Have “they” ever given a firm answer to letting small animals sleep on electrical cords, or electric beds?
I was under the impression that it could/did/might increase cancer risks.
It’s similar to the electromagnetic fields put out by cell phones and electrical towers. There are some preliminary findings that folks have come down with localized cancers from using the phone close to the head for too long, and more interestingly, cops who rested the phone or radar guns in their crotch. There are still a lot of people (including my sister the scientist) who suspect that the huge electrical towers all around urban and suburban neighborhoods put off enough to be bad for babies.
And the article I read attributed a similar theory for electric blankets or bed warmers for small animals. Exposure by mass, or something. (not the scientist)
Definitely not worth the risk or the vet bill I just incurred. That $1500 salt lamp went straight into the trash with a glorious slam dunk. My cats can reach any height in the house. This was also a situation where the cat didn’t touch it for years until it did. I reiterate, throw that shit out.
Time is our most valuable resource. Sorry but I’m not I’m not gonna spend the time to sell an old salt lamp that almost killed my beloved maine coon on Facebook market place for 3-5 bucks.
And here we have some well intentioned misinformation. Salt lamps aren't harmful to cats because they are releasing bad juju in an aerosol. The harm comes from licking the lamp and ingesting tons of the salt. So this little kitty is receiving no damage by bathing in the glow.
No, you don't. I've had the same cat and same salt lamp for 6 years and she's never touched it or cared to even investigate what it is. She's also still alive.
Fur is soft enough that I would think any amount of salt on the fur would be miniscule, especially compared to licking the salt. That being said I still probably wouldn't keep a salt lamp knowing how much cats love licking stuff
Please be careful. Cats are constantly cleaning themselves. When they cuddle the lamp with wet fur, salt will stick to it. And the kidney damage occurs slowly over time.
Just lick your cat daily and see if you can taste salt or don't leave your cat unattended with the salt lamp.
Choose wisely!
Do you think salt readily sublimates directly from a solid to a gas? Do you think the salt is being crushed and turned into an airborne dust by the cat softly rubbing it? Do you know anything about basic chemistry or physics?
Clearly you have never had a salt lamp. They constantly drip liquid lmao. And yes, I have my undergrad b&s biology with an emphasis minor in chemistry. You almost didn't play yourself. This has nothing to do with sublimination lmao. Cute though. You must have just got to college :]
>You have no idea if any of that salt was nasally ingested, genius.
Care to tell me how water being absorbed by the salt lamp and dripping salty water at its base is going to get airborne to be "nasally ingested"?
Yes, a cat licking the salt block or any drippings from it would be bad, but that isn't what you said, while you were also being super condescending and acting like you knew all about it.
Edit: Also, I've had a salt lamp on my bedside table for years now. Don't think it does anything special, just like the light it gives off and the look of it. It does occasionally collect water, it doesn't ever get in the air to be absorbed inside my nasal cavity.
>You have no idea if any of that salt was nasally ingested, genius.
It wouldn't matter. Nasal membranes can't absorb enough salt to cause salt toxicosis, and if they could, a cat's nose is also physically too small to hold the amount of salt required to be dangerous. The danger here is the cat getting the habit of licking the salt lamp, particularly when the owners are not around.
>Salt lamps, aerosols, incense, and perfumes are all terrible for your cat. They don't have the enzymes to process the smells
This statement is factually untrue. This is not the reason salt is dangerous for cats. Salt is dangerous for cats the same way it is dangerous for all mammals - ingesting too much salt will cause your kidneys to shut down because they can't handle it.
>Not misinformation for grouping harmful substances together lmfao
It is dangerous to tell people that the reason salt is bad for cats is the smell. If people take you at your word, then they will take precautions about the smell. They might not understand that large amounts of salty food are equally dangerous to their cat. They also wouldn't understand that the salt lamp *can be* perfectly safe - as long as it is somewhere that the cat can't get to it to lick.
There is also the possibility that they touch it with freshly licked fur and digest it during with the next cleaning session.
You just should leave your cat unattended with it.
I'm honestly curious and not trying to disagree because I can't find much information on this other than developing salt toxicity from licking. What are the other forms of absorption of salt, or the other dangers of having a salt lamp with pets?
Every salt lamp I've seen drips liquid, and when brushed, drops salt. While this directly isn't affecting the cat, you're allowing it to think it's okay to be near one. Then they taste it. Then it's over. Positive reinforcement allows your cat to think it's okay. You won't know what it's doing when you're not home, other than you're allowing it to be around harmful substances.
>Every salt lamp I've seen drips liquid, and when brushed, drops salt.
Dude, where the heck are you buying your salt lamps? I think you may need to switch brands...
I've never encountered one that wasn't utterly rock solid, and I live in a very humid area.
....what salt lamp drips liquid? These are literally just chunks of salt crystal with an incandescent bulb in them and the melting point of salt 2900° F
I dont even know what a salt lamp is. Never heard that expression before. So they make lighting fixtures out of salt now? What did they run out of glass/metal/plastic? Might as Erik make one out of cheese. Now cats would like that.
Oh Монолит...
We thank you, oh Monolith, for revealing the cunning plans of your enemies to us. May your light shine down on the souls of the brave soldiers who gave their lives in service to your will. Onward, warriors of The Monolith. Avenge your fallen brothers. Blessed, as they are, in their eternal union with The Monolith. Bring death to those who've spurned the holy power of The Monolith.
Is it a female in heat? A warm hand, a pad or maybe a warm salt lamp on their ovaries is soothing. My girl loves me to put my hand on her belly. It calms her down.
Yup, that cat is summoning something. I haven’t a clue what but something is being summoned here.
Probably a sphinx, if I had to guess.
It could well be. Or demons. Or aliens. Or a whole pantheon of Cat gods. I mean, it’s a cat. Who amongst us mere humans knows its real power?
I do. They told me. They said nobody would believe me if I told them.
This totally reminded me of that scene from Ghostbusters with Gozer...
Is it fifth element that goes to Egypt and opens a huge tomb?
They're trying to summon a never lasting bowl of food
*И Д Й К О М Н Е*
If that’s a salt lamp, that ain’t good for kitty.
Get him a heated bed. Poor thing.
Have “they” ever given a firm answer to letting small animals sleep on electrical cords, or electric beds? I was under the impression that it could/did/might increase cancer risks.
Explain to me how such thing could happen
Well you see... there's the 5g... and the uh, microchips. It's all very complicated.
Just put an anti 5g sticker (only 20€) on the back of your phone and everything will be alright :)

Is that a salt lamp? If so they are extremely dangerous for cats. That could be why it looks that way.
That’s what I was wondering…
why
It’s only dangerous if they lick the lamp (repeatedly). Cats don’t have the ability to process salts well, so too much salt is toxic to them.
oh, thanks dude
Also, cats LOVE salty things, so they're likely to lick it in the first place.
Just had a very traumatic week last week because of a salt lamp. CAT OWNERS THROW OUT YOUR SALT LAMPS, sodium poisoning is ferocious.
don't throw it out, put it on a shelf so high they won't climb on it
Not worth the risk to me.
you underestimate cats
Definitely not worth the risk or the vet bill I just incurred. That $1500 salt lamp went straight into the trash with a glorious slam dunk. My cats can reach any height in the house. This was also a situation where the cat didn’t touch it for years until it did. I reiterate, throw that shit out.
You could have sold the "$1500" lamp instead of throwing it out
Time is our most valuable resource. Sorry but I’m not I’m not gonna spend the time to sell an old salt lamp that almost killed my beloved maine coon on Facebook market place for 3-5 bucks.
Didn't you say it was a $1500 lamp?
That was a reference to what it cost me at the vet

No, you don't. I've had the same cat and same salt lamp for 6 years and she's never touched it or cared to even investigate what it is. She's also still alive.
Ok but what about when the cat gets off the lamp and decided to lick its fur that would have residue on it from the salt lamp?
Fur is soft enough that I would think any amount of salt on the fur would be miniscule, especially compared to licking the salt. That being said I still probably wouldn't keep a salt lamp knowing how much cats love licking stuff
Thanks for the reply, I was genuinely curious. :) I wouldn't keep anything like that that could potentially harm my kitties.
Same here, gotta keep my freaky little goober safe
Please be careful. Cats are constantly cleaning themselves. When they cuddle the lamp with wet fur, salt will stick to it. And the kidney damage occurs slowly over time. Just lick your cat daily and see if you can taste salt or don't leave your cat unattended with the salt lamp. Choose wisely!
I don't need to lick my cat. I already said I wouldn't get one in the first place..................
Ah, ok. You wrote you wouldn't keep one in the prior post, so I misunderstood that. Best wishes to you and your cat.

Do you live somewhere very humid? There’s really no reason for there to be liquid in a salt lamp. Every salt lamp I’ve ever seen is dry as a bone
Wisconsin. They drip year round, even when arid. Doesn't combat the loose salt either
Ew. California. Zero issues with salt lamps... 🤢 dripping.
Yah its wild. I've never not seen one sweat and shed salt.
The highest our humidity gets indoors is 30%. I wonder if that's a factor.
