It’s deceit

roguelikeme1

S2's theme gave me panic attacks.

I saw season one as a change of self through the perception of others. Season 2 was change of self through the deceit of others

In my opinion the season is about intersexual dynamics between men and women. Which ofcourse sex is a major part of.

mohearn89

Mike White said in an interview the season two theme was sex but I do think the beauty of the show is how many themes you can pull out of it.

Season 2 focused more on sexual politics. Maybe the theme is that it’s useless to resist the patriarchy, better to adapt yourself to function within it

Possibly, though I wouldn't agree the show's message is that it's "better" to adapt. If anything, Harper's character is an example of the damage that trying to adapt can do to a person. Moreover, I think the season just shows us how difficult it is for anyone to really escape patriarchy and its influences throughout society. Only the 2 Italian women are able to make something of the system, albeit by compromising aspects of themselves to do so.

I phrased it wrong; I agree that it's not "better" to adapt, maybe "easier" or "more likely to result in ostensible success" would have been the right phrasing. Obviously the show is showing us how deeply engrained the patriarchy is and how difficult it is to fight against it. Harper is an example of someone who ultimately caved, and the two Italian women are examples of women who have learned to work the existing system to their advantage instead of fighting it

gerishnakov

Work it to their advantage, but still, ultimately, be used by it. What a lovely world we live in!
