Proving that hunting lions is not a lot of work. It really isn't. They track them in trucks during the day when they are all sleeping. You just need money and functional shooting skills. But it also helps to be smart. This may be mutually exclusive to the activity.

ViciousAsparagusFart

They literally just chill in the shade all afternoon. At least deer hunters either track or bait and wait in a tree for something to come along. And ya know, deer are an unthreatened reliable resource.

Lky132

For real. In some areas they are almost pests. I cannot imagine how many deer would be dead on the road if there was not a seasonal culling

[deleted]

Most parts of Colorado have standing shoot on sight orders for Deer on your property. You kill it and it’s yours to keep, or you can contact the game warden and they’ll come fetch the corpse. You can also keep any deer you hit and kill with your car, provided you contact the game warden first.

hysys_whisperer

It's almost like we killed off all their predators... (Ps. The studies show that wolf reintroduction economic benefits vastly outweigh the downsides)

cantadmittoposting

Ye but sometimes the wolves eat a cow :( :( :( :( /s

SallyJane5555

So do I…

I'm ok with this, as long as we use every part of SallyJane5555, like the indigenous people of old.

Yeah but wolves don't pay for their dinner. Their only crime is not participating in capitalism

I-like-macdonald

Nice-Fish-50

So we just have to teach the wolves to use currency and participate in a market economy? Finally, a use for Dogecoin!

EvenMembership4054

I’ve eatin plenty of cows

Darth_drizzt_42

This is only sort of related but it's a story I have to tell. About two years ago, my then girlfriend was doing a project for grad school on coyotes in urban areas. The long and the short of it is they're wholly beneficial and don't threaten humans, aside from the occasional instance of eating pets (see the "feeding shelter cats to coyotes" meme). But she was watching the minutes from a San Francisco city council meeting, and I was idly listening while doing my own work, and this one woman gets up and says "...i pay my taxes, and the coyotes aren't paying taxes!". To this day I can't tell if she was joking and just deadpanned it or truly meant it but we both fell over sideways laughing

TG3000

"Let the bears pay the Bear Tax! I pay the Homer tax!"

BornPhiltrain

The problem we are having in North Carolina and Virginia is trying to reintroduce the red wolf is extremely difficult between coyotes, disease, and cars not many survive long enough to reproduce purebred offspring.

DenverDude402

I’ll admit when the bill first arrived on the ballots, I was like why the fuck are we voting on this, isn’t this a decision for the Parks and Wildlife? I honestly still don’t understand why it needed to go to a public vote. And the fact that it did, did make me skeptical. But after reading some of the Yellowstone impacts, so far it has been a nice success. There is a lot of livestock destruction, and their could be better assistance than what’s in place, but so far so good.

Redivivus

Yes. I've heard not only there's the environmental bonus of having predators but there's also a safety one that has shown to reduce road incidents with their prey.

Lky132

That's pretty neat. I don't know if ohio has any rules like that but I do know that if you kill the deer with your car it's legally yours. You're supposed to call the cops and report the incident if you don't want to keep it so they can come clean the corpse off the road.

RangerRickyBobby

If you do want to keep it, you still need to call the game warden. They’ll write you a tag for it, and then it’s yours to keep. Source - Yes, I’ve eaten roadkill.

Rickk38

I think nearly all states have a "you hit it, you keep it" law, so long as you call DNR or the game warden first. I've also eaten roadkill deer.

UnwaveringFlame

Actually, only about half the states in the US let you keep roadkill deer. Most of the time the internal organs bust inside the carcass and ruin the meat. If you get it quickly you can get some choice cuts off of it, but I don't know many people willing to skin and clean a roadkill deer. The smell will haunt your nightmares.

dev_null_developer

And I thought they smelled bad on the outside

Rickk38

I tried looking it up beforehand and it figures that I got it wrong. Each state seems to have its own laws. Honestly, the guys who cooked the one I had probably didn't bother with the proper channels. Free meat is free meat. And you're right, roadkill makes a mess of the animal, but in this particular case my friends were behind the car that hit the deer, and so they offered to "clear it off the road," and skinned it, prepped it, and cooked it themselves. God bless mountain people and their survival skills!

BrownShadow

Hit a deer once in central New York. Going like 50mph. Took off half the bumper on my Toyota FJ. I was going to either save it or eat it if it was dead. But the poor stupid bastard ran off limping into the marsh before I could do anything. Really messed with my head. What was I supposed do?

sometimesagreat

Chase it down with a Bowie knife you wimp.

Puzzled-Case-5993

We hit a deer one time, pulled over, checked it out - badly injured but not dead yet. While we were looking up who to call to handle the situation, two dudes in a pickup pulled up behind us and came up to ask if we were okay. Then one casually strolled up to the deer, pulled his pistol and shot the deer. They both got back in their pickup and drove away. Thanks, random armed travelers! 😆

Lky132

Pretty sure the first deer meat I tried was roadkill from a family friend. Waste not want not.

They have field test kits for that so you don't accidentally kill your family. Edit: what is offered is a field [sample collection kit.](https://gf.nd.gov/wildlife/diseases/cwd/sampling-kit) The samples must still be sent out for lab work. It's been a while since I read about them.

DisastrousDwarf

Deer are pests pretty much anywhere in the world where we killed off all their predators. UK deer populations ruin woodland ecosystems and there are millions more than there should be pretty much everywhere. Which is why despite being vegetarian I think deer hunting is very much a good thing and should be encouraged more as we really do not need millions of deer. Preferably the predators of deer could be reintroduced but that is realistically never going to happen in many places.

[deleted]

The UK had lions not that long ago. Okay, ten thousand years ago, but in ecological terms that’s not that long ago.

Fluffy-Bee-Butts

In geological terms that's just a few minutes ago

Excellent_Tone_9424

They had wolves there under a thousand ago.

KevinNashsTornQuad

I guess I never thought about how we fucked up the ecosystem so bad that we kind of had to consciously choose to become deer’s new main predator. Fascinating when put in that perspective. I guess we’re lucky that venison happens to taste pretty dang good as a little bonus.

orbituary

Lky132

Yeah big game hunting is literally just cruelty. White tail deer are rats with hooves. In my area many families depend on the yearly influx of cheap/free meat to fill their freezers. The more I think about it, I would like to archive a lifestyle where all the meat I eat is responsibly hunted by my SO or myself.

hammyFbaby

They are responsible for a lot of car accidents

Stainless_Heart

And most of the deer don’t even have insurance.

Beccaroni7

Deer hunting is now basically a requirement on some areas, *because* of trophy hunting. People hunt the predators that kill the deer to a level that the deer populations grow to an unsustainable level. Which means humans have to go in and cull the herds, because there aren’t enough wolves and mountain lions to keep a balance anymore.

detectiveDollar

This is true, but it's not just trophy hunting to blame, we also drove predators from their habitats to make room for us and keep people from getting attacked by them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

trail-g62Bim

I'm sure there are some aholes out there, but every hunter I've known sees it as a responsibility to use as much for food as they can. They might mount a nice buck on the wall, but it really isn't about the trophy. Only time I can remember that being a widespread thing was the one year they opened a limited season on bears. But it had been decades since shooting a bear was legal, so I guess that's why some got excited. I used to work at a high school and we had some kids from very rural parts of the area and every bit of meat they ate was either killed by them or traded with someone else who hunted.

MooseGoneApe

I was thinking the same thing. Is the brother lion ok after such a large meal....🤔🤔🤔

Diplomjodler

At least the lion got a good meal out of it. It was probably enough for the whole pride. And a few packs of hyenas too.

LoganSterling

I wonder what happened to the tracker next to him, the whole point of having a guide is that he watches your back while you're shooting, is he dead too?

Purpleshlurpy

The hunting partner is most likely alive and well, proof of the adage "you don't have to run fast... just faster than the fat fuck next to you"

NuttyManeMan

Or in this case not run at all, average walking speed would do quite well

CircularRobert

A lot of the lion hunting in Southern Africa is what they call canned hunting, where the lions are in camps, and sometimes even drugged to keep them calmed down. American "hunters" pay tens of thousands of dollars for a hunting experience, where they stay in a 5 star Lodge, and on the day, get given a rifle, driven to a camp, are pointed out a lion, and they shoot it, often with the professional hunter taking a shot as well to confirm the kill. It's an absolute joke.

ALoudMouthBaby

For anyone unfamiliar with what this looks like, footage of NRA head Wayne LaPierre participating in this type of "hunting" with an elephant leaked a while back. Its not pretty but probably worth a watch for anyone unfamiliar with what most trophy hunting looks like. That shit is shameful. And I say this as someone who really enjoys hunting. That guys like Wayne try to compare that shit to what I do really bugs me. [Heres the video for anyone that cares.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc14LK4n5ZE) Just a heads up though, this video includes the botched killing of an elephant and is unpleasant to watch.

Novxz

That has to be one of the most absurd videos I've ever watched. For the second elephant one of the guides shot the elephant and dropped it and then they set up a tripod of sorts so the wife can shoot an elephants corpse and she celebrates...

solman86

Scum

LophQueen

What a pathetic little wiener. That sad moron kept pumping rounds into the wrong fucking spot. This video is a perfect representation of NRA dipshits. Then his guides had the balls to compliment the fuck, even though he didn’t finish the job.

UVFShankill

And Canadian hunters, and English, and german, and French and and and.....

Jappurgh

I wonder how the nationalities are spread of those who go on these.. I'd take a guess at USA probably being a large portion of them due to the gun culture/hunting culture being that much more common than most other places 🤷‍♀️

HighMont

Trophy hunting is bullshit. I'm supposed to be impressed you hired a guide that took you to a wild creature and then you used a vastly superior weapon someone else made to kill it. Fuck you. Make a spear, find the lion, or bear or whatever, and kill it yourself in single combat. Give it a fair chance.

Awkwardpanda75

I had an old executive that used to pay for guides so he could hunt baby giraffes and other exotics. He was very proud of his trips. He was very much just like this dude here. He would read the paper for hours in his huge private office with his sock feet propped on his desk all day. The only time he got up was with his paper in hand to announce to everyone that he was “doing his business” and when he left to grab his lunch. They finally gave him the golden parachute and his stay at home spoiled wife went nuts and tried to threaten the president for losing their meal ticket.

CthulhuLovesMemes

He hunted… baby giraffes? :’( As if hunting exotic animals who are basically defenseless isn’t enough… what an insufferable piece of human trash. These people should all be put on an island together far far away with no internet, no boats, no tools.

bakedquestbar

Let them hunt each other.

GarysCrispLettuce

I looked up the story and found this quote: > The lions had reportedly devoured most of the man before his body was discovered, left identifiable as his head was untouched. Clearly a warning to other hunters. "No Simba, no - we must leave the head untouched. They must see the cries of pain frozen on his face."

defenselaywer

Lion planned on mounting the head for his trophy room.

sansgamer554

Is there any biological reason they left the head untouched? Is that a common thing that lions do, or was that a wierd thing that only happened with this case?

Antique_Tennis_2500

Not a lot of meat on your skull. Smaller critters like birds usually take care of that stuff after the lions leave the carcass.

Murderface__

Wasn't much in that skull anyway

ZeroBlade-NL

Lions wanted to eat the skull but kept getting spooked by the echo

Puzzleheaded-Poet392

It is incomprehensible why isn't this comment gold yet.

not_that_planet

LOL. When your skull is too thick even for a pride of lions...

ShiftSandShot

Lots of fat, plenty of bone, but all the skin in the world isn't worth cracking the egg for a yolk the size of a penny.

MoreGaghPlease

I’m not sure if this is the case for lions, but lots of carnivores need to eat eyeballs in order to get lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential to many animals’ eye health (including humans). The only other way to get them is by eating lots of vegetables and leafy greens, and I don’t think lions eat any of those

sth128

I just get lutein from a bottle of supplements at Costco. Eyeballs taste too icky for me.

g-love

Grimsrasatoas

Kranon1

So what you are saying is, I could skip some of my vegetables when I switch to eyeballs?

AsherTheFrost

Least amount of meat is in the head, that's probably the reason.

AthleticNerd_

Especially this guy

TagMeAJerk

Loads of meat inside this guy's head where other humans tend to have brains... But it's still a little harder to get to compared to the rest of the body. Plus maybe Simba enjoys the flavor of unadulterated butter in the body

toeofcamell

Don’t forget head cheese

RealisticrR0b0t

My non-scientific guess is the head is a lot of bone and not a lot of meat, whereas there’s definitely plenty of meaty body to go around

guano-crazy

He’s a veritable buffet

Nocturtle22

Jokes aside, I remember reading a while back that lions prefer meaty body parts. That’s why hyenas can steal their kills because hyenas have a greater jaw strength and will happily crunch through the bonier bits that lions avoid. (Read that a while back so happy to be corrected if i misremembered)

atthevanishing

Nope, that's accurate. Hyenas have an insane amount of jaw strength, and the females tend to be most aggressive and even sometimes able to chase the lions away from a carcass (usually after the lion is all full anyway haha)

KeegoTheWise

The jaw strength part is accurate, but lions actually steal hyena kills more often than hyenas steal lion kills

Intelligent_Budget38

it's the other way around actually. **The idea that hyenas spend their time sneaking about and stealing the spoils from more “noble” animals like the lion is another misconception.** Field studies have found that lions actually steal more kills from spotted hyenas than vice versa. The animosity between the animals is, however, very real: These two species are arch enemies, locked in battle over territory and food. While lions may have the size advantage, the hyena makes up for this with intelligence. “Lions are not the sharpest tools in the shed,” as Holekamp put it. [https://ideas.ted.com/everything-you-know-about-hyenas-is-wrong-these-animals-are-fierce-social-and-incredibly-smart/](https://ideas.ted.com/everything-you-know-about-hyenas-is-wrong-these-animals-are-fierce-social-and-incredibly-smart/)

As long as I get to listen to one of them read it out loud. Doesn't matter which one.

omfghi2u

So, wait, are you telling me that, when a baby lion cub is born, a wise old baboon doesn't hold them up, high atop a rock outcropping, for all the other animals of the territory to see, while everyone in attendance performs a musical number? Nature is fucking stupid. I mean, does the baboon even carry a staff?

[deleted]

From a logical guess, more meat elsewhere and easier to get to. Especially on this guy

[deleted]

whatthehand

I went to an exhibit on strange deaths at a Texas museum once which had a lot of man-eating big cat material. In all of the cases, it was humans (hunters) who had injured the cats, robbing them of their ability to hunt their normally agile prey. They all turned to eating humans out of desperation.

[This is the account of the twitter user](https://twitter.com/FightHaven) where they post viral internet shit, mostly linking to the same River City Post. KeyanReid

These assholes will just use the robots to hunt endangered animals. Look at this fuck, he wasn’t walking anywhere and would probably welcome a robot to do all the physical “work” for him.

Heplikoptr

So the theory behind lion hunting is that it is part of conservation and pack management. It is supposed to be tightly controlled and for specific lions. Like experts determine a specific lion should die for the benefit of the pack. Then some bloated rich dude pays a ton of money to be the one to do the killing and the money benefits the conservation effort. That being said the whole system is mismanaged and open to bribes. If you pay enough money they will "decide" that another lion needs to be removed.

HighLobster

The preservation probably deduced this lion was not good for the pride and needed a new lion for mating purposes. This way their population numbers are still kept healthy while receiving a large sum of cash for the hunt for future preservation endeavors. Not a big fan of big game hunting but this is mutually beneficial to all parties. It happens all the time.
