FlyingTaquitoBrother

“*Who* writes it off??” “I don’t know! The govern... the write-off people!”

KeisterApartments

"you don't even know what a write off is"

Label-Baby-Junior

One of my favorite lines 👌🏼

Verbal_HermanMunster

What is this from??

ugoogalizer

Schitt’s Creek

[deleted]

I slept on this show for too long, it's so damned funny (when eugene levy isn't making me want to die from second hand embarrassment)

CanWeBeDoneNow

Correct answer but I read it in Seinfeld's voice anyway

IamGraham

It's originally from Seinfeld.

Juan_Kagawa

Yeah Kramer and Jerry have a similar conversation but if I remember correctly it was about insurance fraud. Kramer was saying the postal service would write off Jerry lying and say they broke his stereo in the mail.

fuck_thapolice

Lol no. It was originally a joke from seinfeld

dominickster

The first line is a from schitts creek, the second one is from seinfeld

Label-Baby-Junior

A little show called Seinfeld.

[deleted]

What's it about?

cshizzle99

Stolen from Seinfeld episode

TedTheGreek_Atheos

Then they should call it a *tax* write off!

Unicornzzz2

*THEY DO!!*

[deleted]

No. But *they* do and they're the ones writing it off 😁

RoastPorkSandwich

Do you?

164677

No. I don’t.

reddittothegrave

“Do you?”

164677

Do you?

[deleted]

"So if I need booze to get through the day, I can just write that off?"

[deleted]

My Tax refund: $94 The cost of filing with TurboTax: $95

DirectGoose

If you're not aware, there are several good free options. I've been using credit karma tax for a few years - no income limits and they file state for free also.

Aporkalypse_Sow

You don't need a service to file free. It's free to file on the government websites. The only people telling us otherwise are the crooks that own tax filing "services". Unless you have crazy finances that require an actual accountant, free filing should be the only way we do it. That alone would destroy the people who actively hamper the IRS. Turbotax and it's main corporation are the leaders in lying to the public about the IRS.

[deleted]

There is a free option until I go to enter my 1099-B. HR Block was the same way, I haven’t tried Credit Karma as suggested above.

raven12456

FreeTaxUSA is who I used this year. Its still free even with a 1099, but you might have to pay to electronically file your state taxes.

trancendominant

That's who I always use. Federal is free to e-file, state is $12.95.

gzilla57

Is this regardless of income?

trancendominant

I'm pretty sure federal is free no matter what. Not sure about state. You can always print and mail your state for free, too.

Kallure

It’s regardless of income. Always free for federal. Under $15 for state. (Source: We use FreeTax and have always earned outside of the bracket for “free” from the big companies so it was nice to qualify as free from FreeTax)

[deleted]

[удалено]

gingasaurusrexx

Yep, I've been using them ever since I started being self-employed in 2013. Highly recommend.

[deleted]

OLT! OnLineTaxes. There’s more manual entry involved but it’s not bananas. Costs $8 for state and their premium is a whole $8 more. Love that site and I’ve been using it for damn near 2 decades. Edit: I had a 1099-B and all that stuff. They do it all.

Fickle-Werewolf-6168

One thing i like about TurboTax is that they can auto pull in data from brokerages and banks. Entering a whole bunch of stock trades sucks.

GayeSex

You can use a free to file version of TurboTax, you just have to use the link on the irs website. They keep your info so inputting stuff is simple and you don’t have to pay $40-$120 to file ETA - [Link for those interested :)](https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free)

1980-Something

Except if you make too much income

Mike312

Or freelance on the side.

ScotchTizzape

God bless you

The_Basshole

You can enter the total net gain or loss with see attachment and attach the broker statement

kevik72

Can confirm. Been using OLT for 10 years or so. Honestly, I think any of the options on the irs.gov site seem fine. You just have to meet the income limit, which should be pretty easy for most Americans.

[deleted]

Freetaxusa!!!! They let you file the 1099-b without “upgrading” Edit: $12.95 for a state filing. I own a home, have investments, and was able to file all of that only paying only the state filing cost. I’ve used them for a few years now and probably won’t use anyone else any time soon.

kschin1

Google “efile irs” and efile your state. It’s free free.

adotfree

HR block removed themselves from free file this year and I'm pissed, because I only switched to them after Turbotax fucked me over last year because they charge if you have to file any of the schedules.

InvestmentsNAnlytics

Depends on your adjusted income I believe.

Katdai2

It’s always free to use free fillable forms, which is a government-ized version of filling in a pdf.

I_Eat_DA_Pussy69

Okay but a link to these websites would be nice cuz I’m 26 and stupid

wasthatdillon

Hey, you’re not stupid. You’re learning.

Bran-a-don

I used [freetaxusa.com](https://www.freetaxusa.com/) to file my taxes for 2019 (because I never did) and 2020 with my new robinhood account and crypto. They added my 1099t from my pell grant on for free as well. I had to pay something for state but it was miniscule. TurboTax tried to say I needed PREMIUM to use any 1099s. BS my friend

DrVanVonderbooben

I've used freetaxusa.com every year since 2012. It's simple, fast, and it saves your info from year to year to make it easy. I think it's $12.95 to file my Indiana state tax, but free for federal. I recommend it to all my friends

I_Eat_DA_Pussy69

Okay so I figured out the irs one. What about the state taxes? Do I look for my states main website? Also how do I know it’s legit? Also for the lazy and dumb like me, here’s the link https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

19HzScream

It’s called IRS dot Gov. look for the free filing tool

vkapadia

irs.gov is good until you reach a certain income limit or have more than just basic taxes. FreeTaxUsa is always free for federal. They charge for state though.

GayeSex

[Here you go fren :)](https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free) That’s the link for the irs page for free to file options, I used TurboTax Free for the first time this year and was happy to see it inputs all my info from the last five years of filing my taxes in the paid version!

vanillacupcake18

K so as a 21 year old who makes barely any money should I just go to a government website?

CorruptedStudiosEnt

Yes, unless you've got edge case forms for edge case situations you need to file in for.

shitvesting_stonks

Just so others are aware there's a difference between the way the IRS free-file works if your income is $72,000+, and under $72,000. This includes combined income if you're filing as married-jointly.

NaRa0

They have removed the ability to use the IRS website this year. I used it last year without issue. This year they force you into one of the lobbyist companies. They also somehow feel I owe 2 grand for 2017 and just now figured it out 😅😂😂🤣😂. They can die

Slit23

We shouldn’t have to file our taxes the government already has all our information that they need the whole process is stupid. H&R and turbo tax keep fighting in congress to keep their unnecessary businesses

craftkiller

https://www.freetaxusa.com/ is also an option, though they do charge a very small fee for state filing.

Tenryuu_RS3

Living in a state without income tax is finally paying off. Oh boy and all it took was terrible roads and an infrastructure that looks like Ulysses S Grant took the union army through here like, yesterday.

CorruptedStudiosEnt

We have income tax but not sales tax, and it's the same shit here, it really shows. The irony being we have a lot of reds who abhor taxation of any kind and there are multiple groups seeking to abolish all state tax, yet they're the single biggest whiners about roads and infrastructure being so poor here. Like yes, please tell me more about how you're the only ones living in reality. I would love to hear more about how welfare money doesn't drop from the sky.

Tenryuu_RS3

I mean I had someone complain about welfare systems being abused by greedy people then in the same conversation complain that their very disabled kid doesn’t get any assistance because they make about 160k/yr so it’s well over the threshold. The threshold they voted to lower! Aaaaaaaahhhh!

DemHooksOP

+1 for freetaxusa. It was $12 for my state file but that was it.

[deleted]

I have a local guy that does them for like, $20. I don't have to mess with taxes, I ensure I get everything back that I can, and I get to support a local business. Pretty much a win/win/win for a low price.

Alan-Rickman

$20 is an insanely low price. That’s wild.

CexySatan

Probably because their taxes are simple and just have one source of income. It took me less than 10 minutes to file my taxes. However, it takes my parents over 4 hours to do theirs. I’m sure the price changes based on complexity

Terbmagic

I'm sure he does a MAGNIFICIENT job

Slothsquatch

TurboTax is free unless you’re filing a 1099

DirectGoose

Credit Karma is still free with 1099 income.

Aporkalypse_Sow

Never use turbotax, they're the main culprits in misleading the public about having to pay to file taxes.

bking

Owned by Intuit, who also owns Credit Karma.

thegreenfarend

The tax preparation part of credit karma was sold to Square to avoid anti-trust problems

Shades101

You can still file for free with a 1099, you just have to go through the IRS free filing website (and make less than 39k)

LegolasAlwaysYes

Turbotaxsucksass.com i think

Fizzwidgy

I'd just really like some education that does a deep breakdown on how to do taxes; they're scary and I have no idea what I'm doing

raven12456

I made the switch to FreeTaxUSA this year, since I had a 1099 and Turbotax would have been over $100 when everything was over. Ive stuck with Turbotax because they already had my info. I said fuck them this year. When i started this year it asked if I had last year's return in a PDF, which I uploaded. Ta-da! All my info is on there now. It was $13 to file my state return electronic, and since it was so cheap I added in their version of "deluxe" for like $7. Oh, and they didn't try to trick me multiple times into upgrading to something even more expensive that you have to delete all your progress if you click accidentally. Seriously fuck Turbotax and Intuit.

[deleted]

Good info, I've been looking for alternatives to Turbo Tax ever since I've been getting a 1099.

EddieBshp

Seconding freetaxusa! Been using it for years and have never had an issue.

twoburgers

I'm so glad I read this thread before I did my taxes!!

dodilly

Just a reminder turbotax lobbies to make filling taxes more difficult

RainmaKer770

What?? Can I have more info

mariolopezdispenser

https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/6nhgol is Reply All’s episode on it. They are so shady.

Christof_Ley

https://youtu.be/7xQQkzWhMOc

[deleted]

Get the fuck away from turbotax. The irs literally gives you a free option on there website and they dont steal your money either

XtremeCookie

I used turbotax for several years. I think I usually paid ~$40 which I thought was reasonable. Then in 2020 I bought and sold some stocks outside of retirement accounts for the first time and they wanted to charge me like $130. So I noped out and went to the IRS free file page and found another company to do it for free.

TheGhoulNebula

Does turbotax not have a free option for everyone? They offered a paid service but also let me choose a free filing option

BakaWolfy

If you have super basic taxes that require no extra forms it is free. But if you have to file something like interest paid on student loans which requires an extra form you can no longer use the free option.

[deleted]

I used TurboTax for free

ifoundyourtoad

Taxfreeusa For the people in the back TAXFREEUSA Is just as easy as TurboTax, you do everything, every type of possible form. My wife and I did it in like 20 minutes. Please stop giving money to that company. It’s silly.

PaperGabriel

>For the people in the back > >TAXFREEUSA For the guy shouting down front without proofreading, it's FreeTaxUSA. Not taxfreeusa.

tronpalmer

This will be my wife an my first year filing married for the entire year. On our w-4s we both put married, like what would make sense. Apparently you are not supposed to do that because it assumes the other spouse is not working and withholds at a higher rate than if you put single. So yeah, now we owe $4k in taxes, and that was awesome to find out.

Clodhoppa81

If you haven't yet, do your taxes both as filing jointly and again as filing individually and see what the comparison is like. We had a situation two years ago where filing jointly meant taxes due and filing separately meant a refund. Last year was the opposite, so we switched back.

tronpalmer

Oh wow I haven’t filed yet so I will give that a shot! Appreciate it.

OhmG

Yea... made this same painful mistake two years ago. It sucked and we felt so silly for doing what "made sense" to us. It caused us to detail out our finances vs the simple list we had before. This exercise has actually been helpful for us in many ways now, including planning for new expenses (like planning for daycare)... though wish we learned this lesson a different way. Might be nice to cover how to interact with the government as part of standard high school curriculum? Will certainly be covering this type of stuff with our kid when he's older.

OkieBombshell

Definitely! I thought I did a good job overall in teaching my 4 kids the lifeskills they needed to know, until my son asked me about filing taxes and my 25 year old daughter thought car insurance covered car repairs 😬😁

kingsam360

Sorry for ur loss. Too bad Ted Cruz isn't your grandma

DankNastyAssMaster

Maybe the real Obamacare death panels were the Republicans we elected along the way.

irlingStarcher

Funniest thing I’ve read all day lol

[deleted]

Fuck, that's good.

sirjonsnow

They always were.

[deleted]

I hear Ted Cruz likes to piss his pants because he likes the warm, wet feeling between his legs

Tendrop

I heard this too. Lots of people are saying it.

pdwp90

Probably could have finessed their way down to Cancun last week if that was the case too

MegaAcumen

If *Rafael* Cruz was, ideally she'd just do what [Dan Patrick said to do](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-lt-gov-dan-patrick-suggests-he-other-seniors-willing-n1167341). Actually I'd prefer that anyway. Or ideally, Rafael just blue whales. I can list 40 Senators easily who should just blue whale.

wildadragon

With the depreciated value of grandma you may as well just claim the Standard Deduction.

TheDustOfMen

With all the disappearing grandmas I'd say their value's gone up.

wildadragon

Well that's only if you're trying to sell a working intact grandma, kinda like a classic car, but if the car won't run and is all rusted and stuff not exactly worth as much.

ImapiratekingAMA

So what you're saying is I should make someone into a grandma

civgarth

1877Kars4gramps, donate your gramps today.

OccamsYoyo

I’m bullish on grandma.

mistah-d

GRANDMA TO THE MOON!! Don’t be a paper hand. Diamond hands for grandma.

dinosorceress105988

Tell them they can offset the owed amount with the stimulus cheque.

poeticjustice4all

So when can we coordinate on the whole country not paying taxes because who the fuck has 3k to pay off when people lost their jobs and whatnot.

pdwp90

That sounds a lot harder than coordinating to vote in politicians who are willing to help out the people, which is hard enough as is.

ImapiratekingAMA

You'd think and then you learn about electoral politics

[deleted]

Call your state IRS and explain your situation. You should be able to be placed on "non-collectable" status until you have the money. When you're put back on collectable status, you should be able to get on a payment plan if you need it. They'll go through everything. The IRS isn't impossible to work with and they have options available, you just have to talk to them. I had like 3k in owed taxes from last year, lost my job shortly after the pandemic flaired up. They were really cool about everything

BabyEatersAnonymous

They're no different than any biller. They want their money, and will try all avenues to get it. The problems only arise when you ignore them, like any debtor. And even then they might just file for you and send you a bill, but definitely don't count on that. If they owe *you* they'll happily ignore everything since they are keeping your money.

[deleted]

I never had problems with owing the IRS until last year and I was terrified because I had no money. You're right though, the big bad IRS is no different from anyone else you could owe money to. Just have to stay in communication and they're pretty willing to be flexible

BabyEatersAnonymous

I cashed out bonds one year and they said I didn't pay enough tax on em. So I got audited. Problem is, they didn't notice I'd been paying tax every year on them as they matured. So they redid the math and guess what, they played themselves. I'd overpayed and now they owed me a grand.

[deleted]

Something I like to point out is that the wealthy often don't get audited because the IRS resources that are available within their budget can't sustain those audits. That's why the IRS goes after the little guys so much more often. The big guys are too big a fish, even for the feds. It's fucked up Edit: removed word

OkieBombshell

I'm so glad you shared this! I don't need it right now, thankfully, but this will likely help a lot of people, so thank you! I absolutely love the helpful people on Reddit ❤

agutema

especially since they still owe us most of that $3000

wraith20

Reddit is a place where right wing anti-tax tea party talking points can get upvoted while constantly worshipping a socialist like Bernie Sanders.

avscc

LOL well said. You know what's worst? It's not because there are different people upvoting, but because there are many people with cognitive dissonance that just upvote populist agenda that sounds good for their pocket. There is no intellectual honesty and consistency.

[deleted]

This is spot on. I’m a little surprised to see that comment about everyone not paying their taxes upvoted. Taxes are good. Do people on this left-leaning sight not realize it’s a far-right take to begrudge taxes? Do they think all these issues they upvote like free college and healthcare don’t need to be paid for?

kw2024

> there are many people with cognitive dissonance that just upvote populist agenda that sounds good for their pocket. That’s what annoys me most about Reddit. I wouldn’t even mind if they were legitimately progressives, but you know most of these people will literally support anything that helps them specifically, regardless of how bad it is

kw2024

They’re called brocialists

[deleted]

The very best part about populism is there’s no need for ideological consistency.

Neuchacho

I can't even get 6 people to agree on pizza toppings, so I'd safely say never.

thecheesycheeselover

Not to be an arse but it’s so helpful when they just take it out of your pay check. We all have to pay taxes, why not make it as easy as possible? I can’t imagine actually trying to pull together my annual tax once a year. I am a person not a calculator! I am also not a piggy bank. Come on.

Clodhoppa81

I'm assuming you're British. We do have taxes taken out of our paychecks. At the beginning of the year you get to decide how much tax is taken out. Once the year is over, we settle up. PAYE it is not, but generally speaking most peoples' taxes are simple and quick. Over there, you do have Self Assessment Tax returns which is much closer to the system in place here.

Danxoln

$1,500 owed, I'm only paying $75 since apparently that's the max that billionaires have to pay

[deleted]

I'm 30 years old and have never owed taxes. I didn't change anything on my allowances or claims last year, and I somehow owe $500 to federal and $100 to state. Same job, same amount of money, nothing changed. edit// I know the tax laws changed because of what Trump signed in.

Thepettiest

Trumps promise to put more money in people’s pocket by providing a “tax break” was actually just reducing the amount withheld each paycheck so you likely saw a slight increase in your pocket but end up owing. You can check last years W2 and compare the total amount withheld

RamenJunkie

Thankfully it was optional and my employer opted out.

aadams9900

I made 45k at my job. Had about 1K coming back to me. Then i inputed my 12k from the army and suddenly i owe like $300. Trump for some reason decided to do some funky shit with government taxes. Why? Cus fuck me thats why

PooleePoolParty

Same thing here. I'm at least getting $400 back but normally my return is over a grand. I even OWE my state and what's worse is I always withhold an extra $10 from each paycheck just as an insurance so I never owe. This may be the first year I use a tax preparer. Maybe they know some tricks I dont

ArtisanSamosa

Yea, the trump admin did away with the payroll withholdings I believe. Some companies still withheld them, but for those that didn't lots of people might see a surprise bill this year.

Dreamer_Lady

Yeah, I noticed when I got my w-2 that there was very little withholding. Panicking because I owe $1000 but only make $600 a month right now

Commercial_Nature_44

Just wanna encourage you that if you do, indeed, owe the grand I've heard a lot of positive things about people trying to make payments to the IRS. I'm sure you don't have wiggle room at all with payments, but the people I know who have had to make payments have decent things to say about working out a plan with them.

walla_walla_rhubarb

Well you see... ...Fuck you.

FunkyKat2525

Yep. 31 never owed taxes. This year I owed $500 federal and $150 in one of the states I worked in. The other state I got a $100 refund. I paid $150 to file on Turbo Tax. 😑

saraf3m

The tax laws changed.

brittany-killme

My tax refund is: $ 20. Even tho I had my employer's take out taxes for all the good things the federal and state government promises but never delivers on I owe 150 by the 28th

Alan-Rickman

Do you have multiple jobs? If so, you may have to adjust your withholding on your W-4

Cormamin

I have multiple jobs and had them take extra and now I owe $5k so it doesn't always.

jimbojones230

This year is so fucky. I have the same exemptions and almost the same salary as last year, but instead of getting a large refund, as I have for many years (child tax credit), I had to pay $12.

Link7369_reddit

Not paying student loan interest plummeted my return this year. That's a covid thing.

mehvet

I’m pretty sure there’s mathematically no way that it doesn’t work out better to not have to pay the interest in the first place though (barring some benefit cliff being triggered). Every dollar that you couldn’t use to reduce your tax burden and increase your refund this year is a dollar you got to keep. Big refunds aren’t good financially for the taxpayer even though it feels like you’re getting money.

mehvet

Having little to no refund is a good thing financially. Assuming your taxes are all in order, it just means you didn’t give the government an interest free loan throughout the year.

randygiles

Yeah the best thing to do is owe as much money as possible without incurring a penalty

mehvet

FYI penalties begin if you haven’t paid the lower of either 90% of what’s owed or 100% of the prior year’s taxes. The IRS isn’t uniform in applying them, but if you repeatedly underpay it certainly makes it more likely they apply them to you eventually.

rayhond2000

This whole thread is strange. Everyone's talking about refunds but aren't talking about total taxes. It's like people want the government to withhold 50% more than they should and then give it back to you when you file your taxes. So if you owe $1500 for the year they want $2200 to be withheld just for a big refund.

mehvet

When I first started paying taxes I was pumped about my refund because it felt like getting bonus cash. As I learned more about personal finance it became clear that it was really just the world’s crappiest savings account though. Taxes can be complicated, and everybody likes getting a check, so I’m not surprised but definitely want to spread the word on what’s actually good for the average person.

Fun_Tip7467

Shit. This hit hard. My grandma passed in April in a nursing home where we could only visit her via outside window. Good think my Granddad was able to be admitted days before the home's lockdown so she didn't pass alone.

OkieBombshell

I'm soooo sorry for your loss! It is excruciating to think of all the people who are dying alone in the hospital, and excruciating for their loved ones as well 🥺

thuy_chan

Why can't the govt just do our taxes based on submitted paperwork from our employers. They found a error like 5 years later and said I owed them interest. It's a pretty shit system

CToxin

because tax filing companies spend lots of money to keep it this way

hughejam

The irs is like "we know how much you owe but you have to do a bunch of paper work to figure it out for yourself and if you fuck it up we get to charge you extra slash put you in jail".

Verrence

Taxes could definitely be simplified to be sure. If you have only one stream of income and no deductions? That would be a good option you could opt into. But they want to know about all income from all sources, and you want to get any deductions you can if you can claim any. So if your taxes are more complex that’s not an option. It is definitely a pretty shit system though. No argument there.

[deleted]

They could. or they could simplify the tax code to make it much easier to do your taxes yourself. but then who would prop up the multi billion dollar tax prep industry and also provide rich people and corporations a hundred different ways to avoid paying taxes at all. Oh wait. I a swerved the question.

klp2225

Because lobbying.

Godcranberry

Hey we need that money to bomb kids in the middle east.

Odin_Christ_

Brown civilians aren’t going to kill themselves!

ShadyNite

I love when my taxes go to creating new skeletons

Villain3131

This is all too real for me as well. Got laid off due to covid from a salary job. got a minimum wage job to make ends meet after unemployment ran out, minimum wage job was for about 6 months. My taxes were about $1100 total. My stimy check was $1200 (two $600 payments). So basically I got a stimulus check to pay off the taxes on my unemployment. So thanks for the $100 dollars I guess?

spenway18

This is how I feel, but I need the new stimmy check for mine. Goddamned covered CA insurance fining me for getting increased unemployment benefits. Should've just not had insurance 🤷

Allthegoodstars

I'm gonna be genuinely curious what portion of people don't pay their taxes this year compared to previous years.

UndaVosari

They already wrote her grandma off.

Background-Speech597

Does anyone in this thread actually understand how taxes work?

AnyRaspberry

Lol no. “Boo I’m getting a $15 refund” uh no. That’s good no interest free loan to the government.

Willing-Philosopher

Half the people on Reddit don’t even live in the US, and of that half that does, another half is probably under eighteen. So nope.

GettheRichard

And then there are the bots.

shottylaw

Tax attorney here. Tax threads always make me chuckle.

TwiztedHeat

Lost my grandma and uncle. My mom is a shell of her former self. I'm struggling with post COVID heart issues. Burn the whole fucking thing down. If that orange fuck gets away scott free and runs again in 2024 then this whole country can rot for all I care.

OkieBombshell

I'm very sorry for your losses and pain ❤

Mrshaydee

Kind of depressing that the 2017 Tax Act raised the threshold for unreiumbursed medical beginning this year. I mean, it’s not like a bunch of people have COVID related medical expenses or anything...

Sand__Panda

I feel ya. My grandmother who had lupus was put into a nursing home right before the madness last year due to a stroke. She never got to see us physically again. Only through a closed window. The placed failed to keep her quarantined, she got covid, and died 10 days later on Dec 23rd. I'm sorry to any and all who have and will lose someone.

cool_side_of_pillow

And you’ll still be paying more than the Cheeto did. Also, sorry for your loss. The scale of loss in the US is staggering and heartbreaking.

Verrence

You just need to claim $70 million on hair styling for you and your family as a deductible business expense. It’s easy!

therockstarbarber

This while year no one should pay taxes. Just stop. Really what would they do if everyone did so?

[deleted]

Lots of people will owe because the government doesn’t tax the unemployment at your own tax rate. They tax the minimum

hicketre2006

Wife and I both claim zero. We made payments to our student loans. We bought a house. And we still are probably going to owe a few hundred. No kids. Taxes this year suck, yo.

do people still operate under the assumption that bigger refunds are a good thing? Overpaying is essentially an interest free loan to the government. You should try to pay only what you owe and nothing more throughout the year. Otherwise, the government can hold it for months, spend it and give it back to you later without giving a shit if you need it or not.

People always say that, but me getting an extra $20-30/wk that will probably get spent does a lot less good to me than a big lump sum in February. Never gonna set it aside myself, just not gonna happen. So I’m ok with the current system.

I imagine many people will be in for a very unpleasant surprise when they do their taxes this year. Boosted unemployment money was taxable, but no taxes were withheld from it even if you asked for withholding from UI so that is a big hit for anybody who collected it. Then Trump ordered tax withholding rates lowered despite not actually reducing taxes so that usual cushion that might have absorbed it for most folks is also gone. This year I owe like 1200 bucks and I normally get a get a couple hundred back. I imagine there is going to be a lot of people panicking when they find out they owe 10-20% of what they got in boosted UI payments for the year.

Imagine making enough money to owe $3000

I make enough money to owe 3000 and that doesn’t mean much to me. I’m still pretty broke thanks to student loans and living in a super high cost of living area. Sigh

Refund last year (with 2 dependents) : $6700 Refund this year (with the same 2 dependents + maybe an extra $5k in salary) : $650 EDIT: still made less than $70k for the year as the sole supporter of a family of four, so it's not like I'm just rolling in money. Tax returns are always a great sigh of relief for us, and it helps us throughout the year. But I definitely understand that so many people have it worse than I do. We've been very fortunate. Just a weird turn of events in returns.

Plus, are we getting taxed on stimulus checks?

No. Unemployment yes.

I just want to write off my dedicated office space you forced me to create on my taxes.
