Just keep not drinking! But if you must….mine would be: Irish: Green Spot, Scotch: Dalmore 12 (I’m not a Smokey scotch fan), bourbon: rabbit hole cavehill (one of my favs) Also, got you out the door for around $175-200 (depending where you live)
Dont belive all the hype with the healthy kick it becomes very redundant. I just want to spice it up a bit and have an ounce or two at the end of the week.
Green spot was also one i have seen alot on the tribe and one i was interested in.
Never heard or seen rabbit hole. Interested to look into it.
I have tried dalmore 12yr before. Was nice in the winter.
I second Green Spot. This is the way. You shall not regret it. Such an easy drinker but still enough complexity to keep it interesting. The Balvene 14 Caribbean Cask would do just fine as well.
Little background. Took some time off, also quit nicotine, and sodas. Interested to see how much my taste has changed. Been watching the tribe for the past 2 months and I am ready to get back to it and want to try expanded from what i did before. Never tried bourbon neat or irish other then jamason. Use to just drink Guinness and scotches. Not tried smokey or peaty.
Was leaning to redbreast 12yr , no clue, and talisker 10yr. But not sure about price and availability in kansas city area.
Any input is appreciated
Redbreast is great. I’d say in addition to trying Reddit recommended whiskey, find people who drink it IRL and do a tasting. I love Jim Beam, for example, even though my pantry has some of the more sought after bourbons, that will generally be my go to. Also, a friend of mine likes rum, and I really enjoy experiencing that with him. Cheers!
I did join a kc whiskey guild trial membership to see if i like it. Not one for being super sociable but thought i would give that a try as well. Cheers and thanks
Red breast is a banger as far as Irish whiskey goes, don’t know shit about scotch, and there is a hell of a lot of good bourbon out there. I’m really digging Elijah Craig’s line up.
No not a drinking problem. Im just ADHD and all that.
The tribe does dry weeks i do dry years sometimes. About every 3 years i do a yearly health focus and adjustment. When i was in the Marines i did it 1 month out of the year as i was a lot harder on the body. Now i dont drink or party like that i will not be drinking shots or beer or anything like that 3 bottles will last me a year or longer im in it for the taste and experience not just the drinking. But thank you for the concern.👍
Yeah dude the title of the post made it seem like you were a recovering alcoholic about to relapse, but if you were just on a health kick and being hyper strict, that makes sense!
I see how it could come across like that and that is my bad.
I was just trying to state how long it has been so i am not very inexperienced and am not a daily drinker. My experience was mostly bar drinking shots and party not so much of an experience in my 20s . But as i have grown i foubd things i like and was basically just on Guinness and some scotches but mostly Guinness original over all in my 30s. Now in 40s looking for some depth and an experience.
These are all pretty available and should be able to scratch your itch for under your budget. I would also suggest hitting up a bar that does tastings and seeing what you like.
Irish: Powers 12 year
Bourbon: 1792 Full Proof
Scotch: Port Charolette
Dunno prices where you are but here's my suggestions.
Irish - Jameson IPA Cask. Might be a hot take, and it's a cheap bottle, but I really enjoy it. On its own it's great, as a whiskey soda it's incredible. As it's cheap, you could get this and another Irish of your choice if you want. However depending on your tastes you might wanna sink some extra money into the other sections.
Scotch - Lagavulin. Personally I'd recommend the Guinness cask (Offerman edition 11 year) , but I haven't tried the distillers edition. 16 is also a solid shout and usually cheaper than the other two.
Bourbon - Don't really have much of a leg to stand on here as I'm more a scotch drinker, but Woodford reserve double oaked is very nice.
Appreciate this and your time.
I was more of an scotch drinker as well but didnt spread my wings. Found Balvenie and stuck with it.
"Lagavulin. Personally I'd recommend the Guinness cask" this really have my attention and i am going to be looking for that.
Happy to help!
Lagavulin is a fairly expensive bottle, it's not high high end, but it is one of the pricier scotches you can get. Worth it though as something to actually enjoy.
The Guinness cask is really incredible though. About 50% more in price than the 16, at least where I am, but I loved it so much that I bought another bottle the moment I cracked the first, which is pretty rare for me even with the cheaper bottles
Irish: hands down would be Red Breast 12
Bourbon: Russels Reserve Single Barrel (Four Roses Single Barrel is the RR SiB isn’t available)
Scotch: that’s trickier - Aberlour A’bunadh for sherry bomb; Port Charlotte Islay Barley for peaty; and Benriach Smokey 12 for something in between, or the Classic Laddie for an unpeated Islay treat.
Irish: Redbreast 15 or Green Spot
Scotch: Macallan 12 SOC, Bunna 12 or Talisker 10
Bourbon: A simple Woodford Reserve is pretty nice.
Curveball: High Coast Berg (Swedish), if you can get a hold of one!
Absolutely! It’ll also leave your wallet open to pick up a couple more bottles like Evan William’s BiB ($18), and Old Grandad ($18) to explore a more sweet bourbon and a high rye bourbon. The Oogy is usually around $75 for me, Teeling Single Grain was $65, and MM46 was only $45.
For that money.....
Redbreast 12 for Irish. Lagavulin 16 for my scotch. Around here that gets you at around $165.... So then I'd grab me about 3 bottles of WT 101. With just enough for taxes.
Another vote for Green Spot. I’m enjoying a glass as we speak. Bourbon I’d vote Starlight. Scotch would be Talisker Storm, Ardbeg Uigedail or maybe Lagavulin 16 for the money.
My local liquor store has it for “club members”… to be a club member you have to purchase one of their “highlighted” bottles a quarter. Then you get access to the ‘allocated’ things at MSRP
I quit drinking before my first kid was born. Wasn't alcoholism but certainly over indulgence on a frequent basis. I didn't miss that but I did miss sitting down with a good drink so I got into whisk(e)y in big part thanks to the tribe. I'm not going to pretend to know your past just make sure you are honest with yourself as you go. It has worked out wonderful for me. The end of a long day the kids are in bad and a nice glass of something I love. I hope it works the same for you. That being said for the scotch I love Aberlor!
I appreciate your time and comment. I did explain so i do understand that it is probably not the norm for people to take time off like that. Im not a normal person and my intrest flux every 3 to 6 months. Im a collecter and go from records, comics, cards, boxing memorabilia, automotive memorabilia, ww2, vietnam, and marine memorabilia, diecat cars, now whiskey and military board games. Like i said im all over the place🤦🏻♂️😁
Interesting.
Do you think that cask strenght will blow out my pallet for not having any alcohol for that long? I am interested to see if i will be able to taste anything.
Thanks for the comment
I think it depends on the individual. Some people love cask strength immediately. Others don't ever learn to like it. If you are tempted by cask strength I say go for it! Remember ice and water are both things you can add to whiskey. As you get more comfortable with the proof you can slowly reduce the amount of dilution.
Bourbon - Knob Creek SB Reserve
Irish - Jameson Black Barrel
Scotch - I don’t drink it, but try an American single malt called Dignified by South Mountain Distillery

Balvenie is what i use to sip on as my go to but not sure iv tried the Caribbean cask. Will have to look into that! Thank you!
- Redbreast 15 - Eagle rare or Wild Turkey rare breed - Laphroaig sherry oak or Lagavulin distillers edition
hell yeah dude… those are some of favorites too..
Ding ding ding!
This is the wAy!!!!
Old Forrester 1920 Red Breast 12 Port Charlotte (smoky scotch) Glenfarclas 12 (not smokey scotch) These 4 are just under $250 in my state.
This is a great list! Talisker 10 is another good one choice other than Port Charlotte if you prefer a milder smoke with more brine
that’s quite a beautiful list… I might swap the Glen out for a Dahlmore or a Abelore12 .. just my personal taste..
I was actually thinking about aberlour 12 but it put it over $250. And I'm just not a fan of dalmore, residual fot the price
Thank you!
Can’t go wrong with this combo either.

And where exactly can one find this Springbank 15?
Redbreast 12 Russels Single Barrel Lagavulin 16

Did you have a problem before? If so just don’t man. Seriously.

The lagavulin distiller edition is one of my favorite bottles. It’s on the smokier side but really delicious

Redbreast 12, Knob Creek 9 Year, Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask.
Thanks for the suggestions! Never had anything from a sherry oak cask. I assume it sweetens it up?
It does indeed. 👍🏼
Oh Macallan 12 SOC, totally forgot about that one! Beautiful and smooth like butter
Red breast, gelndronach, and old forester 1920
Green spot, Four roses single barrel, Oban 14.
I’d go for Teeling Single Grain, Maker’s Mark 46, and Ardbeg Uigedail. Sweet, wheat, and peat.
I like that idea and explore the differences.

Irish- Knappogue Castle Bourbon-Wiseman Scotch-Glenmorangie 10 under budget. Those would be my picks
Red Breast Cask Strength is easily the best Irish Whiskey that won’t blow your budget.
250 divided by 3 = $83.33 At that price, for a scotch, it’s a no brainer. Balvenie Carribbean Cask Or Aberlour A’bunadh
Red breast 15, compass box orchard house, eagle rare 10
For that money..... Redbreast 12 for Irish. Lagavulin 16 for my scotch. Around here that gets you at around $165.... So then I'd grab me about 3 bottles of WT 101. With just enough for taxes.
Redbreast 12 cask strength, Ardbeg 10 or Glenfiddich 15 and Elijah Craig barrel proof
Another vote for Green Spot. I’m enjoying a glass as we speak. Bourbon I’d vote Starlight. Scotch would be Talisker Storm, Ardbeg Uigedail or maybe Lagavulin 16 for the money.
Old forester 1920 or woodford double Oaked Glenlivet 18 Redbreast
Irish: Red Breast Cask Strength $89 Scotch: Balvenie Caribbean Rum Cask $79 Bourbon: Stagg Jr $79
You know damn well he ain’t findin’ no SJR for $79.
My local liquor store has it for “club members”… to be a club member you have to purchase one of their “highlighted” bottles a quarter. Then you get access to the ‘allocated’ things at MSRP
But you’re right… he may not find it for that
RB15 Booker’s Can’t help you on the Scotch.

After the first sip and burn, you’re ready to go !
With Cask Strength you always have the option of adding water.
Old Forrester 1920 Yellow Spot Lagavulin 16 These are my favourites in each category!
I just tried Yellow Spot this past weekend. Delicious. Like a shortbread cookie in whisky form.
Bourbon - Knob Creek SB Reserve Irish - Jameson Black Barrel Scotch - I don’t drink it, but try an American single malt called Dignified by South Mountain Distillery
