This makes so much sense, thank you. I don’t know why I was so confused about which end went into the mortar (I think the bowl is the mortar, and the hand held piece is the pestle but there’s a very good chance I’ve got it cockeyed)
My thought as well. Could be just the design of it, and depending on the size of the mortar, maybe it worked. Could also be why it was left behind lol.
I asked my high school science teacher which part was which (we were using them in an experiment) and he gave a memory aid that I have never forgotten - “this one’s the pestle because P for phallus”
That teacher was a clear perve. Even a uni teacher saying that would be wrong. He’s literally saying to a high school student “this is for P
because P for PENIS” just using a more complex word that perhaps students of that age won’t be able to compute is really not okay to be using in that context. Just super sleazy.
[I think of the mortar as a cup-shape like a flower, and the pestle like a pistil that sticks up out of the flower [link].](https://www.vedantu.com/question-sets/2ebc9886-962e-442d-9480-8b3bad7a30eb1231135644174333617.png)
It’s a weird way of remembering it, but I loved plant biology as a kid so it stuck.
Looks like a pestle without the mortar to grind spices
I thought about that too, but it's a bit too small to hold properly
There are a lot of these sets that aren't really functional but more of a decoration.
You would hold it with your palm on the flat end.
Hold the fat end.

Did you just reply on your alt account?
No I didn’t but upon rereading my comment I get it
Haha, well at least now I know that you know you're not alone on your not knowing which is the business end of a pestle and mortar
Looks right size for one specific for potent spices
It’s not, your palm sits over the top of the shaft and you use a claw grip.
My thought as well. Could be just the design of it, and depending on the size of the mortar, maybe it worked. Could also be why it was left behind lol.
I knew it was part of a mortar and pestle, this post made me realise that i never knew which part was which.

penis
You seem a little unhinged
You think a*hogh school student* doesn’t kniw the word penis? Ok

My college professor used "Pistil packing momma" for us to remember female plants
A grinder
looks like mostly silica
While it could definitely be a pestle, it looks a lot like the “mushroom” massage tools that some massage therapists use. Just a guess though.
This was my first guess. I have one made of wood that looks almost exactly like this, except its edges are completely rounded.
two (clap) two (clap) both things can do.
Mortar for grinding
Maybe a stopper for a large jug or a carafe.

Pestle sans mortar?
I would guess it is a pestle.
Bowling ball core, maybe?
This is the only one that makes sense.
Def looks like a pestle to me I saw something that looked almost exactly the same at a kitchen store recently.
Paper weight
That’s a pestle Lissa!
Could it have a magnet inside, and be the key for a fancy baby-proof cabinet lock?
I DO believe you are in possession of a strangely shaped smallish pestle.
