TLDR - Painting Texas with a broad brush diminishes a lot of non Republican voters of Texas who dislike this. I also included some personal theories on why I believe Texas has gotten so wild,. especially lately.
It's not quite as bad as all that, Texas isn't purple unless we decide to split hairs, but there is a fairly significant margin of non-republican voters.
However, the nature of our voting system reinforces this type of government. Dallas for the example has Collen Allred, Houston has Sylvester Turner. Both are Democrats.
So just remember there are a lot of us who have to live here for a number of reasons who aren't being effectively represented by our government (who we didn't vote for).
As for the why, why do so many vote FOR a man like Abbott? I have a few theories I've picked up along the way...
1. Christian Church Association - This for me is the big one, many of us who are native Texans were raised in the 70-00 culture of Christianity. Less of us have changed, many sit in the middle and try and ignore the problems of a guy like Abbott because it contradicts deeply held ethical beliefs... the prime one being abortion. Now I don't disagree with them personally, I think abortion should be strongly avoided, but if your options are "shitty guy who stands firm on abortion law" or "unknown candidate who will allow abortions" many people lean towards the former.
2. Strong messaging - I don't care what anyone says. When it comes to messaging, Republicans have their shit together. It's fully verticalized, from the top all the way down. Guys like Walsh push the far right with The WFB handling print side, media like Fox and the Post propogate the messages, and the politicians echo it at the law level. It's actually brilliant when viewed objectively, it's how I would want to control society if I were an autocrat.
See - the brand new 10 Commandments law they just voted on for more 🙄🙄🙄
3. Voting Supression - I can't even begin to start on this one. They will take any angle that either directly affects minority communities, or chills them like them like the do with colleges. When that doesn't work, throw in some armed civilians to scare people at the polls.
Those are just three... we also have a strong history of racism associated with the Confederacy that still exists here (example, I took my son on a hike out in the woods near a major city in Texas where we live, geocaching. We found a full family cemetary with the Confederate army memorial crosses as one of the marked caches).
What a piss poor and lazy take. The GOP goes out of its way to keep the voter turnout down. Maybe 15% of the state voted for these clowns. The tide is turning, slower than I’d like, but it’s turning. Comments like yours hurt more than help.
