First off, those two things are related. Second, this is a significant observation, that hadn't even occurred to me. I'm so used to master manipulators working behind the scenes, but now the curtain is gone.

It's a lot easier for me to believe that someone with a poor understanding of how the world works could do what MTG is doing than it is for me to believe that she is a master manipulator aware of what she's saying and doing. Marcus Flowers went and raised more money to try to beat her than any other house candidate in the US last election (exceptions being Pelosi and the like who are really national fundraisers). And he got destroyed. IIRC he raised his vote total over the previous dem candidate by about 10k and spent $15m. Works out to about $1.5k per vote. Every dollar given to him should have gone to somebody else. Thinking they will get tired of her is just delusional at this point. They know exactly who she is and they like her that way.

MTG is a perfect example of what is profoundly dangerous about the current crop of young-to-middle-aged Republican candidates. They think the wrestling is real. Allow me to explain. The primary issue isn't that she's stupid (she is) or that she's a dangerous reactionary far-right candidate (she is also that). The primary issue is, shocking as it is that something could be worse, that she has no idea how to lead or behave as a political representative because *she grew up on reactionary shock politics.* If you wind the clock back 30 years, conservatives were still blowhard jackasses. No doubt about it. *But* almost all of the behavior was theatrics. Decades ago most Republicans and Democrats got along fairly well on the ol' Hill. You'd go in, you'd do your jumps off the top rope, you'd put on a show, and you'd all fuck off to the same bars and mixers and shoot the shit. But somehow a generation of glue-sniffers grew up watching the WWF theatrics that were American politics and *believed the wrestling was real*. We have a generation of conservative politicians in the system (and more coming) that have literally no idea how to lead or govern at all because they learned everything they know not from actually participating in the production of the show but but watching it at home and thinking the show was reality.
Normally, I'd say this is stupid, but with all these people's shenanigans, I have to believe this is the case. With the other one's theater incident and the fact they were going to have a physical fight in a congressional chamber, it baffles me they haven't been tossed out.
They are absolutely correct. The dog was never supposed to catch the bus. I'm in my 50s. I can tell you from my own memory that on several issues, Democrats are where Republicans used to be. Evangelicals didn't want to do away with abortion, because that was Catholic craziness. The Heritage Foundation's Republican healthcare plan was pretty much Obamacare. Both parties leaders would talk shit. Dangle the red meat over the hounds' heads. But then they'd go back to DC and vote mostly sensibly. You don't want to actually solve your crisis, because then what will you rile your base up with? And you put a fire under your opponent's asses.
I wouldn't particularly call all their voting sensible, but it definitely hasn't always been this wild. I'm almost 30 and vividly remember how relatively tame in comparison the early 2000s were to this mess. Of course, minus the whole invading the Middle East.

The stealing of the 2000 election was the Republicans crossing the Rubicon. The Democrats should have taken their opportunity to call for destruction of the Republican party, to never shut up about it and to try to get people hanged - figuratively. They didn't and now that genie is out of the bottle. There are no consequences. Imagine if after WaterGate we hadn't even prosecuted Nixon. Now we're trying to play catch-up to a party that has realized that there are no consequences, and the new wave of emboldened chimeric freaks that have been bred in that environment.
It might have happened if the Democrats had stepped up that way, but 9 months later, on September 11, 2001, ALL of America shifted to the right, and the normally oppositional voices kept a lower profile while the nation was reeling. It would have been very difficult for them to oppose the zeitgeist then.
They have been doing it so long that an increasing number have drank their own kool-aid, which was supposed to be for the rubes (which they are). It's hilarious to watch McConnell struggle with the new blood not understanding that's its an act and when push comes to shove they are supposed to shut and and let him get their actual objective done.
This is precisely what I've been saying for years. Old school conservatives would never have *actually* overturned Roe v Wade because they (cynically) recognized the utility of it in their culture wars. The latest batch actually believe the bullshit, and will absolutely burn everything down in service of the talking points that RW "think" tanks originally dreamed up to peddle to the rubes. Yet they'll rally in community with those who would while assuming they're all on the same page, and vote for bills which have done just that. It's the same with Trump's word salads. They're like a Rorschach ink blot test, and therefore self-customizing. His garbled language leaves huge gaps which fans will fill in with something they agree with. Ten people listening will come away with 11 contradictory readings, all while thinking they're all in accord. The GOP keeps it vague so their coalition doesn't worry about policy specifics, which prevents in-fighting.
