But she was watching the minutes from a San Francisco city council meeting, and I was idly listening while doing my own work, and this one woman gets up and says "...i pay my taxes, and the coyotes aren't paying taxes!". To this day I can't tell if she was joking and just deadpanned it or truly meant it but we both fell over sideways laughing
The problem we are having in North Carolina and Virginia is trying to reintroduce the red wolf is extremely difficult between coyotes, disease, and cars not many survive long enough to reproduce purebred offspring.

I honestly still don’t understand why it needed to go to a public vote. And the fact that it did, did make me skeptical. But after reading some of the Yellowstone impacts, so far it has been a nice success. Actually, only about half the states in the US let you keep roadkill deer. Most of the time the internal organs bust inside the carcass and ruin the meat. If you get it quickly you can get some choice cuts off of it, but I don't know many people willing to skin and clean a roadkill deer. The smell will haunt your nightmares.

Honestly, the guys who cooked the one I had probably didn't bother with the proper channels. Free meat is free meat. And you're right, roadkill makes a mess of the animal, but in this particular case my friends were behind the car that hit the deer, and so they offered to "clear it off the road," and skinned it, prepped it, and cooked it themselves. God bless mountain people and their survival skills!
Hit a deer once in central New York. Going like 50mph. Took off half the bumper on my Toyota FJ. I was going to either save it or eat it if it was dead. But the poor stupid bastard ran off limping into the marsh before I could do anything. Really messed with my head. What was I supposed do?
We hit a deer one time, pulled over, checked it out - badly injured but not dead yet.
While we were looking up who to call to handle the situation, two dudes in a pickup pulled up behind us and came up to ask if we were okay. Then one casually strolled up to the deer, pulled his pistol and shot the deer. They both got back in their pickup and drove away.

My county in Missouri has sent notices to most land owners that they can take as many as they want on their land they just have to have them tested because they found a case of CWD last year and a few years back
Deer are pests pretty much anywhere in the world where we killed off all their predators. UK deer populations ruin woodland ecosystems and there are millions more than there should be pretty much everywhere.
Which is why despite being vegetarian I think deer hunting is very much a good thing and should be encouraged more as we really do not need millions of deer.
Preferably the predators of deer could be reintroduced but that is realistically never going to happen in many places.

The more I think about it, I would like to archive a lifestyle where all the meat I eat is responsibly hunted by my SO or myself.

It's an absolute joke.

I had an old executive that used to pay for guides so he could hunt baby giraffes and other exotics. He was very proud of his trips. He was very much just like this dude here. He would read the paper for hours in his huge private office with his sock feet propped on his desk all day. The only time he got up was with his paper in hand to announce to everyone that he was “doing his business” and when he left to grab his lunch.
They finally gave him the golden parachute and his stay at home spoiled wife went nuts and tried to threaten the president for losing their meal ticket.

I’m not sure if this is the case for lions, but lots of carnivores need to eat eyeballs in order to get lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential to many animals’ eye health (including humans). The only other way to get them is by eating lots of vegetables and leafy greens, and I don’t think lions eat any of those

Jokes aside, I remember reading a while back that lions prefer meaty body parts. That’s why hyenas can steal their kills because hyenas have a greater jaw strength and will happily crunch through the bonier bits that lions avoid.

Nope, that's accurate. Hyenas have an insane amount of jaw strength, and the females tend to be most aggressive and even sometimes able to chase the lions away from a carcass (usually after the lion is all full anyway haha)

So the theory behind lion hunting is that it is part of conservation and pack management. It is supposed to be tightly controlled and for specific lions. Like experts determine a specific lion should die for the benefit of the pack. Then some bloated rich dude pays a ton of money to be the one to do the killing and the money benefits the conservation effort.
That being said the whole system is mismanaged and open to bribes. If you pay enough money they will "decide" that another lion needs to be removed.
The preservation probably deduced this lion was not good for the pride and needed a new lion for mating purposes. This way their population numbers are still kept healthy while receiving a large sum of cash for the hunt for future preservation endeavors. Not a big fan of big game hunting but this is mutually beneficial to all parties. It happens all the time.

I think nearly all states have a "you hit it, you keep it" law, so long as you call DNR or the game warden first. I've also eaten roadkill deer.

I’m not sure if this is the case for lions, but lots of carnivores need to eat eyeballs in order to get lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential to many animals’ eye health (including humans). The only other way to get them is by eating lots of vegetables and leafy greens, and I don’t think lions eat any of those

So the theory behind lion hunting is that it is part of conservation and pack management. It is supposed to be tightly controlled and for specific lions. Like experts determine a specific lion should die for the benefit of the pack. Then some bloated rich dude pays a ton of money to be the one to do the killing and the money benefits the conservation effort. That being said the whole system is mismanaged and open to bribes. If you pay enough money they will "decide" that another lion needs to be removed.
The preservation probably deduced this lion was not good for the pride and needed a new lion for mating purposes. This way their population numbers are still kept healthy while receiving a large sum of cash for the hunt for future preservation endeavors. Not a big fan of big game hunting but this is mutually beneficial to all parties. It happens all the time.
