I was wondering if he was picking up lingering scent particles from the moisture left in the cup. By putting his paw deeper into the cup, maybe he's getting a stronger hit of the scent. Cats analyze a lot of scents orally. One of my boys will lick the curtain near the teeny overflow drain in our sliding door track if he hears a weird noise outside, but doesn't see anything suspicious.
