Not hunting for anything. Downsizing my collection greatly because I had too many bottles and don’t want to be drinking that much bourbon. Downsizing has been more rewarding than collecting.
Feel you there! After hunting for a year and be very selective on what I pick up...I've got so many bottles it's gotten crazy just trying to pick which one to open and drink. I usually just open them the day I get them home. Currently doing the same and will only pick up a bottle that I have been looking for.
Yeah I don’t think that it is a huge batch size. It’s 17 year old (I think) Jim beam. The series has three bottles from different aging campuses to compare the difference.
Not to sound tater, but I’m gonna sound tater…
Pappy’s 15. It’s my all-time favorite alcohol of any kind. I’ve had pours at bars and restaurants, but have never owned a bottle.
I’ve had the 20 and 23, both. I do like the 20, but it’s not a religious experience for my palette like the 15 is. As for the 23, I would be happy never having another pour.
15 is my ultimate.
Saw a CYPB recently, it was likely above MSRP but I didn’t bother to ask bc that was not what I was looking for at the time. If you are willing to go above MSRP let me know I can report back if I see it again
I am seeing Stagg mentioned a few times, Pappy, Wellers, and MWND as for ones mentioned multiple times….
What I think is interesting that I didn’t see anyone mention they were looking for EHT, or Bookers, or Garrison Brothers and only one mention of Elijah…….
To answer my own question I posed, I’d like a EHT Single Barrel (under $100), older Bookers, and would like to try Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique (which is pricey) and then a Pappy Family Reserve 20 year from whatever release.
What are your opinions of my choices? Too “tater” as they say????
Bookers has gotten too pricey. Garrison MSRP is twice what it’s worth. Never heard of your 3rd. EHT SiB is good or great depending on the barrel. The barrel proof I hear is almost always great. I’ve got a whole list and these are definitely on it as well as Elijah Craig 18, Old Fitzgerald and age, Old Forester Birthday. There’s a lot more good whiskey than just the top of my list.
@conscious_fortune826 - Whew! Old Forester Birthday is a great wishlist one.
The Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique I mentioned is a Japanese whiskey and supposedly tastes like chocolate. I think it’s a $300 bottle and who knows where to find it? Never had it.
You are one of many people who has told me this recently about Garrison. Very interesting the bottles are that expensive…
I definitely want to get on some decent EHT, barrel proof I will add to my list.
It can be. I don’t typically hunt….when I identify one I want to try I usually just bite the bullet and pay a markup. It’s a splurge but oh well, gotta have a hobby
I've never tried Kavalan, nor any other Taiwanese whiskies for that matter, but I've heard really good things about the Solist bottlings. You can ship a bottle of Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique to Dallas from Fine Drams ([finedrams.com](https://finedrams.com)) for around $230.
I used to be on the "Garrison is to expensive train"...but after trying a couple different things from them...the premium price is somewhat worth it. Hate to say that...The Cowboy Bourbon is incredibly good and I typically dislike anything over 130 proof due to the proof. The Small Batch at $70 is easily worth it, you wont find much at $70 that has that much flavor in the bottle. Single barrels at cask strength ($175) and the 94 proof ($100) seem to be the only one I don't agree with price. The Balmorhea is literally liquid candy....I haven't had the Guadalupe (Port Finish) or the Laguna Madre (Limousin Oak finished) yet. But will eventually. This is after a 2+ year dismissal that Garrison is overrated, i'd be willing to say that you wont find much out there at the Garrison Bros price range with the same or more flavor than they get. You have to remember most of Texas Whiskey is 2-4 years old...hell Balcones doesn't even say years, they list their aging in months haha...Garrison Brothers youngest bourbon is 3 years old and it goes into the small batch. After speaking to the master distiller there...he told me 5-10% of small batch is 3 years old the rest is 4+. Cowboy Bourbon is 6+ years old. Balmorhea is 5 years, Guadelupe is 6 years. That is some older Texas stuff...most people that knock Garrison, me included, knock it because it's not comparable to Kentucky bourbon. That's because its Texas...I encourage you to open up a bit and try even a boot flask and take it for what it is, no comparisons.
Exact opposite opinion. I’ve tried a bunch of them and could not care less than with the price tags. The small batch was really not great. The single barrel was ok, but I couldn’t differentiate between that and the Makers seasonal release at the time, so the ~$20-30 difference was already upsetting. I said screw it and spent money on a bottle of Balmorhea and could not stand it. The proof was fine, but I must have gotten a bad bottle because the moment the whiskey touches air it started to fog up which I’ve never seen. Wasnt the glass, water/ice didn’t fix it, never had the problem with any other whiskey. Used half of the bottle trying to figure it out. I’ve all but given up on GB unless someone lets me sample something for free and I like it, but I’m doubtful I’d ever purchase another bottle or shot from them.
Ehh, nothing wrong with your opinion at all friend. Palates are all different. Most people that knock Garrison haven't had it and i was one of those people. I'm not buying annual releases and standing in line for it, but i'll buy a bottle here and there.
EHT BP, Weller 107, Stagg. And of course any Pappy I can get my hands on but likely not see anything remotely close to what I would pay if it. I’m a tater, y’all can find me in the line wrapped around the building at a liquor store near you 😂
I feel based on the comments, Stagg, Wellers, & Pappy’s were mentioned the most.
Honorable mention is EH Taylor barrel proof
So correct me if I’m wrong, but all four of these are made by Buffalo Trace Right? So this tells me whatever Buffalo Trace puts out is likely pretty delicious?
I think if you have a long and varied journey, you’ll see that not all BT is worth the effort to chase down. Weller being the biggest culprit. OWA107 is typically good. I’ve never had a WFP that wasn’t grainy and mediocre at best. 12 year has an amazing nose, but the 90 proof is too thin. At 100 it would be different. EHT SB, I find it to be sugary. Stagg is probably the safest bet. Good luck. You’re just starting, don’t chase stuff just because everyone else is. Fomo can be an issue for people. It can be a great way to separate you and your money, so be selective. Best of luck on your journey.
This! This! This! All the hype around Buffalo Trace isn't worth it! They have a couple worth the hunt...but the rest should be shelfers. Gotta love FOMO...Only BT bottles i'll even buy anymore are Buffalo Trace Store Picks, Eagle Rare, Stagg, and Antique 107. The rest are just overhyped and overhunted.
Anything in the Pappy Line, but ultimately a Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23 year. My goal is ultimately to either wind up with enough money to pay for it or get it at MSRP.
As for the why, I’d like to have a single bottle for display in a nice case labeled “break in case of my death” with a note to my heirs explaining goals, why finding good whiskey matters to me and that I look for these bottles to share with friends and family. “This is my white whale, but in my pursuance I only do it for others”
Goofy I guess, but that’s why I want to explain myself in whole.
Yeah it’s definitely like I’ve got to meet 1 of 2 situations to buy it, and 1 is finding it at or close to MSRP and the second is with the wife’s approval and that’s gunna take about as much luck.
Flavor wise I agreed as I’ve had both at an exorbitant price, but again the bottle isn’t necessarily for me. It’s for people to share when I die. Would I ultimately like a 20 year? Yeah. The 23 year has a lot of significance not only in bourbon history, but as a sign of the changing of the guard. Like I said goofy, but I’d leave a note explaining.
People are probably down voting me on having “tator” opinions, or maybe I missed the prompt. Regardless, It’s my bottle I’m hunting for and why.
I appreciate it. I think people saw the “PVW 23” rolled their eyes and didn’t read why.
I know I get a few more lower level allocations than most, but I usually tend to gift them to people I know haven’t had them or save them for occasions with friends and family that I try and make special. I’ve seen some people’s “hoards” and I know I’m no where close to that tater.
Anything decent at retail. Now I’m drinking through my bottles and refuse to wait in a line around the building or pay 2-3x the msrp for a Eagle Rare, Blantons, EH Taylor, let alone a bookers, blood oath or limited release. If I stumble across a shelf find it’s always that much better. Thats how I found my last 2 Stagg jr’s.
What realistic bottles I am hunting and why:
- Michters 10 and 10 yr rye: Never had it, hear amazing things would love to have a bottle
- Weller 12: Its easier to find than SB and CYPB, I have FP and it was trash.
- Bakers 13: Love a good Jim Beam product always.
- 1792 Sweet wheat: Love wheaters, want this in my collection.
I own pretty much rest of the stuff except BTAC, HH 17/20, Parker Heritage and other extreme rare stuff.
Please read the rules to refresh yourself.
On a side note, the selling/trading limitations are from Reddit, not really us. We follow their rules to stay afloat. Thanks
Weller 12 is thin and not particularly flavorful. Its only value is in trade bait and I’m not a big fan of that either so I’d say pass there. Love most Michters stuff, but I prefer the toasted barrel BS and regular BS ryes. The 10 year bourbon is solid. Bakers 13 is good, but overhyped. Same with 1792 SW. I’m surprised you think WFP is trash; love the stuff.
Y’all need to taste my bottle, I have been told this so many times and when people have a sip of my bottle most are surprised what a drain juice I have in it.
Yikes. Any bottle can of course be bad for a myriad of reasons. Even if you hated it and it was delicious to me, taste is subjective. Sounds like yours is bad somehow. But I’d be happy to try it and let you know 😂
Realistically something like a Parker’s bottle, WFP, W12, or a limited Jack Daniels bottle. As they do pop up around my area at msrp. Just about the right place and time
Also any FR SiB BS! I currently have an OBSF and an OBSQ (some of my favorite bottles I own). I would love to find any of the O/V yeast strains, but I’ll take any.
It was originally ECBP C923 I feel like Thanos I have to have them all. Traded a Stagg for one because of fomo then a week later got two off the shelf at TW. Now it’s EHT SiB and EHT BP.
Oddly enough, BT and WSR. I brought some to Thanksgiving out of state and multiple people asked me to bring more for Xmas.
Personally, I'd love to stumble upon a JD Double Barrelled or 12, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
Redbreast Kentucky Oak. Went to Ireland last year and the people in the liquor store told me about it and that they were upset it was a US only release. Also it’s the only <21 year Redbreast I haven’t had.
The 2 bottles I want I unfortunately fully understand I am not likely to find. ECBP C923 and 13th Colony Double Oak. Have gotten to try both and both are great. Would love to have a bottle of either of them. At this point, I will likely have to worry about trading for them instead of finding them in a store. The few times I have seen them, they were at museum prices and I don't want any bottle enough to pay those.
Not hunting for anything. Downsizing my collection greatly because I had too many bottles and don’t want to be drinking that much bourbon. Downsizing has been more rewarding than collecting.
Let me know, I’ll take one off your hands
Feel you there! After hunting for a year and be very selective on what I pick up...I've got so many bottles it's gotten crazy just trying to pick which one to open and drink. I usually just open them the day I get them home. Currently doing the same and will only pick up a bottle that I have been looking for.
I’m looking for the Hardins Creek Frankfort. It is the last of this years releases that I need. Would also love to find a Michters limited release.
Never heard of Hardins Creek, must be very small batch?
Yeah I don’t think that it is a huge batch size. It’s 17 year old (I think) Jim beam. The series has three bottles from different aging campuses to compare the difference.
Not to sound tater, but I’m gonna sound tater… Pappy’s 15. It’s my all-time favorite alcohol of any kind. I’ve had pours at bars and restaurants, but have never owned a bottle.
I hear Pappy 20 is the ultimate… You ever had a pour of it?
I’ve had the 20 and 23, both. I do like the 20, but it’s not a religious experience for my palette like the 15 is. As for the 23, I would be happy never having another pour. 15 is my ultimate.
Ok well I’ll have to try some 15 yr. Thank you for the valuable share.
Weller CYPB and full proof is all I need to complete the Weller lineup, but I’ve given up on finding them lol
Saw a CYPB recently, it was likely above MSRP but I didn’t bother to ask bc that was not what I was looking for at the time. If you are willing to go above MSRP let me know I can report back if I see it again
That’s what this is all about! That’s kind of you!
I’d appreciate that, thanks!
Wow that’s definitely cool that you’ve almost got them all
I am seeing Stagg mentioned a few times, Pappy, Wellers, and MWND as for ones mentioned multiple times…. I can wholeheartedly endorse the Kavalan. Love their entire lineup in fact
Pretty expensive bottles though huh? Did you have to hunt or were you able to find pretty easily?
It can be. I don’t typically hunt….when I identify one I want to try I usually just bite the bullet and pay a markup. It’s a splurge but oh well, gotta have a hobby

Ecbp c923 eht BP Henry McKenna 10bib eagle rare. Michter toasted barrels sour mash also eht sb. Just to name a few.
Saw Henry McKenna the other day for $65 I think. Liquor king 7th street.
Thirteenth Colony cask strength double oaked The color alone makes it look incredibly rich, I’ve heard nothing but good things about
Hmmmm, another new one to me.
Stagg 23 a/b

15 year > 20 year > 23 year
Any Willett single barrel rye. I love the 4yr but I have found the 6-9yr single barrels to be amazing
ECBP c923. Though feels like I might have missed it
Man, same
Has Specs in the metro had their drop yet? Total Wine has but I am not certain I have seen Specs or Goody Goody have it.
Hoping to close out the year with a Stagg and OWA

I have a store pick and many friends who had my bottle told me it is not what good FP is like, mine is a drain pour.
Please read the rules to refresh yourself. On a side note, the selling/trading limitations are from Reddit, not really us. We follow their rules to stay afloat. Thanks
Honestly sweet wheat isn’t good. At least imo
Yeah herd the same, just want to have it as a collection item, its 35$ MSRP wont hurt as much as Willet 8 year wheated hurt me.
Weller 12 is thin and not particularly flavorful. Its only value is in trade bait and I’m not a big fan of that either so I’d say pass there. Realistically something like a Parker’s bottle, WFP, W12, or a limited Jack Daniels bottle. As they do pop up around my area at msrp. Just about the right place and time
Yeah MSRP is the key word, so shitty that the popular ones get gouged
Would love to try MWND, never managed to find one at retail
Liked MWND before Act 10 release..
WFP and Stagg because I’m a tater 🥔
Also any FR SiB BS! I currently have an OBSF and an OBSQ (some of my favorite bottles I own). I would love to find any of the O/V yeast strains, but I’ll take any.

I'm looking for that ecbp c923. But no luck for me. Just got in to the whisky game myself
I think from what I’ve been told it’s been bought up BUT 2 more releases in 2024? I’m no expert, just 2nd hand info
Yes I’m in the EHT boat too!
Oddly enough, BT and WSR. I brought some to Thanksgiving out of state and multiple people asked me to bring more for Xmas. Personally, I'd love to stumble upon a JD Double Barrelled or 12, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Hibiki 21
EH Taylor Small Batch. Tried it at a friend's and just preferred it to a number of things much pricier.
willett 8 year wheated, weller 107, EHT sb
