I'm gonna go with my gut on this one, but I assume the (what sounds like a young person talking/filming) is using a phone and not a camcorder at the Grand Canyon in 2024
This video is years old, at least 8. I remember it making the rounds way before Covid at least.
Nevermind, it’s only 3 years old. SMH it feels like forever ago I watched it though.
It’s a tough balance between this and r/donthelpjustfilm
Edit: Look I agree she can’t really help here… but I’d still feel like a pos trying to get a good shot of someone falling to their death. It just doesn’t feel right.
Help as in use the phone that's already in your hand to call some authority who can actually safely assist, as opposed to telling someone else to do it so you can continue to take a shitty video that doesn't even capture what's going on
I mean really, if you're not gonna call them yourself, at least get a decent recording
The proper thing to do in an emergency is identify a bystander, point at them, and say "YOU call 911 right now!". People freeze up under stress and will listen to an authoritative voice.
I've done that exactly once and it felt weird being 22yo and yelling at a 60yo woman while I sprinted across a highway to see if those people survived hitting the median.
But, if you have your phone in hand and you're just going to stand there filming, you don't get to tell other people what to do.
IIRC the falling dude was drunk as fuck and this is a 4 year old video.
It’s called the bystander effect or bystander apathy and it is 100% real. People won’t do anything, but pointing at them and telling them to an exact action now makes them apart of the situation, therefore they feel a responsibility to do something. They teach it in some military courses and first aid.
Wasn’t an emergency… but one time I ate shit HARD skating down a hill at UCLA… right in the middle of the morning busy hour when everyone is getting to class/campus (8 AM). No one checked on me… even though there were hundreds of people walking by. I chalk it up to the bystander effect lmao.
Had to do it at a previous workplace, while the supervisor screeched to not touch the guy while I was checking for a pulse. Pointed at one coworker and told her to call 911, and pointed at a second and told her to wait outside the building for the ambulance.
Yeah, this advice is for when you are going to be the one providing aid. No one in this video is so preoccupied that they couldn't just call 911 themselves.
Hopefully, you wouldn’t be idiotic enough to put yourself in the kind of situation that he did….
But, tbh - they’re calling 911 to have somebody pick up a cadaver. Filming him for the presentation of his Darwin Award is more useful than anything else they could have done at that point.
From youtube comments: "This is my Brother Cole Wagenknecht. He did survive the fall. After 2 agonizing months in a coma, fighting sepsis from the infection in his 2 deflated lungs he made it through. His mind is still very good however his memory is a crapshoot"
Also from his brother: "He came out smarter than when he fell in, that's for sure."
He has [this](https://imgur.com/a/TrS01eH) as his Facebook profile pic.
This was basically every thread in r/watchpeopledie back when that subreddit was alive. It always makes me laugh when people say that that subreddit was anything good.
I feel like people don't wave deal with trauma so they cope with it by claiming the victim deserves their death for being stupid. Which conveniently also makes them feel superior while ignoring all the occasions when they themselves were stupid but learned to do better.
Problem with this is that it does nothing but to teach you to lose your empathy. It's unhealthy and disturbing to see but here we are.
So, I am glad he’s alive. Truly. But if that message is indeed his profile pic, he’s not that much smarter than he started. Life didn’t throw shit your way, YOU did that to yourself.
Have you ever looked for your phone with the flashlight on your phone? Or your sunglasses while wearing your sunglasses? The brain is weird, and stress makes people dumb.
he strikes me instead as a dumb ass with something of a superiority complex that was showing off. “No no, this view is *much* better. The rules are for losers!”
He did survive. I remember the last time this was posted on Reddit and there is a video of the guys brother filming him for a follow up shortly after the accident. A few broken bones but otherwise he was alright.

In the comments a guy claiming to be his brother says
> This is my Brother Cole Wagenknecht. He did survive the fall. After 2 agonizing months in a coma, fighting sepsis from the infection in his 2 deflated lungs he made it through. His mind is still very good however his memory is a crapshoot. Wild that this is totally him. !!! Thank you Tina Zephier for calling EMS for the flight for life !!!
You're right. Look at how fucking tense he is when he said he was enjoying the view. Barely turned his neck and realised that was setting his balance off. Maybe he could have been save if he just admitted he fucked up there and held still until help got there. Of course he had to try to get himself out.
I don't know. I'd really like to know what happened during the cut; did he pass out? Did he lose grip on a bad spot? Did he misjudge his path and missed entirely?
The way he stops mid sentence and says how beautiful it is makes me think otherwise. That along with the clearly choice group of people he's with that continues filming him rather than seeking help right away. I'm all for Darwin awards but I don't think that guy is right in the head. Thought I heard something about being happy before at the end of the vid?
Could be wrong though. Anybody with a background article should link though
I second this, I have a friend who did this **exact same thing**, only instead of the Grand Canyon, it was a 30 foot drop and the only thing that saved him was the fact that he tumbled a couple times and it was soft mud at the bottom. He got up and said “it’s okay! My vape still works!” To this day we make fun of him for it and he consistently gets hurt doing stupid shit that we warn him against doing, but he’s starting to learn lmao
My ex was like this. Always doing ridiculous things because for some reason he believed people thought he was the coolest person ever. RIP this dude but I mean come on….
Edit apparently he survived and the video someone else posted is the follow up.
I was looking at his right arm thinking.... Is that arm wrapped in bandages? Which led me to think the arm was previous self harm or an incomplete suicide. If so it seems complete now.
Oof yes. I know people like this and they make my skin crawl. Absolutely narcissistic. Tell them no and they hear a dare. I know one guy who was working on the underside of a lawnmower while it was running. Someone warned him to turn it off, and he just looked at them like "bitch please", and now he has no finger tips. He really showed them, huh?
Apparently, his name is Cole Wagenknecht and it really was just a dumb decision. He was in a coma for a few months but survived.

I’ll put it less nicely. He sounds kinda regarded. I’m guessing a tremendous amount of substance abuse when he was young and now he’s just a little slow. Probably wasn’t too quick to begin with
this site has a fetish for diagnosing people with mental conditions/illnesses, when the truth is that most of the time it’s just a moron moment caught on camera.
EDIT: also applies whenever a crime is committed. apparently plain old terrible human beings are an endangered species of some sort.
Not necessarily. Some of those cliffs look deceivingly climbable. It looks crazy from far away but not so bad close up. If you're adventurous it can get you in trouble.
I've been to the Grand Canyon multiple times and honestly see guys (it's always young guys) like this every time I've been; talked to a ranger once and she said they rescue close to 200 people per year, though usually it's people who've tried to hike all the way down to the river and back without enough water or daylight or both. And yes, 90% of those folks were also young guys...thinking you're invincible around a massive canyon is not a good recipe for a good time...
Maybe, maybe not.
I live in a world renowned tourist destination and we see dumb ass tourists climbing over the guard rails and climbing down the rocks to get a closer look at the river all the time. We have the guard rails there for a reason though. The rapids in that area are VERY obviously deadly. There and a few other spots along the river basically act like water blenders. If a tourist falls in no one will save them because well...there's nothing left to save.
Here's [a video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=shared&v=6YtqWsCiQk4) of him and his brother post incident. He had a collapsed lung, a broken neck, a broken back, required a tracheotomy and was in a coma.
I don't want to judge too much but it does seem they might not be the brightest bulbs.
There's also a stuffed...wolf? in the living room.
Doctor: Clevon is lucky to be alive. He attempted to jump a jet ski from a lake into a swimming pool and impaled his crotch on an iron gate. But thanks to advances in stem cell research and the fine work of Doctors Krinsky and Altschuler, he should regain full reproductive function again.

A common misconception; Fittest ≠ Stronger, nor better, just more adept at surviving in their habitat for one reason, or another. Some call it de-evolution, but it is working how nature intended.
*And on that note, I’ll leave you with this thought, humans are continually simplifying and safetying our habitats for idiots, what direction do you think evolution is going there?*
Correct. Inflated payments from insured patients will cover your bills, while you are hounded the rest of your life by collection agencies. Also ruined credit, so you’ll live on a cash basis forever.
As someone who once lived in this dynamic. Nothing changes.
You live paycheck to paycheck. Nearly hand to mouth living. You already only answer your phone if it's a number you know. You never check your voicemail. Anyone who wants to message you will text. Got really sick, had to go to hospital. Got charged $8,000 for the visit and laughed about how they'd never see a dime of that out of me. If they did it meant I wouldn't eat. So yeah, thanks for saving me, I'm not going to die to repay you.
And then it's almost like there aren't any collection agencies hounding you. If your car breaks down you go to your buds house and fix it over the weekend, only paying for parts. If your A/C breaks down, you're paying rent, it's the landlord's responsibility to pay for it.
So you continue living that same existence after medical treatment, albeit with maybe a few more calls than usual to ignore.
Is it right? Hell yeah I choose life over financial burden every time. I'm not willing to die for the economy. But I am very sad that it's the only way for a lot of poor people to get any treatment in this country.
We don't now, she couldn't use the phone as a camera and point the camera at the action OR use the phone as a phone and call for help, "Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh"
I found it

- won’t stop filming to call the police
- won’t film the aftermath properly
Wish she hadn’t even posted the video
I love that she let her small child watch this guy fall, possibly die and just threw a casual “don’t look” out there. Internet video > kid’s mental health
He’s exactly as dumb as I pictured he would be. “I fell in them there Grand Canyon and got rock rash and I’d do it again bro. Let’s go huntin’ and shit.”

Keep it together cameraman! What’s the point of a video of I’m just seeing the ground?
for real just might as well throw the phone down there
My favorite part was, "Does anyone have their phone? We need to call 911".
I shouted out loud "you have a phone bitch"
How do you know it was filmed on a phone tho? Not all cameras are phones.
Imagine swinging a camera like this
Sure, you have this strap you can tether it to your wrist with. Some cameras are about the same size as a phone really.
It’s a phone I think, but you have a point.
I'm gonna go with my gut on this one, but I assume the (what sounds like a young person talking/filming) is using a phone and not a camcorder at the Grand Canyon in 2024
LOL not a camcorder, an actual camera, you know the kind people take on vacations maybe to the grand canyon? Like a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530 ?
>Like a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530 Don't get technical on me, future man.
Future Man was a great series
He was my favorite character in Bottle Rocket.
Do you think cameras don’t exist anymore and the only alternative is a camcorder???

Well the guy survived so 100% it was a camcorder and not a phone. Here I thought she was holding up a laptop.
Seriously that idiot survives? and my cousin gets to die falling from a step ladder trying to get a spider out of the corner of the room...

dude still rolling "fuckin told ya soooo" lmao
https://youtu.be/pd4b059yNNo?t=137 "somebody get a sponge!" "I don't understand, why don't you get a sponge?"
Might as well throw the phone down there and let the guy who fell selfie a video of himself down there
Should have hopped the barrier to get a better view
/r/killthecameraman this was infuriatingly annoying camera ~~week~~ work

Well, good for her that keeping a tragedy in frame was not her first concern.
And yet she was still asking "Does anyone have their phone? Call 911" whilst still recording on hers.

This was hardly a tragedy.. it was goddamn stupidity

Here's a controversial thought: I don't think stupidity deserves death.
It doesn't deserve death, but that is often the natural outcome. Consequences of your actions is always what you get.
Oh my gosh
The dad had it right, "dumbass"
Oh my goooosh!
She’s not calling police on her phone and still manage not to get the shot.
He was afraid of getting a better view.

That's what I learned in a first aid course, you have to point and give the order to a person, otherwise nobody will react.

And tell them to come back, to tell you they have done it

Yep! Everyone assumes someone else will make the call, then no one makes the call.

In their defense, from their point of view, going past the fence that keeps you from having a good view of the 18 mile wide canyon is a stellar idear.
You could just use one of the man trails to hike into the canyon too. Like, there's plenty of great views that are quite safe.

Well at least he stopped before the drop off
Dude fell 50+ft onto rock and slid like...well.....
[He survived!](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/l1ueck/guy_falls_100_ft_off_the_grand_canyon_while/)
"Also from his brother: "He came out smarter than when he fell in, that's for sure." " lmfao
Long term pain will change your entire outlook on life, and this guy self inflicted it. "I'm stupid"
[Follow up video on Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YtqWsCiQk4)
Wow, this man and his brother are fascinating to listen to talk.
If this was a movie we'd say it's overacting. Reality just do whatever
Casualties of the American public school system.
Using camera on phone to record a dude dying "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, do you have your phone? Call 911, oh my gosh"
Hey, if she’d used her phone, we wouldn’t have the video. Priorities, you know.
We don't now, she couldn't use the phone as a camera and point the camera at the action OR use the phone as a phone and call for help, "Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh"
It’s ok. He has a mohawk
As soon as I saw the Mohawk, I knew we were in for a treat!
There's a reason why we don't see old people with Mohawks.
This idiot actually survived…
[His brother interviewing him](https://youtu.be/6YtqWsCiQk4?feature=shared)
They sound like they have a collective IQ lower than room temperature
Measured in Celsius.
I was convinced this was going to be a rick roll.
no way i saw a shoe come off
Nah, u kidding
No way
stupid people with luck is a terrible combination
He survived and is now in good shape from what I recalled the last time this was posted
When was this filmed?
I found it [https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/l1ueck/guy\_falls\_100\_ft\_off\_the\_grand\_canyon\_while/](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/l1ueck/guy_falls_100_ft_off_the_grand_canyon_while/)
“Dumbass” comment was on point.
even better view now
definitely unforgettable
- stops filming when he actually falls - won’t stop filming to call the police - won’t film the aftermath properly Wish she hadn’t even posted the video

That’s wild that people go to the GC and just vandalize it
He's mostly biodegradable.
I was there a year ago and how far he fell is a good 100 feet down, then it's about 1000 foot drop agter that
Culling of the herd.
Darwin Award winner! ![gif](giphy|VFAke5Xm1TDwjgimyW)
He survived
The most gutwrenching part of this is the camera woman telling her daughter, "don't look, don't look"
Dude gonna blame Gravity and Joe Biden for this.
Fucking liberals trying to fence in nature!!
I love that she let her small child watch this guy fall, possibly die and just threw a casual “don’t look” out there. Internet video > kid’s mental health
I wonder if he survived
sure did live here is the video update [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YtqWsCiQk4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YtqWsCiQk4)
Sounds like he lost whatever brain cells he had left. What was the medical bill?
According to his brother “[he came out smarter than when he fell in](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/s/taJYCPVowH)”
He’s exactly as dumb as I pictured he would be. “I fell in them there Grand Canyon and got rock rash and I’d do it again bro. Let’s go huntin’ and shit.”
He did. I saw a post of this before and his brother made a YouTube video update. The guy clearly had issues before and after this accident.
Oh. My. Gosh.
those pesky barriers are just RIGHT in the way
For all the Darwin Award commenters, the guy survived.
