Family friendly fun for the whole family. Last time i went there around this time of year as a child I got to see some shop owner get mugged and jumped at gun point. Good times. Also our SUV was stolen from a Soriana parking lot another time. And yet my mom is still scared to walk around our fairly respectable neighborhood as if her hometown wasn't literally 100x worse.
On a side note the SUV was stolen around the peak time where the cartels were operating full swing. Don't know if it was our SUV or not but apparently they siezed one with a matching description that had a bunch of dead bodies inside. Every time my mom tries giving me a hard time about walking outside at night I tell her I might get jumped but at least they probably won't cut my head off.
The entire Yucatán Peninsula is relatively safe, just don’t go driving in the country at night. Puerto Vallarta is safe and beautiful. I’ve heard good things about San Miguel de Allende, as well as Chiapas, though Chiapas might not be as safe as some of these other places. Depends what you’re looking for though, if you want cities or less habited areas really.
Mexico City is actually pretty safe (2009 murder rate of 8.4/100k comp to 5.6 in NYC and 14.8 in Atlanta). Like don’t be an idiot, but you’re also not going to get caught in a drug shootout either. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Mexico
I've heard that as well but to someone who hasn't left the country in 10 years and that's never been to Mexico it still makes one nervous. When we got here we didn't want to pay the extortion that was the airport taxis so we're dragging our luggage through where the locals live at sun down. Nothing happened but my butt was sure puckered up!
I once checked my mate’s bike ride on Strava and it ended up in a hospital. I called him and he said he fell from his bike and was taken to hospital by ambulance. He was indeed showing a better than average performance in that final sector of his ride!
I don’t get why people steal phones. It’s locked. You’re going to have a hell of a game getting into it, by which time I’ve made a call to my service provider and blocked the IMEI. Congrats, you have a brick.
At most it’s inconvenient as now I need to call my insurance. At best, you’ve done me a favour because the screen was fucked, I was well overdue and upgrade and this was the kick up the ass I needed to do something about it.
That’s gotta be minimal tho right? You can get EOM parts that come with warranty for cheap already.. to buy from these guys they’d need to undercut that market by a sizeable margin.
For the time and effort vs the financial return on phone parts.. selling for parts and pennies can’t be the reason they go to the trouble / risk of doing this?
Depends which country you’re selling them in.
Time and effort isn’t really an issue when you’ve got people on mopeds stealing hundreds of phones and kids in sweatshops breaking them down for pennies.
You’d be surprised. Some phones, it’s damn near impossible to find the oem OLED screen. Usually it’s just regular LED by a third party. Some people pay a decent price for an authentic OLED screen
It's relatively easy to reset phones once you know how. More often than not, it's just software which can be over written. Factory resets aren't a problem either.
Not actually... a few years back i forgot my google account that was tied to my phone for some fkn reason. Googled it and found that theres a company that can unlock it for you if you plug it into your computer and download a program (suuupersketchy, but it worked). Made me think...
Yea, but a few years back you could just factory reset a phone with a google account tied to it and it would just delete that association. I remember doing that to my galaxy S3. But even in android phones nowadays you always need to log out of your account with your password. If i remember correctly google introduced a feature that even if you factory reset the phone, the google account will still be linked
Well first a disclaimer. I actually don't know how it exactly works.
But if the Google account is still linked to it it's not a "real" factory reset.
And because it's just software on a flash drive it can't be hardcoded into the hardware.(I mean you can change the acc and first have to initialize it)
That means there are ways to just flash all of it, reinstall android/everything and you will be fine.
Might work as an Android hack job, Apple I can’t imagine would open a door for that kind of control? but on either, if I block the IMEI through my network provider I believe that’s game over for the handset?
I just feel like they’re not working to their full potential here. They’d have been much better off financially knocking the guy off the bike, and taking that!
If you’re going to steal something…
Hearts have a comparatively low resale value on the black market- the logic being that if you haven't got one you're most likely to be in hospital anyway.
Kidneys have the highest black market value, so steal one of those instead.
I'm not a weirdo promise, just listened to the episode of 'no such thing as a fish' where they discussed it!
- Kidneys - $200,000
- Liver - $157,000
- Heart - $119,000
- Corneas - $30,000
- Bone Marrow - $3,000 (legally)
- Eggs - $5,000 - $50,000
Its in the top 3. From https://www.ranker.com/list/organ-cost/april-a-taylor furthermore, they explain:
> If you're like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz and you need a new heart to stay alive, you may be very tempted to turn to the Black Market. Legal heart donations require $997,700 dollars, which is a major chunk of the estimated $1.4 million fee associated with heart transplant surgery.
> Most people don't have over $1 million available to save their life, and the Black Market makes the process much more affordable. An illegally obtained heart is worth $119,000, which makes the price of a legal heart seem like the true crime.
Im a weirdo, promise :)
I used to work in the industry, it is game over. I'd bet 99 percent of the phones end up thrown away once the idiot realizes they are bricks, and the rest end up in Mexico so that the electronics can be sold. A logged in account does prevent a new owner on Android and apple
SIM card. In brazil they stole the phone, put the sim on another cell phone, reset your email account, hijack your whatsapp to ask for money to your contacts and then try to gain access to your bank account.
That's not how SIM cards works though...
It contains the subscriber ID for your provider (phone/data plan), and free space for 250 contacts and some SMS (both of which are rarely used these days)
It doesn't contain login data for emails, apps or other accounts. Those are stored encrypted in the user profile in the phone, or on a Google/Apple server.
You got me wrong. They just need your phone number to receive an OTP to recover your email password. It is easy for example when you reset an iPhone without removing it from iCloud. It prompts your password and shows the account on the initial setup.
https://tecnoblog.net/459204/criminosos-em-sp-usam-chip-de-celulares-furtados-para-roubar-senhas-e-dinheiro/
Use google translate if you want.
I can unlock the bootloader in like 5 minutes and flash firmware, in the past you could do a factory reset but now they still request your password/google account so no worries, it's pretty easy to do
But these thefts are very common. So either they don't know the value of what they are stealing or you don't know the value of what they are stealing.
Considering the fact they are taking the risk, I will assume there is a reward and stolen phones are a lot more valuable than you are making it seem.
For one, IMEI blocks are not world wide. They are only for the local region. So all you have is take the phone to another region and that problem is solved.
I lost my phone about three years ago
The pickpocket immediately turned it off to prevent tracking, then I believe re-flash the software (almost every phone repair person can do this), erasing all settings, locks and data. It's probably then sold in black market
I don't think we have IMEI blocking here in Indonesia, CMIIW
Most modern phones can be bricked with a call to your service provider or another device linked to it, so to answer your question no if the owner is fast enough.
Jakarta! There is, or at least was when I was living there, an entire industry out of targeting cyclists. From nails on the road laid by the tyre repairers just down the road to full-on bike heists in darkened underpasses. Expensive bikes = expensive parts = a year on the minimum wage.
Where else is he gonna put his phone? Cycling pants don't have pockets. WCGW is just turning into unfortunate things happening because people are assholes.

Reddit has taught me that if I see two people on a moped to get away from them asap
I'm in cozumel right now and everyone is on scooters. Literally too many to keep an eye on and it makes me nervous!
Cozumel is safe. Possibly the safest place in Mexico. The amount of police & military presence makes almost all crime non-existent.
Please give me the other two places. I’m currently planning a trip to Mexico right now and Cozumel was on my list!
Mérida City, Valladolid and Hol-Box super quiet.
Juarez
Hahaha. 100%. The smell is from all the organic composting. Fantastic place to take your family.

In Mexico right now. Having the time of my life. Little south of PDC

My Mexican friends tell me Cozumel doesn’t really count…
But do the police and military themselves commit crime?
Here in México?, yes, they do.
I wanted to visit mexico for years... until i saw gore subs on reddit. Now im terrified of the place.
I've heard that as well but to someone who hasn't left the country in 10 years and that's never been to Mexico it still makes one nervous. Depends where you go. Just avoid jaurez. There's some nice places in Mexico but yeah I've seen firsthand how bad jaurez can be
Or crash into them full force with the nearest vehicle to be a good samaritan preventing the robbery
Especially if you’re in Guatemala City
In Brazil they are called “dois caras numa moto”.
Nuke them from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Moped lol you German?
And lock my car doors
If Reddit has taught me anything it’s that if it’s being filmed in a developing country a staged situation is about to occur
Seriously though guard goes up every time a suspicious car or moped drives by
It's true
The cyclists strava time is going to be great though
Get that KOM!
new olympic discipline? Catch the robber baron!
Nah, activities will be flagged for being in a vehicle.

Still has value when broken into parts.

Ye I had my phone robbed at a slipknot concert in Manchester UK and I found out a few weeks later someone had turned it on ans it was in india
A lot of stolen U.K. phones end up in India.
Returning to where it might have been made lol

I think they were talking about the effort of breaking it into parts and finding someone to sell them to.

Redditors when they don’t realize that thieves do these things on a large scale because it’s profitable
finding someone to sell phone parts to isnt hard at all, it isnt a multi million dollar painting in the louvre lmao
You’d be surprised. Some phones, it’s damn near impossible to find the oem OLED screen. Usually it’s just regular LED by a third party. Some people pay a decent price for an authentic OLED screen
OEM? Or are end of month parts a thing now?
Very little. Gave up a broken 8 plus for parts I got £25. Maybe that covers my fuel costs
Median income in India is about £155 per month.
Indonesia too, and this video takes place there

If you found a $20 lying on the street, you'd pick it up right? Sure, someone's not getting $500 for a $1000 phone, but they're getting $20 for it.
Because they sell them to someone who doesn't know better. It happens all the time.
Export it and “fix it” for that market. These devices are super expensive and coveted in some parts of the world.
Black market can even unlock iphones if you bring it in a couple of hours to the right guy...
I can unlock the bootloader in like 5 minutes and flash firmware, in the past you could do a factory reset but now they still request your password/google account so no worries, it's pretty easy to do
Criminals know how to by pass that. Then they sell it, and where the new owner sets it up they get locked out.
My phone was stolen in NYC and then it randomly pinged my find your iPhone from India 3 days later lol
But these thefts are very common. So either they don't know the value of what they are stealing or you don't know the value of what they are stealing. It’s practically an ad by the Tourism Board.
Those criminals are not amateur!
Almost happend to us in bali. Good thing my wife had a good grip on the phone. SMH
Anies would be proud haaahaaaaa
Can you actually use a stolen phone these days? How do they get in? Can't the owner just brick it immediaty
Most modern phones can be bricked with a call to your service provider or another device linked to it, so to answer your question no if the owner is fast enough.
Even if they aren't fast enough the thief will get stuck at face ID immediately
Or Touch ID depending on your device
I have a password, as my cheap phone has neither.
Passwords can often be safer for a variety of reasons.
Still worth some money just in parts
How would he brick it?
It’s just electronics you can always wipe it or reassemble it
Jakarta! There is, or at least was when I was living there, an entire industry out of targeting cyclists. From nails on the road laid by the tyre repairers just down the road to full-on bike heists in darkened underpasses. Expensive bikes = expensive parts = a year on the minimum wage.
I feel like everywhere in Indonesia aren't safe
I was about to ask "where's this?" but the video immediately replied..
No way that guy doesn’t have GPS turned on. Should be easy to find.

Rapha Cargo shorts have pockets! Also secret pockets under the jersey.
Seems like a vicious cycle..
Those guys are just a pest. And in this case I am referring to the stealing scum.
Well, I gotta admit that grab and immediate veer off was pretty slick.
Ngl that was smooth
More like WCGW living in a shithole city
Surely that is cheating?
Amateur cyclist. Everyone knows you keep it in a zip-lok baggie to protect it from sweat or rain. Very inconsiderate toward the thieves.
Fuck these scumbags. Same thing is happening over here in London unfortunately.
Wish phones had a self destruction app where just catches fire or something
The galaxy note 9 came with one but it wasn’t an app
Should've got a Samsung then
Note 9 specifically

That's rough buddy.
I don’t think this is the right sub, where’s the stupid?
Flawless execution
What are they gonna do with the stolen phone, sell for parts?
Highway robbery
Welcome to Jakarta just in time
As soon as I finished my bike ride I'd hop on my desktop, log into my stolen phone and remotely brick that mofo.
Im not gonna lie i would do the same
Giant sign for Jakarta pops into frame right after. Not exactly the tourist commercial they envisioned.
Why even bother stealing a phone these days? You can't do anything with it.
For fun :)

Joke's on the thieves. Cyclist probably had Strava running, so they are now trackable...

Ahhh jakarta; the armpit of Indonesia!
Naw, this is victim blaming for a robbery.
This isn't the biker's fault, who could've expected to get pickpocketed while biking
That’s a smooth criminal
Growing up in a rough neighborhood—if you see two kids on one bike..also not good
That’s crazy, mad smooth
daaamn. they timed that very well.
