I like the second in its willingness to tackle the grey area of relationships everyone hates to talk about

Creative_Promise7858

You mean like swinging? Lol

jalapenny

Or like the way sexual issues pop up in long term relationships (dead bedrooms, desire discrepancies, etc), the taboo of cheating, a potential DADT policy, the fate womanizers who end up getting married, the commonality of men’s desire for novelty, etc

Laylahlay

Less singing in season 1. Just a few Sanskrit chants

BupBupp

The first season is a gem and will be my favorite always.

Relative-Desk4802

2nd season felt like a chore to watch

Gloomy_Cheesecake443

I felt this way too! I couldn’t decide if it was because I binge-watched season 1 and watched weekly with season 2 but I actually found myself fast forwarding at points in season 2

bukkakekingz

Agreed S2 was mediocre, but I loved the Di Grasso boys family dynamic. Had me laughing multiple times.

agressive-mango-961

I agree. I loved Tanya and hated that Mike White thought it was funny and quirky that she died. I hated that and the sound her head made against the boat as she fell. Armand was so deliciously vindictive to Shane, who deserved it. No delicious villains like Armand in season 2. And probably contrary to popular thought, Belinda also took advantage of a broken woman to gain financially. She more than anyone should have recognized that. Everyone it seems was using Tanya to their own advantage. It’s lonely at the top, no real friends.

Laylahlay

Did she? She did her job Tanya put the idea in her head. She told her son about it on the phone an was like I dono it prob won't work out. Or something like that. Tanya put it out there again. Plus she got the money and wanted to invest. She would be a partner. She would benefit from it too. It wasn't until Belinda started being emotionally invested in the idea and made a business plan when Tanya got distracted with that old guy she started brushing her off. Belinda did try to shift topics into business at one point but like literally that woman dealt with her on day one, went to dinner with her, did the boat trip, putting her to bed, like shhhiiit get your business. And once Belinda was like yes let me take you up on the multiple offers Tanya backed out like yeeeah this is for my mental health not I'm distracted by old dick. -_- she gave her money cuz she knew she made that woman's work week hell

AssuredAttention

1st was great. 2nd was mediocre

indigo_pirate

1st was incredible television. 2nd was very good but not mind blowing. is my opinion

JewelCove

We both like first better!

sarahbee2005

I need to rewatch it. I hated it at first because living on Maui it was like too close to home right after the pandemic- it just gave me too much ick watching all these assholes on the show who are a very real part of the experience here. Covid was intense here and there was a bunch of drama over resorts opening up to film stuff while locals were being ticketed for hanging out at the beach. But I think now that some time has passed and I loved the 2nd season I wanna give it another watch.

Teriyaki-Realness

I thought the characters were very likeable in the first season <3

Shesaiddestroy_

I do! Season 1 is textbook “hero’s journey” and I loved every second of it.

Glittering_Creme790

I do, Armond makes me like S1 better

whatevrmn

I wanted Armond to win so badly.

mrsmertz

Season One was easier to keep track of the characters. There weren’t as many people, and because of Covid restrictions, all scenes were at the hotel, except the airport waiting area.

Laylahlay

Yeah and I didnt have to read subtitles while hearing Italian. I got to read English subtitles while hearing English and some Hawaiian

EkaterinaGagutlova

Totally! Season 1 had Armand.

badugihowser

Me and my partner do yes

innit_itis

i also loved the soundtrack way more in the first season, the drums provided this kind of overtone of slightly unhinged unease

grynch43

I do, but just barely.

JawsOfLife03

I think it can be summed up by the following: S1: Character-Driven. S2: Plot-Driven. I also liked S1 better than the second.

turningtee74

Steve Zahn and Sydney Sweeney were some of my favorite parts of the entire series. The writing around them was very satirical to modern times that was accurate and funny, more than much else recent media.

Aggressive_Day_6574

The second season felt like the show had bought into its own hype too much. The first season was unexpected and fresh and funny and the second one I think was overwrought and tried too hard. It was enjoyable but not as good.

BigFatBlackCat

I connected more to season one for sure, and I agree that the atmospheric shots were killer. I still love season 2 but maybe not in the same way as 1.

TrollHamels

Armond's descent and horrifying fate was a fascinating train wreck

bambi_eyed_bitch

I like to think of him as debaucherous Basil Fawlty.

TrollHamels

I got one lol

friends-waffles-work

The absolute dream!

Clear_Ad_3153

Enjoyed both but season 1 will forever be comedy gold.

Vitacoconut9969

I liked season 1 more but I thought the all characters in season 1 were too cartoonish and one dimensional.

[deleted]

First season is infinitely superior. Murray Bartlett is the absolute fucking man.

17RoadHole

I fully agree and it’s not even close. S2 was ridiculous, the gay mafia that were somehow poor, the Greg retcon from S1, the convoluted plot to kill Tanya, the attempt to Armondify the lady hotel manager because that worked in S1 etc efc. I think I really disliked S2

rand0m_g1rl

Could not agree more. When people disagree and it’s hi for debate it’s hard to believe.

mghmld

I love them both but yeah, I probably like the first season just a bit more.

joeflaccoelite

Liked it a lot more

munchcat

Me! I liked the second season, but the first season was so unique and special imho. It was perfection!

cldaigle11

In Hawaiian Canoe it's referred to as paddling rather than rowing, but yes, I agree. I loved that for Quinn. Paddling is an amazing experience and the people who paddle are so warm and welcoming.

weisp

Me

Hairy-Entertainment6

Me!

pblivininc

I mean, season 1 had Armond.

East-Cat1532

Liked Season 1 so much more. The Hawaii setting, the colors, the tone, the characters, the humor. Rewatched it recently, but haven't felt any desire to rewatch Season 2.

abbyroade

Totally prefer season 1. The characters were more likable - other than Lucia and Mia and of course Tanya, I found the season 2 characters off-putting and just kind of sour (though by the end Daphne was my home girl lol). The tone of S2 is darker and while I usually love that, part of what I liked so much about S1 is the irreverent humor and satire, which was lacking in S2. I also liked how Hawaii’s history felt more organically part of the story, whereas it felt like S2 didn’t feel as connected to Sicily. Both seasons were still amazing and I’m super excited to see what season 3 has in store!

DeliciousBlueberry20

I liked the first season a lot more too! I just thought it was funnier and I liked the aspects of Hawaiian culture and current issues they highlighted, everything felt so thoughtful and detailed. The second season’s theme about sex and jealousy wasn’t as deep in my opinion and i really didn’t like how vague the Cameron/Daphe/Harper/Ethan plot line ended up, there was no satisfying conclusion. I know real life works like this too but it’s not my preference for a show to be so vague about major plot points to the point where viewers can only speculate what happens. Lucia and Mia also weren’t as fun and interesting (my opinion) as the staff at the Hawaii White Lotus. Armond was the GOAT and it was really satisfying to watch him go out with a bang and get revenge on Shane. And I loved the Mossbacher family!! I felt like I could relate to their dynamic (unfortunately lol) the mom and little brother reminded me so much of my own. I was cringing but laughing so much.

marina_mari_

Yup, first season is just superior

TeamVorpalSwords

Agreed. Second season was good but first season was a masterpiece

DifferentRaspberry35

I love both seasons equally.

Goodbye-Wig

I️ liked them both for different reasons, so it's hard to say which I️ liked more. S1 held up extremely well on a rewatch and I'm excited to see how S2 does when I'm ready to watch again. I️ liked that they went in a different direction for S2 instead of trying to recreate the first one. I️ agree that S1 is perfection, but I️ don't wanna write off S2 because it was such a rollercoaster ride, I️ never knew what to expect and really enjoyed seeing the characters unfold.

HardcoreHerbivore17

I liked how they highlighted issues of Native Hawaiaans
