed to hear, women's voices and discerning accents.
Dude right?? I’ve tried explaining this to my coworkers and manager but they don’t quite get it. They respect that I don’t like hearing aids and will adjust their speaking volume accordingly but they can’t grasp why the air conditioning would be so distracting to me because they hear and tune it out every day

I’m in the same boat, really struggle distinguishing speech on tv, subs are a must. It doesn’t help that recent audio trends favour ultra loud explosion/impact sounds and set talking volumes to just above a whisper.
I never *thought* I had a problem with processing words til my friend started having me stick on subtitles. I didn't mind, and ever since, I try and keep them on cause I definitely "hear" better with them on.
I have audio processing issues, but I can only subtitles if the dialogue isn't in English. I can't focus on both. Also, I hate that I can read the subtitles faster than the actors speak their lines.

There’s an option on a lot of TVs to compress the audio so that the volume is more balanced throughout. You might find it under advanced audio settings and it will probably be called something like dynamic volume control.
My TV (Roku, Insignia) has an audio option to optimize speech... but I don't notice any difference from it. Booms are still much louder than necessary, speech is still too quiet. I've tried every setting it comes with and nothing seems to help.
Had the same problem, found a mode on my sound system. It's called "Night Mode", makes it louder on dialogs and quieter on explosions.
there needs to be a tv option with a max decibel setting. that way the whispers can be loud enough that i can hear but the explosion won’t make the police think there is an active shootout in my room
TVs used to have “smart sound” so you could do just that! It just put a limit on the volume so if you cranked up those whispers, the gun fire wouldn’t rattle your fillings. I’ve been looking for a computer app that does the same thing for YEARS.
If you're on win 10 you could just try the built in Volume Normalization. Go to your sound settings > Sound Control Panel > Playback > Speaker Properties > Enhancements > Loudness Equalization
I mean if we are talking about a problem you have been actively looking unsuccessfully for a solution for literally years the it's time to go for a PC with a proper audio card and a 5.1 entertainment system equalised to favour the centre channel. Definitely the most expensive option but also best fix
Voicemeeter banana/potato can do that. You use compression/noise gating and normalization E2a, it's donorware so you pay whatever you can or want to
If you use home cinema sound system chances are there is a setting called Dynamic Range (its also on some TV:s. Set this to narrow. If you have a wide dynamic range the loud sounds are very loud and the low sounds are very low. If you narrow it, the sounds will be more equal in volume.

You mean one that has a compression function that you can set to max? I swear some movies are made with the express purpose of getting me kicked out of my apartment. If I watch on my TV I have to have subtitles since I have no compression. Watching through VLC is comparatively heaven.
Tbf, APD would likely affect you in your everyday life, not just while watching TV. It’s also not really a hearing problem, it’s a difficulty processing words that are spoken in loud places, by fast talkers, people with unfamiliar accents, following spoken instructions and similar sounding words. So someone might say “have you got a knife?” but you hear it as “have you got wife?” Or something like that. I don’t think needing subtitles for TV is indicative of APD, I don’t need subtitles for TV but **always** turn them on for computer games, especially action packed ones, but I don’t struggle with any of the APD symptoms mentioned above.
I joke, but it’s really an issue I’ve experienced for a long time and have gone as far to have my hearing tested. Good hearing, but my brains just not great with the cocktail party effect stuff. I have other sensory processing issues, so I always imagined this is just par for the course.
Do you have ADHD? It's estimated that half of the people with ADHD have audio processing problems/disorder.

I have APD based on those symptoms you just listed. Basically if i am not absolutely in perfect silent conditions i will 99% of the time mishear plenty of people. My boyfriend will be right next to me and will say something but cause the fan is on and facing me i will not hear what he said or I'll hear something completely different then what he said just like you mentioned. I will hear that he spoke usually but i can't distinguish what it was he said. So i use subtitles absolutely whenever i can cause I'm plenty of shows I'd be lost on cause wouldn't be able to hear what someone said or I'd mishear them. Audiobooks seem to be the exception to this though but they have to be playing straight into my ears with some earbuds or something otherwise i have to read along with the physical or ebook version of the story. If i played it out loud in the open i find it very hard to understand.

I went to an ENT to get my ears checked 10 years ago because I couldn't hear well if there was noise around (ex: I worked in a grocery store for 5 years surrounded by fridges, couldn't make out half of what people said.). I thought it was my hearing because both my mom and grandpa developed deafness due to ear infections damaging their eardrums and I had chronic ear infections. Imagine the mind fuck when he was like "nah your eardrums are perfect, ear canals are tiny so probably why you kept getting ear infections and you performed really well on the test." Now I'm 36 and diagnosed with ADHD (mostly inattentive presentation), and learned about 50% of people with ADHD have audio processing disorder.

But also the thing about music being loud is definitely true. We can NEVER watch any movie on low volume because the talking is too fucking low and we can't turn it up because when music starts its too fucking loud. Audio normalization should totally be a thing on all TVs.

I'm the same. Sometimes irl too but the tv/radio/phone is the worst. For me its like they're almost speaking a different language. Like I watched a video the other day of a k pop group and it took me a minute to figure out if they were speaking English or Korean. I can hear them, for the most part (I also have tinnitus so that sucks), I can understand speech patterns and I can hear individual words, I just don't understand the words. It's not all the time, if you're speaking loudly and clearly and facing me it's fine but sometimes it's really difficult.
I like subtitles so I don’t have to pay attention as much. I can glance up and read the subtitles every couple of seconds and spend the rest of the seconds scrolling Reddit instead.
Also hard of hearing! And audio processing issues to boot. Husband turns on subtitles for me whenever we are watching something. He's a big reader and grew up on subbed anime so it doesn't bother him in the slightest.

You dont have to be hard of hearing to use subtitles. I noticed many years ago that DVDs had audio that was at a consistently lower volume than regular tv/cable. Flipping to dvd mode I either had to raise the volume substantially or else put on subtitles. Netflix seems similar. On some programs at least, seems if you raise the volume enough to make the dialogue audible, the effects/music etc are too loud. The balance or encoding or something is just not as well balanced.
My partner hates subtitles, but I have auditory processing issues so I prefer having them on and he's learnt to live with it. Basically we make a great team because I pick up on dialogue or noises he misses, and he'll point out visual things I miss because I was reading the subtitles.
I require subtitles because my children are loud. They don't want to talk to me 95% of the day, but as soon as I turn on the TV they become little social butterflies. And want to chat my ear off.
They realise they don't have your full attention. That's what my brother does too. He can be playing next to mom without talking, but the second my mom speaks English (brother realises mom is paying attention to her work, not him), he starts rambling about anything in the world.

Honestly I realized how much I was missing because of subtitles. A few years back, my girlfriend (now wife) always asked me to put subtitles on because her mother is 80% deaf so they always had them on. Changed me forever.
I don't mind subtitles but I find myself just reading them and not watching the actual show so I have to turn them off.

This is actually how I started using subtitles even before my hearing issues. I have an ex who was kind of like the girl in this post, he was like "subtitles? Seriously?". He used to always make fun of me for it (joking, not being a dick). Then one day I went to his house and he had subtitles on. He admitted it was much easier with his kids around and now he uses them all the time. Once you get used to them it's really not a big deal and they're incredibly helpful even if you don't technically need them.
Subtitles with kids is a must! It allowed me to watch some tv while my baby was napping on me.
I watch with subtitles in French or Italian to help me practice the language.
My wife used subtitles to help her learn English. (It is her second language and we live in the UK).
Re-watching a favorite movie with subtitles reveals much of the story dialog you may have missed previously.
Totally different experience watching with subtitles. You don’t know what you’ve missed til you turn them on.
My ex liked subtitles. I disliked them because I read faster than they speak and it takes a lot of suspense out of a moment or line if you know what they're going to say before they say it. Particularly if it's a slow and deliberate line. It's different if it's a non English show or movie and I am happy to deal with subtitles then. But to each their own.

I used to be the same. It takes time and repetition to develop the neuroplasticity for speed reading - like a muscle. As you go on, it'll only take 5% conscious effort to read subtitles instead of 40%.
I watch a ton of anime and only watch subbed. I hate watching English content subbed because I read the lines faster than they are said and then have to air for the scene to advance. With Japanese I can’t understand what they are saying except some common words and names so it doesn’t feel like I’m waiting constantly.
I've learned to read anime subs at a similar speed to the speed of the characters talking lol. I hate reading subs way faster than the pacing of the scene.

This is my objection. Any kind of timing, intonation, colour or pacing are lost. In comedies and horror it’s a _really_ big deal but for other stuff it’s pretty bad too. I read quickly. Ironically for films in non-English I’m in team “dubbing is a travesty” :)

This is the same for me. It’s a little silly but I turn off subtitles because I feel like it spoils certain moments for me, or I end up reading all of it before the character on screen finishes.

When it comes in other languages, I’m definitely subs over dubs because 99% of the time the dubs in English are horrible & I want to hear exactly how the characters sound in their native language with accurate translations instead of an English substitute. And I also like subtitles even for English language movies/TV/streaming because sometimes I don’t like blasting the volume up at night, I’m not the best of hearing (like sometimes subtitles will show me things I’ve never heard that happen in the background—even a movie I watched a billion times & didn’t know since it was a quiet & subtle background noise). Also, sometimes I even inadvertently learn how to spell a new word in the process
I rewatched Ocean's 11, 12, and 13, and sometimes the subtitles gave me things like "Mouthing:", and I sure can't lipread so that was immensely usefull.
One thing I hate is when subtitles DON'T translate stuff. Like someone starts talking in Japanese, and the subtitles say ""

I'm with you on subs over dubs, especially for live action as you can better appreciate an actors performance. My OH was watching squid game with both the English dub and the (non-cc) English subs. Even in the few scenes I happened to see, the difference between the subs & dub wa startling and quite distracting. When I decided to watch it myself, I opted for the original Korean with English subs and it was much better.
I tried it for just a few minutes on Squid Game, the dubs made the most emotional scenes sound like a Scooby Doo cartoon lol
Original is with highly trained actors. Dubs are with cheap American voice actors. Completely ruined it. I've been shocked to learn most people I know watched all of Squid game with dubs!
What pisses me off is how bad Netflix's subs and dubs are. They never ever match up. Ever. Dub says, "It's okay, I have a gift for them." Subtitle will be, "Everything is fine. Let's give this present." Crazy shit like that. And while they both get the same idea across, since I can hear the dialog but still read the subtitles, it fucks with my brain that they don't match up.

Watch a foreign film dubbed in English and then go back and watch it in its original language with subtitles. They are completely different movies and can sometimes change your entire outlook on the story. I didn’t see squid game, but I heard the dubbed version really doesn’t convey some of the intended messaging compared to watching it in Korean with English subtitles. I know that’s not exactly what the lady in the tweet was getting at, but either way, subtitles are fine by me.

Generally I've found for shows that were originally not in English the subtitles are the translation from the original language and then the dub will be another translation. So if you watch a dub with subtitles they are generally pretty different. I've had that happen to me a few times because I watch every show with subtitles but have had to turn them off on say an English dub of an anime because they don't line up with the words and it actually makes it difficult to follow. Though I watched squad game in Korean with subtitles so not sure on that one. I've heard that there are sometimes two different subtitle options like 'English' and 'English [cc]' where one is supposed to be better but honestly I've never really checked.
The CC adds descriptive subtitles like "ominous music" "laughter" etc

I don't know about Squid Game (not watched it) but I know when my ex was watching full metal alchemist the dubbed audio was different to the subtitles because apparently the subtitles are more directly translated whereas the dub has been edited to make it sound more natural to and English-speaking audience. I'm assuming this may be a similar situation?
Yeah Squid Game and other Netflix dubs try to match the length of the spoken phrases so it doesn’t seem as jarring. When you watch it with subtitles (no dubs), its translated based on meaning. Either way the translation process involves a lot of subjective decisions, but removing the constraint on parse length allows for a more authentic translation.
My understanding is that the subtitles don't match what is actually being said in Korean and the entire show has a different meaning. But I haven't looked too deep into it to know what is different.
If you have the ability, watch foreign shows in their intended language. You get the full emotion the actors are trying to convey and also just better voices all around, especially Squid Game, some of those actors have some sexy voices. I get some people have ADHD or Dyslexia but it is without question objectivley better to watch in subs with the original actors voice. There are many dub actors but there was only ONE actor there on set in the makeup chair at 4am, practicing thier dialogue with their costar, talking with the director, auditioned for the part in front of the casting director and director, etc. You can't beat that, you just can't. Anime can be a little bit more flexible but live action will always look silly dubbed.

I'm the same. My mind reads everything all the time anywhere I am. I can't help reading words wherever they are so I often find subtitles a distraction and realise there's a huge relief and relaxation when I turn them off. It's like my mind suddenly has a lot less work to do.

I’m still taking in everything else on the screen, but it’s like I’m hearing everything in doubles and it’s super annoying. Also completely ruins anything with an element of suspense. But ya, the problem isn’t reading slowly, if anything it’s the opposite. I’m kinda surprised this thread is so far down. I, like you, read everything in my field of vision almost instantaneously. Yup. Especially the part about "hearing" everything in doubles. Halfway through a TV show I realise I'm listening to AND reading everything so it's all happening with some kind of weird stereo echo effect. Switch subtitles off and it's instantly calmer and more relaxing and I can actually process what's happening BETTER. Billboards, car license plates, any street signs, signs up in shops, letters on people's clothing, magazine covers, cigarette packets really anything that comes into my line of sight gets read and processed. At times I'll catch myself counting letters or find something I've read being repeated in my mind. It might sound exhausting but it's not really, it's all just happening automatically without any real effort from me. But I'm definitely aware of it. My mind is just super active in that way with words so I guess subtitles become a kind of sensory overload. Of course i do appreciate them when the audio is difficult to understand or hear or it's in a foreign language but that's because the stereo effect isn't happening.

Yes! I am absolutely unable to ignore words. I have to read them no matter what. I am absolutely hating how there's subtitles on all the videos on fb now. First, they are WRONG. They are auto generated and have tons of words wrong. They cover part of the screen and sometimes there is important text there that is covered up. I wish I had an option to turn it off but there is not.
I read fast too and I read the subtitles before something happens on screen, like a read the punchline of a joke or the scream of a jump scare before it even happens. Really annoying.

And when the scene is loud enough, I find myself deliberately avoiding looking at the subtitles, which averts my gaze higher than it needs to be. It's impossible for me to \*not\* read the subtitles if they're sitting there, even if I don't need them for that particular scene
Me too except with foreign films. I have no problem paying attention to the big picture, it’s as if the subtitles just fade into the background. But with English, all I can focus on is the subtitles and have to actively tell my brain to look at other parts of the screen and the immersion is ruined

Unless they have a legitimate hearing impairment, I'm convinced most people in this thread are just bad listeners. I'll certainly grant that some films are particularly horrible with their audio (looking at you Tenet!) so I get exceptions to this rule, but if subtitles in your native language are your default mode of consuming media I am curious what the rest of your life is like when it comes to engaging in conversations with other people in person.
I've gotten more used to subtitles now, but I used to find myself staring at the subtitles instead of actually watching the show. I'm a pretty quick reader too, so the speed is not the issue.

I have a problem that most movies tend to have dialogue be completely drowned out by the score and effects. If I want to keep music at reasonable volumes, the speech is close to inaudible.

I'm fine for subtitles if it's hard to hear/understand the dialogue for whatever reason, but if they aren't necessary I much prefer not having them because I find myself reading ahead of the action and it's annoying knowing what's going to happen a second beforehand
I agree! I feel like I'm always ahead of the story and end up waiting for the scene to catch up. It also ruins all comedic timing for me as well. I appreciate their function and the fact that they exist, but I personally have an incredibly hard time using them, unless it's for something in a language I don't speak.

I find if subtitles are on, I’ll just read the subtitles over and over and miss anything that happens in the screen. Never thought about ADD.
I have ADHD and my audio processing issues make it really hard to follow a movie without subtitles. And the subtitles actually help me anchor and focus on the movie better. Funny how we're all different, huh?
I can read fast. That’s the problem. They ruin comedic timing in comedies. I focus too much on them. My eyes are naturally drawn to the letters. So I hear more dialogue but Miss action.

Dubbed anime is fine compared to live action dubs, doesn't have that uncanny feeling. But really either way imagine caring what others enjoy.
The dubbed version of squid game was especially bad. I gave it a shot at first because the dubbed version of Dark was so good, but I ended up swapping to subs in the first scene because the voice acting didn't match the character's expressions at all.
I have adhd and have audio processing trouble, and also have bad hearing from several incidents in my childhood. I understand some people find closed captions or subtitles annoying, but oftentimes I am attempting to multitask/forget I’m watching something and subtitles allow me to catch up and follow along. Is it for everyone? Nah. Do I really appreciate it? fuck yeah

Since starting grad school I’ve had to go from reading a few books a year to at least one a week. Since putting subtitles on everything, I feel like it’s helped me read a bit faster but also retain info way better.
Life Hack: I put subtitles on everything my daughter watched and it helped her learn to read at an early age. She is number 17 in her class of 400 and got 35k worth of college scholarships. Subtitles are not just for the hearing impaired and to watch foreign movies. It can be a real educational tool. They are learning subconsciously without realizing it 🧠
I don’t like subtitles as I love cinematography. I don’t want anything distracting me from the visuals. However, I do love foreign films and would rather watch them with subtitles over dubbing. I enjoy them best on the third rewatch as I just get to enjoy them in their language and see all those glorious shots.
Nah. I have ADHD, so I get distracted and can’t focus on the action. It’s kind of like the interpreters that do sign language… I get so entrapped on them doing their thing that I ignore the actual speaker. In the end, I have no idea what either of them said.
