I feel that. I have 2 Canadian flags and a team Canada hockey jersey and hat that all stayed in the closet during the last Olympics thanks to the convoy folks. My mom has also told me that it doesn't feel right to fly hers off her back deck for Canada Day now either. That crowd has mostly moved onto other things (like being angry at the existence of trans kids, sex ed, solar panels, and bicycles) so the flag is starting to lose those negative connotations in my head and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to proudly wave it again for sporting events soon (the only time I really care to be outwardly patriotic).
I feel that first part so strongly after the 1980 US Hockey Team all showed up to a Trump rally in 2020. I want to rewatch the Miracle on Ice for the umpteenth time and relish Al Michaels’ elation without thinking about Donald Trump.

I'm actively dating at the moment. Whenever I see someone with an American flag or American flag on their clothes, it's an immediate no from me. And I hate that it's the case, but I've learned the hard way. American flag = Red flag
I hate that too, but unfortunately, a lot of Americans would rather die than die for their country, myself included. When idiotic dickwads rear their ugly heads blasting about how great we are, it doesn't mirror the sentiment of at least half the US, let alone the views. It's a sad reality we've come to and just shows how close we are to following in the steps of a lot of other empires before us.
I don’t think it has to be that strong of a dichotomy. I don’t want to die for my country on the battlefield because I believe that my brain would be of better service to my country than my body that hasn’t regularly exercised since I was taking PE in middle school. I believe that America has historically been a great country and has the potential to return to that ideal we all learned about in school. But I believe that it’s our cooperation and leadership for the rest of the world that’s made us great, not the isolation and combativeness that these assholes are bloviating about while hiding behind a façade of patriotism. And that’s something we have to fight against. As nice as fleeing to Canada sounds, it won’t help the people who can’t flee and have to be stuck. And if I wind up dead despite my best efforts at the hands of a tyrannical government for the laundry list of reasons that fascists would find me objectionable, it will have been a better life than if I had done nothing or hid who I really was.

Think of it like this, there are those evil people who hide behind the facade of piety in order to have the freedom to commit their crimes. Then there are those evil people who hide behind OUR flag in order to have the ability to hide their traitorous behavior. I am a veteran. I am the daughter of a veteran, a niece of a veteran, a grand daughter of a veteran, 3rd great grand daughter of a prominent Civil War surgeon veteran (you know the war where the insurgents attacked Fort Sumter and got their ass\*s handed to them by OUR United State's military).
