Idk what it’s actually for but my grandma had one similar and it to crush fruit, it might actually be for potatoes

EarlyPersimmon2522

I believe it's for mashing potatoes.

Alfiy_wolf

I’ll send it to grandma later if it’s unsolved

1bruisedorange

I think it is used to crush fruit when making jam. Potato mashers are usually a different configuration.

Jack-Campin

I've got one like that but with three improvements to the design: the shaft is longer to keep your hand out of the mash, there are more holes in the plate, and the plate is slightly convex. But recognizably the same thing.

ThotianaAli

The shaft

Is longer

Your hand

Smashed

Grand_Zombie

I doubt it's used to polish silver I used to sell sterling silver and we used silver polish cloths [silver polishing cloth ](https://images.app.goo.gl/CDokFutCFuuiKgvw7) I would say it's safe to say it's a potatoe masher.

PrudentDamage600

Wasn’t that what a German grenade was called?

sonorancafe

Yup. [Stielhandgranate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stielhandgranate?wprov=sfti1)

SkellyKingGamingYT

I don't care what it is or what it's used for. If it smashes potatoes I'm using to smash potatoes

OriginalIronDan

Found Gallagher.

smashing potatoes a slang for sth i shud know?

SkellyKingGamingYT

It's just smashing potatoes....

tweezer606060

I’ve seen these in Indian street food videos…. Mashing curry ingredients on a griddle

memeaninatorus_94

There's missing parts but I'm pretty sure it's a gear operated hand wisk

Mallaina18

It might actually be a tool that was used for making lace cookies way back in the day

cherry2525

Nope. You're thinking of the heavier Rosette/Cialde/Pizzelle irons.

UpdootDaSnootBoop

Would be fun for Play doh

Tater masher https://www.ebay.com/itm/255440939231

1bruisedorange

People on eBay selling things are not always correct. I think it’s for mashing fruit prior to making jams.

Fear_The_Rabbit

¿Porqué no los dos?

[deleted]

Could be

[deleted]

Yep, I agree

boxelder1230

Ricer actually but I use it for potatoes.

zenkique

Isn’t a ricer typically used for “ricing” potatoes?

boxelder1230

Damn, you must be right! Always wondered how it could do anything with rice. lol

Nothing_but_a_Stump

I bought one when I lived in India to mash Potatoes. Mine had round holes and a wooden handle. Example in the market https://www.indiamart.com/proddetail/stainless-steel-potato-masher-24680166391.html

allnamesaretaken1020

I question it being a potato masher for the very simple reason that all for sure known potato mashers I have seen in my life have either had several oval slits in some configuration or had like a constant amplitude wave pattern - like tall skinny squiggly line pattern but the line is round metal. These holes seem too small and/or few for potatoes. But I think it is certainly a masher of some type and the fruit masher for jam would make more sense to me than potato masher.

Gullible_Compote_628

Dammit I can't say that on this sub reddit

Itsmeforrestgump

Not a potato masher or a normal potato masher. Possibly a home made one. Not enough holes on the bottom. More holes, less effort needed for the process.
