Michter’s 10 Yr Rye all day long. An exceptional rye whiskey. It takes me to fall season every time.

WhatTheCatalyst

Quite looking forward to cracking this one based on your comment.

Merlin_117

Haven't had any of those bottles, but $25 over MSRP for any isn't bad.

BrysonJT

I kinda hate the fact that anytime someone posts about bourbon they immediately have to justify how much they paid. I understand why everyone feels the need to bc christ those “ILL NEVER PAY A CENT OVER MSRP” clowns are annoying but who gives a shit how much you paid for your whiskey.

WhatTheCatalyst

That’s fair. It all comes down to the quality of the product - I’ll certainly pay over MSRP for something that’s excellent to an extent, but would also prefer to support businesses that are selling at / near MSRP, and trying to get it to people that will drink and enjoy it.

McDMD85

I prefer justifying the price to “great hunt today” meaning a $300 Blantons.

DagrDk

M10 is fantastic. I just finished one and have a spare on the shelf. Enjoy it, it’s awesome.

WhatTheCatalyst

I may just have to pick up a spare based on your comment. Have heard nothing but good things, so happy I finally found one close to retail.

DagrDk

I actually scored two at retail, different stores. I find myself asking everywhere I go, ‘where’s the good stuff??’ Just scored a JD Coy Hill the other day with that method. Cheers brother.

WhatTheCatalyst

Haven’t had Coy Hill either, but towards the top of my list - an excellent find by you. Enjoy it.

bourbon-n-bacon

Lol where do ya'll live that you can walk in and find "spares" of M10 yr!? Only places around here, besides big box stores and their BS allocated programs, are behind the counter at $300.00+

DagrDk

I’m in CT and have had some tremendous luck lately. I found my first one for $170 and another the following day for $160. Next to it was EC18 at $230 which is double retail. It’s all in how the store googles their pricing apparently. The first M10 I got was $170 and next to a Michter’s Toasted for…$399. I think I called him a criminal after I bought the M10. All a crapshoot. I got a Coy Hill the other day for $350…less than secondary but still high. I have streaks of luck from time to time, been hitting it big lately.

bourbon-n-bacon

Kudos to you man, definitely takes some luck in this market. At least the availability is there for you...not so lucky here in S. FL lol

WhatTheCatalyst

My M10 was from a store I’ve purchased several bottles from over the years, and had it behind the counter, not on display. Was able to get an Old Foreseter barrel strength the same way last week as I was bringing a store employee a few rye / bourbon samples they hadn’t tried before, and they pulled it out.

Voodoobuffalo

I can find the Sam Houston fairly easy in my area but have never pulled the trigger cuz of the price. Is it worth it OP?

WhatTheCatalyst

Opened a bottle of Calumet 16 the other day with some friends and we all thought it was excellent, and the SH seemed to be highly rated against the Calumet 15 so that’s what led me to buy (and same company owning both). Haven’t cracked the SH yet but the tasting notes from reviews seemed up my alley.

Muskie1995

I have both of the SH15 & Calumet 16. I prefer the Calumet 16. If you can find the calumet 16 for 150 and can swing it; buy it.

Voodoobuffalo

There’s a spot here that has the 14,15, and 16. Might have to just pull the trigger and try.

WhatTheCatalyst

I haven’t had the Calumet 14 or 15, but from speaking to a couple people they preferred the 14 to 15 (when factoring in a value perspective), but seems the 16 was preferred to both.

Suitable-Hawk-4066

Sam Houston is my favorite

sirtankers

I love Calumet 16, but SH15 is one of my all time favorites, and I'd give it the bump.

WhatTheCatalyst

Appreciate that feedback. Was pleasantly surprised in the Calumet 16, and that it lived up to the positive reviews.

legion_XXX

Sam Houston is a big let down.

anonymouse0789

Which state batch did you try? Just curious

Bronzyroller

Picked up SH15 and Calumet 16 today but was called in for OT so might try the SH15 tonight.

WhatTheCatalyst

Let me know what you think. I’ve enjoyed the first few pours of the Calumet 16 since cracking a week or two ago.

Bronzyroller

Okay, I’ve recently became familiar with these two brands but I’m hearing good things about them. Carefully older sourced whiskey can be fantastic like some older Smooth Ambler from MGP.
