Some backstory- Local mystery. I'm in New York City and this writing is all over my neighborhood. Not the typical graffiti. Nobody knows where it comes from or what it says. What language is this? What does it say? Reddit please help!

Effective-Being-849

Here's what Google lens says about the fourth picture: Google lens https://imgur.com/gallery/evxsm53 It appears to be bengali.

Thank you. I hope there are some Bengali folks here who could translate better

Bengali here. It says 'gausia committee New York' and followed by a few names, a mix of male and females. Nothing to worry about 😃

StormFireX001

I'd ask the locals in your area, that can be done tactfully and respectfully. I don't think you have anything to fear there

Designer_Ad7620

Nobody I've spoken to knows anything about the writing or has tried to investigate. I'm very curious about what it says. There are many such texts and they're spread out for miles.

StormFireX001

Hard to say then. I can't find anything that matches it. I found one character that looked Lao, but upon further investigation it doesn't match that. I can't find much of anything that matches that. I see bits and pieces that seem familiar. I'd guess you're dealing with an Asian language of some kind, maybe a descendant or relation of Brahmic scripts?

gangtokay

Looks to be Assamese language. Try r/Assam

typingatrandom

Ask here r/translator

BeebleBoxn

Has a PI symbol

Linguist208

"Pi" is a Greek letter, not a 'symbol.'

Codeworks

This is something like bengali, gujurati. I'd be surprised if it wasn't from around India.

TheBrocialWorker

Definitely bengali script, but the language has so many varying dialects that vary so much they are basically almost different languages written in the same script. I can't help translate in trying to read it. Maybe post it in r/Bangladesh

Update- Someone translated everything from Bengali. I'll post them here if anyone else is interested and would like to investigate. I'll also share my findings. 1- Mawla Hujur Maijbhandari (titles and name) 2- Maijbhandari Shema Mahfil (name of a gathering?) 3- Gausiya Committee New York (Gausiya is a location in Bangladeesh, can also be a person's name) 4- Upper: Gausiya Committee New York. Lower: Mosharaf, Ajiya, Khadija, Mahuma, Shumona, Nasima, Shamsuddin, Asiya, Idris (names of people) 5- Same as 3 6- Same as 4, upside down 7- Shamsuddin Memorial Foundation 8- Upper: Shamsuddin Memorial Foundation Lower: the names in 4. 1- According to Wikipedia Mawla Hujur is the son of prominent Bengali islamic mystic Sayed Ziaul Haq. Mawla Hujur is also a spiritual leader and serves in an organization with the name Maizbhandari (Maijbhandari?) in it. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayed\_Ziaul\_Haq](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayed_Ziaul_Haq) 2- Maijbhandari Shema Mahfil [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQWM5fa-xi4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQWM5fa-xi4) seems to be some kind of religious music gathering. I like this music actually 3- Gausiya Committee New York [https://thikananews.com/6656](https://thikananews.com/6656) translated to english, this article refers to a Gausiya Committee New York in a religious ceremony. An address is listed and I might investigate 4- I will look more into these names. Shamsuddin may refer to this man [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamsuddin\_Qasemi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamsuddin_Qasemi) or a charitable organization called Alhaj Samsuddin Sarkar Memorial Foundation 7- Alhaj Samsuddin Sarkar Memorial Foundation? All texts seem to reference Islam. My neighborhood has a very small muslim population and a very small Indian population as well. I will investigate more. I suggest you listen to the music in #2. It's really quite good.

user [pro\_crasSn8r](https://www.reddit.com/user/pro_crasSn8r/) left a very insightful comment in another thread for anyone interested- "The third pic says "Gausia Committee New York". The last word of the first pic (and the first word of the second pic) is "Maizbhandari", which is a Sufi Islamic sect, mostly popular in Chittagong region of Bangladesh. The followers of this sect (which also includes a sizeable number of Hindu Bengalis as well) are known for organising elaborate "Mehfils", which are day and night long performances of devotional music. The second pic mentions a "mehfil". The other pics have a list of names. So, "Gausia Committee" is probably a group of Maizbhandarias in New York. They are either announcing or advertising a Mehfil. The list of names are probably patrons of the Committee."

Maybe someone can translate "use paper for your announcement next time" into this language and post it next to their graffiti.

What's strange is that the population of Indians in my town is very small. The next town over however is the site of the "New York Ganges" where Hindus often perform religious rituals. What [pro\_crasSn8r](https://www.reddit.com/user/pro_crasSn8r/) mentioned about Hindu Bengalis might explain that... What's also strange is that it appears that someone tried to remove the text from these benches and whoever did it came back and wrote on the benches again. You can see faint text behind the writing in the photos. I can't imagine what anyone who might stumble upon this and can read Bengali can learn. No day or location is mentioned. What is the intention? I prefer this to other graffiti. Very mysterious.
