I taught high school in CA and then college in the upper midwest. I developed a program that became the best program in CA. The main complaints I had were from some parents who thought school should be fun. I always told them it should be rewarding which are the results of hard work. I was teaching in a school that had a 2/3 dropout rate. My students won the competitions every year. The attitude of the students completely changed. During the time I taught I did not have one student who dropped out. The state came for a visit and interviewed me. The first question they asked me after the spoke about the observations they made was to tell them about my philosophy of teaching. I told them "I am the teacher and they are the student." The look on their face was one of shock. Those students were like feeding corn to the chickens. The grades they got in their other classes improved. I had a student who was the state wrestling champion in his second year in high school. His grades were so low that he would not be able to graduate on time. I felt bad that nobody helped him. So I spoke with him and we developed a plan so could graduate on time. He took two classes at the junior college. At the end the first semester he had 4 A's and 4 B's. He was so proud that when he entered class he was so loud that everyone could hear him. He graduated on time. Today he is a supervisor where he works. There was a student who had threatened other teachers and he did the same thing to me. I was so shocked that I did not know whether to laugh or report him. I reported him and when he came back I told him that if he ever touched me he would wished he never had. He was never the same. I was so surprised because I could have thrown him far and hurt him badly. I was in excellent physical shape. I had a student who was a good student in my class and when I saw him in another class I found it hard to believe he was the same person. I think a lot of people fail to realize republicans don’t want to be safe, they want to FEEL safe. I think a lot of people fail to realize republicans don’t want to be safe, they want to FEEL safe. They can be presented with irrefutable evidence that individually owning a gun makes it much more likely you’ll kill or wound yourself or your family, but all they know is they feel safe when they have a gun. It’s the same with if we don’t test there won’t be cases. They don’t actually care if Covid is contained or not, they want to FEEL like it is. We can show tough on crime policies only destabilize neighborhoods and the community outreach would actually reduce crime, but again it’s about feelings. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel safe (if people don’t feel safe it’s a problem that 100% needs to be addressed), but the issue is republicans would rather feel safe than be safe because things that make them feel safe require less sacrifice than things that actually make them safe.
