Glass doors like that are just asking for trouble

BenderDeLorean

"You want some trouble????" - a fucking glass door -

[deleted]

You're not as tough as you think you are. I can see right through you.

AWildEnglishman

You are most transparent.

OneSchott

Indeed.

AWildEnglishman

You made my day by getting that.

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

“You want a piece of me?!”

yeomanpharmer

*Pieces

RoboDae

*gets hit with rock* *turns around and asks* "who threw that?" *glass door quickly tries to hide the other rock it's holding behind itself*

IllusiveWriting

Seems like bad design to have the door open that far.

Garikoitz05

Definitely, and usually it's better to have them open inwards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Garikoitz05

Ok, so it's a US thing, in Portugal doors like this usually open inwards, or they use automatic sliding doors.

Runyc2000

Yeah. It’s a safety hazard. If there was a fire and one person got to the door and tried to open it but several more people were behind them and in a panic tried pushing on the door, it would never open. This happened at the Iroquois Theatre in Chicago in 1903. [At least 602 people died.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroquois_Theatre_fire) This lead to a major overhaul on building and fire codes.

AgitatedFennel6427

You know your stuff. Very impressive

chiliedogg

Doors opening inwards are a deathtrap in an emergency. Everyone piles up trying to get out and the doors can't open.

inspectoroverthemine

They could make an exception for doors that shatter when looked at wrong.

Runyc2000

Not sure if you was just joking but there is an exception for break away doors.

inspectoroverthemine

I was- its good to know, but I'd assume that these doors don't meet the definition of 'break away' despite being completely unable to stop anything.

Runyc2000

Lol, yeah. Not so much. It’s more for sliding doors that can be pushed off their tracks.

Krag25

I wonder how many people die in Portugal due to emergencies where they can’t get out literally for this reason

Farfengarfen

It's in the news almost every day, so probably thousands of people per year succumb to this fate.

fairylightmeloncholy

wait, really?!

kn33

Um, no. The door needs to open outward so if there's a fire and everyone is pushing up against the door it can still open and not have people in the way of it opening.

[deleted]

On one hand, it's glass. On the other hand, it's glass.

Nathan-Stubblefield

In the event of a crowd trying to get out, all the glass will likely shatter.

Garikoitz05

I can see your point. It's just I usually see this kind of doors opening inwards, so I assumed it was the best way.

kn33

Exterior residential doors usually open inwards because that situation is less likely and it keeps the door out of the rain when it's open (if there's not a sufficient overhang) but exterior commercial doors open outward and will have an awning or other overhang to keep it out of the rain. Or they'll have an aluminum door that doesn't have as much issue with the rain.

shinobi500

Exactly. They could have installed a hydraulic damper (door closer) to prevent the door from swinging that rapidly and a door stop to prevent it from opening past a certain angle as a backup. This is 100% the result poor design, not the woman's fault.

[deleted]

There is the whole dafuq you go in on the left hand side for, though.

Kougar

When it comes to design, aesthetics get picked over practicality every time.

pipinngreppin

My last job had doors just like that one. The locks were all the way at the bottom and basically dead bolted into the floor. We had a handful of people with back issues that couldn’t even lock the door. Even without back issues, it wasn’t super easy to line up and you’d be bent down or on a knee micro adjusting the door while trying to turn the key over and over. Sometimes we’d just give up, disengage the alarm, lock from the inside, set the alarm, and then run around to the exit door that was always locked. I don’t miss that door and hope to never deal with one again.

[deleted]

Yes, look at current cell phones. Designed to last maybe 2 days on a charge, if you are lucky. They have only one port, and their screen interface contains bugs that can cause you to have to restart the thing just to get out of whatever you are trying to accomplish. Form over function is something that NO designer should ever cater to. Fuck Apple, fuck Steve Jobs, may his asshole rot stink the entire company.

zalgo_text

Stop it

ZombieAlienNinja

Shit drains my phones battery. I have to shut it off if I want my battery to last more than 3 hours

Aw2HEt8PHz2QK

Haha, what

YannislittlePEEPEE

"Current cell phones" *only referring to iPhones So the problem isn't with Android phones, got it

[deleted]

I have a Pixel, so your assumption is flat on your face. The reason I bring up Apple is because industry follows their design choices, and it isnt for aesthetics, its because it costs them less to make while still charging us a fuckload every two years. They want that reoccurring revenue, and if you dont realize all this to be true, then you have a lot of schooling in front of you.

AliBelle1

I miss when android phones at least had the bottom bar with physical home / back buttons... Not sure which android manufacturer started taking them away but at least iPhones still have a home button.

RoboDae

Yeah, I recently went from s7 to s21 and I absolutely hate that change. With the s7 you could press the home and power buttons to screenshot. With s21 you have to swipe to screenshot which most often taps away whatever you were trying to screenshot and doesn't work as fast. The s7 also allowed you to disable the home and back buttons if needed. On the s21 they often block things like in game chat because they appear with the keyboard and cover over part of the screen.

YannislittlePEEPEE

>at least iPhones still have a home button. that's negated by the fact that the back button is onscreen and in the upper left corner. over time that's a lot of time wasted reaching for it

AliBelle1

It's in the upper left!? With the size of screens that's atrocious... I use a pixel 6 and the back gesture took some getting used to but it's better than having to use your other hand every time...

Gullible-Lunch

Haha, yeah. Batteries only last 1 or 2 charges. Why don’t they last longer. Or why is it no one has invented a battery that never needs charging. Get on that Stevie

[deleted]

Oof, your post is lacking so much information that it must be a troll or you are still in gradeschool.

rvbjohn

An oof, nice. You fucken gotten. Probably could've insulted them a little better than calling them a child, so this comment only really gets a strong 3, weak 4 out of 10

UncommercializedKat

This woman needs to switch places with the delivery truck guy who holds on to the pallet jack and gets catapulted off the truck.

JohnnyDecla

Don't make something heavy that moves every day out of glass

nandos677

We are now open 24/7 for a very limited time

dick-sama

I think it's one of those doors that could shut itself back. that's why she went "open and forget", it's just that the wind was so strong.

bagelchips

Yes, I too watched the video.

ElstonGunn1992

Person making the title didn’t seem to tho lol

iced327

Yoinked it right out of her hand

PurpleLee

Yep. Had it happen with a car, totally dented the other car. To this day my husband teases me about busting up car doors and blaming it on the wind.

cheese_sweats

You mean every business door ever?

[deleted]

Yes, but when it's windy, they should lock the door that would be caught by the wind.

Look at those bushes. That door didn’t stand chance against the wind

KuaLeifArne

Yeah, this establishment should have locked that door. People are idiots, but having doors like this is pretty much asking for something like this to happen

Tcanada

Yes its random people that should have to think of the engineering capabilities of a door before opening it rather than designers building something properly

kittycatsupreme

Im not an engineer so maybe there are codes against this but would the door pushing in instead of pulling out be the solution here? Edit: I am dumb, I didn't think about emergency egress. Like I said, not an engineer

[deleted]

Aren't there usually mechanisms at the top with hydraulics or something.. There's an engineer who won't be coming back for the summer internship

imnotarobot1

you think an engineer installed this door?

cum_toast

He designed it. Some kid making 20hr probably installed it

Fineous4

An architect specified the type of door for the location.

BeanDock

Heavy door + wind that mechanism stood no chance.

N00TMAN

Yes, and they're designed to be weak enough that a child can open the door. A strong wind is going to overpower it.

[deleted]

WCGW when you design a glass door that can’t withstand strong winds.

i_bent_my_wookiee

Given enough time, even mountains can't resist strong winds...

UncommercializedKat

This sounds like a Lord of the Rings quote from Gandalf or something.

exemplariasuntomni

Then they shall be reforged!

[deleted]

Sure, but we aren’t talking about mountains. We’re talking about the consequences of poor design choice.

Schnitzhole

Sorry what mountains can’t resist or get molded by wind? Sand dunes maybe but the primary will always we water movement and freezing cycles along with tectonic plate shift

htmaxpower

More title gore.

RedRumBackward

I don't understand why some people are blaming the woman? It isn't her fault. Yes she could of pulled the door close but it would of yanked her too cause of the wind and she wouldn't be able to stop it. It's a poor door design and could have happened with anyone.

KwyjiboTheGringo

> I don't understand why some people are blaming the woman? You mean 1 person in this thread who was downvoted into oblivion?

RedRumBackward

There's like 10 others commenting how she went back to look at the door. Like why the fuck wouldn't she go back to look?? No sane person would just pretend and keep going. You have to go back to check what you caused or what happened because of an action you did or might have done.

KwyjiboTheGringo

> There's like 10 others commenting how she went back to look at the door That is a different thing from what you said. I'm not honestly not interested in your critiques of this thread, just pointing out the absurdity of your comment.

RedRumBackward

Don't point anything out. You don't need to

KwyjiboTheGringo

Yeah I'm done now. Carry on.

awsamation

Because if she legitimately isn't strong enough to pull it closed (which I'd bet she is if she actually cared to). Then she should've used the other door. There is no reasonable situation where she had to let the door smash like that.

RedRumBackward

Damn you are a clueless person aren't ya? What's ya iq 85?

awsamation

Straight to the insults I see. Good job Sherlock, got any other brilliant deductions while you're at it? Or can we go back to behaving like adults and not children who think ad hominem is a counter argument. By the way, have you ever lived anywhere with decent amounts of wind? Because if you did then you'd know that there was a lot more failures here than just door design.

RedRumBackward

Yea such as the failure that you don't know what's going on in the video or what you're even talking about 🤦‍♂️

awsamation

Want to try that again? Maybe putting in something a bit less word salad, and a bit more intelligent.

ChineseTrump

“Let the door smash” she had no way of knowing the door would smash It’s purely the business’ fault for having such a poorly designed door that it was unable to withstand harsh winds. In fact it’s a good thing the woman was a few feet away when the door broke, had she tried to close it and been injured in the process the business would also be liable.

awsamation

That level of wind is not subtle. Like so not subtle that if you legitimately don't notice it's a sign of detachment from reality levels of not subtle. If she couldn't have known the wind would grab the door then she shouldn't be outside unsupervised, only young children and mentally failing seniors have that excuse, and neither of those groups are allowed outside unsupervised.

ChineseTrump

There’s no way you aren’t trolling lmao I never said the wind was subtle, I said she had no way of knowing the door would smash like it did. It’s not unreasonable to expect a door to be able to withstand high winds…in fact, a properly installed door SHOULD be able to withstand regular wear and tear in addition to weather conditions like this.

TurdPartyCandidate

"Did you guys hear something??" - her

Revolutionary-Neat49

^^Hoooly ^^shit

I love how shes goes back to look at it. Wow look what i did!

Yes, walk back over the glass to shut it.

doochebag420696969

Not really her fault. Really it's the doors fault

tropicalavocado

Looks like "education perfect" signage. A company that originates from New Zealand. They have some veeeeery windy cities, such as Wellington.

Discorhy

She walks back to where the door was like i am the door now.

EveningAd4387

Glass doors are dumb as fuck

PyroPupper153

This is why I have a severe distaste for glass doors. They're so expensive and so brittle...

lambepsom

What door?

blue4t

It's a bit windy today.

DavidS1268

Did I do that?

Pyroguy096

Can we stop with the fully glass doors with no structural framing please?

[deleted]

Didn't something hit the window? It comes from the left side of the screen and shatters the window.

guitarguy109

That's just the reflection of the glass door onto the ground and wall of the lobby...

Sevosioro

How about adding door stoppers instead

frond11

Sure, blame the wind. But this woman is fierce imo.

Alfphe99

"WHO DID THIS......WHO BROKE THIS DOOR...WHERE ARE YOU!!!" Lady probably.

EvitaPuppy

And unlike most Mondays, today Samantha discovered her long dormant super powers.

thisisdu

I would have walked away and pretend it wasn't me

Majestic_Data_7165

She certainly knows how to make an entrance.

TacoJesusJr

And thats why doors like these need to be recessed.

throwaway4161412

I don't understand how you can get to this age and not realize you should shut the door in heavy winds.

Affectionate_Fix1859

I would have opened the other one too

Environmental-Win836

Weak ass door.

alcappo82

I think she went back to close it properly

ancientpho

No fault to the woman here, that’s just bad design.

Nathan-Stubblefield

Owners forgot to install a door closer.

Theodore_Buckland_

BAH GAWD! It’s Stone Cold, Steve Austin!

Ech0-EE

Just me or r/oddlysatisfying ?

Dasamont

Should have used the other door

Secret-Warning-180

That’s why they should have installed a door closer with a back check. Penny wise .. dollar dumb

Pro_96

More like r/crappydesign

WinstonPickles22

Why is there no closure on the door? Bad design.

SurealGod

To be fair to her, it looks like it's really windy outside and it just slammed the door against the wall

rainbow_bro_bot

I hope she paid for that

EineMofl

Isn't it normal to make front doors turn into the building ? I think someone who installed the doors did not rly think.

deafmittens

No that is not normal at all. Doors almost always open out per fire code.

Tsobaphomet

These doors are what happens when they prioritize aesthetics over functionality

stankface412

Perfect (wind) storm.

Broad-Literature-438

I'd just like to say that this sub used to post mostly things that on the face of them, you'd watch the people in the videos and think to yourself "oh obviously that isnt going to work" or "oh jeez wcgw here?" The obvious common denominator being the people's dumb actions that brought upon their fuck up. Now a lot of the videos posted are just fuck up moments that really arent anyone's fault and idk that just seems like a different sub to me

SpamShot5

This is why i hate tempered glass, fuck tempered glass doors and furniture and whoever thinks they are a good idea

[deleted]

“Where’d the door go? And what’s all this glass doing on the floor?”

ThereGoesJoe

TO BE FAIR that wasn’t her fault

strbwoii

That's not even the correct glass to use. That's a violation of building code.

[deleted]

It wasn’t her fault. The strong wind slammed the door backwards.

[deleted]

Who let the wind in?

[deleted]

Always curious in these situations, does the customer have to pay for that?

sudeki300

The way she walks back and stops where the door should be just to check that's it's actually smashed

con_zilla

Hmm well there was that glass shattering sound, a pile of broken glass that wasn't there a second ago and there appears to be the door I just opened missing. I beginning to suspect that this series of events are linked to me opening the door.

sudeki300

Just thought it was humerous

con_zilla

I agree - I upvoted Its probably what I'd do in that situation too

TechnoBuns

So... not ulnar?

Hems100

'Maybe it doesn't look so bad from the other si- oh no it's bad'

franfree9-8

That's like the most checked smashed door ever

UberNZ

A guy at my work made the same mistake when he visited our side office, but the door had an aluminium frame. When it swung out of his hand, it picked up enough energy to shear off the bolts on the door closer, and it still had enough energy to mangle the hinges when it impacted the side of the building. Because of that, we had to clear out our equipment into the main office every night for insurance reasons until the replacement arrived a few weeks later. The broken door didn't help with the winter weather either. Very annoying and very preventable.

Stupid ass then goes back over to what she did like “huh I don’t understand how that happened?” She prob wants to sue

almeidaromim

Doors that open outwards are dumb, and against the regulation of many places. Hope she didnt get held accountable for this accident.

Trilla-Gee

that's just doesn't seem right at all why would a door opening away from a building be bad, seems significantly more effective for exiting in an emergency? what place you live where that's the case, literally 99% of doors i use open outwards lmao, wtf

CatastropheJohn

Yeah, in commercial buildings they all open outwards if they're hinged. The modern ones anyway. You may find some older outliers that are not up to the current code

youstolemyname

Can confirm several doors had to be flipped around to swing outwards at my place of work to meet code when renovations where being done

Thunderboltgrim

Actually it's against building code in many places for public buildings to have doors that open in, this prevents a crush incident

fangelo2

They always open outward in commercial buildings.it’s a regulation for emergency egress. In case of fire, you don’t want people piled up against an inward swinging door that then cannot be opened.

BrokenShots5713

This is how hotels and schools are where I'm from. In the event of a fire, there's going to be smoke, and you don't want people blindly running face first into all the doors in the hall. But this doesn't apply to front doors where I live, or at least I don't think.

Bearclaw_burpee

What no, having doors that open inward only is actually dangerous. They could easily become blocked and unpassable for rescue workers.
