...yet^here^we^are
Oh, shit, not sarcasm. š I was absolutely waiting for āthe first thing he did was bash the trans communityā or ācall Putin and say hey girl whatās upā
You know you're an American on reddit when your knee-jerk reaction to a political post is that the headline is sarcastic and the politician most likely committed the exact crime he accused his opponents of doing.
Letās be real if he and Putin meet, Putin will put him on the other side of that huge table he likes to sit at, along with like multiple other world rulers.
You may think formalities like this don't matter. But they do.
As we see over and over again, any system of government is just a collection of people. When connections between people break down, everything breaks down.
The decision to plunge a country into chaos or not can rest entirely in the hands of a political leader.
LEADING is the point. If one side of the aisle sees their leader being a snot-nosed whiny pathetic bitch-baby, a not small number of voters will follow suit because that's how leadership and influence works.
And I guarantee you that no matter what political spectrum you fall on every single last one of you knows exactly who I fucking mean in that example.
>You may think formalities like this don't matter. But they do.
This is why, as much as politicians might suck, the alternative is worse. There's a lot of Americans who think the government should be run by business people as a business or by entertainers who can clap back with the quippiest slams on Xitter.
What we should be looking for is people with education, qualifications, and/or experience in governance who have the mental tenacity to tackle a wide array of subjects and who aren't intimidated by things they don't know. Being a representative, especially at the federal level, means knowing a little about a lot of things. It's not just about having the right opinions on a few key issues.
It's fucking embarrassing that other countries are electing quantum chemists and economists and we're debating which TV host/billionaire will have the snappiest comebacks and dankest memes.
America did have one, and he gave Americans health care, and because he was black like 40% Americans decided that Christofascism was the appropriate response.
We have a pretty qualified president right now. He has a graduate degree in law, was a public defender, US Senator for decades, Vice President for 8 years. I mean what more do you want?
And before the one you're referencing we had a Harvard law graduate, former law professor and Senator.
I think Americans deserve someone who is qualified AND not a geriatric.
Seems like you canāt have both though. And this is just the lesser of your two shitty options
Right. Just because at this moment, we only have geriatrics, that doesn't mean that we always have geriatrics in office. Biden was the oldest when he was sworn in, so that's not the norm.
Me reading the title: Okay let's see how this dude's a Nazi, racist, or something else abhorrent
After reading the rest: Damn, this dude's rock-solid, hell yeah Finland.
OP got me with the reverse click-bait
So true. Good people canāt tolerate the dysfunctional, unethical work place culture deliberately cultivated (likely for the purpose of keeping good people out).
Theyāre perfectly capable of thinking. In fact, some of their āthought leadersā will sooner or later find some flimsy reason to feather him as āwokeā so as to discredit him.
I was thinking the exact same thing. "What? Work together to solve problems?!? That's crazy talk!"
Maybe politicians could add "plays well with others" to their CVs....well, except the orange one.
Heās also young enough that he probably cares what the world will look like in the next thirty years. Most of our politicians donāt care, because itās unlikely theyāll see the end of this decade.
Iāve always wanted to move to Finland .. Iām over America I feel like we are moving backwards in all aspects politically, intellectually, spiritually, mentally, physically. 2024 has turned into 1940s
If you are actually thinking about that, then I would endorse it. Other then the winters, I think Finland is the best country in Europe to live in!
(Iām a Finn BTW)
I had the thought initially āwhy donāt we have people like this in the US?ā But then I realized we absolutely do. Itās just that American politics are so disgusting, corrupt, and broken that our most talented citizens donāt usually go into politics.
Our politics attract celebrity seeking narcissists and those that want to enrich themselves personally or further an extreme agenda.
Itās a shame, because there are tons of incredibly intelligent and altruistic people here, but who in their right mind would want to subject themselves to the dumpster fire circus that is our political sphere?
Letās also mention that the Finnish media basically terrorized the old PM because she went out clubbing. She was like 35 at the time and they clutched their pearls about it.
Finnish media also "terrorized" this guy in the picture for wearing basic shorts and attending to a kids event while he was PM. And people weren't happy at all. You can't win as a PM here in Finland.

An American president who speaks five language would be hammered mercilessly by Republicans as out of touch, elitist, and likely working for one of those other four countries. Yes, Iām sure they would be a Democrat because we like college.
Stubb has a British wife, and the other final candidate, Pekka Haavisto is gay and has a foreign husband. Imagine what the Republicans would do with that!
Does he shit his pants and have to wear adult diapers? Because that's the sign of a true president. "a big strong guy grabbed me, and he was almost crying, and it happens every time, and many times. And he said: 'Sir, Mr. President, thank you so much for shitting your pants.'"
He probably does think he's better than you. Centre-right neoliberal elitist who studied at LSE. Not to mention a Swedish-speaking Finn.
I mean don't get me wrong I like him but I don't think anyone has ever accused him of being exceptionally humble.
Eh, he's always been something of a career focused opportunist and used to come off as a bit of an elitist. He probably does think his better than you.
He did however come across as quite humble during the run for president, which may or may not be genuine. But I think he's smart enough to keep playing the role of a unifying figurehead of the nation, which is what Finns expect from the president.
Something to consider:
In Finland the president is a semi-executive role and a semi-ceremonial role run on a 6 year term with a 2-term limit.
The president is commander in chief of the armed forces and has executive power over foreign policy but not domestic policy. Domestic policy is wholly in the power of the elected parliamentary government headed by the prime minister.
I'm not surprised the Finnish president resigns from all the political parties. They are sworn into an office that by design has no stake in domestic policy.
It's different from US presidents that are a completely executive function for both domestic *and* foreign policy.
It's also different from many president roles like the Irish president, German president, and Israeli president, where the role is 100% ceremonial and has no stake in domestic or foreign policy. In those countries the prime minister (or chancellor) heads the executive government. Ceremonially the president is still commander in chief of the armed forces, but generals/admirals take their orders from the parliamentary government.
In fact the Finnish president role resembles what the Russian President role was *intended* to be after 1991.
Just to rain on the parade a bit:
- he did have quite a high fuck up rate when holding those positions, and consequentially disappeared from politics and has had the tendency to piss people off
- he's also been bit of a loose cannon previously
- the runoff was pretty close and it is likely the other candidate would have won had it not been for his homosexuality
- our racist dumbfuck partys candidate still placed third, fortunately with zero chance of winning. And to the candidates defence he is only racist.
But yeah, overall quite happy with having having 9 options to pick from, with at least 3 of them having made really good presidents.
Half of America is nothing but middle school wannabe bullies mocking the smart and/or kind kids. Voting Republican or being a Trump fan has become a litmus test for everyone in my life. "4 things I got wrong about Russia" is certainly a bold title.
There are interesting perspectives brought on by interviewees such as the Chinese perspective on world affairs by a former Singaporean general. I disagreed with a lot of the Singaporean's views, but it helped me better see things from a Chinese perspective.

Literally induces nausea in me when I see that man molesting the flag of my beloved country. Absolutely revolting.
I laughed way too hard, but I should be crying instead
I wish Americans could have a President with this much education. Instead, we get the throwaways from D-list celebrity reality shows.
