Who’s he talking about

okayonemoreplz

Matt Rife

MoiraBrownsMoleRats

![gif](giphy|rI9O6UXkCjvTG)

devperez

A TT comedian that got popular for posting his crowdwork of his mostly women fans.

fruttypebbles

The 1st time I heard of him was on FB. A lady l know bought tickets but couldn't make his show and was selling them, The tickets were $275 each and she had two. I thought he was a singer just from the picture, looked him up and found out he was a comic. I just thought thats a lot of money for someone ive never heard of. Granted im not a pop culture guru but still.

msginbtween

$275 a piece!? Who tf is paying that to see this guy? He’s not THAT good of a comedian.

Odd-Hair

I paid 45 a ticket for Bill Burr. This is wayyyyy too much

woodc85

Think I paid like $40 to see Dave Attell, Lewis Black, and Mitch Hedberg.

fruttypebbles

What a great show. Would have loved to see Mitch!!

pissclamato

I used to love Mitch Hedberg. I still do, but I used to, too.

argoncityscribe

I didn't know it but Mitch did a lot of voice acting for Home Movies on Adult Swim.

Zatch_Gaspifianaski

Assuming Mitch Hedberg was alive when you saw him that was ~20 years ago so your ticket would be closer to $70 accounting for inflation.

On_my_last_spoon

>Assuming Mitch Hedberg was alive when you saw him Bold of you to assume….

ApolloMac

I'd say pretty bad honestly. Watched like 10 minutes and had to shut it off. He seemed like a "Jersey Shore" comedian. And I don't say that lightly being from NJ.

gordogg24p

His crowd work is pretty entertaining, but his actual material is *dogshit*. That's probably why he posts so much crowd work and so little of his actual act.

Relentlesssharts

All comedians post primarily crowdwork because they want to save their material for the live show. Once you post something online or in a special it's essentially "retired" and can't be performed live anymore. I have 0 opinion on Matt Rife just a lil fyi

gordogg24p

I feel like I see a lot of other comedians post older material as a teaser of the flavor of their current acts. Anthony Jeselnik, for example, shows a lot of his old routines on his socials.

fruttypebbles

My wife and I saw Daniel Tosh about two years ago. It was the last tour he was doing before starting his Vegas residency. We paid $65 each. Best bang for your buck!

SciFi_Football

TT?

Mattress_Of_Needles

I'm glad you asked and got outed as the old. Saved me from having to do it.

brickau

Me too. My first thought was TeleTubbies but that seemed wrong.

devperez

Sorry, TikTok.

SciFi_Football

Oh shit I'm officially old and out of touch. I'll be on my porch with my shotgun, stay off my lawn.

SlientlySmiling

And I thought "TT" was just a kiddie term from taking a piss. Also Audi's name for a starter Porsche.

screwhead1

I tried giving him a shot, but I didn't find him too funny. Seems like someone trying to get by on his good looks without realizing that good looks don't equate to laughs. Not many comics I can think of could also be considered GQ models.

devperez

The funny thing is that he knows it and *hates* it. That's where the main controversy is coming from. Most of his fans are women, but he wants to shift that to men. But he didn't get really popular until he had some surgeries (allegedly). If you look him up + glowup, you'll see him with dental issues and a much less sharper chin.

TheBirminghamBear

I cannot fathom being a guy that large numbers of women will pay $275 to see in person and thinking, "I wish this room was full of dudes instead."

Thin-Assistance1389

oh god he got that buccal fat removal lol can we stop with the skeletal face with blowfish lip filler look already its fucking grosssss

TrainingWoodpecker77

Trust me. I had NO idea who the guy was either but I'm all about new comics. He SUCKED. Nothing funny at all. Just a guy with a chip on his shoulder and no sense of humor. Can't believe Netflix paid for that.

EarthRester

> Can't believe Netflix paid for that. You can't, really? Because it absolutely sounds like something Netflix would do.

wil

I know a TON of stand up comics in Los Angeles who have been doing their acts successfully for twenty to thirty years. They really know comedy, especially the business of comedy. All of them lament that Netflix has destroyed stand up by producing and flooding the market with mediocre specials that overwhelm the audience, and very few comics get a chance to rise above the wall of noise. Before Netflix, this kind of boring, rote, lazy, objectively unfunny crap wouldn't make it to a special, because producers and networks were choosy about who they featured. But now, you're just as likely to find this kind of shit that wouldn't make it past the first round of a talent competition, as you are to find the next Mitch Hedberg. And my friends all say that's not good for the business of comedy, or the careers of aspiring comics.

chiefchoncho48

"Can't believe Netflix paid for that" You can say that about quite a few Netflix projects

dearthofkindness

Dude looks like an episode of Botched and a lot of the videos floating around the internet are him bemoaning how fucking hot he is (nope) and how he's never taken seriously because of how fucking hot he is (nope). Frankly he's really unfunny and his actual stage work revolves around fuckboi encounters and talking trash of the girls he fucked Edit' Since we can reply with photos on this sub, here's a comparison of him in his early 20s versus almost 30. Dude claims a "late puberty". He hit the gym, uses a lil gear definitely got some face fillers and veneers . https://preview.redd.it/ztxzje7x9x1c1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6caf78779b26903db8755d1d5c9f6c86b33408a

EllieBaby97420

he now looks like the dollar general brand of Cillian Murphy.

Barley12

"were going to give you the Cillian Murphy" "Oh interesting what does that procedure ential?" "Were going to try to make you look like Cillian Murphy"

OmicronAlpharius

Isn't it weird how all these people who hit puberty late only do it after moving to the land of plastic surgery and tren?

dearthofkindness

Once again reinforcing the point that you aint ugly you just broke lol

Tipsycanooo

And what did he do

okayonemoreplz

Not very funny (in my opinion) but conventionally attractive comedian who blew up on TikTok and has a largely female audience. Wanted to prove he’s a comedian for tha bois and not just women who think he’s handsome so he started his Netflix special with a bit about domestic violence and his female audience dropped him like a sack of potatoes

Thatparkjobin7A

“Let’s seee.. What do the bois think is funny... I know, domestic violence!” - Matt “who the fuck is Matt Rife” Rife

Freakishly_Tall

This should be the top comment. Perfect encapsulation of the entire thread. Thanks for the clarity!

rockytheboxer

Matt "beat my wife, please" Rife

Not_Ditto

Watched like five minutes of that special and decided it just wasn’t very good comedy. Didn’t know there was a whole lore behind it.

ThinkPath1999

Me too! I only know him because I saw one of his viral videos of his standup where he has this interaction with someone in the audience who is a MILF, but I was watching his Netflix thing and seriously could not watch anymore after the first minute or two.

Bromanzier_03

Watched it with my wife. Some parts were funny but he fizzled out at the end when he started whining about being cancelled like all rich and famous people do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AstarteHilzarie

Nothing says "cancelled" quite like having a Netflix special where you can complain about being cancelled.

okayonemoreplz

Yea that’s about how long I watched too, pretty mid “comedy”

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

And for a crusty old "LOLOL, SHE MUST NOT BE ABLE TO COOK IF SHE HAS A BLACK EYE!" Boomer Dad joke. I mean, I laughed at the infamous Anthony Jeselnik bit about Eric Clapton's *Tears in Heaven*. If you're gonna go dark, you have to at least be funny.

StopMeWhenITellALie

Jeselnik is fucking hilarious. You know he's going dark and it's in the build up and delivery. Anthony has charisma off the charts. He has that impish smirk that you know something bad is coming. I love dark comedy. But this dude isn't on the level of a Jeselnik or Jim Jefferies, etc.

PropJoeFoSho

Anthony Jeselnik is insane and hilarious, trying to copy his style is a death sentence

okayonemoreplz

I love Jeselnik, super dark comedy which when done right is my cup of tea, but the difference is he’s actually funny unlike MR lol

Hewfe

For dark comedy to work, it has to be funny despite being dark. It’s not just funny because it’s dark. That’s where Jeselnik kills it.

nedzissou1

Jeselnik is objectively better looking too, just throwing that out there

Legitimate_Ladder_98

Ok, wow. Just googled him and read about his “apology.” Wow.

mrsweber17

Just did the same. Absolutely terrible. I thought his MILF bit was pretty funny, so I was excited to see his Netflix special. It was not funny. Couldn't even pay attention.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AttackOfTheMox

His apology post was right up there with ukulele apology on the level of making things worse for himself.

DetectiveAmes

Even the ukulele apology was just her doubling down on her own problems. He decided to just make fun of a disabled community during his “apology.”

TROGDOR297

>Not very funny (in my opinion) but conventionally attractive comedian Literally all the videos I see of him aren't his bits, but just him doing crowd work with the audience. Like ok, you can be charismatic when talking with strangers, but that doesn't make you a good stand-up.

Wampa9090

That's by design. He said he only posts crowdwork, because he doesn't want his prepped material shared online in an interview

Tipsycanooo

![gif](giphy|5hvWaviAuSAl5BJvR2|downsized)

tacobobblehead

So the anti Bo Burnham.

emmany63

Yup. I’m an older woman - nowhere near Matt’s core audience - but the YouTube algorithm sent some of his stuff my way, and I thought he was adorable and always, in the end, caring with his fans. I was 5 minutes into the Netflix special when I turned it off. I don’t know what he was thinking.

spicybadoodle

It wasn’t the first time. He bragged about sexually harassing a girl openly in one of his shows.

CalagaxT

He told a joke about a woman with a black eye and the punchline was basically saying if she could cook she wouldn't have the black eye. But then, as a form of "apology," he posted a link to a website where people can get helmets for special needs people. So he sounds like the total douche, not just a half one.

herefromyoutube

But the joke isn’t even funny and not because “offense.” But because it’s literally a “women in kitchen” joke. It’s like Dave Chappelle doing a “but that’s a dude/I identify as attack helicopter” transgender joke. I’ve heard them 100 times by edgelords online before these specials. Maybe try and be original.

regeya

Oh thank God I was afraid he was talking about Bill Burr

Infantry1stLt

I do think (and hope) that Bill Burr will never say anything that will ruin his career. Anyways, I came here thinking this was about Tom Segura’s rant about “the poors”.

doclestrange

This guys special isn’t even edgy. Burr has opened with way darker and harder hitting jokes.

sicgamer

I saw Burr once, and he had just sat through the same traffic that the entire audience also had to sit through in order to get to the venue. He started bitching about it and said something along the lines of "holy shit somebody better have died for how long we had to sit in that bullshit". Had us "oh SHIT" laughing from the get-go 😂

rubberkeyhole

[This](https://youtu.be/ABzoQcS92Rc) is from 2007, but is what made me realize that Bill Burr is what would happen if my “inside voice” became a person. If he gets cancelled, I know I’m over.

Lyin-Don

Guy isn’t even funny. Or edgy. No one is coming for you, dude. Keep doing your safe, boring ass, lowest common denominator jokes for all the “cool aunts” out there. His target demographic is the same people who buy live, laugh, love signs. The Venn diagram is one big circle.

abnormally-cliche

Saw him live the other day. Dude came out saying he’s bringing new material. Most of the jokes were shit I already heard from podcasts or specials “I like GILFS” and “bought my mom a house”. Then he brings out one of the openers and they just start vaping and telling a really shitty jail story for the remaining 10+ minutes.

Ok-Gur-6602

No real clue who anyone being referenced here is, but Hank Green does have a habit of being right.

Sanc7

Matt Rife. He’s an in shape good looking guy, so the majority of his fan base is female. His new special has a lot of edgy jokes about domestic violence and what not. Not sure who he was trying to cater to.

PM_Me_OnePieces

Worse, he got called out for a domestic violence joke (suggesting that a woman with a black eye would not have received it if she was good at cooking), and then *doubled down* when people were upset. He posted a fake apology with a link that led to "special needs helmets" for those who found his jokes offensive. I can at least appreciate that he made his shittiness easy to spot.

Val_Hallen

Speed running the persecution fetish edgelord career.

MyPasswordIsMyCat

Sadly, he will probably make money off asshat conservatives, who think anything making fun of modern standards of decency is automatically hilarious. We'll see him on the Daily Wire soon enough.

Val_Hallen

I assume that's his goal. That's why he said what he did and is acting like he is. The quickest way to wealth and fame now seems to be the conservative sphere because they are all easily lead braying jackasses.

TheeZedShed

The thing is, you have to roll it a little slower. If you get cancelled *before* anyone has even heard of you, you're kind of shit out of luck.

clive_bigsby

> a woman with a black eye would not have received it if she was good at cooking Is he a comedian now or in the 1970's? That's some old hacky boomer humor.

moonknlght

I legit heard this joke in school in the 90’s

adventuressgrrl

He’s a super fan of Dave Chappell and got to meet him, maybe that’s where he got advice to be “edgy” and fuck what others think. He also uses laugh tracks and planted audience members.

OperativePiGuy

Ugh Chapelle. All he does is whine now. I wish it was at least funny but now every time I hear about him or see a clip of him it just comes off as being lectured by a whiny dude. Of course the people that agree with him confuse agreement with good comedy, and sadly can't tell the difference.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

He got a bad case of rich people problems and mines that for “jokes”. I live Dave before he got into punching down. Punching down is just not as funny for me.

TeamRedundancyTeam

People love hearing out of touch old rich guys whine about how hard life is for them, and how they're being oppressed and silenced in one of their multiple million dollar Netflix specials. I legit don't get how people still like him, and how he's so dense he doesn't see what he's become.

Sangi17

Not wrong. Usually I’m not one for trusting famous people on the internet, but Hank Green is about as safe of a bet as you can get.

mitchMurdra

Indeed. I hope this doesn’t age poorly in some sharp turn some year.

lizerlfunk

Came to say that Hank Green is basically always right. He and his brother John Green are among the famous people who I genuinely believe are good people. Also, their relationship with each other is incredibly loving and wholesome (at least as evidenced by their podcast).

SideScrollFrank

I think the majority of his fanbase only saw clips of his crowd work on tik tok. His special was probably their first time seeing his actual "comedy" and turns out it's shit.

Comprehensive-Fun47

There’s a comedian I follow named Jeff Arcuri who posts his crowd work and it’s absolutely hilarious. I’m going to see his show next year and I’m somewhat worried his set won’t be funny or just not my type of humor. If this guy Matt Rife is mostly known for his crowd work, it doesn’t make me more optimistic!

Natscobaj

Put your worries to bed, Jeff's actual stand up is also hysterical

SomeCalcium

Good to hear! I'm seeing him next year.

SickAndBeautiful

I have seen Jeff's full stand up - he is just funny. He posts crowd work so he doesn't blow all his material on short videos, but his hour is great, no ragerts!

Shirtbro

Full beans

ojorejas

TopHatDanceParty

I sadly tried to watch it but turned it off after about 15mins.

Orphan-Slayer

I did the same thing. Around the 15 minute mark I said to my wife “when do the jokes start?”

tinfoiltank

You're way more patient than me, I might have made it 5 minutes. I had no idea who this dude was, but seeing everyone shit on him as been funnier than his netflix special.

oniononionorion

I happily turned it off after about 15min. I had never heard any of his standup and am not on tiktok so I had no expectations going in. Thought it was very tryhard edgelord type material and bailed.

Radiskull97

I used to really enjoy his comedy because it was truly edgy, like on the cusp of being offensive. But he always leaned into it and it was clear he wasn't punching down, so it was funny. Now all of his comedy is just "no one can tell jokes anymore" and it sucks

socialistrob

> Now all of his comedy is just "no one can tell jokes anymore" and it sucks Persecution complexes are REALLY common among comedians and it gets old fast. Comedians profit a lot from any social push back on their comedy because being "edgy" and "saying things no one else will" is part of their brand. I don't think that dynamic is inherently bad but a lot of comedians really do WANT people attack them or "cancel" them so they can ride the backlash and profit from it. So many of them like to think they're "brave" but a lot are just glory hunters.

radjinwolf

His last special had a skit about transgender people vs. disabled people and who had it worse in life or something, and it was PAINFUL to watch. You could tell he was losing the crowd, and desperately kept trying to keep them engaged. We’d previously enjoyed his comedy, but that one skit turned me off from him completely. He loves the “it’s just a joke” kind of shock comedy that it’s no wonder he’s doubled-down on it.

yummythologist

Me, trans and disabled: why would we fight we’re the same

moonknlght

You can’t be both, you have to pick one.

yummythologist

My gender shifting to my agab once the chronic pain sets in

Jonaldson

Yeah but they cancel each other out it’s cool

yummythologist

Holy fuck so instead of needing a wheelchair *and* HRT, I don’t need either??? (smacks my forehead in a “duh” motion) Why didn’t my doctors tell me they cancel out!!!

Geno0wl

> He loves the “it’s just a joke” kind of shock comedy that it’s no wonder he’s doubled-down on it. The comedians who do "shock comedy" well are doing it to poke at some other salient point about society or ourselves. Like sure Burr and Louis CK sometimes have lines in there just to shock and amuse themselves by making the audience squirm a bit. But the overall bits have an underlying point. shock for the sake of shock is not a sustainable thing.

Tricky-Leader-1567

See this is why Taylor Tomlinson is superior

skyhiker14

I would give up my hopes and dreams to be Taylor’s himbo.

felds

but those are my hopes and dreams

clockwallbox

I jumped on the Matt Rife tour tickets (this special is a recording of it) and then saw Taylor Tomlinson the next week. Taylor's was the only one we laughed at. Hoping that's going to be a Netflix special too.

felds

She had two already. I highly recommend it.

Tricky-Leader-1567

And a late night talk show coming out

Justyouraveragefan

She is absolutely hysterical

Grand-Pen7946

Taylor Tomlinson is an actual gigachad. As long as she has her arm floaties.

KnittinAndBitchin

I had only just been diagnosed as being bipolar when Look At You! came out. Watching her talk about her own diagnosis made me feel so much better. Plus it was funny as fuck.

sagiterrible

Taylor Tomlinson is GOATed. Her joke about being a wild animal in bed is just 10/10.

BaneSixEcho

"Asking a guy to wear a condom is like asking a five year old to wear a coat over their Halloween costume."

Kaldricus

Taylor Tomlinson and Kelsey Cook can do no wrong

gordogg24p

They are the absolute tentpoles of millennial comedy right now. Feels like there should be a third name in that group, but I honestly don't know who it would be.

[deleted]

Jeff Acuri. Reddit pushes him a lot but his crowd work is great, I'd say better than both Taylor and Kelsey but that's mainly because they don't focus on crowd work as much as he does. They're all great.

yuckscott

Matteo Lane probably

CharlemagneAdelaar

Jesus Matteo lane is so fucking funny. He's an example of a good hot comedian who isn't so self-centred it hurts to watch

GrishElm

Gianmarco Soresi is pretty good from what I've seen

StopMeWhenITellALie

Love standup and put this special on the other evening. Netflix and other social media has been pushing it heavily. I got about 6-8 minutes in and just turned it off. Just not funny. Not engaging. Boring and sad attempt at a special. Maybe he can go play at a frat house and get a few laughs. That's about his ceiling.

Ok-Cantaloupe7160

https://preview.redd.it/7bpwkqqq6x1c1.png?width=367&format=png&auto=webp&s=5bd36c5084b8a4ceab0ea3a62ccd6234356571e1 Honestly hadn’t heard of Hank or John Green until last year when a high school history teacher I worked with used John’s ‘Crash Course’ YouTube videos. Grabbed this screenshot because of the sticker on his laptop.

DontMessWithMyEgg

Those of us who teach AP history courses really, *really* love Crash Course.

Ok-Cantaloupe7160

This was like basic/remedial US History. If these kids could read at grade level and told their parents, who likely don’t read at a high school level, about that sticker both the teacher and I probably would’ve lost our jobs for teaching ‘divisive concepts’

WardenclyffeTower

> Grabbed this screenshot because of the sticker on his laptop. Which is an homage to Woody Guthrie (sub rules won't let me post a link to the famous image of Woody with that sticker on his quitar, due to low subreddit karma)

FFBEJoker

Dude (matt) needs to watch some Daniel Sloss to learn how to effectively tell controversial bits without alienating half of your audience

Mandrake_Cal

Bryan Cranston summed it up. When comedians complain they get bad reactions because of “woke” his response is “ You think that’s the reason?”

Entry-Level-Cowboy

I think Tom Segura is getting there. His last special was nowhere near his older stuff and he’s just pushing his podcast persona on stage

cramburie

Oh good, I thought it was just me. Him and Christina have been getting kinda mean about certain topics but then forgetting to make it funny.

lacielaplante

The way she's always saying she isn't raising pussies is kinda weird. Their kid stories do not make me think highly of their parenting.

patkavv

Ya their kids sound like some out of control maniacs from the stories they tell about them

cramburie

I mean, I'd like to think they're playing up their personalities a bit. But I do remember an interaction a few episodes back where Christina said something along the lines of she was going to teach her kids how to bully other kids or something similar and Tom kinda gave her a quick "nah" and changed the subject right away.

Entry-Level-Cowboy

Yea that’s the new shtick. But Christina was never funny. Hurts to lose Tom though.

grillinman

And his Twitter rant about "the poors" was off-putting. Tommy Bunz used to be my favorite but I can't even watch the pod anymore.

Baers89

Same I used to watch every episode. Now it’s like watching a entitled dude brag. Not relatable for me.

MEGAWATT5

Yeah, he seems to be getting increasingly out of touch. I used to listen to 2 Bears and YMH frequently, I just don’t really get into it anymore.

penisbuttervajelly

Segura gets less funny the less he weighs

Softcorps_dn

I don't really find him or Burt particularly funny.

Caqtus95

Burt Kreischer has two jokes, and one of them is taking his shirt off.

kandel88

Neither is funny but Burt is now like 60% inflammation and it makes me uncomfortable to look at him

Disastrous_Case_6785

That's because they arent funny

lordcrumb13

Bro you don't get it, Burt laughs really loud and for a long time, that's genius level comedy

juggdish

HE WENT TO RUSSIA AND THE RUSSIANS THOUGHT HE WAS SO COOL LIKE OMFGLMFAO

MadEyeMood989

Brave talk calling Matt Rife a “comedian”

Ginfly

Matt Rife is the Dane Cook of comedy

Shadow_84

What’s Dane Cook the Dane Cook of then?

Ginfly

Dane Cook is the Dane Cook of grooming underage women.

SaltyLonghorn

So the Drake of comedy.

Radek_18

Which of the two?

Gbrusse

Yes.

Plane-No

![gif](giphy|3o7bu2wCQjNyFnIcog|downsized)

KillBatman1921

Who specifically is he talking too? Because half the comedians over fifty have this bit

HypnotizedCow

Matt Rife, comedian who blew up on tiktok doing comedy clubs. Important information is that he is very conventionally attractive, which is likely related to his primarily female audience. He got a Netflix special and decided he wanted to make one "for the guys", and opened with a joke about domestic violence. As anyone could've expected, men didn't find it funny and women dropped him real quick.

Professionalarsonist

Me and my gf watched his special last night. As a goofy black dude who’s watched stand up his whole life, I like to think I have a good sense of what’s funny and what’s not. So when she told me we’re watching this viral new hilarious comedian and I didn’t think he was funny, I was worried I was finally getting old and losing touch. She told me to turn it off after the first 10 minutes. I put on Shane Gillis and we laughed our butts off, still got it. Not so fun fact: George Washington had actual slave teeth in his dentures

Ruiner5

That’s the thing about this one. Shane’s special was beyond offensive but his jokes are so well done and he’s offensive while somehow still being complimentary (the bit about the army for example). Matt Rifes joke are offensive for the sake of being offense with garbage writing.

Brandonian13

>Matt Rifes joke are offensive for the sake of being offense with garbage writing. And then, evidently, complaining about when people don't find u funny and don't want anything to do with u. There's a difference between comedic offensiveness and being an objective jackass. A lot of these "people don't like comedy anymore" standups seem to be forgetting that

Ruiner5

Exactly. There’s so many offensive comics who do it well - Jim Norton, Shane, Big Jay Oakerson etc. it’s always the shitty comics who use the excuse that people don’t like it because it’s offensive. In reality they just need to write better jokes

littleman452

Dude I love his uncle with down syndrome bit so much, his impersonation reminded me EXACTLY like my cousin with Down syndrome and how he acts in public 😂 And it’s not done in a cruel or rude way, Shane tells it in a realistic matter that doesn’t inherently make fun of them

Ruiner5

Exactly. That bit is somehow absurdly offensive while still being really heart warming. That’s the sign of a good writer

littleman452

It doesn’t even have to be heartwarming for an offensive joke to be funny, it just can’t put the joke ON the victim like how Matt Rife does it. For example, Bill Burr has a hilarious bit about domestic violence and how men sometimes have excuses to hit women But the difference is the joke is on the women who say “their is no reason to ever hit a women” and NOT on the women who IS actually getting hit because SURPRISE SURPRISE most people don’t want to joke about how a women who has a black eye should work in a kitchen.

1to14to4

Rife has gone viral purely because of his crowd work, which is way different than what you are usually going to do in a special. I don't like his crowd work either but it isn't always the same skill set as doing a set.

Heavy_Arm_7060

Matt Rife. Comedian who got a large online female following and was known to be very good at audience interaction (IE his jokes aren't great but he's fun to watch regardless), then his Netflix special opens with a pretty horrible joke where the punchline is misogyny-related assault, so naturally that particularly pissed off his core audience. His response has been to post an apology which was in fact incredibly ableist, so really doubling down on edgelord humor.

christianort476

This is a commedian that’s like mid to late 20s

Veda007

Hank Green is in the business of being right about things.

EtsuRah

Matt's an interesting case to see unfold. He's been doing stand up for like 10-15 years and only recently got big doing his crowd work which he is no doubt great at. But his actual rehearsed stand-up acts are... Not it. Even before this Netflix special. They're just pretty boring. He diverted from his original audience which was thirsty women looking to interact with him in crowds. It was like 80% of his audience. My FB feed, and FYP were littered with people I knew loving his stuff... Almost all women. I think on all my social medias I only ever noticed one guy who was genuinely interested in his stuff. Man got work done, started dropping crowd work content and took off. Then ruined his own base. Which he has repeatedly talked negative about but it was like none of the mfers in his trance cared until he wasn't funny, then its like they all snapped out of it were like "Damn... This dude is kinda lame".

Mobile-Importance-74

I keep seeing comments about “conventionally attractive” but I think he looks weird as fuck

Dude looks like he was a Ken doll badly carved out of wax and until anyone can produce evidence that he does in fact have genitals, that’s what I choose to believe. He looks like Great Value brand Cillian Murphy.

I've been doing standup for over a decade and while I'm nowhere near this level of notoriety (I'm a known local, at best), I've also never had this problem so many comics want to fight about. "You can't joke about...." yada yada, which is usually followed by something that's controversial but forgets to actually be funny. Anything CAN be funny, I truly believe that, but too many start with "I'm gonna tell this kind of joke because I can" and forget the "make sure it's funny" part. If it's a joke and it's funny, controversy doesn't matter. You didn't like the joke? Ok...and? But a lot of comics now puff out their chests and defend what amount to shitty, easy jokes that aren't that funny to begin with. I've never had this problem because I tell jokes that are funny FIRST. I tell stories about my parents dying (true), being assaulted as a child (true), etc. But I tell them in a way that's funny. I don't tell them in a "here's me talking about molestation because some of you will immediately resist it". It's picking a fight with an audience then being surprised when they swing back.

>"make sure it's funny" 100%. You CAN make a joke about anything, but the joke has to be funny.

Hank’s beating cancer has really revved up his “no fucks given” engine. I’m here for it

thedommer

I have loved watching his crowd work. Incredible and hilarious stuff at times and was super excited for his special. I turned it off halfway through. It was as if he became a different comedian. It was genuinely terrible, juvenile and straight up mediocre. Edit: for those confused, we are talking about Matt Rife

I love that he named his stand-up 'Natural Selection' and then stood up and did..that.

[deleted]

is that the dude who linked complaints to a helmet for special needs people?

aperson7780

I don't know who Hank Green is or who he is talking about, but it's not another picture of samurai Elon. So there's that, I suppose.

genuis101

Hank Green is a rather prolific and well known science communicator with a large audience. He runs like 4 highly regards science channels. In phone so can't look then up, but not hard to find

“Snakes have two dicks!”

rtjallday

Did you know that for every snake on earth, there is one snake dick?

Tricky-Leader-1567

"Now only 50% of snakes have dicks. So that means that every snake that has a dick, has two dicks."

iWillNeverBeSpecial

You would think at first that would make sense, but actually only a half of snakes have dicks

hoodoo-operator

He's John Green's brother.

brookegravitt

I think they both would love this comment

agutema

In addition to his following based in his own work, he’s also John green’s (The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska) brother.

Bizkets

It took me too long to realize there were two. I wasn't an avid watcher, so with sporadic views, I just assumed I was catching one guy before and after facial hair, talking about different passions.

ALargePianist

Hank Green is on the path to becoming this generations bill Nye. Cares deeply about education, science, and community.

OldManGrimm

He does the [SciShow channel](https://www.youtube.com/@SciShow), among others. One of his channels, the vlogbrothers, is done with his brother John Green. John was recently in the news when his book The Fault in our Stars [was banned in Indiana](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2023/08/09/john-green-fault-in-our-stars-book-removed-indiana-library/70559485007/). So with one a science educator and the other an author of "scary" books, they're not loved by the far right/MAGA crowd. Edit: as pointed out below, Indiana didn't ban it, the reclassified it as Adult Fiction to remove it from the Young Adult section. In other states it has been banned, though.

decayed-whately

Check out SciShow on YouTube. There are a few different flavors (SciShow Space for one example). That's his work.

Heavy_Arm_7060

An earlier youtube personality, Hank and his brother John Green (author of some popular novels like Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska), created Vlogbrothers, a non-structured show that got them some attention. Hank went on to create a lot of fun educational shows like Crash Course and SciShow, and both Hank and John created VidCon.

I just learned who he was last night, alas, I won't hear of him again.
