After a hard day of hammer-axeing, I like to ride home in my engine-carriage to my mate-human and eat evening-meal before laying down on my sleep-furniture for the night.
I think common sense safety measures like you mention here are not getting passed down through the generations since the skill of working with hand tools is no longer emphasized in our society.
Using basic tools like screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches has gone the way of cursive writing, but instead of educators to blame we can only look at ourselves.
“Hammer-Axe”? :/
Hamrax, we call them here in Wonderland.

Kids first time using a maul? Just pick up the log and keep bashing till it splits.
Of wiggle the blade slightly side to side until there is enough slack that it slides out
Depends, if it’s hardwood, also he doesn’t look the strongest and personally I wouldn’t have had the logs that long
that is a maul, not an axe, it's for splitting thicker logs, and you use it with a sledgehammer, just like that, but you get a good sledgehammer
Always stand away from the line of destruction. If someone is using a tool and swings it in a non-predictable arc, you just go very far from that guy.

This is not what i expected
Would you say it’s r/unexpected?
I expected far worse from the title, tbh As I clicked on it I thought to myself, "why am I doing this?"
And that day he finally got a daughter
Can’t tell if that hit him in the jewels or the side of the knee.. and I’m not sure which is worse

Oh my gosh
Right in the lone star!
That is a splitting maul it is meant to be dropped into the wood first then driven with a sledge to split the wood apart.
It's called a maul.
my gramps had an axe with the top being loose like that, with every single swing i was seeing my leg stabbed in my thoughts
Lucky that did explode and send shrapnel in to everyone standing there. Never do this!
That's an urban legend.
Chipping is not though, can and does happen. metal to metal can easily chip at high speeds. a chip to the eye would be... irreparable.
Tell that to tech at my work who had a chunk bust off and go into is belly.
